LG ELECTRONICS, NCOMPUTING JOIN FORCES TO CREATE INDUSTRY’S LOWEST COST WORKSTATIONS FOR DESKTOP VIRTUALIZATION AND CLOUD COMPUTING
LG to embed NComputing technology into new SmartVine N-series
SEOUL, South Korea, and REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 18, 2009 – Global electronics innovator LG Electronics and NComputing, the world leader in virtual desktops, today announced a strategic partnership to produce a new category of LCD monitors that integrates NComputing’s virtual desktop technology.
LG Electronics, which shipped more than 15 million monitors last year, will bring its high-volume scale and global distribution network to the alliance, while NComputing will contribute its award-winning hardware and vSpace™ virtualization software. The sub-$200 computing solution will further drive the acceleration towards desktop virtualization and “cloud computing” in which computing is centralized and done over the Web.
“The NComputing-LG partnership will significantly cut the high cost of computing for businesses, schools and government,” said Stephen Dukker, chairman and CEO of NComputing. “We are delighted to work with one of the largest and most respected electronics companies in the world to bring our computing solutions to everyone.”
Customers are increasingly turning to desktop virtualization, Software as a Service (SaaS), and Web-hosted applications to lower their IT costs. NComputing estimates that customers for LG SmartVine N-series monitors with embedded NComputing desktop virtualization technology can lower their computer hardware costs by 60 percent, maintenance costs by 70 percent, and electricity costs by 90 percent. The LG monitors work with both Windows and Linux computers.
“Our customers are taking into account not just the purchase price of computing, but also long-term costs connected to IT support, maintenance and electricity,” said Ron Snaidauf, vice president of commercial products, LG Electronics USA Business Solutions. “Combining NComputing technology with our market-leading monitors creates the optimal solution for today’s cost-conscious businesses.”
In the United States, the LG SmartVine N-series line will include 17 and 19-inch* class monitors (models N1742L-BF and N1941W-PF) covering both standard and widescreen resolutions. A 16-inch* class model will also be available in other countries. All LG SmartVine N-series monitors can also be used as traditional monitors that connect through VGA for ultimate flexibility. These monitors will be marketed worldwide by LG beginning this month.
NComputing is the fastest growing provider of virtual desktops in the world and its technology is based on a simple fact: today’s computers are so powerful that the vast majority of applications use only a small fraction of the computer’s capacity. NComputing technology enables a single PC or server to be virtualized so that many users can tap the unused capacity and share it as if each person had their own computer.
LG Electronics is embedding NComputing virtualization circuitry inside the new SmartVine N-series monitors. Users connect their keyboards and mice directly to the monitor, which then connects to the host PC via a standard cable. An NComputing X550 PCI Card Kit with vSpace software enables the host PC to connect to 5 additional monitors. With two kits, a total of 11 users can share one PC.
“Demand for low cost high value computing is expanding quickly, especially in light of recessionary pressures on IT budgets. The LG-NComputing partnership will help accelerate virtual desktop computing as a low cost high value offering because it dramatically improves the economics and simplicity of end-user computing,” said leading computer technologist Rob Enderle, Principal, Enderle Group. “In the coming years, as cloud computing becomes more mainstream, workers may simply link network enabled devices like this into the cloud without the need, or desire, for any local computing resources.”
Since introducing the award-winning virtual desktop technology two years ago, NComputing has emerged as the market leader with over 40,000 customers and millions of people using their virtual desktops and vSpace software in over 140 countries. NComputing won the Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation award, the Gartner Cool Vendor Award, the Frost and Sullivan Green Computing award, as well as numerous awards from CES, Deloitte, CeBit, and ExpoComm. Intel ‘Rockstars’ Show off Future Research Concepts, Projects
CTO: Newly Named Intel Labs will Focus on Impacting Company Growth Vectors
RESEARCH@INTEL DAY, Mountain View, Calif., June 18, 2009 – A sneak peek of tomorrow was provided by Intel Corporation today at the company’s annual Research@Intel Day. Nearly 40 futuristic projects and concepts were showcased in such areas as eco-technology, 3-D Internet, enterprise IT and wireless mobility. Intel also has a made public a beta Web site where users can play “point, counterpoint” by submitting a statement found online and learning whether he or she has been duped.
