Following the news that Alcatel-Lucent has launched the Metro Cell Express Site Certification Program, Daryl Schoolar, principal analyst at Ovum provides his view on this major initiative:
“Mobile network operators want to provide better coverage to their customers through an affordable network investment. Metro small cells are a critical part of the plan, but mobile operators face challenges in how to actually deploy them in a timely, efficient, and profitable manner. Alcatel-Lucent’s just announced Metro Cell Express Certification program aims to make small cell deployments easier for mobile operators. The certification program provides mobile operators with a database of ALU qualified small cell site locations, system installers, and backhaul solutions.
“Obviously Alcatel-Lucent wants to sell more small cells, so anything it can do to accelerate small deployments is to its benefit. By making the process of deploying small cells easier and faster by identifying needed resources ALU should help accelerate the markets growth and give it a point of differentiation. This is the goal of the certification database. By ALU creating a resource where mobile operators can find resources needed for a small cell deployments mobile operators won’t have to go out and do this completely on their own. This should save time on when it comes to installing small cells. If the vendors in the database are able spread some of the cost of say backhaul or site rental among multiple operators, mobile operators might also see a cost savings as well. Ovum has yet to see any other small cell vendor, at least publicly, commit to easing small cell deployment challenges at the level of ALU and its certification program.
“Of course the obstacle here for ALU is scaling the program. As it was launched today, Cell Express Certification only gives access to 100,000 sites to operators in the US and Western Europe. This is a good start, but ALU will definitely need to add more geographic coverage and exponentially increase the number of sites. While being able to provide access to every site needed through the certification program is obviously unrealistic, ALU must be able to cover a significant portion of the needed sites via its certification program for it to be successful. As Ovum has pointed out in past research, small cells are key to ALU’s overall future success and Metro Cell Express Certification is obviously something the vendor sees as key to its small cell success.”

ZTE slips by Alcatel-Lucent in global ON market; top two slots now held by Chinese vendors. 100G passes $1bn, but overall market remains sluggish
London, 29 May 2013 – Ovum’s analysis of 1Q13 results in the $14.5bn global optical networking (ON) market has highlighted several key shifts. First, ZTE overtook Alcatel-Lucent to grab the number two spot; for the first time, Chinese vendors hold the top two ranks in optical networking. Second, growth in 100G remains a bright spot as annualized revenues exceeded $1bn for the first time ever. Third, market growth overall remains difficult, challenging equipment vendors; only Fujitsu posted sequential and year-over-year gains.
“While it is not uncommon for the market to decline going into the first calendar quarter, the decline is worrisome as this is the fifth straight time the market has declined versus the prior year's quarter, and quarterly revenues are the lowest they’ve been in six years,” says Ron Kline, network infrastructure analyst at Ovum. “On the bright side, 100G continued to show strong growth both sequentially and year over year. 100G port shipments in 1Q13 grew 41% and revenues grew 24% versus 4Q12, with annualized revenues surpassing $1bn for the first time. Twenty vendors shipped 100G for revenue in 1Q13 and more are slated to enter the market throughout the year. Guidance from vendors is cautiously optimistic, with good short-term visibility into order growth; long-term visibility remains cloudy.”
In a new market share analysis*, the global industry analysts verify that besides 100G, sales of next-gen converged packet-optical gear, including OTN switching gear, is up compared to the year-ago quarter, although annualized sales of 40G gear declined for the first time, indicating perhaps that the 40G market is starting to slow as vendors price 100G aggressively. From a regional perspective, Ovum reveals that spending compared to the year-ago quarter dropped in Asia-Pacific and EMEA, remained flat in North America, and grew 15% in South & Central America.
The global industry analysts believe the current downturn is being driven by a quickening in the shift in spending to non-IP/Ethernet aggregation equipment, faltering economic growth in Europe, and lower pricing due to intense vendor competition.
“The 1Q13 global ON revenue results are consistent with our most recent annual forecast published in April 2013. Ovum is projecting the optical networks market will exceed US$17.1bn by 2018, for a 2.7% CAGR from 2012. We project that all ON market regions will resume growth in 2013 as carriers who exercised fiscal caution and deferred spending in 2012 restart their plans. Growth of IP, video, mobile data, and data center expansions occurring in urban and more remote areas will be an ongoing catalyst for network footprint extension and capacity growth. Submarine network footprint and capacity will also expand in 2013,” concludes Kline.

