BDM further enhances the capacity of the region’s networks to cater to growing data needs
Batam-Dumai-Melaka (BDM), the latest high bandwidth optical fibre submarine cable system which directly connects Malaysia and Indonesia has now been completed and ready to carry commercial data traffic starting today, 30 December 2011. The construction of BDM cable system was formalized with the signing of a Construction and Maintenance Agreement (C&MA) between Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) with PT XL Axiata Tbk (XL) and PT Mora Telematika of Indonesia in February 2011.
Commenting on the commissioning of BDM, Mohamad Rozaimy Abd Rahman, Executive Vice President of Global, TM said, “We are happy to witness the commercial rollout of yet another submarine cable system from a collaboration between TM and other telcos in the region. Today, BDM is ready to ‘go live’ and it will further enhance the capacity of the existing networks in this region to cater to growing data needs and demand for better, reliable and lower latency international connectivity to its global clients from around the world. This BDM project also demonstrated TM’s commitment to invest in the development of IP communications in the Asian region and to provide a faster and resilient Internet connection, hence a better surfing experience for Internet users.”
“The beneficiaries of the BDM are not only confined to the consortium members, but also the countries and regions that are directly connected to the two countries. As such, excellent interconnections will also be provided to other existing submarine cable systems covering Asia Pacific, Europe, USA and even the Africa seeing that many more international carriers are aiming to collaborate to build new cables with Indonesia and Malaysia. Moreover, the BDM not only offers additional international bandwidth capacity to countries in the region, it will also serve as a gateway to Asia as more international organizations move their operations toward this region to leverage on the lower cost of operations here. Subsequently, the BDM will also cater for Malaysia’s traffic requirement to Indonesia due to the ever increasing Indonesian expatriates in Malaysia,” Rozaimy added.
The BDM cable system consists of 4 fiber pairs, designed to provide 1.28 Tbps adopting Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology to provide upgradable, future-proof transmission facilities. The BDM connects approximately 400 km distance between the two countries with two routes, Melaka-Batam and Melaka-Dumai. The landing station in Malaysia is provided by TM while the Indonesian landing stations is established by XL.
Besides serving these two countries, the cable system will also provide seamless interconnection with other major cable systems connecting Europe, US, Africa and other parts of Asia via Malaysia.
TM owns or leases capacity on more than 10 submarine cable systems, which span more than 60,000 fiber-route miles around the globe, including several submarine cable routes that the company uses to carry traffic between Asia-Pacific region and North American region.
Besides BDM, TM is also a member of the various consortiums for submarine cable systems in the region, which include Asia America Gateway (AAG) submarine cable network, South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe Cable System 3 (SEA-ME-WE3 – SMW3), SEA-ME-WE4 (SMW4), Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) and the latest, TM’s wholly-owned CAHAYA MALAYSIA that will link Malaysia to Hong Kong, and Japan.

These devices will be available in early 2012 from major OEMs including: Acer*, Asus*, HP*, Lenovo*, Samsung*, and Toshiba*.
The new design’s dedicated media engine enables full 1080p high-definition playback of videos and Blu-Ray content and includes additional digital display and output options including HDMI and DisplayPort. The integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3600/3650 combined with the integrated memory controller provides enhanced performance and system responsiveness, including an improvement in graphics performance up to 2X compared to the previous generation platform.
Systems based on the new Intel® AtomTM processors may have up to 10 hours of battery life and weeks of standby, allowing for all-day use between charges. Additionally, Intel increased processor and overall system performance while reducing power consumption up to 20 percent compared to the previous platform.
Based on Intel’s leading-edge 32nm process technology, Intel incorporated several new features into the platform such as Intel® Wireless Display and Intel® Wireless Music. With these new features and wireless enabled devices, people can share videos or photos wirelessly from their netbooks to a television, or stream music through their home stereo speakers.
Additional features such as Intel® Smart Connect Technology allows users to have an instant Internet connection as soon as they open their netbook, and have email, Twitter* and RSS feeds automatically updated even in sleep mode. Intel® Rapid Start Technology enables fast resume from standby mode and helps conserve battery life.

