MIMOS TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS AWARDED TO ELEVEN TECHNOLOGY RECIPIENTS

MIMOS Technology Preview 2008 provides access to technology platforms developed by MIMOS that are ready for transfer to indigenous industries

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 JUNE 2008 – The Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), through its strategic agency MIMOS, today transferred various technology platforms to 11 technology recipients from various local industries, held in conjunction with MIMOS Technology Preview 2008.

The 11 technology recipients were identified by MOSTI, under its technology licensing programme, in line with the national mission to increase the country’s commercialization rate to at least 10% from research and development (R&D) initiatives undertaken by the public sector, as outlined in the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP).

“The technology transfer is testimony to the uptake and adoption of MOSTI technology platforms invented by researchers in MIMOS labs , which is rapidly gaining momentum, by local industries,” said Dato’ Abdul Wahab Abdullah, President & Chief Executive Officer, MIMOS.

The 11 technology recipients are:
1. Alam Teknokrat Sdn Bhd was awarded Semantic Web Portal – a platform for computer application to be meaning and knowledge-based;
2. Biforst Technology Sdn Bhd was awarded Semantic Logistic Management – a platform for computer application to be meaning and knowledge-based;
3. Bill Adam Associates Sdn Bhd was awarded Semantic Travel Recommender– a platform for computer application to be meaning and knowledge-based;
4. Ecos Sensetech Sdn Bhd was awarded MSCAN Platform for Pollution Management – MIMOS’ Wireless Sensor Network System;
5. InfoValley Life Sciences Sdn Bhd was awarded Semantic Infostiology – a platform for computer application to be meaning and knowledge-based;
6. In-Fusion Solutions Sdn Bhd was awarded Semantic Medical Informatics – a platform for computer application to be meaning and knowledge-based;
7. My Datacet Technology Sdn Bhd was awarded Intelligent Surveillance Platform for Physical Security (CCTV) – a verdant platform whereby ICT is exploited to protect digital environment from being defaced or infiltrated by sinister forces;
8. Pernec Integrated Network Systems Sdn Bhd was awarded WiWi (a hybrid solution that provides WiFi as a hotspot and WiMax as a backhaul), Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) and Semantic Technology;
9. Jaring Communications Sdn Bhd was awarded Grid Computing (a large scale computing that coordinates the sharing of complex computational power across geographical dispersed organizations on a network); and
10. FTEC System Sdn Bhd was awarded iDola (PC-based mobile computing device for the education sector) and IPv6 (next generation Internet Protocol).
11. MIMOS Smart Computing Sdn Bhd was awarded Jen-ii (PC-based computing device to bridge the digital divide)

At the handover ceremony, the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation was represented by its Deputy Minister, Fadillah Yusof.

“Today marks another significant milestone for MIMOS as we transfer the frontier technologies from our laboratories to the local industries and a further demonstration of how MIMOS is building up the technology eco-system to address the market needs and demands,” added Dato’ Wahab.

MOSTI is in the midst of finalizing other technology recipients, identified by MIMOS, for transfer of MIMOS’ technology platforms including Jen-ii and Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Sensor which are ready for commercialization.

“MOSTI will ensure that all indigenous industries benefit from the adoption of MIMOS technology platforms with the ultimate aim of moving the Malaysian ICT industry to be globally competitive players,” Dato’ Abdul Wahab said.

Through MOSTI’s technology licensing programme, MIMOS is helping to bolster the growth of globally competitive local companies and indigenous industries through applied research in frontier technologies. MIMOS’ focus is on strategic market-driven product development and advanced technology which essentially involves the development of technology platforms for commercialization by indigenous industries.

“The technology transfer process is critical for the country as it will excite the private sectors, especially the small and medium enterprise, to join hand with the government o promote the knowledge economy towards commercialization of home grown technologies” added Dato’ Abdul Wahab.

MIMOS Technology Preview 2008
MIMOS held its first Technology Preview officiated by Deputy Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation, Fadhillah Yussof, today.

The one-day forum, attended by more than 500 local industry players including potential future technology recipients, was designed as a key platform to provide access to technology platforms developed by MIMOS that are will be ready for transfer to local industry players.

This is in line with MIMOS mission pioneer innovative information and communications technologies (ICT) towards growing globally competitive indigenous industries.
“MIMOS Technology Preview is also the key platform to share the future technological developments at MIMOS and highlight recent developments that show sound commercial potential,” Dato’ Wahab said.

“This is a very important event towards the advancement of the Malaysia ICT Industry. PIKOM is proud to be the key supporter of this event”, said David Wong, Chairman of PIKOM.

MIMOS’ focus is on market-driven applied research in frontier technologies aimed at growing globally competitive indigenous industries through research collaborations between the research community and industry.