Bell Labs lays the foundations for the future of optical communications
As 100G becomes the industry’s networking standard, Bell Labs continues to push the boundaries of optical communications in preparation for the coming ‘Petabit Era’
Murray Hill, New Jersey, February 5, 2013 – Bell Labs, the research organization within Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has laid the foundation for the future of ultra-high-capacity optical communication networks with the publication of the results of ground breaking experiments in optical technology.
Optical communication networks are the foundation of global communications today, and are essential to delivering unlimited video services, high-speed Internet access and social networking services to consumers and businesses. They are also responsible for transporting huge volumes of data on behalf of governments, corporations, banks and educational institutions. Optical networks carry the lifeblood of the information economy.
In recent papers published at leading industry conferences, Bell Labs has highlighted the achievement of optical transmission rates of 1 Terabit per-second per-wavelength channel, ushering in the potential for widespread use of Terabit interfaces in communications networks. This achievement heralds the era of Petabit-level data transmissions; a Petabit is equal to 1000 Terabits, and roughly the equivalent of sending 10,000 hour-long, high-definition videos over the network in one second.
The papers from Bell Labs also highlighted the ability to increase fiber capacities far beyond the capabilities of today’s wavelength-division multiplexed WDM systems. These achievements underscore Bell Labs’ technical and scientific leadership in fiber-optic communications.
As demand for higher data rates in service providers’ networks has continued to increase, Alcatel-Lucent has been at the forefront of driving innovation in optical transmission technologies to enable operators to meet this demand. In 2010 the company introduced a single-carrier 100 Gigabit per second transmission platform, and at the 2012 Optical Fiber Communications conference, Alcatel-Lucent announced its second-generation Photonic Service Engine (PSE) electro-optical chip, which supports per-channel data rates of 400 Gigabits per second (400G) to address longer-range requirements.
Building on these breakthroughs, Bell Labs has now reduced the number of subcarriers required to transport a Terabit of information per second on an optical channel, paving the way towards viable Terabit optical interface technologies. These world leading transmission records include:
-) 8-subcarrier Tb superchannel; 5600 km at 5.7 b/s/Hz [Xiang Liu et al., ECOC 2012]
-) 4-subcarrier Tb superchannel; 2400 km at 5.0 b/s/Hz [Jeremie Renaudier et al., OFC 2012]
-) 2-subcarrier Tb superchannel; 3200 km at 5.2 b/s/Hz [Greg Raybon et al., IPC 2012]
The latter of these demonstrations features a tenfold improvement over 100G solutions offered elsewhere within the marketplace, achieving a Terabit-per-second with merely two optical subcarriers over longhaul distances.
In September 2012 Bell Labs presented to delegates at the European Conference & Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC) in Amsterdam four post-deadline papers on topics at the forefront of optical research, including one on space-division multiplexing (SDM), a revolutionary technique pioneered at Bell Labs to scale optical network bandwidths to Petabits per second and beyond. Here, Bell Labs showed a six-mode Erbium-doped fiber amplifier that is able to simultaneously amplify all the six spatial modes of a matched few-mode fiber. This amplifier is a necessary and key element for the viability of a full SDM system, and Bell Labs was able to demonstrate for the first time an amplification gain for a record six spatial modes simultaneously.
In a follow-up paper presented at the Optical Society of America’s Annual Meeting in Rochester, New York, Bell Labs extended its previous three-mode SDM transmission records to demonstrate transmission across six modes using full 12 x 12 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) digital signal processing.
Peter Winzer, Director of Optical Transmission Systems and Networks Research from Bell Labs, said: “Bell Labs is the industry’s driving force for optical communications research, impacting the networks of tomorrow and making advancements for today. Our contributions are helping optical networks cope with the never ending increase in communications traffic and as such enable the economically sustainable growth of modern applications and services. While some of this technology is years away from implementation, creating and developing it now paves the way for a bright, information-rich, and globally connected future.”

Smartphone RM200 Rebate for Youth and RM1,000 Grant for Online Entrepreneurs to Start on 1 January 2013: MCMC
Cyberjaya: 27 December, 2012 --- Youths aged 21 to 30 will be able to start applying for the RM200 rebate off selected 3G smartphones from celco nominated registered dealers. Applications for the Youth Communication Package (YCP) (or Pakej Komunikasi Belia (PKB)), under the National Broadband Initiative; can be made by registering online at http://nbi.skmm.gov.my/ starting from 1 January 2013. The scheme is on a first-come-first served basis and will be for the first 1.5 million eligible youths who may claim their smartphones while stocks last.