Kaspersky Lab : Cyberthreat forecast for 2012
PETALING JAYA, December 28, 2011 - 2011 was the year that virtually all global players signaled their readiness to develop and deploy cyber weapons. The mass hysteria sparked by the discovery of the Stuxnet worm in 2010 led a number of states to start treating the use of cyber weapons against them as an act of war. However, by doing so, they are losing sight of some very important aspects of this type of threat. Take, for instance, Stuxnet. It was a unique phenomenon, designed exclusively for use at a specific time and at a specific place. And there was no readily available military solution to combat it. This is why we believe that the use of cyber weapons like Stuxnet will continue to be limited to isolated incidents. Their appearance will depend primarily on the relationship between specific states. Basically, to facilitate the creation of a cyber weapon of this standard there needs to be both an assailant and a victim. For the assailant, the problem needs to have become so serious that it can no longer be ignored, but the option of military action is out of the question. Analysis of current interstate conflicts can help predict similar incidents in the future.
This may well be true for cyber weapons such as Stuxnet, designed to carry out acts of sabotage. However other cyber weapons, used to destroy data at a given time, are likely to be more widely used. Programs such as kill switches, logic bombs etc., can be developed on a regular basis and deployed systematically. Moreover, the creation of these programs can be outsourced to private contractors used by the military, or law enforcement and intelligence agencies. In many cases the outsourcer will never know the identity of the actual client.
It is safe to say that the main cyber conflicts in 2012 will revolve around traditional confrontations: the US and Israel versus Iran, and the US and Western Europe versus China.
Mass targeted attacks
In 2011 we witnessed the emergence of new sources of malware and targeted cyber attacks. In the New Year we expect to see a significant increase in the number of new players and threats as well as high-profile incidents.
A far more effective detection process will also play a role in boosting the number of recorded attacks. An entirely separate field of the IT security industry has sprung up as a result of the problems associated with detecting and combating targeted attacks, and large companies are increasingly approaching small private firms for help in dealing with them. The growing competition in the market offering this kind of protection service will shed more light on incidents. As a result of the enhanced level of protection and the number of vendors offering help, the attackers will be forced to drastically change their methods.
At present many of the groups behind targeted attacks often don’t even bother creating specialized malware and instead use someone else’s ready-made programs. A good example is the Poison Ivy Trojan, originally created in Sweden but which has become a firm favorite with Chinese hackers. In contrast is the Duqu Trojan, a harbinger of things to come that can be modified to achieve specific aims and which makes use of dedicated command servers.
The effectiveness of traditional attack methods – the use of documents in email attachments that contain exploits for vulnerabilities – will gradually diminish. Attacks will increasingly be launched from browsers. Of course, the effectiveness of this approach will depend on the number of vulnerabilities found in popular software such as browsers, office applications and multimedia systems.
The range of companies and areas of the economy that will come under attack will expand. The majority of incidents currently affect companies and state organizations involved in arms manufacturing, financial operations, as well as hi-tech and scientific research activities. In 2012 companies in the natural resource extraction, energy, transport, food and pharmaceutical industries will be affected, as well as Internet services and information security companies. The geographic range of the attacks will increase considerably, spreading out beyond Western Europe and the US to affect countries in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and South-East Asia.
Mobile threats
Android
The unwanted attention that the Android platform has received from virus writers will intensify. In 2012 cybercriminals targeting mobile platforms will focus heavily on creating malware for Google Android. The dramatic growth in malicious programs for Android in the second half of 2011 saw Google’s operating system rank first among mobile platforms in terms of the number of threats, and there is little to suggest that the virus writers will shift their focus in the near future.
We also expect an increase in attacks making use of vulnerabilities. 2012 will see cybercriminals making active use of a variety of exploits to spread malware as well as malicious programs containing exploits that can be used to escalate privileges and gain access to a device’s operating system. Virtually all the attacks that made use of exploits in 2011 were attempts to elevate privileges to the operating system. However, in 2012 we are very likely to see the first attacks that will use exploits to infect the operating system itself. In other words, we’ll see the first mobile drive-by-download attacks.
