P1 and eBay Partner to Offer Free E-Commerce Training for Malaysian Entrepreneurs

Kicks off First Joint Initiative with the Wireless@KL e-Commerce Month

Petaling Jaya, November 19 2008 – Packet One (P1), Malaysia’s premier WiMAX converged telco and eBay, are partnering through various initiatives to enable local entrepreneurs to conduct e-commerce, using high-speed internet connectivity.

Their first joint initiative is the Wireless@KL e-Commerce Month, where certified eBay Education Specialists are offering free training workshops on how to leverage the eBay global marketplace and make their products available to 85.7 million users worldwide, with just a laptop and internet connection. The eight workshops are currently being held at popular Wireless@KL locations in the city centre over four weeks, with the first session being held on 12 November 2008 at Chinoz on the Park, Suria KLCC Shopping Mall. The final two sessions will be held on 3 and 6 December 2008 at The Apartment, Suria KLCC Shopping Mall. “Both eBay and P1 share a mission to improve the quality of life for all Malaysians. A great way to do this is through educating them about business opportunities available on the internet and providing the platform and necessary tools to take the advantage of these opportunities,” said Michael Lai, CEO of P1. “Our dream has been to give all Malaysians the power of the Internet and all the benefits it brings, because we believe that when you give people the means, their imagination soar.”

“More than 100,000 new members have registered on eBay.com.my since November last year, which indicates that more Malaysians are becoming comfortable with trading online and are tapping on the boundless opportunities that eBay provides,” said Allis Ghim, Director at eBay.. “We are pleased to work with P1 to continue to promote and enable e-commerce for Malaysian users and are confident that they will benefit from the speed and convenience of WiMAX broadband to launch their eBay business.

Nurul Shaza Nazmin, a 21-year old student from a local university attended the workshop because she was curious about conducting business online. “I would recommend this workshop to other fellow university students who have this same interest,” she said.

James Chong, a 41-year old journalist, also felt that the workshop was a valuable experience. “It was an eye-opener – I didn’t know you could sell so many items on eBay. This tie-up with P1 and eBay was a great initiative to build up e-commerce, and I hope to see more of this in the future.”

Tan Chee Peng, a 59-year old director of a manufacturing company, also echoed James Chong’s sentiments. “It’s exciting, and I’d like to see greater interactions between P1 and eBay in the future – especially in terms of the Wireless@KL initiative.”