Whilst the Youth Communication Package is a scheme implemented by the celcos, this initiative, coordinated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), was announced by the Prime Minister as part of Budget 2013 tabled in September this year to encourage more youths especially those in rural areas to enjoy the nation’s broadband facilities.
Youths who qualify for the RM200 rebate will be able to purchase 'selected' 3G smartphones costing up to RM500 from selected dealers and agents appointed by service providers. With the rebate, they are expected to pay no more than RM300 to own a new 3G smartphone.
“The idea is to spread the incentive across to those who do not yet use smartphones. We really want to help those who cannot afford to change phones to upgrade from their old 2G phones to a basic 3G smartphone. Those who can afford phones priced above RM500 are really not in the intended category or target market. Some of those phones can reach prices of over RM2,500 without contract. A RM200 rebate does not even make a dent but if the phone is priced at RM500, a RM200 rebate goes a long way. Again, the target is the lower income group and the youths,” said MCMC Chairman, Dato’ Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi, in refuting speculations that the RM500 price limit was low.
He added, "from studies conducted by MCMC, over 90% of users are in the prepaid segment. Celcos don't provide smartphone incentives in this segment, they only give mobile phone 'incentives' for postpaid contracts."
Additionally, as to the criticism on the phones out there, there are over 20 models of branded phones which are 3G enabled unlike the allegations made by certain quarters. (Please refer to the following list of smartphones available for this package.)
The participating celcos and mobile virtual network operator (MVNOs) will offer no less than five (5) and perhaps up to 10 or 12 models under the initiative via their dealership outlets. Members of the public should look out for the "Pakej Komunikasi Belia" logo that will be displayed on banners and buntings at these outlets. They should also check websites of the service providers for the list of smartphones and participating dealership outlets.
Meanwhile, owners of small online businesses between the ages of 18 and 65 will be able to start applying for the Get Malaysian Business Online (GMBO) RM1,000 grant starting on 1 January 2013 also by registering online at http://nbi.skmm.gov.my/. Small online business entrepreneurs who have registered websites for example, .com.my, .my, and fulfilled all the terms and conditions, will receive RM1,000 grant from MCMC. The money will be credited directly into the successful applicants’ local bank account. It is expected that up to a maximum of 50,000 eligible entrepreneurs of small online businesses will apply for the grant.
For more details on these two programmes, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) are posted online in the MCMC website.
The list (in alphabetical order) of smartphones that will be offered are as follows:
1) Alcatel 993D
2) Alcatel OneTouch Glory 2
3) Alcatel OneTouch Inspire 2
4) The Buzz Phone
5) HTC Wildfire
6) Huawei Ideos X3
7) LG Optimus L3
8) Ninetology Black Pearl II
9) Ninetology Palette
10) Nokia 2730

How the tablet generation is pushing networks to the edge: research from Alcatel-Lucent’s Bell Labs shows impact of surging video consumption
By 2020 people will be watching seven hours of video each day versus 4.8 hours today, with a dramatic shift from broadcasting to on-demand video viewing
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, December 14, 2012 – With Christmas expected to bring another leap in ownership of tablets, smartphones and other devices, new research from Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) suggests that increasing consumption of video content on such devices will push the wired broadband networks that carry this traffic to their absolute limits over the next decade.
• Bell Labs projections suggest that, by 2020, consumers in the United States alone will access seven hours of video each day – as opposed to 4.8 hours today, and will increasingly consume this additional video on tablets, both at home and on the go.
• Significantly, the research also points to a dramatic shift in viewing habits, as consumers switch from broadcast content to video-on-demand services, which will grow to 70% of daily consumption compared with 33% today.
• The projections also suggest a twelve times increase in internet video content as cloud services, news sites and social networking applications become more video based, and continuously accessible anywhere, anytime on tablets.