There will be an increase in the number of malicious programs finding their way into app stores, especially Android Market. The fact that Google’s policy of checking new apps has changed very little, despite numerous malicious programs being discovered at Android Market, means the virus writers are unlikely to refrain from uploading malware to official stores.
There is a high probability that the first mass worm for Android will appear, capable of spreading itself via text messages and sending out links to itself at some online app store. We’re also likely to see the first mobile botnet on the same platform.
The activities of several virus writer groups specializing in mobile applications evolved into the wholesale manufacture of malware in 2011 – a process that will continue to develop in 2012. It means we are likely to face a full-blown mobile malware industry next year.
Other mobile platforms
· Symbian. For a long time the most popular platform among users and virus writers. Now losing ground on the mobile OS market and among cybercriminals. Therefore, we don’t expect to see significant amounts of malware for this platform.
· J2ME. We will continue to see quite a few malicious programs (more precisely, SMS Trojans) for Java 2 Micro Edition. However, their number will either remain at the same level or decrease.
· Windows Mobile. A platform that has never attracted much attention from virus writers and 2011 was no different. It will hardly be surprising if the number of malicious programs for this platform can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
· Windows Phone 7. Quite likely that the first proof-of-concept malware will appear for this platform.
· iOS. Since its arrival in 2009 two malicious programs have been detected that target cracked devices running iOS, and not much else. Don’t expect any changes in 2012, unless Apple changes its software distribution policy.
In 2012 a considerable amount of non-Android-based malware will most probably be used in targeted attacks. A typical example is the attack using ZitMo and SpitMo (Zeus- and SpyEye-in-the-Mobile).
Mobile espionage – data theft from mobile phones and the tracking of subjects using their telephones and geolocation services – will become widespread, going well beyond the traditional use of such technologies by law enforcement agencies and private investigation companies.
Attacks on online banking
In 2012, attacks on online banking systems will be one of the most widespread methods of stealing money from rank and file users. The number of crimes committed in this area is rising rapidly all over the world in spite of all the technical measures taken by banks.
In the near future, it is likely that there will be more cases of unauthorized access to online banking systems in Asian countries. That is because these services are rapidly developing in South-East Asia and China, while the region’s abundant cybercrime expertise has so far been focused on other types of attacks (including attacks on online gamers). Apart from online games, Asian cybercriminals have gained a reputation for their phishing attacks on clients of European and US banks. Now that local e-payment and banking services are developing in line with the rising standards of living in Asian countries, there will be an ever increasing number of attacks performed on local banks and users, employing dedicated, locally-focused phishing and Trojan programs.
Such attacks will most probably be targeted on mobile device users as well as PC users. Apart from South-East Asia and China, attacks may be performed on mobile payment services in East African countries.
Users’ private lives
The problem of protecting users’ confidential data is gradually becoming one of the hottest topics in IT security. Russian users have seen data leak from cellphone operators and e-commerce sites, there were the stories about the mobile software from CarrierIQ and the storing of geolocation data in iPad/iPhone, data thefts from tens of millions of clients of various systems in South Korea, the hacking of Sony PlayStation Network – to name just a few a few of the high-profile events that took place in the last year. Although these incidents varied in their causes as well as the amount and type of data stolen, they all had the same aim.
Increasingly companies all over the world are trying to collect as much information as they can about their clients. Unfortunately, this is not often supported by sufficient measures to protect the information that is gathered. The continuing development of “cloud technologies” also contributes to potential data losses: there is now an extra target for the cybercriminals to attack, i.e. the data centers where various companies’ data are stored. Data leaks from cloud services could deal a serious blow to the perception of the technology itself and the idea of “cloud storage” that largely rely on users’ trust.
As for the systems collecting user data, similar to CarrierIQ, we are convinced there will be more instances of them being exploited in 2012. Mobile providers, software and web-service manufacturers do not intend to throw away the business opportunities that arise from holding users’ data.
Hacktivism
Hacktivism, or hacker attacks as a form of protest, is now experiencing a revival and reaching new levels. Multiple attacks on various government institutions and businesses will continue in 2012 despite all the efforts of authorities arresting high-profile hacktivists. Hacktivism will increasingly have political implications, and this will be a more serious trend than in 2011 when most attacks targeted corporations or were carried out just for lulz.
