MIMOS launches first Internet of Things Technical Working Group Workshop towards developing National IoT Blueprint
Kuala Lumpur, May 14: MIMOS today launched the first national Internet of Things Technical Working Group (IoT TWG) Workshop to kick start the development of the National IoT Blueprint, which will play a key role in shaping Malaysia’s ICT landscape and take advantage of the numerous opportunities offered by IoT technologies.
The two-day Workshop, which brings together the cream of the cream from the technology community, academia and government agencies nationwide, will share knowledge and discuss ideas on means to best address the importance and impact the IoT will have on the country’s economic and social progress and explore collaboration in IoT research, development and commercialisation.
Launched under the patronage of the Science Advisor to the Prime Minister, Professor Emeritus Dato’ Sri Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid, the opening of the workshop was also attended by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation’s Deputy Secretary General (Science), Dr Zulkifli Mohamed Hashim.
“The IoT will inspire new working practices and business processes, spark a new wave of innovation, allow us to penetrate new markets and industries and encourage greater investments in technology,” said Dr Zulkifli. “With the right direction and policies, the National IoT Blueprint will bring about tremendous economic benefits to the country.”
The Internet of Things encompasses the integration of enabling technologies – devices, embedded software, connectivity/communications and information services, among others. It is expected to transform daily life via the application of smart appliances, homes, offices, vehicles, streets and cities.
Dr Zakri said the Blueprint would realise the Science to Action (S2A) initiative launched last year by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak. The initiative aims to intensify the application of science and technology for industrial development and the wellbeing of Malaysians through three key components: Science to Industry, Science to Wellbeing and Science to Governance.
“The Internet of Things will also act as Science to Action enablers,” he said. “In Science to Industry, for example, it will realise opportunities in the digital age which in turn can lead to a Gross National Income of RM1.7 billion and the creation of 14,720 new jobs by 2020.”
Dr Zakri said the Blueprint would also complement national transformative initiatives as Digital Malaysia, the Government Transformation Programme and the Economic Transformation Programme.
“The Internet of Things will change the digital market and create greater economic value for all organisations and for Malaysia’s economy” he said, adding that the Blueprint would be presented to the government in October.
MIMOS President and Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah said the Internet of Things was a logical progression for the national R&D centre in ICT after having ‘introduced’ the Internet to Malaysia in 1992.
“MIMOS has been undertaking applied research in ICT towards raising national competitiveness and to position Malaysia as an innovation-led economy since our inception in 1985,” he said. “It is therefore fitting that we spearhead the IoT initiative with the support from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.”
Agencies and companies taking part in the Workshop include the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), National Heart Institute, Cisco Systems, Celcom Axiata Berhad, Intel, Oracle Corporation and Microsoft.

KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 6, 2014 – The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) launched the “Big Data Week Kuala Lumpur 2014” today, an initiative that aims to help Malaysia’s ICT industry build its capabilities in Big Data Analytics (BDA), and spur endless opportunities for BDA products and services. With the theme of “Harnessing Value from Your Data Variety”, the launch of the seven-day event which took place at the Connexion@Nexus, Bangsar South City, was officiated by Yang Berhormat Datuk Jailani Johari, Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia and witnessed by Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, Chief Executive Officer of MDeC.
As the only city in South East Asia to be given the honour in showcasing Big Data Week, Kuala Lumpur is at the centre of one of the most unique global platforms of interconnected community events that focuses on the social, political and technological impacts of data. The Big Data Week also brings together a global community of data scientists, data technologies, data visualisers and data businesseses from six major commercial, financial, social, and technological sectors.
Speaking at the launch, Yang Berhormat Datuk Jailani Johari, Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia, said “Malaysian business and technology landscape have grown to such an extent that we are now ready to embrace the new developments around BDA for businesses, the government, community organisation and much more. For local businesses, there is a need to embrace technologies such as BDA to raise their game so that they can be more competitive with large multinational companies. MIMOS AND HP INKS PARTNERSHIP
National R&D centre in ICT becomes ASEAN’s first and currently only HP AllianceONE and SDN Ecosystem partner
Kuala Lumpur, January 10: MIMOS, the national R&D centre in ICT, today announced that it has joined the Software Defined Networks (SDN) Ecosystem framework within the HP AllianceOne HP Networking specialisation, making it the first such partner of the multinational corporation in Malaysia and South East Asia.