Two researchers on hand included Ajay Bhatt, the co-inventor of USB, the standard to connect devices to computers, and Joshua Smith, a pioneer in wireless power and robotics. Both are currently featured in a new commercial called “Rock Star,” which his part of the company’s current Sponsors of Tomorrow marketing campaign.
A future mobile internet device enabled with platform power management, a research effort which will help to enable up to a 50x reduction in platform idle power of future Intel MIDs and smartphones.
“I hope attendees get a chance to speak with and meet our very own rock stars from Intel Labs today,” said Justin Rattner, Intel’s chief technology officer. “What the researchers are developing today in the labs will ultimately make future computing and communications faster, easier and more energy efficient, and have a significant impact on people’s work and home life in the coming years.”
Rattner, also an Intel Senior Fellow and vice president and director of Intel Labs, discussed recent changes to Intel’s research agendas and priorities. The goal is to improve the likelihood of impact and tightly align with the company’s overall growth vectors such as mobility, visual computing and system-on-chip design, where many more computing and communications functions are placed on a single piece of silicon. The new organization, called Intel Labs, will identify game-changing opportunities for tech innovation and deliver breakthrough discoveries in those areas.
Several of these research innovations were on display at the event. Demonstrations covered power efficiency for mobile devices, immersive connected experiences, mobility and enterprise IT.
Future Atom-based MIDs and Smartphones to Implement New Technique from Labs
Platform power management (PPM), a research effort first discussed in this same forum last year, is one of the innovative power management technologies behind “Moorestown,” the codename of a future member of the Atom family that targets mobile Internet devices (MIDs). Rattner was joined onstage by Ticky Thakkar, Intel Fellow and director of platform architecture for the Ultra Mobile Group, to disclose that this research has helped enable up to a 50x reduction in platform idle power over today’s Atom-based platform, which translates to much longer battery life.
The power reduction technique is a fundamentally new approach that introduces changes to silicon for enabling hardware to play a major role in reducing power consumption. In this new approach, hardware implements power policies set by the operating system to manage power in much less time and at much finer granularity. The computer will be able to quickly, aggressively and intelligently reduce power or even power down portions of the system not in use – as with wireless radios or I/O subsystems -- and immediately power back on when needed with zero impact to the user experience. Platform power management could someday benefit the full range of Intel products, from MIDs to high-performance servers.
Dispute Finder: Are You Being Duped?
"The Web" is nearly synonymous with "information." While much of this information is useful, a significant amount could be characterized as false, misleading or biased. Dispute finder is an early research effort from Intel Labs that enables Internet surfers to navigate through a minefield of contradicting information much easier.
While a user is reading an online news article, blog or Web site, text snippets are automatically highlighted if information found elsewhere contradicts a given claim made. Clicking on the highlighted snippet, like “a glass of wine a day is good for you,” reveals an argument graph showing sources on either side of the issue. Every single claim and evidence has been user generated, similar to how Wikipedia works, and are maintained in a central venue online where anyone can contribute.
Future of the Internet: Much Less Text
As future Intel chips scale from a few cores to many, researchers at Intel Labs believe the transition to mainstream parallel computing will lead to a future Internet that is rich in 3-D graphics and relies a lot less on text, making possible a more immersive Internet experience with ultra-realistic 3-D visualizations and natural human-computer interfaces. Picture a travel Web site that allows you to check out your vacation destination, like New York City, before you actually get there. So in addition to a virtual walk around the hotel room, users could also check out Times Square, restaurants, nearby theaters and even walk the route to estimate how far they are from the hotel.
Intel has begun prototyping the 3-D Internet in the scientific world first, using a tool called ScienceSim. This is a common place on the net where scientists can create visual simulations online and collaborate more effectively using these capabilities. The idea is to advance research through visualization, like a model of coastal margins and tides in order to study the impacts of human activity.
Creating a More Flexible Internet, Running on a General Purpose Computer
The Internet’s original designers never anticipated its astounding growth and success. Consequently, the Internet relies on highly specialized network equipment often with hard coded support for a pre-defined set of packet routing capabilities. This presents challenges given the rapidly evolving demands of new applications. Intel researchers propose Router Bricks as a simple, but radical solution, allowing networks to be built from general-purpose computers rather than specialized equipment. The prototype demonstrated builds a high-speed router from clusters of Intel® XeonTM -based servers running open-source software. Rather than wait years for specialized routing hardware to evolve, network programmers in the future could cheaply and rapidly program new router functions using the familiar general purpose computer as their platform.
