Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) launched its new offering called e-Storage, a subscription-based online storage and backup service targeted at consumers and businesses; who wish to have an offsite data storage and backup facility that they can access from anywhere with an Internet connection.

A signing ceremony was held recently at Menara TM to mark the partnership between TM Net Sdn Bhd and its partner for the e-Storage service - After Office.Com Sdn Bhd. TM Net was represented by Zainab Hashim, its acting Chief Executive Officer and Haji Azmir Khairuddin, Assistant General Manager for e-Commerce, Application and Hosting Services whilst, After Office.Com was represented by its Chairman, Abdul Majid Abdullah and Ng Shou Jen, Acting Chief Executive Officer.

Unlike the various free online storage services available on the Internet, e-Storage brings peace-of-mind value propositions that include secure login and access via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and 24x7 customer support through telephone, email and online chat. It also provides faster access speeds as the data transfers involve domestic Internet traffic only.

“It pays to have an online storage and backup for your important data but at the same time we need to be cautious about who your provider is and where the data resides,” said Zainab.

“With e-Storage, customers would not have this concern. All customer data is housed at our data centre in Cyberjaya, which complies with the Information Security Management System standards BS7799 certification and ISO 27001 standards. Therefore customers can be assured of high performance throughputs through local Internet access links when accessing their data,” she added.

“This means that the data transfer rate will be faster as customers are accessing their data, which is hosted locally as opposed to the free ones hosted overseas”, she added.

e-Storage is a service where files, folders or the entire content of a customer’s hard drive can be regularly backed up to a Tier-One data centre via an Internet connection. The service is available to any Streamyx and ‘Dial-up’ 1515 customers, whose computer is connected to the Internet, with minor configurations done through a familiar Web browser-based interface or “StorageSync”, a software client dedicated for auto synchronization between the desktop files and storage server.

With an Internet connection and an encrypted and password-protected Web browser interface, the remotely hosted files and folders appear as if they are stored on an external local hard drive. This is particularly useful for backing up files; in the scenario where the original copy becomes corrupted or is accidentally deleted. The service is beneficial to home users as well, because the online storage and backup service can be used for important personal documents, photos, music or video.

“The rationale behind this subscription-based online backup is simple: to eliminate the risk of catastrophic data loss due to any unforeseen disasters. This is unlike other available free online storage service, where the customer cannot rely on a guaranteed level of service and the provider is not liable for data loss,” said Abdul Majid. “Free online storage has its benefits for storing less important data, but when it comes to sensitive and important data, we believe our Internet-savvy users will be interested in a reliable online storage service at this minimal cost.”

Pricing and Packages
There are two types of service available: personal online storage starts at 500MB or 1GB and enterprise online storage at 1GB. Both the personal and enterprise online storage packages comes with the Private folder option; however, only the enterprise package has the additional ‘Company Share’ folder, which allows other members of the company to share
files and data – making the service a convenient central data repository for shared business data.

The monthly subscription fee is RM1 for Streamyx home users for a personal online storage space of 500MB and RM 2 for the space of 1GB. For business subscribers, the monthly subscription fee is RM4 per month for 1GB of online storage with three user ID accounts.

To promote the introduction of this service, existing ‘Dial-up’ 1515 and Streamyx customers are entitled to a 30-day FREE trial of e-Storage. Customers can choose to activate the online storage trial anytime , after which if it is not subscribed to, the trial account will be cancelled and all residing data will be deleted. Customers can also subscribe to the e-Storage service through TM’s self-care portal anytime they want.
