Fortinet Secures NEC Cloud Platform
FortiGate Next-Generation Firewalls to be Front Line of Defense for NEC’s MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation Software
MALAYSIA, September 30, 2013 – Fortinet - a world leader in high-performance network security - today announced its FortiGate network security platform has been selected by NEC as the next generation firewall for its MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation cloud platform software. The NEC software, announced in May, supports automatic configuration, deployment and operation of cloud (Infrastructure as a Service) environments within enterprise and service provider data centers. While the platform is initially geared for the Japanese market, NEC plans to expand sales to additional markets, including North America, Europe and Asia.
The MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation software is the first cloud platform software to utilize software-defined networking (SDN), which automates cloud operations through OpenFlow, the communications protocol that gives access to the forwarding plane of a network switch or router over the network. The software is linked to the company’s Programmable Flow Controller PF6800 and enables centralized control of virtual servers and virtual networks. NEC’s cloud platform makes it possible to automate operations for changing network settings arising from virtual server retrieval requests from users, a process that has up until now been time consuming for server administrators.
Fortinet’s FortiGate network security platform is the first third-party next-generation firewall to be certified by NEC to protect its cloud platform. Since 2010, NEC and Fortinet have worked together to deploy the FortiGate platform as the security resource in the SDN environments NEC has built. Today, the integration of FortiGate in MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation represents another step in enhancing the security of SDN environments in the cloud.
“We are pleased to be extending our relationship with Fortinet to our new secured cloud platform. The customer feedback to date has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Akinori Itou, general manager, System Software Division, NEC. “By combining our strength in cloud platform development with Fortinet’s strength in network security innovation, we believe we are perfectly positioned to offer our customers a secure software defined cloud platform that offers high levels of reliability, usability and simplified operability.”
“Software defined networking is more than a buzzword. It’s a reality. But the question on minds today is how to secure them,” said Norio Kubota, country manager for Fortinet Japan. “We believe we’ve found an answer with our collaboration with NEC. With their MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation software, we are able to automatically route all of a customer’s internal and perimeter traffic through our next-generation firewalls, which greatly improves the customer’s security posture while reducing provisioning time and costs for operators.”
The FortiGate Advantage
To protect the company’s MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation cloud platform software, NEC’s specifically chose Fortinet’s FortiGate-3000 series and FortiGate-1000 series next generation firewalls (NGFW). These network security appliances provide exceptional throughput, ultra-low latency and a wide range of configuration options for next generation environments that have requirements for lightning fast transactions, such as financial services, Voice over IP (VoIP), BYOD/Mobile and Web 2.0 applications. The broad network security capabilities of these appliances address several critical market dynamics:
· Soaring bandwidth demands due to the increasing use of content-rich social media and Web 2.0 applications
· The explosion of mobile devices accessing these applications -- increasingly through Wi-Fi connections -- that require an application firewall with the ability to process millions of connections per second
· More frequent and increasingly sophisticated attacks employing the latest detection evasion techniques being launched from the application layer
The FortiGate product family combines firewall, application control, IP Sec and SSL VPN, intrusion prevention, on-device and cloud-based sandboxing, antimalware and Web filtering into a single device with all features turned on for a single price. All FortiGate devices provide native dual-stack support for IPv6 traffic out of the box as Fortinet has been a leader in protecting IPv6 networks since 2007, achieving both IPv6-Ready and JITC certifications in 2008.
All FortiGates integrate the purpose-built FortiOS operating system with custom FortiASIC processors and the latest-generation CPUs to provide broad, high-performance security.

NEC secures real Asian expansion with 500 units for the Virtual PC Center
Strengthening NEC’s Asian sales network: Aim to retain orders from 300 companies by 2010
Tokyo, July 10, 2008 --- NEC Corporation has reinforced the international sales of its thin client Virtual PC Center by generating new worldwide orders for the system in the first half of 2008, including 500 units from 10 Japanese companies based throughout Asia. Regionally, companies across Asia are now being faced with a myriad of business challenges that include protective measures against threats to information as well as health concerns that threaten personnel. These conditions have drawn increasing attention towards the benefits of thin client systems, which concentrate assets in a central server.
The server interacts with remote devices that are free from data and/or applications, which strengthens business continuity, increases efficiency, lowers the cost of system management and improves internal controls.NEC’s thin client system, the Virtual PC Center, is capable of converting conventional PCs into virtual machines that retain user friendliness and benefit from the reliability of a small number or integrated servers.
The systems maximize IT resources and efficiency, in addition to earning high regard for domestic and international performance. The latest orders for NEC’s Virtual PC Center will offer comprehensive capabilities, dependability and highly assessed field support for companies that operate throughout Asia, including Japanese corporations located in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, China and Taiwan. Regional Asian orders of the Virtual PC Center
Thai Wire & Cable Services Co., Ltd. (TWCS) (Thailand) (note *1)
Strengthened the security of personnel and payroll information by introducing 120 thin client devices (US110) to factory staff. Services are scheduled to expand following the opening of a new factory.