MSC Malaysia Companies TAP-ping on New Accelerator Platform to Innovate
New Initiative to accelerate development of solutions by MSC Malaysia Status Companies’
KUALA LUMPUR, 6 December 2013 – In an effort to assist and accelerate the development process of market-driven local products, five Malaysian companies received support through the Technology Acceleration Programme (TAP). The initiative is the brainchild of a tripartite partnership between Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), MIMOS Berhad (MIMOS) and NVIDIA Corporation (NVIDIA).
Launched in April 2013, the initiative saw many applications from MSC Malaysia Status companies, five of which: TESS Innovation Sdn Bhd, N2N Connect Bhd, Cube Global Sdn Bhd, Phoenix Minds Corporation Sdn Bhd, and Data Micron Systems Sdn Bhd, were selected to participate in the programme after an intensive pitching session conducted in June 2013.
The participants underwent a four-day training workshop for both basic and advanced Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) programming which was conducted by both MIMOS and NVIDIA experts. The training was aimed to familiarise the participants with CUDA programming and GPU Technology before moving on to the development phase of GPU applications. Each participant was also paired with a technical mentor who was on hand to assist the participants on adoption and development of GPU Technology prototypes.
In its pilot year, the TAP initiative assists local companies by establishing partnerships with relevant leading technology providers who together, have built an accelerated early adopter platform to enhance the knowledge on how best to leverage NVIDIA’s architecture with MIMOS’ technologies whilst these companies create their innovative solutions on graphics processing unit (GPU) computing technologies.
Dr. Karl Ng, Director of Innovation Capital, MDeC said “TAP offers a new platform for local companies and technology providers to work together and enhance their offerings by gaining as much knowledge, training and guidance in building and strengthening their solutions. These companies are exposed to already established and successful organisations that are ready and eager to support them.
“MDeC is proud to be part of this initiative as it contributes towards our aim to move Malaysia into a digital economy. This partnership serves to encourage upcoming business pioneers to further expand their offerings with the right tools,” he continued.
On 19th November 2013, the five participants presented their achievements that were derived from the programme to a judging panel. Each participant proudly demonstrated the improvements made with their system’s processing speed through parallel processing using NVIDIA GPU. The winning teams are as follows:
TAP Award Winner
• N2N Connect Bhd with their Strategy Optimisation Accelerator which is able to significantly increase the processing speed of stock trading data and reduce the processing time to around 1000%.
TAP Award 1st Runner-up Winner
• TESS Innovation Bhd with their Xcelerated Anti Money Laundering(AML) Watchlist Search via GPU which is able to reduce the task processing time of Watchlist Scanning by more than 100%.
TAP Award 2nd Runner-up Winner
• Phoenix Minds Corporation Sdn Bhd with their Personal Emergency Assistance Solution (PEAS) where an implemented mobile application will locate and alert the nearest person or neighbour whenever the user is in danger or in a life threatening situation.
Other TAP participants
• Cube Global Sdn Bhd with their Virtual Forest system which collates data from 20 million data points which are located on every tree in a specified forest.
• Data Micron Systems Sdn Bhd with their Development of aggregation engine with high performance GPU for ‘Big Data’ query processing. The solution implements backend processing which will increase the speed of ‘query processing’ by more than 100% in processing time reduction through an improved ‘query compression ratio’.
All five participants of the TAP initiative will now be able to showcase their complemented GPU products on the NVIDIA marketplace while the top three winners walked away with cash prizes. Seven-member group of E&E players join hands with TalentCorp to address needs of industry in effort to move Malaysia up the value chain
BUKIT JALIL, 24 OCTOBER 2013: The Semiconductor Fabrication Association of Malaysia (SFAM) and MIMOS, together with TalentCorp launched the Talent Development Programme 2013 today, in a move to overcome the severe shortage of skilled semiconductor engineers locally.
The programme launch was graced by YB Datuk Haji Ir. Hj Hamim Samuri, Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry.
SFAM Chairman Dr Kamarulzaman Mohamed Zin, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Silterra Malaysia Sdn Bhd said there is a pressing need to increase the number of engineers, scientists and technologists to serve this highly competitive global industry, which is in line with the aspiration of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) in moving up the value chain within the Electrical &Electronics industry.
SFAM’s talent development objectives include bridging the gap between academia and the industry and creating more local semiconductor technopreneurs. It is envisioned that an increased pool of higher-tiered skilled workforce in the country will move Malaysia up the value chain and encourages more local start-up companies in high-tech fields.
This will, in turn encourage more foreign investment into the country and set Malaysia up as a cost-effective semiconductor hub with sufficient local resources.

“We are giving back to the community by positioning Government assets to enhance the E&E eco-system by offering them for industry and academia use,” he added.
MIMOS Wafer Fabrication plant includes facilities for IC Design, Failure Analysis, Testing and Reliability Lab and Advanced Skills Lab. MIMOS will be providing training for a specially-designed programme for SFAM members called SFAM Graduates Upskilling Development (GUD). Not just limited to SFAM members, MIMOS’ Advanced Skills Training Centre is also open to E&E based companies, universities and other training organisations.
MIMOS’ experience of over 15 years in Wafer Fabrication, analysis, design and support equipment repair enables it to offer on-the-job high-end training schemes based on industry’s needs. To-date, MIMOS has trained 850 local engineers to become highly-qualified experts. In a nutshell, the economic return from having skilled talents is about RM1.3 billion to RM1.7 billion a year.

