HP Launches First Employee Recycling Drive for Southeast Asia

KUALA LUMPUR, November 14, 2007 – HP today announced the launch of an employee recycling drive in five Southeast Asia countries, encouraging its employees to bring in end-of-life personal technology equipment, to 17 designated collection points at HP offices, for environmentally responsible disposal.Billed as the HP Recycling Week, the drive takes place from Nov 19-23 in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.

HP will accept any brand of the hardware such as CD drives, monitors, keyboards, mice, network devices, notebooks, PDA’s, printers, facsimile machines, projectors, and scanners. There is no limit to the number of items each employee can recycle. To maximize the program’s reach, HP staff will be encouraged to extend the drive to family and friends.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of HP’s recycling program that started in 1987 as a recycling program for employees’ work-related computer equipment and productivity tools. However, this upcoming Recycling Drive is the first concerted effort across Southeast Asia, to take in any brand of technology hardware used for non-work purposes.

“Internal recycling initiatives like these reinforce HP’s commitment to environment responsibility in the region,” said Jean-Claude Vanderstraeten, environmental director, Asia Pacific and Japan, HP. “We are confident that HP employees will respond enthusiastically to them, helping to preserve the environment and getting educated on the long-term benefits of responsible e-waste disposal.”

Recycling at HPThis year marks the 20th anniversary of the inception of HP recycling programs, which now operate in more than 40 countries, regions and territories. The programs seek to reduce the environmental impact of IT products, minimize waste going to landfills and help customers conveniently discard products in an environmentally sound fashion.

In 2006, HP recycled more than 75,000 metric tons (164 million pounds) of hardware and HP print cartridges globally – the equivalent weight of more than 600 jumbo jet airliners.More recently in Asia-Pacific, HP announced on September 4 the expansion of its China recycling program beyond corporate customers to include consumer and small-to-medium business (SMB) customers.

This program enables participants to drop off end-of-life HP IT equipment at collection points in 31 major cities. In addition to recycling, HP offers a variety of product end-of-life management services including trade-in, asset recovery and leasing.
