th 9 annual HITBSecConf features “A Conference That Never Ends” 24 Hours of Non-Stop Action, Top Speakers In Store

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, 4 September 2011 – Hack in the Box Security Conference (HITBSecConf), Asia’s largest and most popular network security conference, returns for its ninth consecutive year in Malaysia on 10-13 October 2010 at InterContinental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur with round-the-clock action and top speakers in store.

HITBSecConf has routinely brought together some of the world’s most well-recognized mainstream and underground (blackhat) security specialists. The two-day conference, hands-on technical trainings and research presentations have made international headlines as they expound on common network, software and device security flaws and fixes in today’s highly connected world.

“HITBSecConf’s main focus is on new and ground-breaking attack and defense methods that have not been seen or discussed in public before,” said Dhillon Andrew Kannabhiran, Founder/Chief Executive Officer, Hack in The Box.

This year, HackWEEKDAY makes a debut in the program. A 24-hour hackathon kicking off at 13:37 (GMT+8) on the 12th of October and ending a full 24‐hours later on the 13th, HackWEEKDAY is expected to draw top coders from all walks of life who will come together and work on open source security tools including the Xandora.net Project, Dilligence, Maltego and Mozilla Firefox plugins. “What this effectively means is that HITB2011KUL will be a conference that 'doesn't end'!,” said Kannabhiran.

Top Industry Speakers and Presentation Highlights

This year’s event will see a one-hour opening keynote by Dr. Kenneth Geers, the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) Cyber Subject Matter Expert. Here, Dr. Geers will compare and contrast the national security implications of Wikileaks – the new pen, and Stuxnet – the new sword.

Day Two’s keynote by Jennifer Granick (Attorney, ZwillGen PLLC) will track trends surrounding national privacy transgressions and government (mis)approaches, and asks what role hackers and other activists should play in the privacy/security/transparency debate.

Hacking Androids for Profit by Riley Hassell (Founder, Privateer Labs) is a much sought-after speaker expected to draw a large crowd as it offers insight into the inner working of Android apps and the risks any user faces when installing and using apps from the marketplace. He will reveal previously undisclosed vulnerabilities in vendor apps installed on millions of mobile phones and techniques to evade all available security solutions.

Skype Vulnerabilities: Zero Day Exploitation 2011 by Benjamin Kunz (Founder, Vulnerability Lab) will offer the first in depth view and analysis of the bugs that were found in Skype and exclusive attack schemes.

Air Travel Hacking: Understanding And (Ab)Using The Global Distribution System by Hendrik Scholz who developed and managed one of the largest VoIP installations in Europe, introduces attendees to basics of air travel booking systems. He will show shortcomings of the online airline ticket reservation systems which can be abused for cheaper or ‘better’ travel.

In addition to these, HITB2011KUL will also feature an all new Capture The Flag - Weapons of Mass Destruction game, an updated Lock Picking Village with a focus on ‘safe cracking’, and a new Hackerspaces ‘Playground’ for those looking to get into hardware and electronics hacking. The playground will also feature LEGO robotics, microcontrolers, LEDs, lasers, RFID toys, hardware sniffing and other cool technologies.

Hack In The Box and MAKNA to Organise Charity Movie Screening of Freedom Downtime and Urchin

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, (25 June 2007) – Hack in the Box (M) Sdn Bhd (HITB), the organiser of Asia’s largest network security conference HITBSecConf, together with Malaysian National Cancer Council (MAKNA), will be organising a charity screening of two movies at the upcoming Hack in The Box Security Conference 2007 (HITBSecConf2007) in September.

This is the first time that the two movies, Freedom Downtime and Urchin, are being brought to Asia Pacific with Malaysia being the first country to screen it. The charity screenings will be held over two days from 3-4 September at KL Hilton. There will be four screening sessions on 3 September and an additional three screening sessions on 4 September. Ticket prices start at minimum RM20 and all proceeds from both movies will be donated to MAKNA.

Freedom Downtime is directed and produced by Emmanuel Goldstein. Meanwhile, Urchin stars both Emmanuel Goldstein and Mark Abene. Both Goldstein and Abene, who will be present during the screenings in Kuala Lumpur, are well-known figures in the underground hacker scene. They will also be speaking at the HiTBSecConf 2007 event which will run from 3-6 September.

“We are honoured to collaborate with MAKNA again this year for the charity screening and we hope to raise awareness in the country on understanding and treating cancer”, said Dhillon Andrew Kannabhiran, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of HITB.

Through this charity screening, both HITB and MAKNA hope to educate the public about cancer – a deadly disease that threatens human lives worldwide and is the no. 1 cause of death in Malaysia.

“Cancer and security do have one thing in common – knowledge of both issues is something that we need to instil among the society because like hacking you will not know when it will strike and it is important that we are well prepared for it,” said Vemanna Appannah, Manager at MAKNA. “MAKNA’s relationship with HITB began in 2006, and we are glad that HITB has continued to support our initiatives every year.”

Eric Corley aka Emmanuel Goldstein is the co-founder/editor of ‘2600: The Hacker Quarterly’. He also hosts America’s only hacker radio show. 2600 is the oldest running hackers’ magazine and through 2600 Films, Goldstein produced Freedom Downtime, a feature-length documentary about famed hacker Kevin Mitnick, the Free Kevin movement and the hacker world.

Mark ‘Phiber Optik’ Abene is one of America’s most notorious computer hackers. A former member of LOD (Legion of Doom), his later change of affiliation to rival group MOD (Masters of Deception) led to the beginning of the Great Hacker War in the early 1990s. A legendary figure in the hack/phreak scene, his unexpectedly harsh 12 months jail sentence by US courts in 1992 was unprecedented and widely condemned by the hacker community.