Mobile Misfits Among Us: Intel Survey Reveals 9 out of 10 U.S. Adults Annoyed by Some Mobile Behaviors
Driving While Texting, Loud Talkers Top Complaints; Yet, Most Don't Think They are Culprits Themselves
SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 17 2009 – 90 percent of U.S. adults are frustrated by others' etiquette or lack thereof when using mobile devices, including laptops, netbooks and smart phones in certain places according to the recent "Mobile Etiquette" survey conducted by Harris Interactive* and sponsored by Intel Corporation.
Nine of 10 adults had a pet peeve with 72 percent of adults reporting that their top annoyance is when others text or type on their mobile devices while driving a car. As for other pet peeves, 63 percent of adults cited talking loudly on an Internet-enabled device in public as irritating, as well as discussing private matters in public (55 percent) and texting or typing on such devices while in the presence of others (54 percent).
The survey also found that while the majority of adults have pet peeves, only one-third (38 percent) admit to being mobile etiquette offenders themselves when it comes to texting in the company of others.
Key Survey FindingsAccording to the survey, more than 80 percent of adults have witnessed someone doing something strange while on a call or accessing the Internet via a mobile device. This is not surprising, as many adults are computing on the go with smaller, lightweight netbooks, laptops and mobile phones. Top responses for strange mobile etiquette behavior ranged from making a cashier wait until a phone call is completed and texting while driving. Other responses included using a laptop in a public bathroom and hearing typing and conversations at a church, funeral and doctor's office.
Eighty-two percent of adults have been annoyed by others inappropriately using Internet enabled-devices in public places. More than half of adults (56 percent) report being annoyed by people who do not follow mobile etiquette rules in cafes and restaurants, and close to half (47 percent) felt the same way about movie theaters and concert venues. About four out of 10 (41 percent) adults mentioned retail and grocery stores as top spots where they are annoyed by mobile etiquette offenders, while about a quarter of adults (26 percent) listed public restrooms.
Still, only 38 percent of adults admitted at least sometimes texting or typing while in the company of others on their own devices. While 55 percent said it bothered them when others discussed private matters in public on their mobile phones and devices, only 28 percent of adults admitted they at least sometimes engaged in the same behavior.
Smaller, Lighter Mobile Devices Give Way to New Mobile Etiquette
"We have more and more technology in our lives – much of it in our handbags, backpacks, and pockets as well as our homes, offices and even cars. It is hardly surprising that we are still working out what is socially appropriate and what isn't – we are still developing our techno-etiquettes," said Genevieve Bell, an Intel Fellow and cultural anthropologist who studies technology and culture.
Even as new techno-etiquettes are getting sorted out, Bell says, we can look to common sense, government regulations and the kinds of things our parents and teachers told us for guidance:
· Experts agree typing and texting while driving is distracting and dangerous, not to mention really bad ergonomically. Do yourself and your fellow drivers a favor, keep the laptops closed and devices put away, or pull over before you type your next message or email – in some place around the world, failure to do this will earn you a ticket or worse.
· It turns out mobile devices don't have secret cloaking properties or their own little cones of silence. So until they do, if it's a conversation you wouldn't want overheard, take your mobile device to a secluded area and keep the details between you and the person on the other end of the line.
· Bell recently had dinner with a man who confessed that he was the only man in the restroom not using a Blackberry* – he couldn't decide whether to feel appalled or left out. Sure sometimes, you just have to make that call, but there are some places that we can all mostly agree should be considered off-limits. These locations include public restrooms, locker rooms, places of worship and restaurants while in the company of others, and especially while on a date -- unless you need to be rescued, but that's a different social etiquette.
· My mom taught me that sharing was good; yours probably taught you the same thing. Turns out she wasn't always right. When watching videos on your computer in public, be sure to use your headphones -- not everyone wants to share with you. Additionally, it's rude to peer over someone else's shoulder, so be sure not to let your eyes wander onto another person's mobile device – unless of course you are dying to know what the new app is or the brand of that hopelessly sexy mobile phone.
· And while we are on the subject of sharing, the electric outlets at the local coffee shop or airport with Wi-Fi service are meant for the masses. If others are waiting, unplug and share the electric wealth, or do as one of my dear friends does and carry a power strip – you will make friends immediately.