UPSI LAUNCHES FIRST PSYCHOMETRICS PROFILING FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND ACADEMIC STAFF
Profiling developed in collaboration with MIMOS aims to enhance decision-making towards quality education
KUALA LUMPUR, 24 SEPTEMBER 2013: Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim, Perak recently launched UPSI Pscychometrics; a project developed in collaboration with MIMOS to be used in educational institutions to better assess students as well as academic staff.
This strategic partnership between UPSI and MIMOS successfully blends both respective expertise and technologies to jointly develop 4 instruments that can be used to better assess the suitability of students towards their topic of study, and therefore, to maximise the students potential to excel in their education.
The Psychometrics Cluster at MIMOS is instrumental is promoting and practising psychometrics in Malaysia and has the expertise in the fundamentals and applications of psychometrics theories and techniques as well as psychometric-related technologies for educational as well as psychological testing in Malaysia.
MIMOS’ collaboration with UPSI, synonymous with the Malaysian education field creates a synergy with the latter as a subject matter expert in the development of tests namely in the field of Psychology, ICT, Mathematics, Malay Language, English language to enhance decision-making towards quality education.
Dr Haniza Yon, Head of MIMOS Psychometrics Cluster said that four of the developed tests by UPSI and MIMOS are Aptitude Test for University, Proficiency in ICT, Computer-assisted English Language Test and Ujian Nilai BITARA.
“This Psychometrics Profiling will enhance decision-making in the selection of students by systematically gauging their abilities as well as evaluate the proficiency of university staff. It is time Malaysia adopts a methodical and objective approach such as these, which will benefit not just the university, but the community in the long run,” added Dr. Haniza.
The Aptitude Test for University (AT4U) identifies students’ potential thus enhances their learning based on their ability and can also identify the best candidates for placement purposes into programmes offered by the university.
The Proficiency in ICT (ProfIT) measure competencies of individuals in using various ICT applications for placement purposes. It can identify individuals’ strengths and weaknesses in ICT competencies and assists learning institutions in evaluation and benchmarking of their ICT programmes.
The Computer-assisted English Language Test (CaELT) serves as a placement test into programmes based on students’ strengths and weaknesses in English language. This will enable scaffolding to weak students and at the same time provide insights into their future English capability.
Lastly, the Ujian Nilai BITARA helps in professional development and selection of academic staff to ensure that academicians’ values are align with institution’s vision and mission.

MIMOS AND AFRICA CITY OF TECHNOLOGY, SUDAN SEALS PARTNERSHIP WITH A MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT
MoA will enable both parties to set up a joint venture company to invest and commercialise MIMOS technologies in Sudan.
KUALA LUMPUR, 9 July 2013: MIMOS, the National R&D Centre in ICT and Africa City of Technology (ACT); an entity under the Government of Sudan entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) today to establish a private sector-driven joint venture vehicle (JVCo).
ACT, a Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) park venture capital, is affiliated with the Ministry of Science and Technology of Sudan and is tasked to build the Sudanese national capability and industry.
The partnership will see MIMOS as a mentor to nurture ACT by sharing its Open Innovation Platform (OIP) to help Sudan kick start their ICT industry. MIMOS will provide the technology investment while ACT takes up the capital investment. This will enable industries to take up MIMOS OIP and offer unique solutions to Sudan.
The MoA is a progression from the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties on 1 November 2012 in Khartoum, Sudan.
The cooperation will involve technologies such as;
i. Public Cloud Services
ii. Mini Cloud solution for education sector (e-Learning)
iii. Mesh Wifi with Cloud services in the Khartoum area
iv. High Performance Computing services for animation random simulation
v. Precision Agriculture - mini green house solution; and
vi. Nanotechnology research
“In MIMOS, our business objectives are best met when we synergise our capabilities with our partners. This provides us with a conduit for locally developed technology to be exported worldwide and serves as an excellent platform for Malaysia to demonstrate its R&D capabilities to the world,” said MIMOS President and CEO, Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah.
The collaboration is a win-win situation where ACT will benefit from the technical knowledge, experience and expertise shared by MIMOS, while Malaysian industries can benefit through the new market opportunities in Sudan.
“This is our first partnership with an African nation and we hope Sudan will be our strategic partner to help us build the bridge to other countries in the African continent,” added Abdul Wahab.
This Government-to-Government (G2G) partnership event was witnessed by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, YB Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin and The Republic of Sudan Ambassador to Malaysia, H.E Khalid Abdelgadir Shukri. The MoA document was signed by Abdul Wahab and MIMOS Chief Operating Officer Abd Aziz Abd Kadir on behalf of MIMOS, while ACT was represented by its Director General Dr. Osama Rayis and Chief Executive Officer, ASASAT Group, Mohammed Mahjoo .

NVIDIA Opens GPU R&D and Compute-Solution Center in Malaysia with MIMOS
One-Stop Center First in Southeast Asia to Champion GPU Technologies
KUALA LUMPUR—Oct. 19, 2012—NVIDIA yesterday launched Southeast Asia’s first GPU R&D and Compute-Solution Center in Malaysia, working with HP and MIMOS.
The center, which is located on MIMOS campus, will serve as a one-stop shop to promote, share and teach GPU technologies and solutions to customers and those interested in general purpose GPU (GPGPU), as well as to perform collaborative work on GPU-related topics.
In addition to featuring leading GPU-enabled applications – such as SolidWorks, Autodesk 3ds Max, ANSYS, Abaqus and Adobe CS6 – the center will promote the dynamic growth of GPU computing in Malaysia. Local activities include: collaborative university research projects; creating CUDA teaching centers at universities; GPGPU workshops; CUDA programming contests; technology road shows; and hosting government and industry visits.
It will also cater to GPU-related activities, such as developing GPU accelerator libraries,
R&D in GPGPU-enabled applications and generic algorithms, and GPGPU application benchmark and testing.

