AMD Embeds Intelligent, Interactive and Immersive Experiences With 2nd Generation AMD Embedded R-Series APUs and CPUs

New “Bald Eagle” platform delivers unmatched compute and graphics performance targeting  gaming machines, medical imaging, digital signage and other embedded applications

Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur — May 20, 2014 — AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series accelerated processing unit (APU) and CPU family (previously codenamed “Bald Eagle”) for embedded applications. The new solutions are targeted at gaming machines, medical imaging, digital signage, industrial control and automation (IC&A), communications and networking infrastructure that require industry-leading compute and graphics processing technology.

“When it comes to compute performance, graphics performance and performance-per-watt, the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series family is unique in the embedded market,” said Scott Aylor, corporate vice president and general manager, AMD Embedded Solutions. “The addition of HSA, GCN and power management features enables our customers to create a new world of intelligent, interactive and immersive embedded devices.”

The 2nd generation AMD R-series APU and CPU solutions are designed for mid- to high-end visual and parallel compute-intensive embedded applications with support for Linux, RTOS and Windows operating systems. The new solutions range from 2.2–3.6 GHz CPU frequency with max boost, based on AMD’s latest CPU architecture (codenamed: “Steamroller”) and 533–686 MHz GPU frequency based on AMD’s latest Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, designed to advance the visual growth and parallel processing capabilities of embedded applications.

Industry-First Features, Benefits and Support
Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA): The 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series APU is the first embedded processor to incorporate HSA features, enabling applications to distribute workloads to run on the best compute element – e.g., CPU, GPU or a specialized accelerator such as video decode – for up to 44 percent more 3-D graphics performance1 and up to 46 percent more compute performance than comparable Intel Haswell Core-i CPUs2.

Open-source Linux development: As a gold-level member of the Yocto Project™, a Linux Foundation Collaboration Project, and as part of a recent multiyear agreement with Mentor Graphics, embedded systems developers now have access to customized embedded Linux development and commercial support on the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series family through Mentor Embedded Linux and Sourcery™ CodeBench, as well as Mentor Embedded Linux Lite available at no cost.

Embedded-specific features: The 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series family is specifically designed for embedded applications with industry-leading, 10-year longevity3, dual-channel memory with error-correcting code (ECC), DDR3-2133 support and configurable TDP for system design flexibility to optimize the processor at a lower TDP.

Target Markets
Visual Embedded: For embedded applications like gaming machines and digital signage that provide immersive and interactive visual experiences, AMD customers can achieve up to 64 percent more 3-D graphics performance than a standalone 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series APU4, and greater flexibility and scalability with support for up to nine independent displays and 4K resolution with the combination of the newly launched AMD Embedded Radeon™ E8860 discrete GPU.

Medical Imaging: The 2nd generation AMD R-series APU is also ideal for clinical and field medical imaging applications across portable, 3-D and 4-D ultrasound, low-dose X-ray, and imaging-assisted surgical systems. The new AMD Embedded R-series APUs deliver high image transformation performance and low latencies in a low-power and highly integrated solution for medical imaging device vendors looking to help reduce size, weight, complexity and system cost. The combination of high compute performance and low memory access latency afforded by hUMA, as well as high graphics performance in the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series platform accelerate image transformation and deliver excellent image rendering to enable next-generation ultrasound applications to help diagnose and treat patients.

Communications and Networking Infrastructure: For non-visual applications, the advanced parallel-compute graphics engine in the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series APU provides a highly unique heterogeneous compute platform for control plane switching and routing applications. With up to 66 percent more compute performance than the previous generation AMD Embedded R-series APU,5 the high-performance GPU enables acceleration of parallelizable functions such as deep packet inspection, encryption or decryption, search, and compression or decompression allowing more CPU headroom for customers to help increase feature velocity.

Combining category-leading compute performance1,2 with unique features and rich user interactions, the 2014 AMD Mainstream and Low-Power Mobile APUs (formerly codenamed “Beema” and “Mullins,” respectively) are the ideal choice for consumer and commercial client devices alike. These new mobile APUs feature up to four newly-designed x86 CPU cores with updated, industry-leading AMD Radeon™ graphics and a hardware-level data security solution based on the ARM® Cortex®-A5, all on a single, power-sipping system-on-chip (SoC). Products based on these new APUs are already announced by Lenovo and Samsung, with many more expected on-shelf in time for the 2014 back-to-school shopping season.

The 2014 AMD Mainstream and Low-Power Mobile APUs are designed for consumer and commercial mobile devices of all shapes and sizes, from fanless tablets to 2-in-1s like detachable and convertible notebooks, to small-screen and ultrathin laptops. They feature up to four x86 “Puma+” CPU cores and AMD Radeon™ R Series graphics based on Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, which enables fast performance, outstanding image quality and low power consumption. Enhanced Security
And, marking AMD’s first implementation of ARM-based technology into processors designed for consumer and commercial client devices, the 2014 AMD Mainstream and Low-Power APUs feature an AMD-developed platform security processor (PSP) based on the ARM Cortex-A5 featuring ARM TrustZone® technology for enhanced data security. These are the first and only x86 processors available to integrate an ARM core for security. The integrated PSP taps into the open standards-based ARM TrustZone ecosystem and partitions the new processors into two “virtual CPUs” – a “secure world” and a “normal world” based on the type of data being processed – and ensures secure storage and processing of sensitive data and trusted apps including online payments, digital rights management and enterprise- and web-based services.

