Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) recently announced the winners of its TM eSchool LCMS Content Creation Competition, which was held in conjunction with Malaysia’s 50th Merdeka celebrations.

The competition ran for two months from July 1 – August 30, 2007. The objective of the competition was to increase the usage of the LCMS application by exposing students and teachers to the advantages of using this e-learning tool. LCMS was introduced through TM eSchool project, which was launched in April this year.

A total of 58 groups from three schools, which are part of the TM eSchool pilot project namely, Methodist Boys’ School, Kuala Lumpur (MBS); Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan USJ12, Subang Jaya (SMK USJ12); Sekolah Menengah Seksyen 11, Shah Alam (SMK Seksyen 11) participated in the competition. Each group consisted of a teacher (who is designated as the group leader) and four students.

At the prize giving ceremony held last Friday, En. Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Chief Executive Officer, Malaysia Business, Telekom Malaysia Berhad said, “We found that the LCMS competition was successful in unlocking the hidden potential of our students through the use of information technology. This was despite the fact that the participating schools were just familiarizing themselves with an advanced integrated e-learning application.”

“We have fulfilled our objective while at the same time nurturing interest in using online school teaching and learning facilities among the school communities through programmes like this. This is also part of TM’s ongoing efforts in increasing higher awareness on the benefits of broadband, as we continue to offer more exciting and compelling content and applications to our customers. We hope that the program will lead to the development of quality, home-grown education applications that are of international standards.”

Ms Shirley Tan and her team from SMK USJ 12 emerged as the first prize winner in the inter-school competition. Second prize was won by Mrs S. Munniammiah and her students from MBS while the third prize went to Mr. Gopala Krishnan a/l Ratha Krishnan and his team from MBS.

Datuk Dr. Halim Shafie, Chairman, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) who was present at the ceremony said, “TM’s implementation of its e-learning applications in the education sector via its TM eSchool initiative together with this Content Creation Competition will help to cultivate the culture of ICT usage amongst teachers, and parents while enhancing the technical skills in the local education fraternity. More than just an infrastructure deployment exercise, it is coupled with the sharing of knowledge and expertise where this comprehensive program is essentially bringing real-world applications to the young.”

“The recently unveiled Budget 2008 has seen the Malaysian Government setting a target of 50% of the country’s households to have broadband by 2010, an increase from the current 12%. This will be done through a more effective partnership between the public and private sector similar to the one between TM and MCMC. Initiatives such as the TM eSchool will pave the way for broadband penetration to increase further.”

To participate, groups were required to create e-learning content based on any subject of their choice from the school syllabus using LCMS. The theme of the competition was ‘Malaysia’s 50th Merdeka Celebrations.’

The winners were selected based on several criteria, which included language, relevance of the content to the syllabus, concept, creativity, usage of multimedia tools and incorporation of elements of independence.
