New “Bald Eagle” platform delivers unmatched compute and graphics performance targeting gaming machines, medical imaging, digital signage and other embedded applications
Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur — May 20, 2014 — AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series accelerated processing unit (APU) and CPU family (previously codenamed “Bald Eagle”) for embedded applications. The new solutions are targeted at gaming machines, medical imaging, digital signage, industrial control and automation (IC&A), communications and networking infrastructure that require industry-leading compute and graphics processing technology.
“When it comes to compute performance, graphics performance and performance-per-watt, the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series family is unique in the embedded market,” said Scott Aylor, corporate vice president and general manager, AMD Embedded Solutions. “The addition of HSA, GCN and power management features enables our customers to create a new world of intelligent, interactive and immersive embedded devices.”
The 2nd generation AMD R-series APU and CPU solutions are designed for mid- to high-end visual and parallel compute-intensive embedded applications with support for Linux, RTOS and Windows operating systems. The new solutions range from 2.2–3.6 GHz CPU frequency with max boost, based on AMD’s latest CPU architecture (codenamed: “Steamroller”) and 533–686 MHz GPU frequency based on AMD’s latest Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, designed to advance the visual growth and parallel processing capabilities of embedded applications.
Industry-First Features, Benefits and Support
Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA): The 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series APU is the first embedded processor to incorporate HSA features, enabling applications to distribute workloads to run on the best compute element – e.g., CPU, GPU or a specialized accelerator such as video decode – for up to 44 percent more 3-D graphics performance1 and up to 46 percent more compute performance than comparable Intel Haswell Core-i CPUs2.
Open-source Linux development: As a gold-level member of the Yocto Project™, a Linux Foundation Collaboration Project, and as part of a recent multiyear agreement with Mentor Graphics, embedded systems developers now have access to customized embedded Linux development and commercial support on the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series family through Mentor Embedded Linux and Sourcery™ CodeBench, as well as Mentor Embedded Linux Lite available at no cost.
Embedded-specific features: The 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series family is specifically designed for embedded applications with industry-leading, 10-year longevity3, dual-channel memory with error-correcting code (ECC), DDR3-2133 support and configurable TDP for system design flexibility to optimize the processor at a lower TDP.
Target Markets
Visual Embedded: For embedded applications like gaming machines and digital signage that provide immersive and interactive visual experiences, AMD customers can achieve up to 64 percent more 3-D graphics performance than a standalone 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series APU4, and greater flexibility and scalability with support for up to nine independent displays and 4K resolution with the combination of the newly launched AMD Embedded Radeon™ E8860 discrete GPU.
Medical Imaging: The 2nd generation AMD R-series APU is also ideal for clinical and field medical imaging applications across portable, 3-D and 4-D ultrasound, low-dose X-ray, and imaging-assisted surgical systems. The new AMD Embedded R-series APUs deliver high image transformation performance and low latencies in a low-power and highly integrated solution for medical imaging device vendors looking to help reduce size, weight, complexity and system cost. The combination of high compute performance and low memory access latency afforded by hUMA, as well as high graphics performance in the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series platform accelerate image transformation and deliver excellent image rendering to enable next-generation ultrasound applications to help diagnose and treat patients.
Communications and Networking Infrastructure: For non-visual applications, the advanced parallel-compute graphics engine in the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series APU provides a highly unique heterogeneous compute platform for control plane switching and routing applications. Use of both OpenCL™ and OpenGL standards enables Adobe Photoshop CC to directly tap the compute and graphics processing capabilities of AMD FirePro™ Professional Graphics, AMD Radeon™ Graphics, and AMD A-Series APUs to unlock new levels of performance in the Smart Sharpen filter, and provide highly responsive, visually accurate experiences for the new 3D printing workflows, and transformations such as Perspective Warp.

The new updated version of the Smart Sharpen feature leverages the power of OpenCL parallel processing to take direct advantage of AMD GPUs and APUs to accelerate the entire Smart Sharpen pipeline—including the broad palette of user-controlled options for achieving perfect results such as Amount, Radius, Reduce Noise, and algorithm choice. AMD’s latest graphics technology can increase application performance up to 11 times the performance of non-OpenCL implementations and enables a lightning-fast editing experience, even with large images.
The latest version of Photoshop CC also brings new OpenGL pipeline support in AMD APUs and GPUs to enhance the responsiveness and display quality for new, high-value features including:

AMD UNVEILS SERVER STRATEGY AND ROADMAP
Best-in-class ARM CPUs and leading x86 CPUs and APUs for enterprise and data center servers
MALAYSIA, Kuala Lumpur, June 18, 2013 — AMD (NYSE: AMD) today publicly disclosed its strategy and roadmap to recapture market share in enterprise and data center servers by unveiling innovative products that address key technologies and meet the requirements of the fastest-growing data center and cloud computing workloads.
Additionally, AMD revealed details of its 2014 server portfolio including best-in-class Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), two- and four-socket CPUs, and details on what it expects to be the industry’s premier ARM server processor. This is on the heels of announcing the general availability of the AMD Opteron™ X-Series processor, code named “Kyoto,” which dominates the small-core server market on every performance benchmark. These forthcoming AMD Opteron™ processors bring important innovations to the rapidly changing compute market, including integrated CPU and GPU compute (APU); high core-count ARM servers for high-density compute in the data center; and substantial improvements in compute per-watt per-dollar and total cost of ownership.
In 2014, AMD will set the bar in power-efficient server compute with the industry’s premier ARM server CPU. The 64-bit CPU, code named “Seattle,” is based on ARM Cortex™-A57 cores and is expected to provide category-leading throughput as well as setting the bar in performance-per-watt. AMD will also deliver a best-in-class APU, code named “Berlin.” “Berlin” is an x86 CPU and APU, based on a new generation of cores named “Steamroller.” Designed to double the performance of the recently available “Kyoto” part, “Berlin” will offer extraordinary compute-per-watt that will enable massive rack density. The third processor announced today is code named “Warsaw,” AMD’s next-generation 2P/4P offering. It is optimized to handle the heavily virtualized workloads found in enterprise environments including the more complex compute needs of data analytics, xSQL and traditional databases. “Warsaw” will provide significantly improved performance-per-watt over today’s AMD Opteron™ 6300 family.
Seattle
“Seattle” will be the industry’s only 64-bit ARM-based server SoC from a proven server processor supplier. “Seattle” is an 8- and then 16-core CPU based on the ARM Cortex-A57 core and is expected to run at or greater than 2 GHz. The “Seattle” processor is expected to offer 2-4X the performance of AMD’s recently announced AMD Opteron X-Series processor with significant improvement in compute-per-watt. It will deliver 128GB DRAM support, extensive offload engines for better power efficiency and reduced CPU loading, server caliber encryption, and compression and legacy networking including integrated 10GbE. It will be the first processor from AMD to integrate AMD’s advanced Freedom™ Fabric for dense compute systems directly onto the chip. AMD plans to sample “Seattle” in the first quarter of 2014 with production in the second half of the year.
Berlin
“Berlin” is an x86-based processor that will be available both as a CPU and APU. The processor boasts four next-generation “Steamroller” cores and will offer almost 8X the gigaflops per-watt compared to current AMD Opteron™ 6386SE processor. It will be the first server APU built on AMD’s revolutionary Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA), which enables uniform memory access for the CPU and GPU and makes programming as easy as C++. “Berlin” will offer extraordinary compute per-watt that enables massive rack density. It is expected to be available in the first half of 2014.
Warsaw
“Warsaw” is an enterprise server CPU optimized to deliver unparalleled performance and total cost of ownership for two- and four-socket servers. Designed for enterprise workloads, it will offer improved performance-per-watt, which drives down the cost of owning a “Warsaw”-based server while enabling seamless migration from the AMD Opteron 6300 Series family. It is a fully compatible socket with identical software certifications, making it ideal for the AMD Open 3.0 Server – the industry’s most cost effective Open Compute platform. It is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2014.

AMD Boosts Its AMD Fusion APUs for Notebooks, Ultrathins, All-in-Ones and Desktops
KUALA LUMPUR, 23 August 2011 — Following the launch of AMD A-Series Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) last Tuesday, AMD (NYSE: AMD) updated its award-winning C- and E-Series APUs yesterday for ultrathin and value notebooks, netbooks, all-in-ones and desktop PCs with top-of-the-line features. The updated APUs deliver:
· Enhanced HD graphics capabilities;
· Performance boosts with enhanced memory;
· DisplayPort ++ for connecting to any HDMI or DisplayPort-enabled monitor or TV;
· 12 hours of resting battery life on a single charge for the mobile platform – a nearly four hour increase over previous platforms[i].

AMD has shipped more than 12 million APUs, and sold more than five million of the popular C- and E-Series APUs in Q2 2011 alone. The updated AMD C- and E-Series APUs meet the needs of consumers who want fast and Brilliant HD streaming video, sharp photos, life-like gaming through powerful DirectX®11-capable discrete-level graphics and a parallel processing engine, as well as all-day battery life[ii].
Additionally, the updated E-Series APUs feature:
