Maxis Achieves Record Sweep of Top Awards at Asian Mobile News Awards 2007
20 June 2007 – Maxis Communications Berhad (“Maxis”) scored three prime awards in the Asian Mobile News Awards 2007, becoming Mobile Operator of the Year (Malaysia) and sweeping up the regional titles of Asian Mobile Operator of the Year and Mobile Operator CEO of the Year.
Maxis Group Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Jamaludin Ibrahim was honoured as Mobile Operator CEO of the Year. According to Asian Mobile News, the award is in recognition of Jamaludin’s admirable efforts to compete and win in the maturing and growing markets of Asia.
Tim Charlton, Editor-in-Chief of Asian Mobile News said, “While operators in Asia have been complaining about rising competition, difficulty in selling 3G services, and limited opportunities to expand, Maxis has been going about the business of building a powerful regional holding of telecom operators in high growth markets. In the 3G market, customers are expected to double. And not only are they taking the market share, the margins are also growing. In Malaysia, where the mobile market is approaching saturation, Maxis has continued to be innovative. Dato’ Jamaludin clearly deserves the credit.”
Maxis was conferred Asian Mobile Operator of the Year and Mobile Operator of the Year (Malaysia) due to clear demonstration of leadership in business performance, sustained service excellence and competitive strive.
Charlton added, “We have seen Maxis compete in some of the toughest markets in the world and win. Take India for example, where Maxis owns Aircel, and where competition cannot get any tougher. Aircel has been singled out as the star performer, doubling their customer base last year and continuing to push the growth momentum into the first quarter of this year.“
Receiving the awards during the ceremony, Jamaludin, said, “The triple win is a remarkable feat and is a tribute to all the employees at the Maxis Group who put tremendous effort every day to ensure that we provide our customers and partners the very best.
“We are honoured to receive these coveted awards, which recognized and marked an important milestone in our journey to become the regional communications leader of choice. The regional titles are especially timely as they reflect the Group’s emerging success in the region in 2006,” he added.
As of end March 2007, the Maxis Group subscriber base stood at 14 million, with 8.5 million customers coming off from its Malaysian operations despite heavy competition, and 5.5 million customers from its Indian operations. The Group’s Indian operations increased market share by a good measure through effective marketing and distribution efforts – quickly establishing Aircel as the up and coming brand in India.
In the year that ended on 31st December 2006, the Group registered a 21% growth with a revenue turnover of RM7.7 billion (US$2.2 billion), while its Net Profit[1] grew 28% to surpass the RM2 billion mark for the first time.
“We have many challenges ahead, but the future offers exciting opportunities in the new areas of growth such as broadband and advanced data services in Malaysia, and the low penetrated market size in India and Indonesia. We have our work cut out for us, and going forward, we are even more set on capitalizing our strength and long term opportunities. The Asian Mobile News Awards we are receiving today encourage us to stretch further and do better,” Jamaludin said.
