3Com’s H3C Provides IP Networking Infrastructure for Beijing Olympic Games

MALAYSIA, 08 August 2008 – As a leading Internet architecture solution innovator based in China, H3C Technologies is actively getting itself involved in a number of the major networking infrastructure projects in Beijing, the venue city for the coming 2008 Olympic Games.

H3C has been the principal technology partner on several Olympic-related projects including a “Good Luck Beijing” pre-event in Hong Kong, the Beijing public transportation surveillance system upgrading, the new terminal building’s network for Beijing International Airport, and Sohu.com’s video-on-demand service portal.

To better host the Olympic Games, Beijing City has invested a lot into the construction of infrastructures such as the spectacular stadiums of ‘Bird’s Nest’ and the ‘Water Cube’. Meanwhile, efforts to upgrade Internet and video surveillance structures are being made to facilitate the convenience and security for all participants.

H3C offers a comprehensive line of networking solutions that deliver Olympic-quality reliability, stability and performance to several key safety and information projects. Ranging from switches to IP surveillance systems, H3C’s high-end products were able to meet the stringent requirements set by the project owners.

Beijing Capital International Airport
The Beijing Capital International Airport is the first contact point welcoming visitors from around the world to China’s first Olympic Games. Increasing the capacity of the city’s international airport was a priority, so a third terminal is being added. H3C solutions are powering a new 10G Ethernet backbone to support its routine operations, as well as real-time production and management services, including ground emergency command, airport terminal broadcasting and flight information displays.

During the planning and design of the network, H3C borrowed substantive experiences from the airport construction projects of China and other countries. The company worked closely with the airport to meet their special service requirements for different systems from departure to broadcasting, jointly improving the airport service system solution.

Beijing Public Transportation
Once in Beijing, visitors will require a safe, reliable transportation system to help get to and from the different Olympic venues. Beijing Public Transportation Group (BPT Group) worked with H3C to build an IP monitoring system to monitor bus stations and parking lots, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines, and special Olympic bus lines. With 10,000 monitoring points, the system provides real-time security monitoring for the entire transportation system, as well as several value-added services including vehicle dispatching, arrival and departure monitoring, VoIP access, office automation, IC card auto ticket examination, electronic route information and station billboards. In addition, wireless cameras will be installed on buses running some of the Olympics bus lines to ensure they meet special requirements.

With over 500 parking lots and thousands of buses, the BPT Group needed to expand their surveillance capabilities quickly and at a low cost. The H3C system integrates the monitoring of media terminals, network access, and IP storage with system management software. By basing its system on the Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON) optical transmission technology, the H3C solution allows multiple terminals to share the same line of optical fiber, greatly reducing operational and engineering costs. H3C is the first vendor to use EPON exclusively to create fully integrated, end-to-end video monitoring solutions.

“Good Luck Beijing”- Hong Kong
In preparation for the 2008 Games, 42 special “Good Luck Beijing” sporting events were held at venues across China. Hong Kong, which will be the site of the Olympic equestrian competition, held the “Good Luck Beijing” – HKSAR 10th Anniversary Cup on 11-13 August 2007. The Cup marked the first time riders from leading equestrian nations competed at an event in Hong Kong. It also provided an opportunity to test the security and emergency response during live events at 2008 Olympic venues.

H3C’s IP Video Surveillance solution (iVS) was installed at the Hong Kong Olympic Equestrian Venues in Shatin and Beas River to help ensure the security and safety of over 5,000 participants. The deployment of H3C’s iVS system for the HKSAR 10th Anniversary Cup was the first all-in-one IP surveillance solution installed in Hong Kong. “This total solution is widely used by customers in China, but H3C is the only vendor currently offering it in Hong Kong,” said Jessie Wu, President, Global Marketing & Sales, H3C.

“H3C saw a need for a total solution based on an open architecture that integrates network computers, communication systems and storage systems. All in all, IP Video Surveillance Solution offered the HKSAR 10th Anniversary Cup the ability to complete more surveillance-related tasks with higher efficiency,” said KC Leung, Head of Technology, Equestrian Events (Hong Kong) of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad Company Limited.

SOHU
China’s many avid Olympics fans will have unparalleled access to real-time news and video clips via SOHU’s H3C-powered video-on-demand (VOD) “Watch-and-Listen” blogsite. As the official Chinese website of the Beijing Olympics, SOHU is responsible for delivering up-to-the-minute news, results and footage to the Internet. H3C’s IToIP solutions enable SOHU’s users to receive follow the exciting sports action anywhere, anytime from their PC’s or mobile devices.

Built on the Storage Area Network (SAN) storage architecture, the H3C network storage solution enables fast access to mass data (video in three seconds) and centralized management of storage devices for the SOHU “Watch-and-Listen” blogs. The unified Web interface will automatically raise an alarm once the system goes faulty, allowing network administrator to manage devices using CallHome feature, which significantly shortens the downtime and secure high-speed video download, making the VOD service more reliable and the storage system expansion more cost-efficient.

H3C’s work on these Olympic projects further confirms its international leadership in IP technology solutions. By developing cutting-edge technologies and taking advantage of open architectures, H3C’s IP-based storage and networking solutions deliver greater flexibility, performance and reliability to meet stringent international standards for quality.
