MDeC to host Inaugural Asian Animation Summit in December 2012

Three regional agencies collaborate to accelerate growth of animation for children’s
television and film

KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 1, 2012 – Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) in collaboration with ABC Australia supported by Screen Australia and Korea Creative Content Agency, will be hosting the inaugural Asian Animation Summit (AAS), an initiative to promote the co-production and co-financing of animation for children’s television and film within the Asian region, held in Kuala Lumpur from 10 to 12 December 2012.

A total of ten projects from each participating country will be pitched during the AAS to an international panel of advisors. The event will provide a platform for animation producers to present two types of projects to potential co-producers, broadcasters and distributors; partially-financed projects seeking production finance, and projects in development seeking market feedback and financing interest. The first of its kind in Kuala Lumpur, the AAS will be attended by regional and international broadcasters and producers including from markets such as Europe and North America.

“MDeC is proud to host the inaugural Asian Animation Summit 2012. Beyond convening to exchange ideas and technical knowledge, the AAS is an ideal opportunity for our regional producers to build international relationships that will enable them to initiate joint content development, co-production and funding,” says Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, Chief Executive Officer of MDeC.

“The Asian Animation Summit acts as a channel for all creative players from the children’s animation industry in all capacities. It is particularly valuable to new animators as it provides them with opportunities for mentorship which will subsequently enhance their knowledge and skillset. We look forward to working together with our partner organisations in Australia and South Korea to bring AAS to Malaysia. Through this platform, and the valuable prospects and growth opportunities that this event will bring, the Malaysian creative industry will continue to help raise the government’s goal of making Malaysia a leading creative content hub,” said Kamil Othman, Vice President, Creative Multimedia, Multimedia Development Corporation.
