KUALA LUMPUR, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 – Members unanimously voted SnT Global Sdn Bhd group chief executive officer David Wong Nan Fay to helm Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia (PIKOM) as its next chairman, at Tuesday's 21st PIKOM Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Wong succeeds PIKOM immediate past chairman Lee Boon Kok, who retires after serving for the past two successive terms, which is the maximum length of service allowed under PIKOM’s Constitution. “I thank members, who represent the ICT industry, for their vote of confidence in my abilities. The newly elected team of PIKOM office bearers and I have served PIKOM in the past nine years. We’re familiar and work well with each other. We’re also thankful for this opportunity to render service to PIKOM and ICT industry,” said Wong, who graduated from Canada’s Dalhousie University with an honours business degree. He has more than 20 years experience in the ICT industry and founded SnT Global in 1999, which now has offices in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and China.

In his first address as PIKOM chairman, Wong said an exciting year looms ahead. “We have in mind to build on four major hubs. The first is to continue efforts of past PIKOM councils to improve and stage activities like PIKOM PC Fair, PIKOM Key Industry Leaders Recognition, CIO Recognition, PIKOM Software and Services Showcase, PIKOM National ICT Awards,” he said, adding these activities would be held on a much larger scale.

The second activity hub revolves around 16th WCIT 2008 Kuala Lumpur next May. “PIKOM will be intensifying its efforts to help promote this event WCIT in the next eight months. We will create a dedicated team comprising PIKOM council members and fellow councillors with the sole intent of securing support and help market this event on a global scale among targeted audiences.” Wong will also steer PIKOM to rapidly build on Malaysia’s success in the past 12 months as a preferred ICT outsourcing destination. “The momentum is growing and in order to grow, we will leverage by building on this success with Outsourcing Malaysia.”

The third activity hub will see the current PIKOM Secretariat evolving in lieu of PIKOM’s growing involvement and commitments to activities which are held on a national, regional and global stage. This includes strengthening PIKOM’s international relations with august bodies like Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO) and World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA). “There is a vast difference between PIKOM’s activities and roles today and that of 20 years ago. As an organisation, we have grown tremendously. This change will specifically benefit members of the Secretariat. We will have better capabilities and resources,” he said.

Lastly, PIKOM will engage in a recruitment drive to increase membership nationwide. PIKOM’s membership grew from 461 in 2005 to 607 last year. Since then, it has added 57 new members, making its total membership at 664. PIKOM will seek to serve companies or educational institutions that have an interest in propagating or using technology. “The convergence of technologies has correspondingly seen the convergence of industries.

ICT service providers, software developers, outsourcing providers and content producers fit this description. We would like to represent and serve their interest,” said Wong. In doing so, PIKOM will have a strong and concerted voice across various segments, and truly more representative of members who are part of Malaysia’s ICT industry’s bio-diversity. This is one of many PIKOM’s contributions to fully represent the nation’s ICT industry.

Continuing PIKOM’s tradition of serving the community, PIKOM announced seven recipients to benefit from its community donations at its AGM. A total of 10 desktop PCs worth RM21,000, including support, will be distributed to seven recipients comprising schools, kindergartens and associations like SJK(T) Ladang Walbrook, Sitiawan, SJKC Chinese National, Kg. Koh and Jawatankuasa Kemajuan dan Keselamatan Kampung, Kampung Deralik. “This is part of our community donations and we are more than happy to make a difference,” said Wong.
