TM LAUNCHES ITS FIRST REGIONAL DATA CENTRE FACILITY IN HONG KONG

First TM data centre facility outside of Malaysia in line with Group’s aspiration to be a regional ICT and BPO power house and supporting Malaysia as the Regional Data Centre Hub by 2015

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), Malaysia’s leading new generation communications provider and broadband champion, today launched its first regional data centre facility in Hong Kong.

Located within a Class A office facility of Billion Centre in the famous Kowloon Bay area, the data centre named VADS Hong Kong Data Centre (HKDC) is expected to meet the increased demand for cloud-based services, via its ICT arm, VADS Berhad (VADS) which provides Managed ICT services. Speaking at the launch of HKDC, Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM shared, “Hong Kong is the natural choice when it comes to deciding the location of our first data centre outside Malaysia. This country has a strategic capability that attracts most of the MNCs and foreign carriers to set up and expand their business in the Asia Pacific. Nobody can deny that Hong Kong is an established business hub in this region.”

“From a telecommunications hubbing point of view, Hong Kong is indeed at the centre of the regional scene, acting as the landing point of most major submarine cable systems, including APCN2, AAG, SMW3, Asia Pacific Gateway (APG), Tyco Global Network-Intra Asia (TGN-IA), East Asia Crossing City-to-City (EAC-C2C) and Cahaya Malaysia. So, as a telco with regional aspirations, TM cannot afford not to have our presence here in Hong Kong,” he added.

With the opening of HKDC, TM customers would now be able to enjoy the integrated data centre services offered via consolidation of the data centres in Malaysia with other global data centres, and the diversity for the co-location services in Hong Kong to support disaster recovery plan. HKDC will also serve as a One Stop Centre for Telcos and ICT business process outsourcing (BPO) solutions.

Most importantly, the opening of this data centre marks the expansion of TM’s ICT and BPO footprint outside Malaysia to enhance TM’s ability to meet the expectations and requirements of the industry as well as generating new revenue streams in line with the Group’s aspiration to be a regional ICT and BPO power house and supporting Malaysia as the Regional Data Centre Hub by 2015 via VADS Berhad.

HKDC is an extension of the already existing 14 data centres established by TM via its ICT arm, VADS, throughout Malaysia. Its design is based on the existing data centres for ease of maintenance, continuity and connectivity. With a total build up space exceeding 14,000 sq ft, HKDC is built as a Green Data Centre with the coalescence of hot and cold aisle containment system together with a Tier III+ design.

Potential customers are offered the best security system which encompasses; a guarantee of 99.98% site availability, 24/7, 365 days of state-of-art security using Integrated Environmental Monitoring System (IEMS) that monitors temperature and humidity, CCTV, network, water detection, fire alarm panel, air conditioning and generators. With round-the-clock monitoring by highly dedicated specialists at the Network Operation Centre from a highly secured room, customers are assured of 24-hour support every day of the year.

Commenting on the location’s selection, Rozaimy Abd Rahman, Executive Vice President, Global, TM, said, “Apart from being an established business hub in the Asia Pacific region and its strategic capability in attracting companies setting their businesses in the Asia Pacific, Hong Kong has also been Asia’s second largest destination for foreign direct investment, trailing only mainland China for 12 consecutive years. In terms of ease of connectivity, Hong Kong is also the landing point of major submarine cable systems, namely; Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2), Asia America Gateway (AAG), South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe Cable System 3 (SEA-ME-WE3 – SMW3), Asia Pacific Gateway System (APG), Tyco Global Network (TGN), C2C, Cahaya Malaysia and East Asia Crossing (EAC).”

TM owns or leases capacity on more than 10 submarine cable systems, which span more than 60,000 fiber-route miles around the globe, including several submarine cable routes that the company uses to carry traffic between Asia-Pacific region and North American region.

TM is also a member of the various consortiums for submarine cable systems in the region, which include Asia America Gateway (AAG) submarine cable network, South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe Cable System 3 (SEA-ME-WE3 – SMW3), SEA-ME-WE4 (SMW4), Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) and Batam-Dumai-Melaka (BDM), and TM’s wholly-owned CAHAYA MALAYSIA.
