Sun Opens 2009 JavaOne Conference with Debut of Java Store, a Global Marketplace for Cutting-edge Java Applications

(NASDAQ: JAVA) President and CEO Jonathan Schwartz and a host of technology industry leaders kicked off the 2009 JavaOne conference earlier this week with a showcase of Java innovations that continued to create new revenue opportunities, business models and applications that can help change the world. Among the innovations that was introduced at the 2009 JavaOne conference were the new Java Store that will enable companies and developers to distribute content to the estimated 800 million Java desktop users worldwide, as well as key updates to its JavaFX and GlassFish Portfolio software. In addition, Sun also previewed the upcoming versions of Java Platform Standard Edition 7 (Java SE 7) and Java Platform Enterprise Edition 6 (Java EE 6).

Sun chose the 2009 JavaOne conference to debut the Java Store, a consumer-facing storefront enabling the discovery and purchase of Java and JavaFX applications. It offers a nearly unequaled distribution channel for reaching potential customers and driving revenue through the sale of innovative new content. New Features and Updates Added to JavaFX and GlassFish Portfolio Software
Sun also announced numerous updates and enhancements to its suite of Java developer tools and technologies, including:
· JavaFX 1.2, which includes new cross platform User Interface (UI) controls, faster application start-up, streaming media support and other performance enhancements across desktop, browser and mobile. In addition, JavaFX TV and the Java FX Authoring Tool were previewed, extending the JavaFX vision to bring rich and expressive interactive content to the TV and set-top box environments and allow designers and web developers to visually create JavaFX applications. Keynote Highlights
· A number of industry leaders had shared the main stage during the opening session of the 2009 JavaOne conference demonstrating how Java technology plays an essential role in their businesses' technical roadmaps and product offerings.
· James Barrese, vice president of architecture, platforms and systems at eBay, discussed how eBay has leveraged the Java platform to build the world's largest marketplace.
· Alan Brenner, senior vice president of BlackBerry platforms at RIM, shared how Java helps power its suite of devices, including the BlackBerry Curve, which outsold all other smartphones in the U.S. during the last calendar quarter.
· Don Ekland, executive vice president of advanced technologies at Sony talked about Sony's work with Java on the Blu-ray platform.
· Lowell McAdam, president and CEO of Verizon Wireless, outlined his company's strategic decision to deploy Java Platform Micro Edition (Java ME) -based services in its network and offer Java-based services and applications to its subscribers.
· Diane Bryant, CIO of Intel discussed Intel's work with Sun in integrating Java technology on its next-generation of processors.
· Sun Co-founder and Chairman of the Board, Scott McNealy, and Oracle CEO, Larry Ellison, closed the opening session by discussing Java's role in computing - demonstrating yet again that the Java community and the innovations it delivers are truly changing our world.
