The event also witnessed the signing ceremony between SLW Corporation Sdn Bhd (also a member of the SLW Group of Companies) and EADS Secure Networks to be the Value Added Reseller in Malaysia. The event was witnessed by Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim, the Minister of Information, Communications, Arts and Culture.

Segi Maju is the licence holder to provide the digital trunked radio service, whereas SLW Corporation Sdn Bhd is the system integrator of this system utilising the TETRA system infrastructure supplied by EADS Secure Networks.

With the implementation of this digital trunked radio service, customers will now have clear despatch trunked radio voice communication without compromising on security or privacy and will also have connectivity where network or applications can be implemented with IP connectivity. Other than the improved group voice communications, it also allows the mobile customers in transportation, construction, shipping, security and other industries to communicate instantly with staff via data services such as status, short data service (SDS) calls to telephones and mobile phones and also allows them to have access to the Internet.

Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim, the Minister of Information, Communications, Arts and Culture said, “The government applauds steps taken by companies like Segi Maju Consortium, SLW Corporation and EADS Secure Networks who have seen the importance for an efficient digital trunked radio service and at the same time moving the telecommunication industry to a more advanced plateau.”

To date, SLW Group has invested more than RM5 million to embark on bringing this new open standard digital system that supports any manufacturer’s terminal equipment to Malaysia. The system will be implemented in stages over a period of five years beginning from the locations where their current users have an apparent need to migrate.

Other areas of investment by SLW Group will be infrastructures for in-building coverage in high-rise buildings or car parks, industrial projects for airports, seaports and gas complexes, and also test equipment and spares to locally support the system.
Encik Azizan Abdul Razak, Director of Segi Maju Consortium Sdn Bhd and SLW Corporation Sdn Bhd said, “In a world where technology is continuously evolving, we see radio communication moving towards Digital technology whereby TETRA is the leading global standard approved by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for digital trunked radio. Most of the leading manufacturers have introduced their digital radios into the Malaysian market. After having invested time and resources, we are now launching the digital trunked radio service in the country.

“I believe that EADS’ TETRA system and SLW’s technical expertise is the right solution to ensure the successful nationwide implementation and deployment of the digital trunked radio network.”

EADS TETRA, the solution adopted, is one of the world’s most advanced security systems. In addition to superior coverage, the solution will also ensure secure network operations, security for the organisations that share the network as well as terminal security.

“We are pleased to partner with SLW Corporation as our value added reseller to provide Segi Maju Consortium a new, digital trunked radio communications platform. We will provide our best team to support them in ensuring the successful implementation and rollout,” said Mr François Bégaud, Chief Executive Officer of EADS Secure Networks for the Asia Pacific Region.

Digital trunked radio service caters to a niche audience; to support its customers, Segi Maju Consortium is looking at investing another RM15 million over the next five years to upgrade the current infrastructure.