However, hacktivism can also be used to disguise other attacks by distracting attention from them or setting up a false trail, thus creating an opportunity to “securely” hack an object of interest. In 2011, a number of hacktivist attacks have led to leaks of sensitive information which is undoubtedly the purpose of classic targeted attacks both in terms of commercial espionage and national interests. In these cases, hacktivists have greatly (and perhaps involuntarily) assisted other groups which can take advantage of their methods to steal information in attacks of a very different kind.
Conclusions
In summary, we expect to see the following events and trends next year in the field of cybercriminal activities:
o Cyber weapons like Stuxnet will be tailor-made for specific cases only. Cybercriminals will increasingly use simpler tools, such as kill switches, logic bombs etc. to destroy data at a required time.
o The number of targeted attacks will continue to grow. Cybercriminals will begin using new infection methods, as the effectiveness of existing methods diminishes. The range of targeted businesses and areas of economic activity will expand.
o 2012 will see cybercriminals writing mobile malware that primarily targets Google Android. We expect to see an increasing number of attacks exploiting vulnerabilities as well as the first mobile drive-by attacks.
o There will be more and more cases where malware is uploaded to official app stores, primarily to Android Market. Mobile espionage will become widespread; this will include stealing data from mobile phones, and tracking people using their telephones and geolocation services.
o In 2012, attacks on online banking systems will be one of the most widespread methods used to steal money from users. South-East Asia, China and East Africa are particularly at risk.
o Multiple attacks on various government institutions and businesses will be carried out all over the world. Hacktivism may also be used to conceal other types of attacks.

TRIGOH ACQUIRES MACROKIOSK
The Goh brothers via Trigoh Sdn Bhd buys 70% stake in IVIACROKIOSK from Goldis for RM 15 million
Kuala Lumpur, 28 December 2011
The founders of Macro Kiosk Berhad (“MACROKlOSK"), Asia’s leading multi-country mobile technology enabler, initiated a management buyout (“IVlBO”) of NIACROKIOSK from Goldie Berhad (“Goldis”) recently. The MBO by Malaysian brothers, Kenny Goh, Henry Goh and Goh Chee Seng who are the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Head of Corporate Affairs of IVIACROKIOSK respectively; will be carried out via their corporate vehicle, Trigoh Sdn. Bhd. The MBO encompasses the purchase of the 70% stake in IVIACROKIOSK currently held by Goldis for RM 15 million cash. Goldis reported that the proposed disposal was a timely opportunity for it to realise and unlock the value of its original investment in MACROKIOSK as it will result in an estimated gain of about RM9.5 million derived from the buyout proceeds at Goldis’ Group level.
Kenny Goh, Chief Executive Officer of NIACROKIOSK said, “We, along with the loyal MACROKIOSK team, are proud to have built the business from day one as a Malaysian brand. IBM continues market leadership in servers market in revenue in Q3 2011
IBM in Vietnam, Philippines and Thailand ranked #1 in overall server revenue market share for Q3 2011
Petaling Jaya, 28 December 2011 – IBM today announced continued leadership momentum within the Enterprise Server market in ASEAN, sustaining strong market share and clinching the top spot, as reported by leading IT market research and advisory firm, IDC.
According to IDC’s Asia/Pacific Quarterly Server Tracker, IBM took the top spot in the ASEAN non-x86 server market with 59.1% revenue share in Q3 2011. IBM’s success was powered by IBM Power Systems™ and System z servers. In the high-end enterprise server segment, IBM captured 78.8% revenue share in Q3 2011.
IBM’s top position in the RISC/EPIC server market was boosted by several large deals in ASEAN, helping to move the numbers in IBM’s favour. High-growth companies such as Retailink, one of Thailand’s leading distributors and maintenance providers of retail equipment and management systems in the Philippines and a subsidiary of CP All, CIMB Thai Bank in Thailand, one of Thailand’s leading banks and Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group, one of Vietnam’s largest diversified organizations with business interests in property, forestry, minerals, rubber plantation and latex processing, have been turning to IBM's Power Systems not only to drive efficiencies, cut costs and better manage their operations, but also to run advanced analytics to gain insight into business trends and improve their competitive position.
