Petaling Jaya, March 21, 2013 - The need for protection against unwanted correspondence and malware is now obvious to the vast majority of companies. Based on data collected by Kaspersky Lab and the analytical agency B2B International in November 2012, 82% of companies across the globe have implemented anti-malware protection, while 80% use anti-spam technologies. However, given that cybercriminals are using increasingly sophisticated techniques to steal information, additional protection tools are necessary.
The scope of contemporary cybercriminal activity is truly impressive: Kaspersky Lab experts detect an average of 200,000 new malicious programs every day, and 72% of all email messages are spam. This means that solutions offering protection against these threats are essential, and it comes as no surprise that over 80% of companies have adopted them.
At the same time, it should be noted that cybercriminals are increasingly counting on the quality of their malware rather than quantity. In 2012, large companies faced attempts to conduct targeted attacks on their IT infrastructure. In such attacks, highly skilled cybercriminals use all the methods available, including social-engineering techniques and exploits targeting as yet unknown (zero-day) vulnerabilities. Many of these tools are also used in sophisticated mass attacks on home users and companies.
Traditional antivirus technologies are not designed to provide protection against complex malware and, hence, targeted attacks. The required level of security can be achieved only by using additional protection technologies (encryption) , Automatic Exploit Prevention , System Watcher , script emulator etc.) and by restricting activities that are not directly related to the employee’s work (control of access to the corporate network, devices, applications and the Internet).
However, the findings of the study conducted by B2B International are not reassuring: only a little over a third of those surveyed encrypt corporate data, only 43% use systems that detect attacks on IT infrastructure (IPS/IDS), while 15% are not aware that such systems exist or are not interested in using them. Fewer than half of the companies surveyed control the use of external devices or third-party applications, and only 55% use NAC technology.
At the same time, there is one positive trend: about a fifth of the companies surveyed are planning to implement one or more of the above technologies this year. These companies might want to look at Kaspersky Lab’s integrated corporate solution – the Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business platform, which includes the most advanced technologies and tools providing protection against cyber-threats.
