SEAMOBILE Adopts Blue Coat Appliances to Speed Internet Access on Cruise Ships

MALAYSIA, 13 September, 2007 – Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BCSI), a leader in WAN Application Delivery and Secure Web Gateway, today announced that SeaMobile has selected Blue Coat® ProxySG® appliances to accelerate email traffic and Web access for passengers using Internet cafés on cruise ships. Blue Coat’s ProxySG appliances accelerate applications, email and Web content and optimize bandwidth usage over satellite links. This results in increased performance, allowing for more users and new services that SeaMobile is offering on cruise ships. It also improves the passenger’s experience when using the onboard Internet cafes.

“People expect fast Internet access wherever they go and this is certainly true on our ships,” said Livio Arleo, director Internet Development and Deployment, SeaMobile. “Our initial deployment shows that Blue Coat ProxySG appliances provide a dramatic increase in speed in the delivery of email and Web content while improving bandwidth usage. Acceleration, combined with optimized bandwidth, results in our ability to support more users and a significant improvement in the Internet café experience for passengers.”

Accelerate Applications and Bandwidth over Satellite
Satellite Internet access often involves high latency because the signals must travel great distances between a ground station, an orbiting satellite and a ship. High latency introduces lengthy response times for email, Web surfing and other applications compared to a land-based experience.

“Internet access or WAN over satellite is challenging because of the great distances involved and the limitations in bandwidth,” said Bethany Mayer, senior vice president, Worldwide Marketing, Blue Coat. “SeaMobile brings the power of the Internet to the sea, and our ProxySG appliances help overcome the distance barriers to dramatically accelerate those connections and simultaneously optimize bandwidth usage.”

Blue Coat’s MACH5 Acceleration Technology
Blue Coat ProxySG appliances utilize the company’s MACH5 patent-pending framework of acceleration technologies designed to accelerate all key enterprise applications, including Web and secure Web applications (SSL), file services, email/Microsoft Exchange and video. Since the MACH5 technology is integrated in Blue Coat ProxySG appliances, it enables organizations to manage all of their user/application interactions—to stop undesirable applications, regulate less important applications and accelerate critical applications.
