AMD CONTINUES EXPANSION PLANS IN MSC MALAYSIA

Strong support from the Malaysian Government exhibited in the financial and accountancy (F&A) sector was key factor to the global semi-conductor leader’s expansion plans

PALO ALTO — 22 OCTOBER 2008 (WEDNESDAY) — Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a leading innovator in semiconductor design and manufacturing, has said that strong support from the Malaysian Government in the financial and accountancy (F&A) sector has been a key factor for their decision to continue their expansion plans in Malaysia.

AMD, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California received the MSC Malaysia Status at the MSC Malaysia – Forbes Networking and Panel Discussion joint event, held here at the Stanford Park Hotel. Niran Noor, the Vice President of Marketing and Branding Division of Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) presented the MSC Malaysia Status certificate to Devinder Kumar, Senior Vice President Finance and Corporate Controller, AMD, witnessed by Datuk Dr. Maximus Ongkili, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Malaysia

AMD’s local entity in Malaysia, Advanced Micro Devices Global Services (M) Sdn Bhd (AMD GSM), has been designated to provide Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) services within the AMD group globally, which are supported under AMD GSM’s parent company, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. The operations in Malaysia will serve the Asia Region, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and the Americas region.

Datuk Dr. Maximus Ongkili said "The shared services and outsourcing sector (SSO) remains to be a key growth area for MSC Malaysia. We have seen significant growth over the last few years in this area. In 2007, revenue generated from SSO companies in MSC Malaysia grew by 67 percent to USD1.62 billion."

Currently, with over 200 Malaysian knowledge workers, AMD GSM is providing services for AMD globally in Finance and Accounting (F&A), Human Resources (HR), Sales Operations, Information Technology (IT), Procurement and Taxation. This is done in seven different languages, including English, Chinese, Tamil and German.

”Since 1972 when AMD first established operations in Penang, we have gained greater confidence and experience in Malaysia’s capability to serve the global market. Strong government support, availability of a skilled workforce and a customer service mindset have encouraged AMD to grow its operations in Malaysia,” said Devinder Kumar. “The growth of the Financial and Accounting services sector, coupled with good infrastructure has also influenced our decision.”

Datuk Dr. Maximus added that in 2007, Malaysia also witnessed, a 42 percent growth in the number of jobs created for SSO in MSC Malaysia, bringing the total number to 32,500.

The establishment of AMD’s global services center in MSC Malaysia represents a trend among companies who have long established operations in Malaysia through manufacturing, banking or other sectors. In the past few years, companies such as Dell, Intel, Shell and DHL have moved up the value chain by establishing a regional or global shared services center here, delivering superior value from Malaysia. On the 8th of October, Palo Alto based Hewlett Packet (HP) unveiled a 24 hectare global campus plan, which is predicted to create 4,000 high value jobs in Malaysia over the next 10 years.

“MSC Malaysia is committed to deliver the best of people, cost and environment… and continue to see the value in Malaysia as a preferred global ICT location,” commented Niran.
