BARCELONA, March 7, 2012 – LG Electronics (LG) unveiled its newest advanced wireless charger, WCD-800, at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012. The WCD-800 is designed in the shape of a cradle to allow to the phone to be positioned vertically to make video calls and send text messages or horizontally to view TV programs and HD movies while charging.
“As smartphones become the defacto medium for consuming multimedia content and communicating, it is not unusual to find oneself having to recharge a phone a couple times a day,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “It only made sense to turn that charging time into a positive user experience by making the Smartphone useful while sitting in the cradle.”
LG’s newest charger also eliminates the inconvenience of the cable that must be plugged into the Smartphone when recharging. With the WCD-800, charging is accomplished by simply placing the phone on the deck of the 75.8mm wide cradle. The charging area is double the size of LG’s previous wireless charger, the WCP-700.
Using electromagnetic induction, the WCD-800 relies on electric currents produced by the magnetic fields of the electric coils located under the charger. Despite its unrivaled convenience, the WCD-800 exhibits efficiency and effectiveness equivalent to that of conventional wired chargers.
LG’s wireless charger is compatible with all devices compliant with the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC)’s Qi standard, the global standard for wireless power.
The WCD-800 will be introduced first in Korea followed by North America in the first half of the year.

Equipment Spending Growth Flat in 2012; Record Fab Equipment Spending Expected for 2013
SAN JOSE, Calif. — March 6, 2012 — Semiconductor fab equipment spending is expected to remain level (0 percent increase) in 2012 according to the latest SEMI World Fab Forecast report. Eight companies, including Samsung and Intel, will keep their fab equipment spending level above $2 billion in 2012. Fab equipment spending is estimated at $38.85 billion for 2012 and a record $45.50 billion for 2013.
While the outlook for fab equipment spending in 2012 was negative two months ago, key spenders like Samsung increased spending to record levels; Hynix increased spending in 2012 by 23 percent to about US$ 3.75 billion, while UMC increased spending from $1.6 billion to $2.0 billion. In addition, Intel increased spending much more than expected, to a historic high of about $12.5 billion. If macroeconomic factors improve and other companies adjust their capex plans, then equipment spending for 2012 could even cross into positive territory.
Fab Equipment Spending (new and used)

Figure 1: Source: SEMI World Fab Forecast February 28, 2012 edition
The spending trend is expected to continue into 2013 especially for the Foundry, System LSI, MPU and NAND sectors. Companies continue to invest in upgrades and leading edge technologies, and few are ramping up fab capacity. SEMI’s latest World Fab Forecast (February 28, 2012) lists 192 facilities with equipment spending in 2012.
2010 was a good year for fab construction but 2011 was even better with a 24 percent increase YoY to $6.4 billion. For 2012, spending on construction is expected to decline by about 28 percent to $4.5 billion. Data of the World Fab Forecast show an even further decline in 2013.
Coming out of the downturn from 2010 on, yearly capacity growth is 5 to 10 percent and is expected to stay modest for the foreseeable future. However, SEMI’s fab data shows rapid increases in fab equipment spending for some segments leading also to an increase in installed capacity.
While installed capacity for DRAM is expected to level out, Flash capacity is growing rapidly between 2010 and 2013. The dedicated foundry sector will also undergo growth in installed capacity with the key contributors like TSMC, Globalfoundries and UMC. The recently released SEMI Fab database report enables data analysis by technology node, product type, region, company and fab by fab.
Lower construction spending compared to recent years, especially on new fabs, raises some concern about available capacity beyond 2013. Overall, the industry has tried to control installed capacity since coming out of the 2009 downturn. Now due to increasing demand, some segments, such as Flash, Foundry, and System LSI, are experiencing a boost in installed capacity.