· Some people can't walk and chew gum at the same time. I am one of them. Many more can't text or type while walking. I am one of them, too. So I have learnt through bitter experience, stubbed toes and faint embarrassment to take a second, come to a stop and finish typing that message. Otherwise you risk walking into people, bumping into fire hydrants or creating a big, mobile etiquette mess.
This survey was conducted online between April 8-10, 2009 within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of Intel. Participants included 2,160 adults, ages 18 and older. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. For complete survey methodology, including weighting variables, please contact the media contact above.
Intel announces winners of “Inside Matters” contest
Intel Malaysia recently organized a blogging competition themed “Inside Matters”. Opened to selected bloggers that Intel have engaged previously and branded as Intel Insiders, these bloggers were invited to submit their creative or technical interpretation of why or how ‘inside matters”. The contest theme was chosen to highlight the importance of what is inside – be it inside a person, food or any other element that matters.
“We wanted to use the theme to bring up the fact that the processor inside a computer matters and plays a significant role in the computing power of a PC. While the exterior of a computer may be big or small, heavy or light, it is ultimately the processor inside each computer that determines the power of the machine. Once consumers have decided to buy a PC, we recommend that it is Intel inside,” said Norhizam Kadir, marketing manager of Intel Malaysia.
The resulting blog posts from Intel Insiders demonstrated their creativity and imagination, and Intel was visibly impressed with the variety of entries they received.
“It was tough selecting one single winner, so we decided to give runners-up prizes to two other deserving Intel Insiders,” added Norhizam.
The winner for the contest, Chan Wern Shen, walked away with a netbook powered by Intel® Atom™ processor. “It doesn’t always matter how flashy your computer looks, nor does it matter how much it costs. It’s the things that are inside that matters - both in your machine, and in your expectations,” Chan blogs.
The runners-up who received an iPod shuffle each were:
(i) Song Huei Juin, who blogged about her significant other’s gentle and shy character despite his exterior serious look. “While he looks tough on the exterior, he’s actually one soft person. So before you decide to judge a book by its cover next time, flip a page; you’ll be surprised by how great the inside is.”
(ii) Sean Soon who recounted his nasi lemak experience. “Yes, indeed inside matters. Who knew that a small packet of nasi lemak could taste so good? Though the packet was oily, sluggish and looked as though it had very little content, unexpectedly you tasted heaven in that one small packet. It’s not what is on the outside, but what is inside that matters most!”

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, June 18 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- TANDBERG, today, unveiled the first-of-its-kind full high definition video conferencing solution designed specifically for companies just getting started with video communications or those looking to scale a large deployment . The TANDBERG Quick Set C20 is set to open up new market opportunities for TANDBERG by promising to deliver unrivalled high-quality, affordable, easy-to-use visual communications.
TANDBERG's President for Asia Pacific (excluding China and Japan), Lars Ronning said, "When you consider that the cost of a single C20 system is less than the cost of an international business trip, this solution makes absolute fiscal sense. The TANDBERG Quick Set C20 is the first offering of its kind -- providing absolute quality video at a price point within the reach of smaller businesses. Video enables a lean staff to increase customer face time and reduce travel expenses; recruit top talent no matter where they are located; and build a culture around collaboration."
Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) in particular will stand to benefit from the C20s features. Comprising 90% of the world's workforce, SMBs are focused now more than ever on innovative ways to leverage opportunities and reduce operating costs. By eliminating the need for travel -- whether a six hour flight to meet with a customer, or one hour spent in traffic traveling to a local office -- the Quick Set C20 helps reduce costs and improve productivity, while bringing together employees, customers, remote experts and suppliers to make faster, smarter decisions -- all with an immediate return on investment. According to a report by Access Markets International Partners (AMI-Partners), IT expenditure by SMBs in the Asia Pacific region will reach US$153 billion in 2009.
"TANDBERG customer RTX, a wireless products developer based in Hong Kong firm with a staff of 48, has seen cost savings and increased productivity with video conferencing. "Video conferencing means we can truly work across boundaries to collaborate on projects. It's a huge boon for productivity and I wish we'd done it sooner," said Peter, Christensen, Vice President, RTX.