These clients’ choice was also based on the fact that POWER7 systems have been designed with innovative workload-optimizing technologies to better manage traditional applications, and also the demands of emerging applications.
IBM also recently announced a new server, the z114, a powerful version of the IBM zEnterprise System, to extend the mainframe's innovation and unique qualities to more organizations, especially companies and governments in emerging markets such as those found here in ASEAN, who are experiencing rapid growth in new services for banking, retail, mobile devices, government services and other areas. These organizations are faced with ever-increasing torrents of data and want smarter computing systems that help them operate efficiently, better understand customer behavior and needs, optimize decisions in real time and reduce risk.
The new IBM zEnterprise 114 mainframe server allows mid-sized organizations to enjoy the benefits of a mainframe as the foundation for their data centers, costs less, with dramatic savings on floor space and energy.
IBM also reported success in the growing markets of the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand, fueled by interest and success in Smarter Computing. Smarter Computing refers to smarter architecture that can help clients gain actionable insights from data, increase IT capacity and deliver new services faster to create profitable business opportunities. IBM introduced its Smarter Computing approach to information technology earlier this year as a way for organizations to realize greater efficiencies, improved reliability, and better performance, and all, at lower costs. The strategy centers around three fundamental aspects: leveraging analytics to exploit vast amounts of data for business goals; utilizing optimized systems that are designed for specific tasks; and managing as much of the IT as possible with cloud-computing technologies.
In the Philippines, IBM swept the top spot in terms of overall server revenue market share, with a 48% share, gaining 11.8 points of share over the same quarter in 2010, while IBM’s overall server market revenue was 16.9 points higher than the next closest competitor in Q3 2011.
IBM was also the number one ranked vendor in terms of market share in Philippines in Q3 2011 for:
Ø High-end Enterprise ($250k+ servers) segment with 87.1% revenue share (an impressive 74.3 points higher than the next closest competitor)
Ø In the combined total of RISC and EPIC server segment IBM captured 66% revenue share (a strong 38.6 points higher than the next closest competitor)
Ø Nonx86 Unix server revenue share at 63.4 percent (a stellar 33.9 points higher than the next closest competitor)
Ø Linux server revenue share at 46.1 percent (an acceptable 13.9 points higher than the next closest competitor
“IBM’s success is being powered by investments in differentiated systems and technologies, where we continue to lead in innovation, scalability and performance. As the Philippine economy continues to grow, clients are looking increasingly to IBM to help modernize their IT infrastructures, realize cost savings and innovate for growth. We remain focused on investing in future growth and innovating for our clients and our communities," said James Velasquez, Country General Manager, IBM Philippines.
In Vietnam, IBM was ranked as the number one server vendor, in terms of overall server revenue market share with a 44.3% share, gaining 9.2 points of share over the same quarter in 2010. IBM's overall server market revenue share in Q3 2011 was 17.5 share points higher than the next closest competitor in Q3 2011.
IBM was also the number one ranked vendor in terms of market share in Vietnam in Q3 2011 for:
Ø High-end Enterprise ($250k+ servers) segment with 84.3% revenue share (a powerful 68.6 points higher than the next closest competitor)
Ø RISC/EPIC servers segment with 74% revenue share (a compelling 59.3 points higher than the next closest competitor)
Ø Nonx86 Unix server revenue share at 74 percent (a strong 59.3 points higher than the next closest competitor)
Baruch Rubin, Country Manager of System and Technology Group, IBM Vietnam, said: “Vietnam IT market may not be huge, but certainly growing and sophisticated. As a growing market, IBM has the full attention to it, and listens to the customers and their needs. As a sophisticated market, IDC results show that the customers recognize the value that IBM servers and storage systems can bring them. Those are the two simple factors that made us number one, again, in terms of market share.”
In Thailand, IBM reclaimed the number one server vendor position, in terms of overall server revenue market share with a 44% share, gaining 1.6 points of share over the same quarter in 2010, making IBM's overall server market revenue 15.1 share points higher than the next closest competitor in Q3 2011.