The SEMI World Fab Forecast uses a bottom-up approach methodology, providing high-level summaries and graphs; and in-depth analyses of capital expenditures, capacities, technology and products by fab. Additionally, the database provides forecasts for the next 18 months by quarter. These tools are invaluable for understanding how the semiconductor manufacturing will look in 2011, 2012 and 2013, and learning more about capex for construction projects, fab equipping, technology levels, and products. Learn more about the SEMI fab databases at: http://www.semi.org/MarketInfo/FabDatabase and http://www.youtube.com/user/SEMImktstats
SEMI’s Worldwide Semiconductor Equipment Market Subscription (WWSEMS) data tracks only new equipment for fabs and test and assembly and packaging houses. The SEMI World Fab Forecast and its related Fab Database reports track any equipment needed to ramp fabs, upgrade technology nodes, and expand or change wafer size, including new equipment, used equipment, or in-house equipment.

Teach your Grandma to become a smartphone expert in 1 week
If you’re thinking of buying grandma a smartphone, or if she already has one but doesn’t know all the cool things she can do with it, here’s a step-by-step guide to get her up to speed in one week. Yes, with a little practice and patience, even grandma can go from a mobile newbie to smartphone expert!
Monday: Start with what she knows.
Ease her in by doing some of the things she did with her old phone: make a phone call, add a contact and send a text message.
● Quick Tip: Tell her, just like a desktop or laptop computer, smartphones can send email -- a great alternative to pricey text messages! When adding contacts, don’t forget to add email addresses along with phone numbers.
Tuesday: Baby steps.
Tell her she may think of it as a mobile phone, but in reality a smartphone is a tiny yet powerful computer. She can use it to go online, browse her favorite websites and download apps. To get started, try a web search: the next time she can’t remember the name of the lead actor in her favorite movie, ask her phone.
● Quick Tip: Tell her that when it comes to typing on small keyboards, practice makes perfect. Of course, she can always speak her query by using Google Voice Search -- click the mic in the search bar and start speaking!
Wednesday: Discover apps.
Tell her that a mobile application, or an app for short, is a software program designed to run on a smartphone. The sheer number and diversity of available apps is overwhelming: play games like Angry Birds, keep track of thoughts with Evernote, customize screens with Beautiful Widgets and follow online news sites with Pulse. If it’s an Android device, Android Market is the one-stop app shop.
● Quick Tip: Tell her Google mobile services puts the power of search, Google+, Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube in the palm of her hand. These apps are free to download, and are the first step in transforming a mere mobile phone into a supercharged smartphone.
Thursday: Create content and share with her friends.
Tell her that her smartphone comes with a high-tech digital camera and video recorder -- and because it’s connected to the internet, she can share everything she creates with family and friends. Take pictures and share them instantly over e-mail or through social networks, and shoot videos and upload them to YouTube.
● Quick Tip: Just like a point-and-shoot camera, tell her to focus her picture before snapping the shutter. Most smartphones let users tap the screen to focus on a particular point, but certain models have built-in face detection to locate faces in the frame and automatically set focus.
Friday: Venture out into the real world.
Tell her that her phone is a friend when she is out and she doesn’t know the locale, when the trains run, or lost the bus schedule. Google Maps for mobile is an atlas, compass, phonebook, and travel guide rolled into one. She can use Google Maps to get step-by-step directions to her next destination, and choose between driving directions, walking directions, or (in some cities) public transit.
● Quick Tip: When using Google Maps, improve location accuracy by enabling GPS through the settings menu on her smartphone. When done using Google Maps or other location-based apps, disable GPS to help conserve her phone’s battery life.
Saturday: Make her phone work for her.
Tell her that to simply type or say the word ‘makan’ into Google. Because she is searching from a smartphone, Google assumes that she wants places nearby. Her phone will give the names of the closest ones, and even put them on a map along with reviews from other diners, hours, photos and other information.
● Quick Tip: The Google Places app is a local recommendation engine. Find, rate and share places and discover new ones. With each rating, Google learns a bit more about her tastes, so she'll get better recommendations when she searches.
Sunday: Walk the bleeding edge.