"SMBs are increasingly becoming remote, heightening their need for effective conferencing solutions to carry on normal business operations. Video conferencing, while very effective, has traditionally required expensive equipment and resources, making it uneconomical for this group," said Roopam Jain, Principal Analyst -- Conferencing & Collaboration, Frost & Sullivan. "The TANDBERG Quick Set C20 is unique in that it provides a plug-and-play high-definition video conferencing solution at an attractive price point that is easy to install; a requirement for many companies who may have limited IT resources. Moreover, the high-quality visual and audio experience, coupled with the ability to get enhanced features through a simple software upgrade instead of requiring new expensive hardware makes the Quick Set C20 a great value for SMBs."
The TANDBERG Quick Set C20 is a complete visual communication package that includes a TANDBERG Codec C20, a high-resolution 1080p30 camera with 4x zoom, a remote control and a microphone. The system can be plugged into any high definition display for immediate video conferencing capabilities. In just five simple steps users connect the 1) camera, 2) display, 3) power, 4) network and 5) microphone and are ready to connect face-to-face with colleagues, customers, and suppliers anywhere in the world.

Both Quick Set C20 packages have the ability to support dual screens for enhanced multi-media sharing and are supported by the TANDBERG Management Suite. Additionally, SMBs can rest assured that if they ever require multipoint conferences the award-winning line of high-definition TANDBERG MCUs will work with the Quick Set C20 to easily enable larger conferences in full 1080p30 high definition with a software upgrade scheduled for availability in early Q3.

IDC Forecasts the Software-as-a-Service Market To Grow 6 Times Stronger than the Overall Packaged Software Market Growth in Asia/Pacific
Singapore and Hong Kong, June 17, 2009 – IDC expects the SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) market to take off significantly in 2009, despite a challenging year for IT market in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) region. According to IDC's latest report "Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) Software-as-a-Service Market Size and Forecast, 2009-2013: The Growth Has Yet to Peak" (Doc #AP321205S), the regional SaaS market is expected to reach US$298 million in 2009, which is an increase of 18% from 2008. This growth rate is 6 times higher than the overall packaged software market growth of 3% in 2009.
"Companies in the region are more keen with the SaaS subscription model as they cope with the increasing IT budget constraints,” said Sheila Lam, Senior Market Analyst of IDC’s Asia/Pacific Enterprise Applications Research. "Enterprises are considering to shift the hardware and software maintenance expenses towards SaaS, which appears to be a cost-efficient alternative by merging the license, hosting and management fees into a single subscription fee."
With a low upfront investment cost, SaaS is also a good testing ground for enterprises to try out new applications before making heavy investment and enterprise-wide implementation. In the emerging markets, companies are also likely to embrace SaaS with open arms, because they have less prior IT investment and legacy issues.
In terms of market size, Australia is expected to contribute 45% to the overall SaaS market, followed by the PRC, where the country contributed 29% to the market. The active local vendors in China are driving awareness and adoption of SaaS, accelerating growth over the next 5 years in the market at a CAGR of 25%. India will be another fast-growing market that is expected to grow at a CAGR of 42% within the next 5 years.
The report also shares insights into the different applications that are more likely to be delivered via SaaS. As a result of aggressive marketing initiatives over the past few years, CRM applications are expected to lead in the APeJ SaaS market in 2009, capturing 31% of the overall SaaS market in the region. IDC also notes that more companies are finding the subscription of human capital management and financial applications via SaaS is a very feasible and attractive proposition. Pervasively available software such as collaborative and security software is also expected to increase in significance as far as SaaS delivery model is concerned.
Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) SaaS Market 2009 (by Applications)
Findings from this report are supported by the research efforts of IDC’s analysts from across the region, as well as an end-user survey conducted by IDC earlier this year. The survey, which covers five major markets: Australia, the PRC, India, Korea and Singapore, studies the attitude and adoption trend of SaaS among enterprises. To better understand the future developments for these markets, please refer to the upcoming report, “Asia/Pacific Software-as-a-Service End User Survey 2009: Growth from Mindshare to Market Share”.
In addition, a report that analyzes and deep dives into the SaaS CRM market development and end-user attitude will also be released in July.

HP ProCurve Cuts Enterprise Networking Costs with New 3500 Series Switches
KUALA LUMPUR, June 17, 2009 – HP ProCurve today announced four new 3500 Series 10/100 switches that help enterprises cut networking expenses. The new switches are an extension of the popular HP ProCurve 3500yl series and provide a choice of flexible options to run business applications efficiently. Built on the ProVision ASIC platform, these switches offer a powerful combination of leading-edge switching technology, high performance, rich features, and cost-effectiveness.