Importantly, the study also highlighted how these trends will stretch the capabilities the residential broadband networks many service providers use today: as the delivery of video content rapidly moves from traditional broadcast TV to the ‘unicast’ delivery of personalized content to individuals, disproportionate pressure will be placed on the ‘‘IP edge’ of these networks. The IP – or Internet Protocol - edge is the part of the network where most of the intelligence is needed to deliver sophisticated video and high-speed Internet services is located. Broadcast is a much more efficient way of delivering video services, so the move to unicast creates enormous bandwidth demands on networks.
Marcus Weldon, Chief Technology Officer, Alcatel-Lucent, said: “Delivery of video from the cloud and from content delivery networks to tablets, TVs and smartphones - with guaranteed quality -, presents an exciting new revenue opportunity for communications service providers, but only if they are prepared to take advantage of it. Left unmanaged, the rapid growth in video traffic can turn into a deluge and spell disaster. It is important to look at where service providers’ investments can have the most impact, and this research makes clear that the IP edge of both wireline and wireless networks – which are increasingly becoming one and the same - offers the greatest opportunity to improve network performance. At the same time, it also presents the greatest source of risk if not managed appropriately.”
Bell Labs found that on-demand video services, such as high definition premium movie services as well as video sharing sites, will become even more popular over the next five years. As a result, on-demand video will command an increased share of viewing hours, causing peak-hour traffic at the ‘edge’ of new IP-based networks to grow 2.5 times faster than the amount of traffic on the broadband connections reaching households. This challenge will need to be addressed, comprehensively, if communications service providers are to maintain their ability to deliver high-quality residential multimedia services to consumers.
Specific Findings
The study compared data about video usage and growth from 2012 to 2020 in ‘triple-play’ (video, data and voice) communications service providers, and identified the following trends:
• The total time spent watching video will grow from 4.8 hours to seven hours per-user, per-day. Much of this contribution will come from the latest generation of consumers who are more likely to multi-task – such as watching television while conducting a video call on their tablet - resulting in seven hours worth of video consumed in as little as five hours.
• The proportion of time spent watching managed video-on-demand services and web-based video (also known as over-the-top - ‘OTT’ - providers) will grow from 33% to 77%. This will come at the expense of traditional broadcast TV services, whose relative share of time will drop from 66% to 10%.
• Internet-based video consumption each year will grow twelvefold, from 90 Exabytes to 1.1 Zettabyes.
• Consumption of managed video-on-demand from services providers versus OTTs is expected grow at 28 percent annual rate, from 44 Exabytes to 244 Exabytes.
• 10.5% of managed video consumption and 8.5% of OTT video consumption will occur at the peak hour, 8:00 p.m.

Alcatel-Lucent delivers year of technology breakthroughs
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June 27, 2012 - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has signalled its continued commitment to technology innovation following a 12-month period of major product launches at the global telecommunications group.
Publishing its annual review, Alcatel-Lucent highlighted new technologies that it had developed to meet consumer demand for high-speed communications on any device, at any time, on any network.
Major investment in research and development, led by Bell Labs’ research, forms a core part of Alcatel-Lucent’s business strategy as the company expands its product offerings, geographic reach and service capabilities for network operators and internet service providers.
The year has been defined by a focus on building the foundations of a new digital economy based on new radio technology, high speed optics and fast data processing. More people, across more countries want to do more online, we are providing them the tools to do so.
Four highlights from the year are:
1. lightRadio – The race for bandwidth continues unabated. More people want more access to high speed mobile communications. Existing networks are having difficulty meeting the demand. New networks mean more antennas using more power. In 2011 Alcatel-Lucent launched lightRadio which is a solution to the problem. It is a cube that is lighter than a drinks can and not much bigger, reduces network power consumption by 51% and can be deployed in locations that previously did not have mobile coverage.
2. CloudBand – We have developed CloudBand to connect the network to the cloud. Cloud computing is now available to network companies, not just a couple of high profile app developers. CloudBand is a technology that gives service providers the ability to offer cloud computing to retail and consumer customers. It is the foundation for a new class of ‘carrier-cloud’ services.
3. Smart grids – As the summer months bring warm temperatures to the Northern Hemisphere, aging power grids and rising demand, leads power utilities to transform the way they do business. To enable this transformation, power utilities are taking a closer look at a different kind of power — the power of their communications network to enable the smart grid and its real-time applications. Learn more about how Alcatel-Lucent has worked with Canadian utility AltaLink to move all mission-critical communications onto wide-area networks, thereby taking advantage of reliable digital features and functionality.