Tell her that smartphones are packed with future tech, but walking the bleeding edge isn’t nearly as intimidating as she might imagine. Google Translate for mobile lets her instantly translate between more than 50 languages. Soundhound can listen to a song and identify its name and artist after just a few notes. Instant Heart Rate uses her phone’s camera to track color changes on the fingertip that are directly linked to her pulse!
● Quick Tip: Google Goggles is a mobile app that employs advanced image recognition technology to identify objects and return relevant search results. Goggles can identify products, famous landmarks, storefronts, artwork and popular images found online -- it can even solve Sudoku puzzles!

HP offers more reason to be jolly in the recent festive season with a Supermarket Sweep for its customers
Up to 14 winners got a chance to grab all they could in HP’s Ho-Ho-Yeh contest
MALAYSIA, Kuala Lumpur, 5 March 2012 – HP Malaysia’s, Personal Systems Group (PSG) rang in the recent festive season with a supermarket sweep worth nearly RM50,000 for 14 lucky contest winners at Tesco Mutiara Damansara recently.
To participate in the HP Ho-Ho-Yeh contest, customers simply needed to purchase certain models of HP notebooks or desktop PCs from authorised HP resellers during the November–December period.HP Ho-Ho-Yeh Supermarket Sweep contest winners happily showing off their trolleys full with goodies at Tesco Mutiara Damansara recently.
The winners were placed in three categories: Category 1 for purchases worth under RM1,999; Category 2 for purchases worth between RM2,000 and RM3,499; and Category 3 for purchases worth RM3,500 and above.
Category 1 winners were entitled to a two-minute sweep worth up to RM2,000 while Category 2 winners got a two and a half minutes sweep worth up to RM3,000. Category Three winners, on the other hand, were entitled to a three-minute sweep worth up to RM5,000.Siew Yoke Mei who participated at HP Ho-Ho-Yeh Supermarket Sweep contest walks home with a TV, Blu-ray disc player, notebook computer and a digital camera during her three-minute sweep worth up to RM 5,000 at Tesco Mutiara Damansara recently.
Making an impressive haul was Siew Yoke Mei, who was eligible for the RM5,000 limit.
She said that strategic planning was crucial to her netting items worth a total RM5,024.
“I came to the store with my husband a day before the actual supermarket sweep and we had noted down exactly which items to go for,” she said.
Siew focused her attention to the electronics section where she managed to take home a TV, Blu-ray disc player, notebook computer and a digital camera, among other electronic items.
“I do grocery shopping every week and I know how much time it takes to shop. There is no way I could go to all the other sections within the time limit so I only focused on one area which was the electronics section,” she added with a satisfied grin.
Vishnu Appanah also had a chance to take home up to RM5,000 worth of goods but only managed to grab about half that value.
“I ran out space in my supermarket trolley and had to get another one. This took time so I couldn’t take more items,” he explained.
Nonetheless, Vishnu, who purchased an HP EliteBook 8450 to participate in the HP Ho-Ho-Yeh Supermarket Sweep contest, still managed to grab a flatscreen TV as well as a number of other household items.
“I’m very happy with what I managed to get especially since it’s the festive season at the moment. I will be able to enjoy all the items I got with my family over the holidays and that’s more than I could ask for,” Vishnu said.
Another contest winner who planned her strategy before the actual supermarket sweep was Masrifah Norhafidah Abu Massuut.
“I came to the store last night to survey the place and did my planning beforehand,” she said.
“As they sounded the buzzer indicating my turn to start, the first thing I did was go for the TV set located to the left of the entrance,” Masrifah, who purchased a HP Pavilion g4 notebook to qualify for the contest, added.
Unlike Siew who focused on the electronics section, Masrifah also managed to grab a number of household items from the other sections of the supermarket and took home a total of RM2,249 worth of goods.
Generally, the contest winners found the supermarket sweep a lot of fun.
They said that it was great to see that a company like HP rewards its loyal customers, and especially so on such festive seasons like Christmas and Chinese New Year.
