GEORGE TOWN, October 15, 2012 – The rain could not dampen their spirits, as more than 7,000 Intel employees celebrated Intel’s achievements and success over 40 years of operations in Malaysia. Intel’s 40th anniversary Street Carnival, held within Penang campus grounds, marked the culmination of a year-long celebration that kicked off with a launch event earlier this year.
“Our people are our greatest assets. Today marks a significant milestone for Intel in Malaysia and we attribute our ongoing success to all our dedicated employees, both past and present,” said Robin Martin, Managing Director of Intel Malaysia.
Intel also accorded special recognition to ten long service employees – who have worked and journeyed with Intel Malaysia for 39 years now.
“We are very proud to have ten valued employees who have spent the bulk of their working lives with us. The fact that they have been with us for nearly four decades is a testament of Intel’s reputation as a great place to work. We truly value their dedication and determination throughout these years,” Robin said.
Steven Loh, one of the ten long-service employees, joined Intel as a technician in June 1973. Since then, he has built his career and undertaken various technical roles in the company. Today he assumes the position of a Senior Platform Design Engineer with the Intelligent Systems Group, working on Intel latest and most advanced technologies with other Intel counterparts around the world.
“Intel is not just a place of work for me – this is where I’ve gained new skills and knowledge. It feels great to be part of the global Intel family. Every single day is still an exciting journey for us all at Intel,” said Loh.
Since its establishment here in 1972, Intel Malaysia has grown from an assembly plant with a staff of 100 to being one of Intel’s most complex offshore sites. Intel’s initial investment of US$1.6 million (RM5.6 million) when it first started operations has now grown to more than US$4 billion (RM12.22 billion).
Today, Intel Malaysia runs its operations with key competencies that support Intel Corporation’s various platform challenges. This includes its role as one of Intel Corporation’s largest Assembly, Test and Manufacturing (ATM) facilities contributing significantly to Intel Corporation’s high volume manufacturing.
In addition, Intel Malaysia has built strong credentials in design and development with two design centers in Malaysia under the Intel Architecture Group: a Chip Design Center in Penang and a Board Design Center in Kulim. Furthermore, Intel Malaysia plays a strategic role as the regional and global centre for shared services in IT, Finance and Human Resources.
Intel Malaysia’s operations are currently conducted out of a high-tech campus with 10 buildings on the island as well as on the mainland in Kulim, Kedah.
“As Intel continues to grow in Malaysia, we will seek to move Intel Malaysia up the value chain to focus on high-value activities such as design & development and R&D. Our goal is for Intel Malaysia to be innovation-driven, in line with the government’s vision of becoming a high-income economy,” said Robin.