4. OpenTouch – The OpenTouch suite of communications platforms allows companies to embrace multimedia and multi-party communications. Where once companies relied on telephones and one-to-one meetings, OpenTouch means they can now incorporate new tools to ensure the most efficient working practices.
Ben Verwaayen, Chief Executive of Alcatel Lucent, said: “Our customers want to provide the best communications solutions to consumers and businesses. It is our job to keep innovating to ensure they are able to do so. These technologies are examples of how in 2011 we helped our clients to deliver the very best communications. Whether assisting emergency services, or providing mobile access to areas previously in service dead-zones, the last year has seen Alcatel-Lucent make significant progress.”

Two-thirds of IT decision makers see guaranteed cloud performance as critical for essential operations according to research from Alcatel-Lucent
Concerns about outages top the list of inhibitors to cloud adoption; communications service providers are seen as being the most credible and reliable providers of cloud services
Kuala Lumpur, June 5, 2012 – Primary research conducted by Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) reveals that performance concerns (stability, response time, end-to-end availability) are the biggest inhibitors to adoption of cloud services by enterprises. Information technology (IT) decision makers identified performance as the most important aspect of cloud solutions needing improvement. Other top concerns cited are security, cost and ease of use. At stake is the global cloud services market forecasted to grow to $177 billion by 2015.
The recent market study was conducted with 3,886 IT decision makers at medium- and large-sized multinational technology firms in seven countries, including the U.S., U.K., France, India, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
While the study reveals rapid adoption of cloud services by major enterprises across a variety of market sectors, it also points to shortcomings in today’s public cloud services, led by risks related to availability and quality of service.
• Two thirds of IT decision makers don’t use the cloud for their essential business applications for fear of service outages
• 46 percent of those surveyed find current cloud service system delays unacceptable
• One in four complained that there’s no simple resolution path when service level agreements (SLAs) are not met
• Two out of five IT decision makers reported either frequent or lengthy service outages
The reluctance to embrace the cloud was highest in finance, insurance, healthcare and government sectors – these are industries where performance and security are essential requirements for applications and services.
Nonetheless, 44 percent of the IT departments surveyed are optimistic that the weaknesses in today’s cloud services will be resolved and expect to expand the use of cloud services over the next three years.
Dor Skuler, Alcatel-Lucent Vice President of Cloud Solutions, said: “Not all clouds are created equal. A typical large enterprise supports between 250 and 750 IT applications, so before it decides to move them to the cloud it must be confident of a smooth migration. It needs to ensure that there are substantial efficiencies to be gained, risks to its operations are minimal, it is easy to use and that that cloud performance is guaranteed with service level agreements. Communications service providers can meet those expectations. By orchestrating and optimizing the assets within their networks and the network itself, they can meet the stringent cloud service delivery demands of consumers and businesses.”
Trust was cited as one of the most important purchasing factors for IT decision makers in all market sectors. The study found that the dominant network service providers generally fared better than Amazon and Google as a trusted source of cloud services.
Enterprises currently rely upon communications service providers for business communication services which are routinely backed up by guaranteed SLAs. Those established relationships and history of demonstrated performance put communications service providers in a prime position to improve the quality and reliability of enterprise cloud services.
The study revealed that IT decision makers in all regions are willing to pay for a next-generation, high-performance cloud solution. In fact, a carrier-grade cloud service is four times more attractive to IT decision makers and has the potential to generate ten times more revenue than existing cloud services. But to fully capitalize on this opportunity, service providers must offer an easy to use cloud solution that can support complex network configurations, VPN and other services, as well as guarantee bandwidth and speed of delivery.

Alcatel-Lucent urges Asian nations to close growing infrastructure gaps at World Economic Forum on East Asia 2012
Thailand’s US$2.6 billion ‘Smart Thailand’ strategy is an example of government commitment to building competitive digital economies
Bangkok, May 31, 2012 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), a leading global innovator in the field of networking and communications technology said by the end of the decade Asia will need to invest USD 1.1 trillion in its telecom infrastructure to compete in the digital economy. Alcatel-Lucent delivered the message at the World Economic Forum on East Asia 2012 in Bangkok.