For the 14 lucky contest winners, it was a great way to start the new year.

The Typhoon and the Moon: A Story in Breakthrough Technology
Warton, United Kingdom – Building one of the most advanced jet fighters in the world is a challenge for any aerospace company – but the one thing you might think you don‟t have to worry about when you start such a job is the pull of the moon.
But that is exactly the challenge faced by workers at BAE Systems on the Lancashire coast every time the Typhoon build process begins – because the moon‟s gravitational pull actually causes the ground to move beneath their feet.
So fine are the tolerances now used to build the Typhoon that even the movements of the tide could throw the jet fighter tolerances out.
Martin Topping, Typhoon final assembly operations manager explains: “Every time the moon pulls the tide in and out, the ground under our feet actually moves by between one and two millimetres. That might not sound a lot, but given the tolerances we are working to on Typhoon, two millimetres is two millimetres too much.”
To get round the problem BAE Systems has spent over £2.5million putting in special automated alignment facilities which use laser-trackers and computer-automated jacks. But what really ensures that each Typhoon‟s airframe is built as close to perfection as is humanly possible are the giant „floating‟ concrete rafts on which the aircraft and measuring equipment sit.
“Each of these concrete rafts is over three metres deep and 18 metres long,” says Martin. “All 9 automated jacks and both laser trackers are positioned on one surface ensuring all movement is relative, achieving a near perfect alignment whatever the moon may be doing.”
The result is one of the most perfectly aligned fast jet airframes in the world. Although 15 metres long from tip to tip, every Typhoon that leave BAE Systems in Warton varies from true no more than the thickness of a match stick – and that helps its „fly by wire‟ computer system accurately control the aircraft, designed to be unstable but hugely agile.
Because of this build accuracy there is minimal need to „trim‟ the flying surfaces and pilots can fly the fighter to its maximum potential. On a typical sortie, this build precision will save enough fuel to fill up an average family car (60 litres).

Microsoft Malaysia underscores its National Plan commitment to transform Malaysia through education by empowering all 25,000 UM students with Microsoft Office software
Kuala Lumpur, 5 March 2012 – The University of Malaya together with Microsoft Malaysia and Prestariang are taking on the Government’s call to invest in human capital development by empowering all 25,000 University of Malaya students with genuine versions of the Microsoft Office 2010 productivity suite, an essential tool for success in today’s business environment, through a collaborative effort known as the “Hedstart Program”.
The launch of the Hedstart Program at University of Malaya’s campus this morning was hailed as a significant achievement and an excellent example of a private-public partnership that moves forward the government’s agenda towards transforming Malaysia, in tandem with the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s vision to enhance creativity, innovation and competitiveness among students.Launch of the Hedstart Program held at University of Malaya where Microsoft Malaysia hopes to underscore its National Plan commitment to transform Malaysia through education by empowering all 25,000 UM students with Microsoft Office software. From left: Ybhg. Prof Datuk Dr. Rohana Yusof Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs), University of Malaya; Dr. David Asirvatham, Director, Centre of Information Technology, University of Malaysia; Dr. Abu Hasan Ismail, Chief Executive Officer, Prestariang System Sdn Bhd; Mr. Aanth Lazarus, Managing Director, Microsoft Malaysia.
Recently, the Prime Minister said that creating a high income nation will mean higher wages throughout the economy as growth is derived not only from the capital but from the greater productivity through the use of skills, innovation, improved coordination with international standards and intellectual property rights.
“The Hedstart Program is the answer to this call, and we are proud to empower 25,000 of our students with genuine Microsoft Office 2010 software which we believe will impart world-class knowledge and resources to develop students to become highly skilled and confident to face the globally benchmarked accreditation,” said Datuk Prof. Dr. Rohana Yusof, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs), University of Malaya.