Powered by an HP Converged Infrastructure architecture featuring HP ProLiant Servers, HP Networking switches and HP 3PAR Storage, the GPU R&D and Compute Solution Center will facilitate the adaptation of many-core, parallel and GPU techniques in scientific, financial and big data processing.
“The creation of this center reflects the increasing use of GPU computing in demanding general-purpose scientific, engineering and computational finance applications,” said Francis Yu, Vice President of APAC Sales and Marketing at NVIDIA. “Together, NVIDIA, HP and MIMOS are championing the development of GPU computing, and bringing its benefits to organizations in Malaysia and around the region.”

MIMOS currently utilizes the center for research and development in big data processing in the area of text processing, financial computation, and data scrambling. Alcatel-Lucent Celebrates the Contribution of Women Employees
March 13, 2012 – Kuala Lumpur. More than 50 women employees from Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia gathered at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur recently to celebrate International Women’s Day. Among the various activities for the day, attendees also took the opportunity to share experiences about their careers, personal accomplishments and aspirations for the future.
Mohd Fazlin Shah Mohd Salleh, President and Managing Director for Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia, in his address to the attendees, acknowledged the significant contributions made by women employees and noted that the company is committed to support their career aspirations.
Dr Haniza Yon, Cluster Head and Research Director of Psychometrics Cluster, MIMOS Berhad was a guest speaker at the session. She spoke about her career as a psychometrician and about the experience of being a successful career woman in a field largely dominated by men.

THE EXCHANGE OF MOU & MOA BETWEEN THE MINISTRY OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION (MOSTI) AND THE STATE GOVERNMENT OF SABAH
THE EXCHANGE OF MOU & MOA BETWEEN THE MINISTRY OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION (MOSTI) AND THE STATE GOVERNMENT OF SABAH ON TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT AND RESEARCH PROGRAMMES IN AGRICULTURE & RELATED INDUSTRIES IN SABAH
KUALA LUMPUR (October 10, 2011) :
The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), through it agencies, signed three Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and two Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Sabah state government for technology development, innovation and research programmes in agriculture and its related industries in Sabah.
The exchange of documents was witnessed by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister who is also the state Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Yahya Hussin, and MOSTI Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili.The first was between MOSTI agency MIMOS Berhad (MIMOS) and Sabah Agriculture Department (JPS) for a development programme on Precision Agriculture Farming. For this purpose, JPS will be the technology recipient of the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) developed by MIMOS together with Universiti Putra Malaysia, Kontron Design Manufacturing Services Sdn Bhd and Intel Technology Sdn Bhd.
The Agriculture Research Centre in Tuaran, has been identified for the pilot project for the WSN Technology for Precision Agriculture. Once the pilot project is completed, a commercial entity will commercialise the WSN technology in Sabah as well as other parts of Malaysia. The WSN has been acknowledged by PEMANDU Electrical & Electronics (E&E) NKEA as a potential New Source of Growth for the Nation.
Under the second MoU, MIMOS will provide its semantic technology to develop a knowledge management platform for Sabah Development Authority (SEDIA)’s Herbal Medicine Knowledge Repository Project. This repository project will belinked to various other similar knowledge repositories around the world, thus enabling local user access to information from both local and global knowledge databases on herbal medicine.
The third MoU between All Cosmos Industries Sdn. Bhd., a bionexus company, and Sabah Softwoods Bhd. forge a smart partnership through the establishment of a joint venture company called Sabah Softwoods Hybrid Fertiliser Sdn Bhd (SSHF), to be facilitated by the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation, an agency under MOSTI.
Under this collaboration, SSHF will construct an organic fertiliser production facility in Sabah All Cosmos Industries Sdn Bhd’s technology, with an investment totaling RM50 million.
The event also witnessed two tripartite Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the National Agribiotechnology Institute (ABI), JPS and an international bionexus company Pure Circle Sdn Bhd; and between ABI, Pure Circle and Koperasi Pembangunan Desa Sabah (KPDS). Both MoA were signed to develop the Stevia planting industry in Sabah. Stevia is a shrub (Stevia Rabaudiana Bertoni) capable of producing non-sugar zero calories sweetner through two natural compounds Stevioside dan Rebaudioside which have a high value and increasing global commercial demand. The sweetness of the two compounds is reported to be 200-300 times that of sugar and.
The collaborations involve the optimisation of agronomic practices for several varieties of Stevia to selectthe variety most suitable and economic for commercial planting in Sabah. It is also aimed at ensuring market access for the Stevia products by ensuringfarmers involved in the programme have up-to-date information on the commodity price and market demand.
A briefing session on the progress of the programmes was also held prior to the MoU and MoA exchanges.
In the Ninth Malaysia Plan (RMKe-9), MOSTI has funded 104 research and development (R&D) projects in Sabah related to the agriculture industry valued at more than RM54 million. These projects were implemented with the collaboration of Sabah state government agencies such as JPS, SEDIA, Koperasi Pembangunan Desa Sabah (KPDS) and Jabatan Perikanan Sabah.
The projects funded under the ministry’s Technofund (for pre-commercialisation) and the ScienceFund (research- based) for agriculture technology and industry development in Sabah included in aquaculture. Examples are projects involving the indigenous freshwater fish Turongou (spotted barbs) and marine products such as sea cucumber, oysters, seaweed and grouper.
MOSTI has also funded InnoFund and Community Innofund programmes in Sabah throughout RMK9 and through RMK10. The Innofund programmes are aimed at generating income for small industries and communities through the application of technologies, while encouraging entrepreneurship. The programmes include vanilla cultivation in Kota Marudu, virgin coconut oil processing in Kudat and animal feed and organic fertiliser production in Penampang.