AMD Introduces New Socketed AMD Sempron and AMD Athlon APU Products with AM1 Platform

Targets High Growth Markets with SOC Quad Platform for High-Performance/Low-Power Workloads

MALAYSIA, Kuala Lumpur — April 9, 2014 — AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced global availability of its new AM1 platform featuring  quad-core and dual-core variants of the AMD APU codenamed “Kabini” into the component channel for system builders. The AM1 platform, branded with the AMD Athlon™ and AMD Sempron™ APU brands will deliver award-winning Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture and “Jaguar” CPU cores on motherboards from the leading manufacturers. AMD Athlon™ 5150/5350 and AMD Sempron ™ 2650/3850 APUs provide consumers a balanced computing experience on a socketed upgradable platform.

AMD Demonstrates Full Support for New DirectX 12 at Game Developer Conference

Full DirectX 12 compatibility promised for the award-winning Graphics Core Next architecture

MALAYSIA, Kuala Lumpur — Mar. 20, 2014 — Today, AMD (NYSE: AMD) announced support for Microsoft® and its revamped graphics application programming interface, DirectX® 12, a new “console-like” version of the graphics API that has inspired PC gaming for nearly two decades.  During the Microsoft®-sponsored panel, DirectX: Evolving Microsoft's Graphics Platform, AMD revealed that it will support DirectX® 12 on all AMD Radeon™ GPUs that feature the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture.

AMD will support and collaborate with Microsoft® on the development of the generational advancement of the API, to continue to improve the experience for both developers and end users.

AMD’s Mantle API Adopted by Crytek

Another milestone for the Mantle graphics API has been reached with the addition of Crytek and its game development engine, CRYENGINE

MALAYSIA, Kuala Lumpur — Mar. 19, 2014 — AMD (NYSE: AMD) this week announced that Crytek and AMD have entered into a technology partnership that will add native Mantle graphics API support to CRYENGINE®. CRYENGINE is the latest iteration of the industry-leading game engine that has powered Crytek gaming titles since 2004.

AMD’s Mantle API makes creating games for the PC more efficient than ever. Launched in September 2013, Mantle works by streamlining communication between a gamer’s CPU and GPU. By alleviating communication bottlenecks and making efficient use of existing PC hardware, Mantle helps improve overall game performance.

AMD to Accelerate the ARM Server Ecosystem with the First ARM-based CPU and Development Platform from a Server Processor Vendor

Also Announces ARM-based Open Compute Micro-Server Board and OCP Contribution

MALAYSIA, Kuala Lumpur — Jan. 28, 2014 — Open Compute Summit V – AMD (NYSE: AMD) today added a major new milestone to its list of seminal developments in server technology. The company displayed a comprehensive development platform for its first 64-bit ARM®-based server CPU, fabricated using 28 nanometer process technology, the first from an established server vendor. AMD also announced the imminent sampling of the ARM-based processor, named the AMD Opteron™ A1100 Series, and a development platform, which includes an evaluation board and a comprehensive software suite. In addition, AMD announced that it would be contributing to the Open Compute Project a new micro-server design using the AMD Opteron A-Series, as part of the common slot architecture specification for motherboards dubbed “Group Hug.”

The AMD Opteron A-Series processor, codenamed “Seattle,” will sample this quarter along with a development platform that will make software design on the industry’s premier ARM–based server CPU quick and easy. AMD is collaborating with industry leaders to enable a robust 64-bit software ecosystem for ARM-based designs from compilers and simulators to hypervisors, operating systems and application software, in order to address key workloads in Web-tier and storage data center environments. The AMD Opteron A-Series development platform will be supported by a broad set of tools and software including a standard UEFI boot and Linux environment based on the Fedora Project, a Red Hat-sponsored, community-driven Linux distribution.

AMD Appoints David Bennett as Asia Pacific-Japan Region Lead

MALAYSIA, Kuala Lumpur ─ Dec. 5, 2013 ─ AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that David Bennett has been appointed corporate vice president of its Asia Pacific-Japan (APJ) Mega Region, reporting to senior vice president and chief sales officer John Byrne. In this role, Bennett will be responsible for leading AMD’s operations and sales efforts across the region in countries including Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Bennett has been with AMD for more than six years, holding a number of key global sales roles. Most recently, he led AMD’s growth in client, server and embedded platforms as worldwide sales director for the HP account and was instrumental to winning the single largest commercial client tender in the company’s history. Earlier, Bennett served as leader for AMD’s Canadian Consumer Retail business from 2010 to 2012, where he strengthened key customer relationships and helped AMD secure a dominant market share position in the consumer space.

Cloud Imperium Games, Eidos-Montréal™, a part of the Square Enix® Group, and Oxide Games are the latest game developers to join AMD in optimizing the way PC games are developed to extract maximum performance from a modern graphics architecture that spans desktop PCs, notebooks and consumer devices like tablets.