With the introduction of the HP ProCurve 3500 10/100 enterprise edge switches, HP ProCurve Networking expands its Adaptive Edge Architecture portfolio, providing customers with yet another means to adapt easily to the needs of users, applications and business needs. The new switches offer tailored features with the right price points, helping customers to "right-size" the network. The foundation of this new series of switches is a purpose-built, programmable ProVision ASIC that allows the most demanding networking features, such as Quality of Service (QoS) and security, to be implemented in a scalable yet granular fashion.
The 3500 10/100 switches are designed and priced to suit enterprise edge deployments that do not require Gigabit throughput, such as for IP telephony, physical security solutions and wireless solutions. This series of switches offer a choice of either 802.3af-compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE) or non-PoE switches.
Customers can keep users productive with the 3500 PoE switches in environments where it would be expensive, inconvenient, or even infeasible to run a power cord, or they can opt for the less expensive non-PoE alternatives in environments where power supplies are readily available. In addition, the 3500 10/100 switches can be upgraded to enable support for full Layer 3 functionality, using the optional HP ProCurve Premium Edge license.
The HP ProCurve 3500 offer customers 10/100 Ethernet connections, complementing the existing HP ProCurve 3500yl switch series which provide gigabit throughput. Especially in the current economic climate where enterprises are looking to lower networking costs, the 3500 10/100 switches offer the best value for customers with their combination of rich features and affordability.
The four new models give customers choice and flexibility to choose 24- or 48-port options, as well as Power over Ethernet (PoE) or non-PoE versions. The new switches provide investment protection with the ProCurve Lifetime Warranty.1

Improve customer loyalty by empowering consumers and enterprises to set their own policies including mobile usage at home, in the office, and while roaming, personal limits and notifications, prioritizing applications, or assigning different usage thresholds by employee function.
Increase Apps Store brand awareness with a convenient mobile application that offers easy access to personalized usage controls and service options that leverage subscriber assets such as preferences, location, billing, and behaviors. Operators can customize the myPolicy application with functions available on self-service web portals such as modifying plans and access to account features.
Drive incremental revenues with personalized services such as roaming or application day passes, bandwidth boosts, and special event offers based on usage or location. Custom myPolicy solutions can be provided to enterprise IT departments to manage mobile usage.
Reduce customer service costs by giving subscribers the freedom to set their own policies and monitor usage in real time on their mobile devices.
Peter Mottishaw, Principal Analyst, Analysys Mason"There has been a rapid take up of mobile data services in the last two years, driven by the introduction of more usable smartphones, such as the iphone and more attractive mobile data tariffs. However, users remain concerned about unexpected charges and bill shock. They are looking for ways to personalize and control their mobile data usage and experience. They want to monitor their roaming usage while traveling, receive notifications when they are near their monthly bandwidth limit, know how much data an application is using, and receive timely offers. Mobile operators who can meet these requirements will be rewarded by loyal customers and increased take up of mobile data services."
David Sharpley, Senior Vice President, Bridgewater Systems
“Bridgewater’s myPolicy solution revolutionizes the relationship between mobile operators and their subscribers by empowering smartphone users to personalize and manage their mobile usage and experience. This unique and innovative approach underscores Bridgewater’s policy market leadership and the compelling value we bring to mobile operators.”
Visit Bridgewater Systems at CommunicAsia 2009, stand 3J2-01, Hall 3, on the Canada/Ontario pavilion at the Singapore Expo from June 16-19, 2009. Join Bridgewater Senior Vice President David Sharpley on June 17th in press conference room K at 10:30 am to hear about the new myPolicy solution and see live demonstrations.

Ericsson launches stylish new site solution
Finding new locations for radio base stations is a growing challenge, especially in urban and suburban areas. Ericsson’s (NASDAQ:ERIC) new solution addresses this challenge by being as eye-catching, or as unobtrusive, as required in order to shorten the time needed to obtain building permission from authorities. The site is designed by renowned Scandinavian architect Thomas Sandell.
The Ericsson Capsule Site is a new innovative radio base station site designed for use in urban areas and to empower sustainable societies by enabling faster mobile broadband rollout. It is equally adept at becoming a focal point in a town square, or blending into the background at the side of a road, for example. Designed to complement any urban or suburban space – it will contribute with the fill-in coverage that is increasingly needed as demand for mobile broadband takes off.