KUALA LUMPUR, 18 AUGUST 2011 – MIMOS, the premier applied research centre in frontier technologies, has been certified as one of five national Nanotechnology Centres of Excellence (CoE) under the NanoMalaysia Programme.
In line with the national aspiration of making Nanotechnology the enabling engine for the new economic growth, MIMOS’ Nanotechnology CoE is focusing on incorporating Nanotechnology to its platforms which are expected to directly contribute towards the National Key Focus Areas (NKEAs) namely in Agriculture, Health, Education, Government, and Communications.
MIMOS current Nano-related R&D efforts include the development of its top-down and bottom-up Nanofabrication, Nanomaterial processing and Nanodevices testing facilities. As part of its characterisation and analysis efforts, MIMOS also focuses on simulation, modelling and formulation of mathematical models of its Nanofabrication, Nanomaterials and Nanodevices.
“We are also working closely with the National Nanotechnology Directorate (NND) to provide a common platform for universities, research centers and industries aimed at building collaborations towards a concerted effort in developing the nation’s Nanotechnology capabilities. This also involves establishing MIMOS as the gateway for international collaboration in state-of-art Nanotechnology research. As part of its intentions, MIMOS strives to the be the preferred shared facility in Nanofabrication, Nanocharacterization and full scale manufacturing of Nano-based devices for the country as well as being the regional referral centre in Nanoelectronics,” said MIMOS’ Director of Research for MEMS/NEMS & Nanoelectronics, En. MIMOS Sensor Systems and Solutions Technology Platform Roadmap
MIMOS’ sensor systems and solutions technology platform roadmap from 2011 to 2015, developed in line with global market growth expectations, is focused on enhancing its sensors and microenergy devices. This would be possible by incorporating Nanotechnology based elements to ensure higher sensitivity, better responses, lower power consumption, smaller size, increased robustness, flexibility and energy storage capacity as well as to make it more ideal for power conversion and cost competitive for other industries such as aquaculture, environmental, health, safety and defense. At current, the Nanoelectronics team efforts focuses on functionalising its Nanomaterials and integrating Nanomaterials with its various sensors and microenergy devices.
Moving forward in 2012, MIMOS’ Nanotechnology R&D efforts will focus on developing gas and heavy metal sensors and digital farming intelligent systems; while in 2013 will see further advancement of its sensors to target applications such as as bio sensors and remote environmental monitoring and food traceability.
In 2014 the focus will be on sweat and body nutrient sensors, livestock and plant disease monitoring systems using Nano-fluidic devices. As a target goal for 2015, these sensors are to be developed into a reconfigurable platform with focus on wearable bio-medical devices integrated with ubiquitous sensors.
According to Cientifica, a global consulting firm that tracks technology from the lab to the boardroom, the market for products enabled by nanotechnology is expected to reach US265 Billion by 2012 and US1.5 Trillion by 2015. The highest growth rates are expected to be in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors although many other niche applications have enormous potential to grow into very significant markets. MIMOS has a comprehensive product development and commercialization practice which aims to help develop the local industries into manufacturers of high valued technological products.
MIMOS Nanotechnology Centre of Excellence (CoE)
MIMOS Nanotechnology CoE has grown from strength to strength in terms of headcount, expertise and capabilities since it was first established in 2004.
To date MIMOS’ Nanotechnology CoE comprises 37 domain experts in Nanotechnology and the target is to increase the number of researchers by two fold over the next five years in line with its goal of becoming the competency development centre for next generation Nanotechnologists. The Nanotechnology Division is also being supported by MIMOS’ very good mix of full time, qualified and internationally renowned researchers, product developers, product and system architects and mathematicians.
The total patent disclosure count for the Nanotechnology CoE has also increased from 24 in 2006 to 190 in 2010, of which 79 have been filed and six patents granted by MyIPO.
MIMOS’ Nanotechnology CoE includes state-of-the-art cleanrooms that houses an array of Nanofabrication equipment, capable of processing up to eight inch wafers and a comprehensive laboratory for nanocharacterisation and analysis. MIMOS has process capability in synthesizing Nanoparticles, Nanowires, Nanotubes and Nanocomposites that are also aimed at waferscale devices.
To date MIMOS Nanotechnology CoE has produced 3 main types of Nanostructures namely Nanoparticles, Nanotubes/Nanowires and Nanocomposites. It has also developed high aspect ratio silicon Nanostructures for various NEMS applications.