She also added that University of Malaya welcomed the collaboration with Microsoft Malaysia to rollout this campus-wide milestone that will further improve their education ecosystem and increase the competitiveness and capabilities of their students. “Microsoft Malaysia’s continuous support to provide quality education and eagerness to invest in the country’s education strategy is not only vital to create an excellent education platform for the future generation but also essential for Malaysia to achieve a developed status by the year 2020.”
According to Ananth Lazarus, Managing Director of Microsoft Malaysia, the decision to collaborate with the University of Malaya is part of Microsoft’s overarching National Plan – a long-standing commitment to help accelerate Malaysia’s transformation into a technologically advanced, high-income country, based on three strategic commitments – namely to transform education, businesses and Malaysian lives through the power of technology. He explained, “The effort we have put in through the Hedstart Program is grounded in our passion and promises encapsulated in a National Plan to help transform Malaysia together with the various communities and stakeholders who are also committed to the country’s future.”
“For the past 20 years, Microsoft, through its people, partnerships and technology, has been Malaysia’s trusted and long-term partner in accelerating the country’s education ecosystem through initiatives such DreamSpark, which provides students with Microsoft software design and development tools at no charge; the Imagine Cup, known as the “World Cup” of student technology competitions; the Partners in Learning Initiative, where we have trained more than 200,000 teachers as part of our continuous effort in helping successful pedagogy delivery through the use of IT; as well as various other programs aimed at transforming education for Malaysians. Our investment and commitment has made an impact on more than one million students,” continued Ananth.
He added, “In bringing the very best business productivity tools of tomorrow for today’s students at the University of Malaya, I am confident that this is good progress towards transforming the educational landscape of Malaysia and further cultivate potential leaders of tomorrow for the betterment of the country.”
This collaboration could not have been possible without Microsoft Malaysia’s partner, Prestariang Berhad, one of the leading software licence distribution and management organisations in Malaysia who been a catalyst to this successful partnership.
“Focusing on ICT training and certification, our role is to advocate, educate and prepare students with the right productivity tools. Universities present the best platform for us to reach out and spread this valuable message across to students. Together with Microsoft Malaysia, we are working very closely with other higher learning institutions in Malaysia to nurture thousands of students to adopt genuine software by the end of this year. It’s an amazing feat and we are in the midst of replicating this initiative to other higher learning institutions to drive compliance which is crucial to our nation’s progress,” said Dr. Abu Hasan Ismail, Chief Executive Officer, Prestariang.
Through the Headstart Program, students will not only own a Microsoft Office 2010 productivity suite which they are able to retain after graduating, but will also be able to access more than 200 software under the MSDN Academic Alliance program. Ultimately, Microsoft seeks to equip students in public universities with this valuable software under the campus agreement program with the Ministry of Higher Education.

Hor, Joon Han, Adrian Teh, Zaidan Zainudin, and special guest from New York Michael Helfman in a special preview of the EOS C300 and launch of the EOS 5D Mark III. It offers the best combination of being affordable and also packed with revolutionized features that will redefine the way you take photos and shoot movies,” said Simon Wong, Director of the Imaging Communication Products Division of Canon Marketing (Malaysia).
Interestingly, this year marks the 75th anniversary of Canon Inc. and each guest received a special commemorative gift in the form of the miniature Hansa Camera. The Hansa Camera is the very first commercial camera produced by Canon in 1936. Notably, this year also sees Canon Marketing (Malaysia) celebrating its 25th anniversary in the Malaysian market.
Class-topping image quality is generated by a full-frame 22.3-megapixel CMOS sensor with a rapid drive that can shoot up to 6 frames per second (fps). Powered by Canon's state-of-the-art DIGIC 5+ image processor, the EOS 5D MARK III is capable of incredible ISO speeds of up to 25600 (expandable to L:50, H1: 51200, H2: 102400). A newly expanded 61-point Auto-Focus (AF) system makes it easier to track subjects with higher levels of precision and speeds.