IBM was also the number one ranked vendor in terms of market share in Thailand in Q3 2011 for:
Ø High-end Enterprise ($250k+ servers) segment with 82.1% revenue share (a substantial 67.9 points higher than the next closest competitor)
Ø RISC/EPIC servers segment with 45% revenue share (a stellar 15.3 points higher than the next closest competitor)
Ø Nonx86 Unix server revenue share at 45.5% (a compelling 16.5 points higher than the next closest competitor)
Ø Linux server revenue share at 42.3% (an acceptable 12.3 points higher than the next closest competitor)
Tanapong Ittisakulchai Country Manager, System & Technology Group, IBM Thailand said “Our continued momentum is being powered by our investments in differentiated systems and leadership technology, where we continue to push the envelope in terms of innovation, scalability and performance. While some of our competitors are plagued by distractions, IBM remains focused on investing in future growth and innovating for our clients. As the Thailand economy continues to grow, clients are looking increasingly to IBM to help modernize their IT infrastructures, realize cost savings and innovate for growth. IBM is committed to always finding ways to deliver value to our clients, as at the end of the day, it's about the customer, about delivering highly scalable, cost-effective, energy-efficient solutions that help clients differentiate themselves in their chosen markets."
Said Phong Taylor, Vice President, Systems & Technology Group, IBM ASEAN, "Our smarter computing initiative leverages IBM's strengths in the key areas of big data and analytics integration, optimized systems and cloud computing to transform client IT infrastructures and make them smarter. This validation of IBM’s leadership in the Enterprise Server space within ASEAN cements our stand that IBM continues to develop and deploy the powerful technologies that growing businesses need to improve efficiency, innovate and scale for future growth.”

12 Simple Steps for Going Green in 2012
As we ring in the new year, here are twelve steps that we can all take to reduce our impact on the environment
As we head into 2012, many of us will be resolving to lose those few extra pounds, save more money, or spend a few more hours with our families and friends. But there are also some resolutions we can make to make our lives a little greener. Each of us, especially in the United States, can make a commitment to reducing our environmental impacts.
"The global community, and particularly people living in industrialized societies, have put unsustainable demands on our planet's limited resources," says Robert Engelman, President of the Worldwatch Institute, a global environmental research organization based on Washington, D.C. "If we expect to be able to feed, shelter, and provide even basic living conditions to our growing population in years to come, we must act now to change."
The United Nations has designated 2012 as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. Broadening access to sustainable energy is essential to solving many of the world's challenges, including food production, security, and poverty. "With so many hungry and poor in the world, addressing these issues is critical," says Danielle Nierenberg, director of Worldwatch's Nourishing the Planet project. "Fortunately, the solutions to these problems can come from simple innovations and practices."
The Nourishing the Planet team recently traveled to 25 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, and will be soon traveling to Latin America, to research and highlight such solutions. The project shines a spotlight on innovations in agriculture that can help alleviate hunger and poverty while also protecting the environment. These innovations are elaborated in Worldwatch's flagship annual report, State of the World 2011: Innovations that Nourish the Planet.
Hunger, poverty, and climate change are issues that we can all help address. Here are 12 simple steps to go green in 2012:
(1) Recycle
Recycling programs exist in cities and towns across the United States, helping to save energy and protect the environment. In 2009, San Francisco became the first U.S. city to require all homes and businesses to use recycling and composting collection programs. As a result, more than 75 percent of all material collected is being recycled, diverting 1.6 million tons from the landfills annually----double the weight of the Golden Gate Bridge. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, for each pound of aluminum recovered, Americans save the energy resources necessary to generate roughly 7.5 kilowatt-hours of electricity----enough to power a city the size of Pittsburgh for six years!
What you can do:
Put a separate container next to your trash can or printer, making it easier to recycle your bottles, cans, and paper.
(2) Turn off the lights
On the last Saturday in March----March 31 in 2012----hundreds of people, businesses, and governments around the world turn off their lights for an hour as part of Earth Hour, a movement to address climate change.
What you can do:
Earth Hour happens only once a year, but you can make an impact every day by turning off lights during bright daylight, or whenever you will be away for an extended period of time.