MIMOS FRONTIER TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS AWARDED TO FIVE INDIGENOUS COMPANIES
PUTRAJAYA, 22 JUNE 2009 – MIMOS frontier technology platforms today were transferred to five indigenous industries for commercialisation in line with MIMOS mission to grow globally competitive indigenous industries.
“The ultimate goal is to drive technology from a tool (maximizing the utility of the technology) to an enabler (integrating multiple technologies and domain knowledge to form one system) and subsequently as a sector (pushing for technology to be adopted as standard),” said Dato’ Abdul Wahab Abdullah, President & CEO, MIMOS.
According to Dato’ Wahab, to date MIMOS has received 76 technology transfer applications from potential technology recipients and the target is to have more than 100 by year end. MIMOS has already developed a total of 21 technology prototypes.
Technology transfer is the process by which MIMOS licenses its technology platforms to selected technology recipients, who will further develop these technology platforms into products and applications to serve each individual market vertical that they are currently serving.
The commercialization of MIMOS’ applied research output is in line with the government’s aspiration of Malaysia becoming a net exporter of ICT products by 2020.
“The transfer of MIMOS frontier technology platforms from our laboratories to the indigenous industries is a testimony of how MIMOS is building a vibrant technology eco-system, in our efforts towards commercialization of home grown technologies as a vital source of national economic development and revenue for the country,” Dato’ Wahab said.
The five technology recipients of MIMOS technology platforms are:
1. Bill Adam Associates Sdn Bhd was licensed the Personalizer Platfrom On Demand (PPOD) – PPOD is a middleware platform that enables mobile application provider to develop personalizer and context-Aware applications. The technology is useful in areas such as tracking, intelligent dynamic profiler and shopping recommender.
2. InfoValley Life Sciences Sdn Bhd was licensed the Semantic Infosteology – a platform for computer application to be meaning and knowledge-based;
3. In-Fusion Solutions Sdn Bhd was licensed the Ontology Driven Intelligent Diagnoser Advisor (ODIDA) – ODIDA is ontology knowledge-based for pediatric, cardiovascular and occupational health. Utilises high speed “Hand Free” interaction with semantic knowledge base for patient diagnosis via wearable computer (Zypad).
4. Pernec Integrated Network Systems Sdn Bhd was licensed the MIMOS WiWi Gen 1.5 (a hybrid solution that provides WiFi as a hotspot and WiMax as a backhaul), Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) and Semantic Technology;
5. CeedTec Sdn Bhd was licensed the MIMOS WiWi Gen 1.5 a hybrid solution that provides WiFi as a hotspot and WiMax as a backhaul).
The five technology recipients were identified by MOSTI, under its technology licensing programme, in line with the national mission to increase the country’s commercialization rate to at least 10% from research and development (R&D) initiatives undertaken by the public sector, as outlined in the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP).
Through MOSTI’s technology licensing programme, MIMOS is helping bolster the growth of globally competitive indigenous companies and industries, through strategic market-driven product development and advanced technology, which essentially involves the development of frontier technology platforms for commercialization by indigenous industries.
The technology transfer was officiated by Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation Datuk Maximus Ongkili at a ceremony held in Putrajaya today.

MIMOS AND FISHERIES DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY OF MALAYSIA (LKIM) IN PACT TO DEVELOP FISH FORECASTING SYSTEM
To increase fish production to RM11 billion by 2010
KOTA KINABALU, SABAH, 25 MAY 2009 – MIMOS recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) to develop a Fish Forecasting System (FFS) in line with increasing fish haul to a value of RM11billion by 2010 as outlined in the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
Under the agreement, MIMOS will design and develop the FFS including the development of fish location forecasting model, database portal development and an information dissemination system to distribute the forecasted fish locations.
LKIM will provide the content such as in-situ data, oceanography and acoustic data; fish catch and fish landing data.
“The FFS, expected to be available in April 2010 will enable fishermen to save between 20% and 40% of the total time spent on locating potential fishing zones which is currently based on fishermen tacit knowledge and experience,” said Dato’ Abdul Wahab Abdullah, President & Chief Executive Officer, MIMOS.
“In addition, the FSS as MIMOS’ proof-of-concept for the fishery industry will demonstrate that our technology platforms are able to cut across all verticals including traditional and non-traditional sectors,” he added.
The integration of remote sensing data (sea surface temperature and chlorophyll concentration) provided by Malaysian Remote Sensing Agency in the FFS will play a crucial part in determining the potential fishing zones.
The FFS is expected to result in higher fishing productivity; enhance the livelihood of fishermen and achieve a sustainable development for the fisheries industry in Malaysia.The MoA follows the FFS project kick-off in August 2007. The FFS is a joint R&D project between MIMOS, Malaysian Remote Sensing Agency, Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF), LKIM and National Fishermen’s Association of Malaysia (NEKMAT) for the development of an efficient system for fish forecasting for a sustainable fisheries industry.