Designed for the needs of advanced amateur photographers, filmmakers and professional photographers in all areas of photography, the EOS 5D MARK III is a powerful camera that blurs the line between mid-range and professional-grade cameras by providing amazingly fast, and stunning full-frame image capture at an affordable price.Superior Image Quality
At the heart of the EOS 5D MARK III is a new 36 x 24mm full-frame CMOS sensor, with approximately 22.3 effective megapixels; up from the EOS 5D Mark II's 21.1-megapixels. Just as the EOS 5D Mark II earned a reputation for taking high quality still images and Full HD movies, the Canon has once again raised the bar with the EOS 5D MARK III.
But the benefits of this new sensor goes beyond just pixel count – its standard ISO sensitivity has been expanded two-stops to reach ISO 25600 (up from the EOS 5D Mark II's 6400). This can be further expanded to an astounding ISO 102400. This added light-receiving efficiency was made possible by a new gapless micro lens array and improved photo diodes. While the numbers themselves are impressive enough, photographers will be truly amazed by the EOS 5D MARK III's ability to take photos at ISO 25600 with roughly the same noise levels as the EOS 5D Mark II at ISO 6400. This balance of ISO sensitivity and high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, as well as a new customizable “Auto ISO” function, grants photographers freedom of expression even in low light.Assisting the EOS 5D MARK III in achieving such clear images is the DIGIC 5+, Canon's latest and most powerful image processor. The DIGIC 5+ processor is 17x faster than EOS 5D Mark II’s DIGIC 4. The new processor uses a newly developed advanced algorithm to achieve the highest possible image quality at low noise. The overall enhancements made in the EOS 5D MARK III improves movie shooting performance and increases continuous shooting speeds to approximately 6 fps at full 22.3-megapixel resolution.
On top of these new developments, the EOS 5D MARK III is also capable of real-time chromatic aberration correction, in-camera RAW processing, and lens distortion correction (using in-camera RAW processing).
Enhanced AF System
The EOS 5D Mark II featured a 9-point AF system, but the new EOS 5D MARK III greatly improves a newly designed 61-point High Density Reticular AF System; the very same one found in Canon's flagship EOS-1D X. With this new AF system, the number of cross-type points has been increased to a maximum of 41 (f4.0 sensitive), with f/2.8 sensitive dual cross-type points as the central five points. The central cluster of 21 AF points are also f/5.6 sensitive cross-type sensors.
With the enhanced AF coverage, not only will it be easier for photographers to compose portraits and track fast-moving subjects, but the system is also advanced enough that photographers are able to use f/4.0 lenses and still achieve the same rapid AF speed as an f/2.8 lens on the EOS 1D Mk IV. The new AI Servo AF III tracking speed and accuracy is similar to the EOS 1DX, allowing the 5D Mark III to be a very capable camera for sports, action and wildlife photography.
Incredibly rapid response
When it comes to photographing sports and wildlife, speed is a necessity for serious photographers. The EOS 5D MARK III's CMOS sensor has been upgraded to make use of eight data channels (twice as many as the EOS 5D Mark II), which works in tandem with the enhanced data processing speeds of the new DIGIC 5+.
The EOS 5D MARK III's shutter-release time lag has significantly decreased with better mechanisms to power the reflex mirror to render it more efficient. The EOS 5D MARK III employs a new level-type device to suppress mirror bounce; with this, the DSLR is able to achieve a time-lag response of only 59 milliseconds, equaling the EOS 7D's class-leading speed, and providing ample time for AF and AE computations.
With these technologies supplemented by the aforementioned 61-point AF system, photography enthusiasts can rest assured that the EOS 5D MARK III will not miss the perfect shot when it comes to moving subjects.
Superb moving pictures
The EOS 5D Mark II was the first EOS camera equipped with the EOS Movie function, and quickly revolutionized the film-making industry when it saw use in the production of commercials, TV dramas and movies. In designing the EOS 5D MARK III, Canon's developers worked with professional cinematographers to come up with a new version of EOS Movie that produces videos of an even higher quality.
