Motorola Penang Celebrates 35 years in Malaysia with Children’s Academic Excellence Awards

Company unveils CSR projects with the theme “Giving Back to Our Society”

Penang, Malaysia – 4 June 2009 – Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced that its manufacturing site in Penang, Motorola Technology Sdn Bhd is celebrating 35 years in Malaysia, making it among the earliest technology companies to establish manufacturing facilities in the country.

In line with the anniversary celebrations, Motorola plans to collaborate with various organizations such as the Penang Development Skill Centre, Universiti Sains Malaysia and local government authorities to introduce a series of corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects with the theme “Giving Back to Our Society” aimed at expressing the company’s appreciation to the community.
These CSR projects include various environment conservation and community relations activities for both internal employees and external community groups that will begin from June – December 2009. (please refer details of activities on Appendix 1)

At the event, Motorola also presented an appreciation award to various industry partners ranging from government sectors to academic institutions such as the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority, Department of Environment, Customs Department, Penang Development Corporation, Royal Malaysia Police, University Sains Malaysia, and Penang Skill Development Centre in recognition of their support throughout the years.

As part of the company’s sustainable practices within the facility, Motorola plans to firstly remove and replace its foam food packaging at its employees’ cafeterias with recyclable or reusable packaging following a similar initiative implemented in US.

“Motorola is committed to reducing the environmental footprint of its operations and to protecting the health and safety of its employees. In doing so, it helps to reduce costs, improve operational efficiency and meet the expectations of our stakeholders,” Mr. Yew Tian Tek, managing director, Motorola Technology Sdn Bhd said.

“We are proud to be a member of the Malaysian landscape, and be counted as part of the Penang community. Over the years, we have partnered with the government, business and community leaders to ensure that our contributions to Penang are linked to building sustainability and a better lifestyle for all,” Mr. Yew said.

Motorola in Penang is now a major site for its operations in Asia Pacific, home to the company’s largest research and development and manufacturing facility of two-way radio products in Asia. It is also the only fully-fledge design centre for two-way radios in the world.


Children represent the future

In conjunction with the company’s 35th anniversary celebrations, Motorola awarded 85 students who are children of Motorola employees with prizes totaling RM36,250 in recognition of their achievements for 2008.

An initiative that was introduced in 1994, The Children’s Academic Excellence Awards recognizes children of Motorola employees who excel in any of the four Malaysian Schools Exams (UPSR, PMR, SPM and STPM). Outstanding students will receive awards based on their results, as recognition of their hard work, tenacity and academic achievements. To date, Motorola has awarded over 600 children, bringing the total value of awards to RM241,050. (please refer details of awards recipients on Appendix 2)

Each child must fulfill the minimum requirement of ‘A’ grades for each of the respective exam categories in order to qualify for the awards. The available prize awards are:

4As in UPSR : Sijil Simpanan Premium worth RM250 and souvenir
7As in PMR : Sijil Simpanan Premium worth RM500 and souvenir
7As in SPM : Sijil Simpanan Premium RM800 and souvenir
3As in STPM : Sijil Simpanan Premium worth RM1,000 and souvenir

“Beyond straight academic grades, however, we should remember those important soft skills that leaders in today’s world need to be successful. Academic achievements and great leadership qualities when combined will help our children realize their potential,” he said.

“Motorola has been a trusted technology leader, long-term investor and talent developer in the country for 35 years and we have a responsibility to all communities in which we operate, so that all parties can derive positive outcomes in terms of commercial, economic, national and social benefits,” he added, “We are building capacity for future generations of Penang and Malaysia, and we look forward to another 35 years and more in this country”.
