Unisys boosts relationship with Malaysian government via ongoing operational and support contract for MyKad Malaysia

Malaysia MyKad continues to rely on Unisys expertise and proven track record for 9th consecutive year to provide continued reliability for more than 22million Malaysian citizens

June 30, 2008 – Unisys (NYSE: UIS) announced that its subsidiary Unisys MSC is about to complete a one year RM11,000 000 (US$3.5million) contract as part of Malaysia’s MyKad smartcard solution, on behalf of the government of Malaysia, marking the ninth consecutive year of the relationship.

The Malaysia MyKad is the most comprehensive multi-application smart card in use today – it uses advanced technology, including biometrics, to provide a single authentication credential for Malaysia citizens, which also enables access to bank accounts, health services, public transport and other functionalities. It is the largest deployment today of a government identity smartcard worldwide, and to date, Unisys and a consortium of companies under the MyKad project have deployed more than 22 million national ID smartcards nationwide.

Under the contract, Unisys continues to provide services that allow the MyKad application to run 24 hours, 7 days a week at the Government Service Centre datacentre and 210 branches nationwide and make the MyKad application available to support all branch requirements. This includes preventative and corrective maintenance support for hardware systems and software applications, including the Unisys ES7000 and ES2045 servers that provide the infrastructure ‘anchor’ for the MyKad. Unisys domain expertise and technical consultancy allows system upgrades and card enhancements to be carried out seamlessly.

The MyKad uses advanced chip and biometric technology, providing a high level of accuracy in identifying users, enabling more than 22 million Malaysians to transact securely and conveniently with the government and commercial businesses through the use of a single smart card.

Imbedded with state-of-the-art digital technology, the MyKad dovetails into Malaysia’s e-government strategy and provides for a host of future enhancements and add-ons to drive Malaysia’s e-government and e-commerce initiatives.

This continuing appointment follows Unisys pivotal role in the development of the MyKad project which commenced in 1999 as the master systems integrator for the MyKad implementation. As the single point of contact and reference between the Malaysian government and four other solution providers under the Government Multipurpose Card (GMPC) Consortium, Unisys domain expertise in business process re-engineering, application development and support, change management and turnkey smartcard architecture was utilised to realise the on-time delivery of the multi-purpose and highly secure MyKad.

“Unisys is a global leader when it comes to security, identity and biometrics, having played a key role in border security and international travel documentation initiatives, voter registration and driver licensing, defense and homeland security, airport and port security,” said Scott Whyman, General Manger and Vice President, Unisys Asia South. “The Malaysia MyKad is living evidence of the security, convenience and ongoing multipurpose functionality that can be provided by a robust, flexible and scaleable national identity credential.”

Tom Fernandez, Director, Public Sector of Unisys Malaysia said, “Our support for the Malaysia Government has gone from strength to strength each year. It is also strategically important for Unisys and reflects a strong international commitment to the public sector in the Asia Pacific region and worldwide. Our extended support for the Malaysia MyKad initiative reflects our dedication to the success of the MyKad project to date.”

Unisys has implemented similar biometric and identity management solutions for government agencies around the world. Examples include the U.S. Registered Traveler pilot program, the HANIS (Home Affairs National Identification System) project for the Department of Homeland Affairs in South Africa, the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship and the a six-month biometrics field trial for Citizen and Immigration Canada (CIC).