Over the past five years, Asia has added 1.5 billion additional mobile subscribers. Yet still more than 25 percent of Asians live without basic mobile services. Over the next five years governments and business will need to add another 1.3 billion mobile subscribers to bridge the gap. What’s more, Asia’s networks will need to support growing traffic requirements and increasing population density in urban centres.
Urbanization in most Asian mega-cities is increasing at an unprecedented speed -- manifested by the largest mass migration in human history, which in turn is straining infrastructure, social services, schools, and the environment. National Broadband initiatives are required to support urban growth and connect rural locations to the global economy. Asia Pacific is home to 12 national broadband projects. They aim to make affordable high-speed broadband and wireless services universally accessible for people. Broadband connects people to the digital economy and makes things like banking, healthcare, education and commerce available.
The extent of national broadband projects varies. While Singapore and Malaysia are already providing world-class telecom services, a huge infrastructure gap exists between them and nations like Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. In Myanmar, for example, only 1.3% of the population currently subscribes to mobile voice services, compared to the neighbouring nations Laos (80%), Thailand (111%), and Malaysia (127%).
“Initiatives that combine socially relevant applications, network infrastructure, and affordable business models will provide 36% more GDP growth than a network only approach. To bridge the infrastructure gaps in Asia, smarter planning and cross sector collaboration are needed,” Mr. Rajeev Singh-Molares, President of the Asia-Pacific Region for Alcatel-Lucent and Chairman of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Information Communications Technology said.
According to Mr. Singh-Molares, “Building a strong digital infrastructure is an imperative for nations that want to compete in the digital economy. Thailand is a good example of a country with a broad approach.”
The Thai government has a US$2.6 billion ‘Smart Thailand’ strategy. The strategy combines a network build with a push to convert all 800 or so government services onto digital platforms, make its cities and provinces smarter, and put tablets in the hands of all its students. The network build is ambitious. It aims to change the number of Thais connected to a network from 33 percent today to 95 percent by 2020.
Alcatel-Lucent believes initiatives like Thailand’s are important to bridging the infrastructure gap that divides developed and developing nations in Asia. They are also important for ensuring more people – from rich to poor-- gain access to the opportunities a digital economy provides.

Maxis Berhad and Alcatel-Lucent unlock Malaysian e-book market by focusing on local language content and wide accessibility
KUALA LUMPUR, May 31, 2012 – With the help of Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext and NYSE: ALU), Maxis Berhad - Malaysia’s leading integrated communications service provider - has launched the country’s first integrated e-book service. In full support of the Malaysian government’s knowledge society program, Maxis Berhad will provide access to an extensive digital library with content in the various (local) languages, and accessible via a wide range of devices.
According to Juniper Research, worldwide mobile e-book sales will represent a market opportunity of $9.7 billion by 2016 (growing from $3.2 billion in 2011). At the same time, however, non-English speaking markets are underserved by the traditional players in this space: many e-readers are only available in a few countries and finding content in local languages typically is a challenge. Malaysia is a “textbook example” of this: a relatively small, multi-ethnic and multicultural society where many different languages are spoken.
Backing the government’s project to continue to develop Malaysia as a leading knowledge society, Maxis Berhad has engaged with Alcatel-Lucent to launch an extensive library of e-books – novels as well as scientific publications – that can easily be accessed via a wide range of devices including tablets, dedicated e-readers and PCs. Currently, the library includes approximately 300,000 international and local books. The total number is growing weekly.
The service runs on Alcatel-Lucent’s cloud-based Digital Media Store (DMS), enabling Maxis Berhad to launch their e-book offering quickly and with limited upfront capital investment. DMS also allows Maxis Berhad to provide recommendations in line with customers’ preferences - bringing consumer engagement to the next level.
T. Kugan, Maxis’ Vice President and Head of Product, Device, Innovation & Roaming: “Maxis has recognized the shift towards digital content and with the launch of Maxis e-books, we are looking at providing Malaysian readers with the hassle-free experience of browsing, purchasing and reading their favourite local and international books on their tablets or PCs. This will also provide local publishers, authors and educational institutions with a formidable platform that makes it possible for them to reach a larger audience.”
Mohd Fazlin Shah Mohd Salleh, President and Managing Director Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia: “This initiative underscores Maxis’ commitment to help Malaysia transform into a true knowledge society. Leveraging Alcatel-Lucent’s Digital Media Store solution, Maxis can deliver a variety of books - including novels and bestsellers, but also educational material - to subscribers across Malaysia.”