(3) Make the switch
In 2007, Australia became the first country to "ban the bulb," drastically reducing domestic usage of incandescent light bulbs. By late 2010, incandescent bulbs had been totally phased out, and, according to the country's environment minister, this simple move has made a big difference, cutting an estimated 4 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2012. China also recently pledged to replace the 1 billion incandescent bulbs used in its government offices with more energy efficient models within five years.
What you can do:
A bill in Congress to eliminate incandescent in the United States failed in 2011, but you can still make the switch at home. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use only 20-30 percent of the energy required by incandescents to create the same amount of light, and LEDs use only 10 percent, helping reduce both electric bills and carbon emissions.
(4) Turn on the tap
The bottled water industry sold 8.8 billion gallons of water in 2010, generating nearly $11 billion in profits. Yet plastic water bottles create huge environmental problems. The energy required to produce and transport these bottles could fuel an estimated 1.5 million cars for a year, yet approximately 75 percent of water bottles are not recycled----they end up in landfills, litter roadsides, and pollute waterways and oceans. And while public tap water is subject to strict safety regulations, the bottled water industry is not required to report testing results for its products. According to a study, 10 of the most popular brands of bottled water contain a wide range of pollutants, including pharmaceuticals, fertilizer residue, and arsenic.
What you can do:
Fill up your glasses and reusable water bottles with water from the sink. The United States has more than 160,000 public water systems, and by eliminating bottled water you can help to keep nearly 1 million tons of bottles out of the landfill, as well as save money on water costs.
(5) Turn down the heat
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that consumers can save up to 15 percent on heating and cooling bills just by adjusting their thermostats. Turning down the heat by 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit for eight hours can result in savings of 5-15 percent on your home heating bill.
What you can do:
Turn down your thermostat when you leave for work, or use a programmable thermostat to control your heating settings.
(6) Support food recovery programs
Each year, roughly a third of all food produced for human consumption----approximately 1.3 billion tons----gets lost or wasted, including 34 million tons in the United States, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Grocery stores, bakeries, and other food providers throw away tons of food daily that is perfectly edible but is cosmetically imperfect or has passed its expiration date. In response, food recovery programs run by homeless shelters or food banks collect this food and use it to provide meals for the hungry, helping to divert food away from landfills and into the bellies of people who need it most.
What you can do:
Encourage your local restaurants and grocery stores to partner with food rescue organizations, like City Harvest in New York City or Second Harvest Heartland in Minnesota.
Go through your cabinets and shelves and donate any non-perishable canned and dried foods that you won't be using to your nearest food bank or shelter.
(7) Buy local
"Small Business Saturday," falling between "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday," was established in 2010 as a way to support small businesses during the busiest shopping time of the year. Author and consumer advocate Michael Shuman argues that local small businesses are more sustainable because they are often more accountable for their actions, have smaller environmental footprints, and innovate to meet local conditions----providing models for others to learn from.
What you can do:
Instead of relying exclusively on large supermarkets, consider farmers markets and local farms for your produce, eggs, dairy, and meat. Food from these sources is usually fresher and more flavorful, and your money will be going directly to these food producers.
(8) Get out and ride
We all know that carpooling and using public transportation helps cut down on greenhouse gas emissions, as well as our gas bills. Now, cities across the country are investing in new mobility options that provide exercise and offer an alternative to being cramped in subways or buses. Chicago, Denver, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C. have major bike sharing programs that allow people to rent bikes for short-term use. Similar programs exist in other cities, and more are planned for places from Miami, Florida, to Madison, Wisconsin.
What you can do:
If available, use your city's bike share program to run short errands or commute to work. Memberships are generally inexpensive (only $75 for the year in Washington, D.C.), and by eliminating transportation costs, as well as a gym membership, you can save quite a bit of money!
Even if without bike share programs, many cities and towns are incorporating bike lanes and trails, making it easier and safer to use your bike for transportation and recreation.
(9) Share a car
Car sharing programs spread from Europe to the United States nearly 13 years ago and are increasingly popular, with U.S. membership jumping 117 percent between 2007 and 2009. According to the University of California Transportation Center, each shared car replaces 15 personally owned vehicles, and roughly 80 percent of more than 6,000 car-sharing households surveyed across North America got rid of their cars after joining a sharing service. In 2009, car-sharing was credited with reducing U.S. carbon emissions by more than 482,000 tons. Innovative programs such as Chicago's I-GO are even introducing solar-powered cars to their fleets, making the impact of these programs even more eco-friendly.
