Kuala Lumpur, 14th August, 2007 – Siemens Malaysia and Intel Malaysia today announced a collaboration to develop BloodBank Manager, a valuable innovation involving blood bank management within the healthcare sector in Malaysia. BloodBank Manager is a Made-In-Malaysia product which offers the use of management-enhancing Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) technology, to hospitals across the nation. Patients in hospitals equipped with BloodBank Manager can rest assured that there will be no mix-ups with transfusion and other blood based treatments.
“RFID is constantly creating new opportunities for innovative applications involving the use of the latest computer technologies and healthcare. Siemens Malaysia and Intel Malaysia have joined forces to develop BloodBank Manager based on an extensive observation of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as well as clinical processes involving blood transfusion units and blood centres across Malaysia,” said Tan Sri Rainer Althoff, President & CEO of Siemens Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
This new platform using RFID technology will deliver a complete solution for the lifecycle of blood products to meet robust quality requirements for patient safety, in the healthcare industry today,” added Tan Sri Rainer Althoff.
“With today’s constant increase in demand for quality medical services, it is a requirement that medical products and IT solutions support clinical processes, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures,” said Mr. Atul Bhargava, Managing Director, Intel MSC Sdn Bhd.
“BloodBank Manager combines Intel’s 35 years of technology leadership in Malaysia with Siemens’ 128 years of experience in manufacturing electro-medical and physical apparatus. We are working together to develop an innovative RFID product that will improve overall blood bank management in Malaysia,” said Mr. Atul Bhargava.
BloodBank Manager will ensure transparency and accountability through the logging, labeling and tracking of blood products. It will utilize RFID technology to enable the efficient handling of blood bags by improving identification, cross matching, inventory, logistics, lab system interfaces and introduce intelligent analytics to the process of blood bank management. It will reduce clinical errors associated with handling blood products and minimize waste by tracking expiry dates and storage conditions.
BloodBank Manager will simplify the registration and recording of screening results, during the blood donation process. The Smart Cabinet for storage of blood bags works with the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) enabling the smooth and seamless management of requests for cross matching, collection and return. Stock can be maintained, patient profiles can be created and reports can be generated for inventory stock-take, donation, transaction history and donor/patient profiles.
The system reduces waiting times, errors and mismatches and improves the efficiency of internal processes to ensure the ‘Five Rights[1]’are maintained at all times. In a nutshell, BloodBank Manager delivers optimal use of blood products whilst ensuring the safety of patients.
BloodBank Manager is already a part of Enterprise RFID solutions for Healthcare with Intelligent Pharmacy, Patient Identification, Infant Protection, Laundry Tracking, Surgical Instruments, Bed Tracking, Intelligent Blood Supply, Equipments and Asset Tracking, Safety Verification and Medical Documents in place.