Alcatel-Lucent enables a faster, more efficient Internet
Kuala Lumpur, May 28, 2012 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), is to enter the $4bn-a-year market for Internet core routers, with breakthrough technologies that promise enhanced capacity and connectivity, improved energy consumption and dramatically lower costs for the world’s communication networks. To learn more read Alcatel-Lucent’s new product press release.
The international telecommunications group recently unveiled products that modernize the global backbone of the Internet to deal with the new era of video and cloud-based services. In a similar way to telephone exchanges controlling the flow of voice traffic and communications, Internet Protocol (IP) core routers control the flow of data and video traffic in metropolitan areas and cities, across national network backbones and in the global Internet.
Rapidly rising demand for online video and data is being driven by smartphones, tablets, connected TVs and other devices, and enabled by faster copper, fiber and wireless broadband access. These dynamics are forcing network operators to accelerate capacity upgrades in the core of their networks. At the same time, the emergence of cloud-based services and personalized content is driving the need for more flexibility in these networks to quickly adapt to the requirements of consumers and businesses.
Ben Verwaayen, Chief Executive of Alcatel-Lucent, said: “The new digital economy demands constant and rapid evolution of the networks that manage and deliver data traffic, connecting the hand of consumers with their content and applications in the cloud. Our market entry is the data equivalent of revolutionizing telephone exchanges. It will enable our customers to optimize the delivery of Internet video, gaming, photo sharing and data-hungry business applications.”
Speaking at Alcatel-Lucent’s annual technology symposium, Mr. Verwaayen said the new technologies had been pioneered by the company’s fast-growing IP division, which has already secured more than 25 percent of the market for service provider ‘edge routers’ – the systems that network operators deploy to manage broadband connections and service quality for residential and business users.
Alcatel-Lucent estimates its new products, which have taken more than three years to develop, will deliver a five-fold improvement in capacity and performance as well as energy savings of 66 percent compared with today’s typical IP core routers. Network operators currently spend an estimated $4bn a year* on IP core routers and the combined global energy consumption of core routers has been estimated by Bell Labs to exceed 1.8 Terawatts by 2016, the equivalent of 128,000 homes.
“For over a decade we have invested in advanced silicon and software technology, most recently demonstrated by our breakthrough network processor chipset, FP3, announced in June 2011. Now we are applying this technology to the largest nodes in the Internet, core routers.” said Basil Alwan, president of the company’s Internet Protocol division. “Our 7950 XRS core router systems sit at the massive intersections of the Internet, where billions of individual messages are directed to the correct destinations every second. Our technology will provide more capacity and more flexible traffic management with reduced energy consumption, helping to ensure better performance from global broadband networks.”
Operators welcome Alcatel-Lucent’s announcement
Major telecom operators, including BT, NTT Communications and Verizon today welcomed Alcatel-Lucent’s announcement and its potential to enhance the global Internet.
Karl Penaluna, President, BT Global Networks and Systems, said: “BT is constantly improving our network to deliver new and better broadband services to our consumer and business customers. We’ve been using Alcatel-Lucent’s 7750 Service Router for many years as part of the rollout of the 21CN program across the UK. As we deal with increasing traffic volumes and deliver the growth in cloud services from our data centers, we’ll need platforms for our national and metro core networks that scale to 100G links and beyond. We’re also constantly seeking to reduce our physical footprint and power per bit, so we’re very encouraged to see Alcatel-Lucent meeting these challenges with the 7950 XRS.”
Fumio Ito, Vice President Network Services Technology of NTT Communications, said: “The success of our broadband services worldwide is resulting in rapid traffic growth in our IP network. As we carry more traffic, we have to improve the power and space efficiency of our network infrastructure. We are pleased to see innovation from Alcatel-Lucent that brings enhancements to the IP network in terms that might be able to address our operational challenges and costs.”
Ihab Tarazi, Vice President of Global IP and Transport Planning and Technology at Verizon, said: “Verizon is experiencing tremendous growth in metro Ethernet services. Platforms such as the Alcatel-Lucent 7950 XRS will help us efficiently scale to support higher speeds and new capabilities while offering efficiency and flexibility. We applaud Alcatel-Lucent for its bold approach to router value and performance.”