What you can do:
Join a car share program! As of July 2011, there were 26 such programs in the U.S., with more than 560,000 people sharing over 10,000 vehicles. Even if you don't want to get rid of your own car, using a shared car when traveling in a city can greatly reduce the challenges of finding parking (car share programs have their own designated spots), as well as your environmental impact as you run errands or commute to work.
(10) Plant a garden
Whether you live in a studio loft or a suburban McMansion, growing your own vegetables is a simple way to bring fresh and nutritious food literally to your doorstep. Researchers at the FAO and the United Nations Development Programme estimate that 200 million city dwellers around the world are already growing and selling their own food, feeding some 800 million of their neighbors. Growing a garden doesn't have to take up a lot of space, and in light of high food prices and recent food safety scares, even a small plot can make a big impact on your diet and wallet.
What you can do:
Plant some lettuce in a window box. Lettuce seeds are cheap and easy to find, and when planted in full sun, one window box can provide enough to make several salads worth throughout a season.
(11) Compost
And what better way to fertilize your garden than using your own composted organic waste. You will not only reduce costs by buying less fertilizer, but you will also help to cut down on food and other organic waste.
What you can do:
If you are unsure about the right ways to compost, websites such as HowToCompost.org and organizations such as the U.S. Composting Council, provide easy steps to reuse your organic waste.
(12) Reduce your meat consumption
Livestock production accounts for about 18 percent of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions and accounts for about 23 percent of all global water used in agriculture. Yet global meat production has experienced a 20 percent growth rate since 2000 to meet the per capita increase of meat consumption of about 42 kilograms.
What you can do:
You don't have to become a vegetarian or vegan, but by simply cutting down on the amount of meat you consume can go a long way. Consider substituting one meal day with a vegetarian option. And if you are unable to think of how to substitute your meat-heavy diet, websites such as Meatless Monday and Eating Well offer numerous vegetarian recipes that are healthy for you and the environment.
The most successful and lasting New Year's resolutions are those that are practiced regularly and have an important goal. Watching the ball drop in Times Square happens only once a year, but for more and more people across the world, the impacts of hunger, poverty, and climate change are felt every day. Thankfully, simple practices, such as recycling or riding a bike, can have great impact. As we prepare to ring in the new year, let's all resolve to make 2012 a healthier, happier, and greener year for all.

Samsung and Sony Shift to New LCD Panel Business Alliance
SEOUL, Korea – 26 December 2011 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (“Samsung”) and Sony Corporation (“Sony”) today announced that the two companies have signed agreements to transition the current business relationship with respect to LCD panels.
Under the agreement, Samsung will acquire all of Sony’s shares of S-LCD Corporation (“S-LCD”), the two companies’ LCD panel manufacturing joint venture, making S-LCD a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung. In consideration for the share transfer, cash consideration of approximately KRW 1.08 trillion* will be paid to Sony by Samsung. Concurrently, the two companies have entered into a new strategic agreement for the supply and purchase of LCD panels with a goal of enhancing the competitiveness of both companies. The agreement also allows Samsung and Sony to continue cooperative engineering efforts focused on LCD panel technology.
For Sony, this transaction will enable it to monetize its shares in S-LCD and aims to secure a flexible and steady supply of LCD panels from Samsung, based on market prices and without the responsibility and costs of operating a manufacturing facility. With whole ownership of S-LCD, Samsung anticipates heightened flexibility, speed and efficiency in both panel production and business operations.
Established in April 2004, S-LCD has continued to deliver advanced and cost-competitive LCD panels to both of its parent companies, contributing to the expansion of the respective parties’ TV businesses, and the large-sized LCD TV market overall. However, LCD panel and TV market conditions have now changed. In order to respond to such challenging conditions and to strengthen their respective market competitiveness, the two companies have agreed to shift to a new LCD panel business alliance.
The share transfer and payment are targeted to close by the end of January 2012, subject to necessary approvals from regulatory authorities.