Mitsiam Motors Co., Ltd. (Thailand) (note *2)
Introduced 120 office-based thin client devices (US110) to reinforce security and improve the efficiency of system management (reduced TCO). Significantly reduced the number of personnel hours required to reconfigure systems in response to an office relocation. 150 new orders are anticipated in the future.

LSI power consumption reduced by as much as 50% with new technology that "visualizes" temperature distribution
- Fundamental LSI technology for the age of multi-core devices –
Tokyo, June 27, 2008 - NEC Corporation today announced the development of an important new technology that is able to "visualize" the thermal distribution and reduce the power consumption of LSI, which has become an increasingly serious challenge as the miniaturization of LSI continues to advance. These latest developments have been demonstrated through NEC's SX-9 super computer.
The new technology features scores of thermal sensors, 1/10 the size of previously available sensors, which are internally located throughout the LSI, and convert temperature changes into digital signals that enable the heat distribution of the LSI to be "visualized" in real-time. The miniaturization of the thermal sensors enables them to be widely distributed throughout the LSI, which increases the precision of measurements.
Thanks to the development of technology that allows thermal distribution to be "visualized," independent local measures can be taken on specific regions of an LSI chip in order to control heat. This allows tasks to be delegated to less active areas of a chip, which reduces the total amount of electricity required for operations and lessens the environmental impact. Specifically, the widespread use of devices equipped with this latest technology and LSI multi-cores will result in greater optimization of clock-frequency, data processing and voltage levels, which will deliver a 20 - 50% reduction in the power consumption of LSI devices (note *1).
Please see below for detail on the primary features of this latest technology.
1) Increasing thermal sensors within LSI
The latest thermal sensors are able to calculate temperatures by measuring leakage currents from transistors through miniature conversion circuits that convert leakage currents to digital signals. The new sensors are 1/10 the size of conventional diode based sensors and they are equipped with circuits that detect and convert leakage currents to digital signals. Even if the power voltage changes while the LSI is operating, measurements remain highly accurate and errors are contained to less than 2 degrees Celsius. Moreover, only a relatively small number of the previously available, larger, thermal sensors could be placed within an LSI. Scores of the new miniature sensors may now be placed within an LSI in order to provide an accurate real-time "visualization" of a device's heat distribution.
2) Correction of temperature miscalculations caused by manufacturing variations
A conversion equation has been developed in order to measure the volume of an active LSI's leakage current and to convert it into a temperature. Temperature miscalculations may be corrected through new technologies that take one measure of each thermal sensor's leakage current at room temperature, a process that formerly required multiple measurements, to improve the accuracy of results. Until now, LSI were limited to thermal sensors that delivered temperature measurements whose margin of error exceeded several tens of degrees Celsius. The latest sensors have been dramatically improved, and now provide temperature measurements that are within 3 degrees Celsius of accuracy. Even though variations in the manufacturing of LSI can cause leakage current differences that are as much as 100 times different from one another, the latest sensors continue to deliver accurate readings.
Looking forward, as LSI perform more difficult procedures and chips equipped with large volume multi-core capabilities are used more often, both heat distribution and active core regions will continuously change. These conditions require the accurate calculation of high temperature areas, which is accomplished through chips outfitted with a large quantity of thermal sensors that are able to deliver temperature readings in real-time. Conventional thermal sensors were oversized and cumbersome, which prevented chips from being equipped with a large number of them, and inhibited a chip's ability to reliably manage temperature issues.
The high temperature of an LSI's internal regions has also brought on distrust in the deteriorating performance of transistors and wire connections. Leakage currents from LSI that rise more than 40 degrees Celsius have increased by more than 10 times, which has caused the lifetime of transistors and wiring to decrease by approximately 50%. The above factors have drawn particular attention to the importance of improving the temperature management of LSI in order to reduce electric power consumption and improve reliability.
For example, data center temperatures can now be better regulated through continuous real-time monitoring of the center's temperature distribution. This enables specific sections to be intensively ventilated or certain tasks to be designated to separate servers for processing. The high temperature management technologies not only help secure greater reliability of machinery, they also improve the effectiveness of cooling systems, which results in a more dependable and ecologically friendly product.
The technologies that allow an LSI's temperature distribution to be "visualized" are considered an essential part of the development of a "Data Center On Chip" (note *2) that will enable LSI of the future to perform similar functions as the data centers of today.
NEC will continue to pursue development of technologies that assist in the resolution of environmental challenges. Accordingly, these latest technologies promise to become an essential element to the improved performance of LSI, as well as the devices appearing in vehicles, digital AVs, networks, servers and more, which are becoming increasingly dependent on the reliability and environmentally friendly benefits of LSI.
NEC plans to formally announce these latest achievements on June 20 at the "2008 Symposia on VLSI Circuits," held in Hawaii, USA from June 18 - 20.
(note *1) Based on calculations performed by NEC on 2-core processing and power voltage control