MIMOS BAGS THREE MALAYSIA GOOD DESIGN MARK AWARDS
Three technology platforms recognised for best design and quality under the Media and Home Electronics Category
Kuala Lumpur, 29 April, 2009 – MIMOS bagged three Malaysia Good Design Mark Awards 2008, under the media and home electronics category, a Government initiative under the Malaysia Design Council to recognise the best designs and quality of products developed by local companies.
The award, aimed at promoting locally-designed products, recognized MIMOS for the best designs and quality for three of its frontier technology platforms namely agriculture data collector, MIMOS WiWi wireless router and Jen-ii.
“We are indeed proud that our technology platforms have been recognized for its quality and innovativeness. The award further underscores our commitment to ensuring MIMOS becomes the premier applied research centre in frontier technologies,” said MIMOS President & Chief Executive, Dato’ Abdul Wahab Abdullah.
MIMOS ranked top for its design and quality in the media and home electronics products category for three technology platforms namely:
Ø Agriculture Data Collector, designed by MIMOS’ Staff Engineer (Industrial Design) Nuzairi Yasin, is a Micro-electro Mechanical System (MEMS)-based sensor used to detect the composition and condition of soil. It is oval shaped with a textured body surface which is light and portable, making it an easier holding and plugging collector as a agriculture on-site application.
Ø MIMOS WiWi Wireless Router, designed by MIMOS’ Staff Engineer (Industrial Design) Saharudin Busri,is a hybrid frontier technology platform of WiMAX and WiFi which has a high capacity wireless mesh network (WMN) architecture using WiMAX technology. The MIMOS WiWi wireless router sports a simple design with smooth corner radius, canopy type of assembly which is easy to assemble, water proof, saves tooling cost and environmentally friendly.
Ø Jen-ii (Jendela Informasi Internet), designed by MIMOS’ Staff Engineer (Industrial Design) Saharudin Busri, is an information and communications technology (ICT) literacy tool aimed at bridging the digital divide. Designed with the latest communications technologies for all walks of life, Jen-ii is a set-top box connected to a television which offers Internet connectivity and access to grid-based content.
This is the second year MIMOS has won the Malaysia Good Design Mark Awards. Last year, MIMOS’ iDOLA was recognized for its design and quality, also under the media and home electronics products category category.
iDOLA is an affordable tablet PC which is designed to make computing and information portable for its users.

MIMOS-UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA SABAH CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE TO SUPPORT GROWTH OF SABAH DEVELOPMENT CORRIDOR
MIMOS-University Sabah Centre of Excellence to develop domain experts in Semantic Technology
KOTA KINABALU, SABAH, 27 APRIL 2009 ─ MIMOS recently launched its Centre of Excellence in Semantic Agents (CoE) in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to support the growth and development of Sabah Development Corridor (SDC).
The CoE is designed to help develop local talents into domain experts in Semantic Technology particularly Semantic Multi-Agent Technology as part of MIMOS’ efforts to further build human capital competency for SDC in line with the country’s Knowledge-economy drive.
“There is huge potential for Semantic technology and we will soon see it coming out of MIMOS research labs and being applied in real business verticals. The penetration of Semantic Web technology in industries and in services, will accelerate once organisations begin to realise the potential for economic growth and well being,” said Dato’ Abdul Wahab Abdullah, President & CEO, MIMOS.
MIMOS is collaborating with UMS to develop:
· Semantic Agent Communication Language - agents communicate with each other in a multi-agent environment by using “Agent Communication Language”. Joint research between MIMOS and UMS will move the sophistication of this communication language from “syntax-level” to “semantic-level”.
· Semantic Agent Components - an agent is made up of many components. Different agent architecture is determined by different sets of interconnecting components. This joint research attempts to move the syntax based agent components to semantic based agent components, thus enabling the agent to perform knowledge level processing.
· Semantic Multi – Agent Platform – To accommodate Semantic Agents with semantic technology based components that utilizes Semantic Agent Communication Language to interact with each other, we are required to develop Semantic Technology Based Multi-Agent
“The establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Semantic Agent at UMS is a further demonstration of MIMOS’ efforts in empowering local universities as our virtual researchers towards growing globally competitive indigenous industries,” he said.

MIMOS Semantic Technology Platform
MIMOS has been in close collaboration with various local and foreign universities and organizations to drive the Semantic Technology industry for the nation in its efforts to ensure Malaysia is recognised as the first Web 3.0 society in the world.
Towards this end, MIMOS has also established a joint research lab at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and is specifically working with UNIMAS’ Faculty of Computing Science and Information Technology and the Faculty of Cognitive Science on Multimodal Understanding and Semantic Augmented Reality.
MIMOS partners in the area of Semantic include foreign universities and organizations such as German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Germany; KNOW-CENTRE, University Technology Graz, Austria; Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong; University Montpellier II, France; University of Calgary, Canada; Franz Inc., USA; Vivomind Inc., USA; and Knowledge Networks Inc, Australia.
In addition, MIMOS is a full member of Semantic Technology Institute International (STI - International) and a member of The World Wide Web (W3C) Advisory Committee.
Semantics is the study of meaning; while Semantic Technologies include software standards and methodologies that are aimed at providing more explicit meaning for the information at one’s disposal. Semantic technology enables computers to achieve a higher degree of ‘understanding’ the meaning of the information they process; thereby providing users with better opportunities to navigate through the vast amount of information and to find facts in unlimited volumes of documents, Internet resources and services. The Semantic Web allows publishing of structured data, the meaning of which is described and understandable by people and computers alike. In this way it is possible to publish and share databases in the same way as this is possible for texts today.