Alcatel-Lucent Celebrates the Contribution of Women Employees
March 13, 2012 – Kuala Lumpur. More than 50 women employees from Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia gathered at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur recently to celebrate International Women’s Day. Among the various activities for the day, attendees also took the opportunity to share experiences about their careers, personal accomplishments and aspirations for the future.
Mohd Fazlin Shah Mohd Salleh, President and Managing Director for Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia, in his address to the attendees, acknowledged the significant contributions made by women employees and noted that the company is committed to support their career aspirations.
Dr Haniza Yon, Cluster Head and Research Director of Psychometrics Cluster, MIMOS Berhad was a guest speaker at the session. She spoke about her career as a psychometrician and about the experience of being a successful career woman in a field largely dominated by men.
Mohd Fazlin Shah Mohd Salleh, President and Managing Director, Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia.
“We recognize the achievements of the women in ALU, and we acknowledge the significant contributions you have made to the company. Each of you have made a difference in your own way. There is no “glass ceiling” in this organization and the sky’s the limit. Continue to challenge yourself and push for greater success in your career.”
Dr Haniza Yon, Research Director of Psychometrics Cluster, MIMOS.
“The definition of success is different for each woman. It is not always about having a bigger office, or a bigger pay cheque. One must know what one really wants and then go all out in order to achieve it. Women should feel confident that they can be as successful in their jobs as men. Recognition by employers is also a major factor in developing confidence in employees.
Hew Ling Chee, Network Design Division, Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia.
“Women leaders need to work harder as compared to men. I started as a junior network engineer in Alcatel-Lucent in 2006, and I was working with male leaders who were old enough to be my father! I worked hard and as time went by they came to respect and recognize my work. Alcatel-Lucent has given me the flexibility and the opportunity to learn and that’s why I have stayed here for 6 years.”
Pauline Goh, Senior Account Manager, Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia.
“As women, sometimes we can be very critical of other womenfolk. We should however be supportive and give other women an opportunity to be leaders. It is very important that we should have the confidence to take on bigger and greater roles. I believe that we should connect, communicate and network with our colleagues in order to grow and gain recognition within the organization.”

This is the third time Alcatel-Lucent has received the prestigious award which recognizes the exceptional growth that Alcatel-Lucent experienced in the area of NGN in 2006. The award was presented at the 2007 Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific ICT Awards banquet, held in Singapore. Alcatel-Lucent also received this award in 2004 and 2006.
The Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific ICT Awards are held annually to recognize companies and individuals that have pushed the boundaries of excellence — rising above the competition and demonstrating outstanding performance across the region. This year, 26 awards were conferred to some of Asia Pacific’s leading information and communications technology (ICT) companies.
Sin Siew Teyew, director of telecoms at Frost & Sullivan, said, “Alcatel-Lucent's positioning as the ‘network integrator’ in a converged IT and telecoms environment puts them at the forefront in providing end-to-end next-generation solutions that encompass the entire NGN transformation value chain of business transformation, network transformation and service transformation - otherwise known as NGN 2.0.”
Alcatel-Lucent offers a comprehensive set of solutions ideally positioned to help operators navigate the critical and complex transformation of their core networks providing a clear path to an intelligent, service-aware and converged environment. Alcatel-Lucent’s NGN portfolio helps fixed and mobile service providers control costs by enabling a staged migration from today’s circuit-based PSTN to a full packet-based network. With more than 245 fixed and mobile customers, including the delivery of new services to more than 55 million mobile subscribers, Alcatel-Lucent is engaged in more than 20 large transformation projects globally, including KPN, Telstra, AT&T, T-Mobile USA, and China Netcom.
“This award is a testimony to the leadership position that Alcatel-Lucent is taking in the NGN market,” said Frédéric Rose, President of Alcatel-Lucent Asia Pacific activities. “Alcatel-Lucent will continue to leverage this leadership to help our customers transform and introduce service innovation into their networks while cost-effectively migrating their installed customer base.”
All nominees were evaluated on a variety of actual market performance indicators for financial year 2006, including revenue growth, market share and growth in market share, leadership in product innovation, breadth of products and solutions, major customer acquisitions, and business and market strategy. A team of Frost & Sullivan’s leading analysts and consultants based across the region were involved in the short listing, evaluation and research process. The findings of the detailed examination were then presented to a panel of independent judges comprising influential personalities in the Asia Pacific ICT industry.
