NEC Delivers High Quality Digital Video Fiber Transmission Units to Korean Communications Carriers

Helping to realize Korea’s first nation-wide HDTV networks using non-compression transmission technology

Tokyo, June 17, 2008 - NEC Corporation today announced that it has delivered approximately 180 “NOIF-2000” non-compression video signal optical interface units for transmitting high quality digital images to KT and LG Dacom, which are communication carriers in Korea.

Since delivery of units, KT and LG Dacom have incorporated them into program transmission systems built for KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) and MBC (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation). Both systems commenced full-scale operation in December 2007 and were put to immediate use for transmitting video programming during Korea’s presidential election held on December 19.

The NOIF-2000 interface converts digital terrestrial broadcasts and other digital video signals into optical signals, enabling long distance transmission. As signals are transmitted without compression, the device delivers high quality program transmission with no video deterioration. Furthermore, the NOIF-2000 can be connected to the “SONET/SDH”* networks, which are backbone networks commonly used by communication carriers. By adopting the NOIF-2000 interface communication carriers can realize a digital video transmission network while still making full use of existing backbone networks.

KT and LG Dacom integrated NOIF-2000 interfaces with their own SONET/SDH networks to realize Korea’s first nation-wide high definition television (HDTV) systems using non-compression transmission for KBS and MBC.

With Korea scheduled to switch from analog to full digital TV broadcasting by 2012, all Korean broadcasters are expected to upgrade their facilities. NEC intends to increase sales of the NOIF-2000 in the global market, starting with Korea and the Asian region for the expansion of business activities in the broadcasting field.

NEC will continue to draw on its extensive experience in the construction of digital broadcasting systems for a wide range of domestic and international broadcasters, as well as its proven track record in the delivery of high quality video transmission units to leading communication carriers, to provide advanced video solutions that leverage Next Generation Network (NGN) technology.