The Ericsson Capsule Site is an “all-in-one” solution encapsulating all necessary equipment, thereby reducing installation time by up to 50 percent, and reducing costs by up to 30 percent. It is delivered in an innovative ‘flat-pack’ form, making transport significantly easier and can be assembled in less than one day. The site cover, made of composite, weighs only 800 kg.
With the possibility to customize the appearance of the site with colors and illumination, operators will have huge branding opportunities and can adapt the visual impact of the base station in an urban environment. The site can be equipped with touch screens and advertising space, providing the operator with new revenue opportunities.
Ulf Ewaldsson, Vice President and Head of Product Area Radio Networks at Ericsson, says: “Ericsson strives to constantly redefine the telecommunications landscape with its innovative technology and design. With its small footprint and ability to blend into its surroundings, the solution reflects our commitment to the development of sustainable societies. The Capsule Site provides operators with new possibilities, from increased alternatives for site locations to new revenue opportunities.”
The first Ericsson Capsule Site will be launched June 17 at the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Stockholm, Sweden. It is designed by renowned Swedish architect and designer, Thomas Sandell, who also designed the award-winning Ericsson Tower Tube.
Say Hello to Vid: Logitech Introduces Simpler, Streamlined Video Calling
Logitech Vid Software Designed Exclusively for Video Calls, Sets Up With Webcam Installation
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — June 18, 2009 — Video calls have always offered the promise of strengthening the connection between you and your distant friends and family. But for many, getting the software and hardware to work has been a challenge. If you’ve been waiting for a simpler way to make a video call, Logitech® Vid™ is the answer – the free, fast and easy way to make true-to-life video calls with your Logitech webcam on a PC or Mac® computer.
A pioneer in the development of webcams and video calling, Logitech (SIX: LOGN) (NASDAQ: LOGI) dramatically simplifies video calling with Vid by offering a streamlined setup and a simple, intuitive interface dedicated to video calling. In fact, you can set up Vid in fewer than half the steps required by the major instant-messaging programs. Vid is available for download at www.logitech.com/Vid.
Vid can also make it easy to see your loved ones in lifelike colors. From the sparkle in your daughter’s engagement ring to the smile on your grandson’s face, Vid optimizes the speed and resolution of your video call, so you’re always getting the best-possible frame rate and resolution for your webcam.
“Video calling has been around for more than a decade, but Vid truly has the potential to make video calling one of the primary ways that people stay in touch with their loved ones,” said Gina Clark, general manager and vice president of Logitech’s Internet Communications business unit. “Vid gives you the best of both worlds – eliminating the biggest obstacles to making video calls, while still providing the exceptional-quality audio and video that you expect from Logitech. Above all, you don’t need to be tech-savvy to use Vid.”
Logitech research revealed that the overwhelming reason why many people do not make video calls is that they are frustrated by complex software. Unlike video calling through IM or VoIP programs, Vid was designed exclusively for video calling. Powered by the Logitech® SightSpeed® Network, Vid is a reliable source for high-quality video calling.
Sets Up With Webcam
Vid is set up automatically when you plug in your Logitech webcam. A few clicks and you’re ready to go. There are no screen names. And there’s no third-party software to download. When you’re ready to make a video call, Vid uses your friend or family member’s e-mail address to connect. Your friend simply accepts your e-mail invitation to participate in a video call on Vid, and you’re both connected and ready to chat.
Simple, Intuitive Interface
Unlike other free software that offers video calling as another hard-to-find feature in a long list of features, Vid presents a simple, intuitive interface in which every element is designed to help you make a video call. You can make a call in just a few simple steps. Each one of your contacts is represented by a thumbnail picture. You simply click the picture of the person you want to contact, and Vid starts your video call.
Vid is free with your Logitech webcam – and for anyone you’re calling. There are no added charges. If you don’t have a Logitech webcam, you can still use Vid if a friend or family member invites you. (If you’re invited by a friend or family member that has installed Vid, but doesn’t have a Logitech webcam, you’ll get Vid free for 30 days. At the end of the 30-day period, you can use Vid with the purchase of a Logitech webcam.)
Vid is compatible with PC and Mac® computers, as well as stand-alone and embedded webcams.
Pricing and Availability
Logitech Vid is available for download at www.logitech.com/Vid and is free for anyone with a Logitech webcam. Vid is compatible with all Logitech webcams.