MIMOS AND HUNGARY-BASED MTA SZTAKI TO DEVELOP A GRID-BASED WORKFLOW MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
MALAYSIA, 12 March 2009 – MIMOS and Hungary-based Computer and Automation Research Institute Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA SZTAKI) recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the development of a grid workflow management system to automate the distribution of IT processes and harness existing computing resources.
Today’s MoA follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in June 2008 between MTA SZTAKI and MIMOS for the transfer of knowledge and technology on workflow management technology. 
“Ultimately the P-GRADE portal, under KnowledgeGRID Malaysia, will enhance collaborative efforts in the bioinformatics and chemistry and animation industries,” said MIMOS’ Grid Computing Cluster Head, Thillai Raj.
P-GRADE Portal is essentially a workflow oriented computational grid portal that supports the development and execution of workflow based on grid applications through high-level, graphical Web interfaces. It solves interoperability issues within different grid middleware technologies. Workflows developed in the P-GRADE portal are portable between different Grids without any re-learning of the new Grid system or re-engineering the application. It can connect various grid systems based on these grid middleware technologies such as Enabling Grid for E-sciencE (EGEE), TeraGrid, South Eastern European Grid-enabled eInfrastructure Development (SEE-GRID), Open Science Grid (OSG) and UK National Grid Service (NGS).
KnowledgeGRID Malaysia, launched in August 2007, is part of the European Grid Network Infrastructure - the only Malaysian grid site certified under the European Commission that meets the production quality standards of the European grid infrastructure. KnowledgeGRID Malaysia marked a significant step forward towards the creation of a cyber-infrastructure for Malaysia to provide a coordinated, single economic engine to compete with the rest of the world. MIMOS & THE FRENCH NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN COLLABORATION TO DEVELOP SEMANTIC TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS
KUALA LUMPUR, 9 JANUARY 2009 – MIMOS and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), via its research entity The Montpellier Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics (LIRRM), yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to their collaboration for the development of Semantic Technology platforms.
Under the MoU, LIRMM will provide high-level training in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the Knowledge Technology Cluster at MIMOS. In addition, LLIRM will offer high level guidance to the use, adaptation and possible extensions to several graph-based visual tools for building conceptual graph knowledge databases, namely CoGITaN and CoGUI, developed by LIRMM. The Knowledge Technology research team at MIMOS will be utilizing extended versions of these tools for the development of next generation Semantic Technology.

“Semantics Technology holds great promise to solve corporation’s biggest nightmares and managing customer information is just one good example of the kind of service that could prove semantic technology’s promise. It has the potential to deploy intelligence into applications for across verticals including business and financial; agriculture; medical; automotive; and public safety,” said Dr Dickson Lukose, Head, Knowledge Technology Cluster, MIMOS.
The ICT market space for Semantics Technology between 2006 and 2015 is projected at USD283B. Whilst the technology’s market share in 2006 was USD2B, in 2010 it is expected to rise to USD52B, with the Asian market taking up the share at USD12.6B.
Ultimately, the collaboration between MIMOS and CNRS is expected to result in positioning MIMOS as a leading applied research center in Semantic Technology in line with MIMOS’ mission to grow globally competitive indigenous industries.

MIMOS TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS CONTINUES TO GAIN MOMENTUM
KUALA LUMPUR, 5 DECEMBER 2008 – The Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), through its strategic agency MIMOS, yesterday exchanged Memorandum of Agreements with 10 technology recipients from various local industries to develop products based on MIMOS technology platforms for commercialization.
“MIMOS technology platforms developed at our labs continues to gain momentum from the indigenous industries. PIKOM AND MIMOS IN PACT TO ACCELERATE COMMERCIALISATION OF LOCALLY DEVELOPED TECHNOLOGIES
To fulfill ICT needs and market demands towards growing globally competitive local companies and indigenous industries
PETALING JAYA, August 28, 2008 – PIKOM and MIMOS today sealed a pact to accelerate commercialisation of locally-developed technologies in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) field.
Through collaborative efforts, as outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed today, the two parties will leverage on each other’s strengths and capabilities to fulfill the ICT needs and market demands towards growing globally competitive local companies and indigenous industries.
Being the National ICT Association of Malaysia, PIKOM knows the ICT market and players well; while MIMOS as the premier applied research centre in frontier technologies, is focused on developing new frontier technology platforms, some of which are now ready for commercialization.
“This combination opens up numerous possibilities in terms of development of new ICT solutions needed by in the local market. Quite likely, some of these solutions could also be applicable to overseas markets.
“This fits well into our 5 Year Strategic Plan which seeks to expand both the domestic and export markets for local ICT players. The ultimate goal of the Plan is to double the Malaysian ICT market size from about RM40 billion in 2007 to RM80 billion in 2012,” says PIKOM President C J Ang, who represented PIKOM at the MoU signing ceremony.
Signing on behalf of MIMOS was its President and Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Abdul Wahab Abdullah. The signing was witnessed by Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) YB Tuan Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof.
“This collaboration is aimed at moving the local ICT industry up the value chain through the base technology platforms, developed by MIMOS, upon which the indigenous industries can build products for the local and international markets,” said Dato’ Wahab.
“MIMOS’ focuses on strategic market-driven product development and advanced technology, which essentially involves the development of technology for future products through commercialization, to meet market needs. As such, without having to invest in research, which has a long gestation period and high market uncertainty, the indigenous industries are able to focus on building the brand and the marketing channels,” he added.
The collaboration will, among others, see PIKOM and MIMOS working closely in identifying market requirements, of the Malaysian ICT industry, and matching those requirements against technologies developed at MIMOS’ laboratories.
Both parties will also assist each other in identifying suitable technology recipients of MIMOS for the purpose of commercialization in line with MOSTI’s technology licensing and transfer programme.
In cases where the required technologies have not yet been developed, MIMOS will work closely with the potential intended recipients to map out their specific requirements and needs.
The MoU is valid for five years and renewal of the partnership after this period will be subject to mutual agreement from both parties.