Between the new CMOS sensor and the fast processing speeds of the new DIGIC 5+, the EOS 5D MARK III is able to solve a common video problem by significantly reducing color artifacts and moiré in areas containing striped patterns. The power of the DIGIC 5+ also grants the EOS 5D MARK III an increase in S/N ratio, so that videos shot in dimly-lit environments will have noticeably reduced noise, even at higher ISO speeds.
For increased editing flexibility, the EOS 5D MARK III is able to shoot at all the popular frame rates and quality, ranging from Standard Definition all the way to Full HD, in 30P/25P/24P. As a response to the feedback and requests from film editors, the EOS 5D MARK III supports both ALL-I and IPB compression modes to suit different post-production work-flows. ALL-I results in larger files, but editing is made easier as the frames are individually compressed. IPB compresses frames in groups, which reduces file sizes but increases decoding times.
Professionals who shoot live events such as weddings will sometimes need to record longer takes. The EOS 5D MARK III makes this possible as videos it will automatically create a new video file and continue shooting once a file reaches 4GB (the maximum file size for FAT file systems). There is no lapse in shooting between files, so editors will be able to cleanly splice these files together without any glaring jump cuts.
Creative features
Beyond the class-leading image quality, the EOS 5D MARK III has also been designed with a set of creative features to help photographers push their creative limits. One such tool is the new High Dynamic Range mode, which combines three images shot at different exposures to form one single detailed image. It does this by taking one shot at the recommended exposure, one that is deliberately over-exposed and then one that is under-exposed. The over-exposed image provides visual data for the subtle gradations in shadowy areas, while the under-exposed image provides visual data for bright areas that would be blown out under normal exposures. The combination of these images forms a single image that contains clear details and tones in all areas.
Other creative functions include the ability to take multiple exposures to super-impose different images on top of one another. This can lead to artistic juxtaposition of different images, or it can be used in conjunction with the EOS 5D MARK III's speedy 6 fps continuous shooting mode to recreate the appearance of motion in a shot of a moving subject.
Ease of use
The EOS 5D MARK III has a new 3.2” tempered-glass 1.04 million dot Clear View LCD II monitor, with a wide 3:2 aspect ratio, making it easier to frame shots, review images and navigate menus. To reduce glare when in sunny outdoor locations, there is an optical elastic polymer between the LCD and protective panel that reduces reflections. Furthermore, an AR coating on the surface provides additional glare reduction.
Built for steadfast high performance in the harshest shooting conditions, the EOS 5D Mark III sports a greatly improved shutter durability, with lightweight yet sturdy shutter blades withstand an amazing 150,000 shutter cycles. An increased resistance towards dust and water also feature largely in the EOS 5D Mark III's overall reliability.
To benefit users who primarily use their cameras for shooting movies, the EOS 5D MARK III's Quick Control Dial includes an inner ring that is triggered by an electrostatic touch sensor. With this silent control, cinematographers are able to change settings while shooting movies without any risk of accidentally recording any clicking sounds from the control dial.
A redesigned battery grip
Supplementing the EOS 5D MARK III is the new BG-E11 battery grip, ergonomically designed to facilitate vertical shoots and longer battery life. It is made of the same magnesium alloy as the EOS 5D MARK III, with identical dust and water resistant qualities, and comes with a multi-controller and a customizable multi-function button. The battery access of the grip has been relocated to the side, allowing for a curved form that provides a comfortable grip for horizontal and vertical shooting.
On the strength of its image quality alone, the EOS 5D MARK III would already be a class-leading camera. But Canon has not rested on its laurels and has upgraded the EOS 5D MARK III with a host of new features, making it a remarkable full-frame mid-range DSLR that will surely meet the needs of advanced amateurs and cinematographers. The 5D Mark III has evolved into an extremely versatile DSLR with very significant improvement in image quality (including video image quality), and inheriting a professional level AF system. It is now able to meet the most stringent demands of all types of photographers and videographers, including sports, landscape, portraits and wildlife.
