Mr. Goh Chee Hoh, Managing Director, SEA Region, Trend Micro Inc.

Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global cloud security leader, applauds the government on the announcement of the Budget 2014 themed Strengthening Economic Resilience, Accelerating Transformation & Fulfilling Promises.

Budget 2014 certainly demonstrates a holistic approach in addressing the current challenging economic situation. We are currently living in the Digital era where the Internet is vital in our daily lives. In line with the tabling of Budget 2014, the government has implemented the High-Speed Broadband (HSBB) project under the National Broadband Initiative. With the objective to expand the Internet access in major towns, the government will implement the second phase of HSBB in collaboration with the private sector involving RM1.8bil investment. With this, it is expected to provide more coverage in urban areas, benefiting 2.8 million households with increased Internet speed to 10 Mbps.

In addition, the government will continue to strive for excellence in education via ICT by expanding Internet access in schools especially in rural areas with an allocation of RM168 million.

These announcements will increase the number of Internet users and boost the adoption rate for smart devices such as tablets, smartphones, laptops, phablets as well as Personal Computer (PC) amongst the consumers and businesses especially in the current inevitable movement of the ‘consumerisation of IT or the Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD) trend.

With the increase of Internet users we do foresee the need of Internet security, etiquette and stay vigilant not falling prey to the cyber criminals.  Malaysians are reminded to have appropriate preventive steps and ensure that they have an all-in-one security solution to stay ahead of the potential cyber threats. In addition to that, corporations will also need to include measures to have threat management solutions and Internet security solutions to keep abreast with the increased usage of mobile devices within their organization resulting in elasticity of their business perimeters as well as adhering to the Private Data Protection Act (PDPA).
