MIMOS & UNIVERSITY OF SURREY JOIN FORCES TO DEVELOP VIDEO SURVEILLANCE TECHNOLOGIES & SOLUTIONS

KUALA LUMPUR, 23 April 2008 – MIMOS and University of Surrey today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise their collaboration to develop technologies and solutions for video surveillance.

Leveraging on University of Surrey’s Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) expertise and knowledge in pattern recognition, the collaboration with MIMOS’ Center of Advanced Informatics (CAI) will see the rapid prototyping of advanced pattern recognition techniques.

While the technologies and solutions developed through this collaboration between MIMOS & CVSSP will primarily be used for video surveillance, it can also be reconfigured for other commercial applications such as personal authentication, advanced manufacturing, drug discovery, etc.

“This means our indigenous industries will be able to tap into the exciting frontiers of pattern recognition to innovate and further develop a whole range of different products and services in line with MIMOS mission to grow globally competitive indigenous industries by developing innovative technology platforms,” said Dato Abdul Wahab Abdullah, President & CEO, MIMOS.

MIMOS is partnering University of Surrey because CVSSP has the critical mass to make a significant contribution to the challenging domain of computer vision and pattern recognition, driven by applications in digital economy, security and robotics.

MIMOS’ Centre for Advanced Informatics (CAI) is currently focusing on the area of intelligent analysis of human motion and objects classification, within the domain of visual surveillance, which is in line with worldwide demand for new technologies to make video surveillance systems more discerning and intelligent.

Currently the Centre is focusing on researching and developing intelligent video surveillance components which employ algorithms to detect unusual or potentially threatening behaviour. Video analysis enables the automation of video monitoring which is crucial in combating operator fatigue especially if there are a large number of video surveillance cameras being deployed.

CAI, which researches and develops innovative techniques and engines related to the processing and representation of information for problems with commercial potential, aims to excel in image processing and pattern recognition as they relate to machine learning, statistics for machine intelligence as well as complex/non-linear systems.

Both MIMOS CAI and University of Surrey have a strong common research interest
in the area of intelligent analysis of motion and classification of objects within the
domain of visual surveillance.

Mr Trevor Lewis, Director of Trade & Investment from British High Commission, who was also present to witness the momentous signing, said that he is pleased to see that research collaborations between the UK and Malaysia are growing from strength-to-strength and is confident that these collaborations will later lead to commercial spin offs.
