Kaspersky Lab Discovered and Blocked Zero-day Vulnerability in Adobe Flash Player

Petaling Jaya, April 30 - Kaspersky Lab’s heuristic detection protection subsystem has successfully blocked attacks via a zero-day vulnerability in Adobe Flash software. Kaspersky Lab researchers discovered this loophole, which was targeted by exploits distributed via a legitimate government website created to collect public complaints about breaches of the law in the Middle Eastern country.

In mid-April Kaspersky Lab experts analyzing data from Kaspersky Security Network, discovered a previously unknown exploit. On closer examination it turned out that the exploit was using a previously unknown vulnerability in the popular multimedia software Adobe Flash Player. The vulnerability exists in Pixel Bender – an old component, designed for video and photo processing.

Further investigation found that exploits were distributed from a website created in 2011 by the Syrian Ministry of Justice to enable people to lodge complaints about breaches of the law. We believe the attack was designed to target Syrian dissidents complaining about the government.

Kaspersky Lab experts discovered two kinds of exploits in total, with differences in shell code (a small piece of code used as the payload when exploiting a software vulnerability).

“The first exploit showed rather primitive download-and-execute payload behavior but the second one tried to interact with Cisco Meeting Place Express Add-In – a special Flash plugin for co-working, in particular, for joint viewing of documents and pictures on a presenter’s PC desktop. This plugin is completely legitimate, but in these particular circumstances it could be used as a spying tool. Moreover, we discovered, that this ‘second’ exploit works only if a certain version of Flash Player and CMP Add-In are installed on the attacked PC. This means that attackers probably aimed at a very limited list of victims,” said Vyacheslav Zakorzhevsky, Vulnerability Research Group Manager at Kaspersky Lab.

Immediately after discovering the first exploit, Kaspersky Lab specialists contacted Adobe representatives to inform them of the new vulnerability. After examining the information provided by Kaspersky Lab, Adobe acknowledged that the vulnerability has a zero-day status, and developed a patch which is now available on Adobe website. The CVE number of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0515.

“Although we’ve only seen a limited number attempts to exploit this vulnerability, we’re strongly recommending users to update their versions of Adobe Flash Player software. It is possible that once information about this vulnerability becomes known, criminals would try to reproduce these new exploits or somehow get the existing variants and use it in other attacks. Even with a patch available, cybercriminals would expect to profit from this vulnerability because a worldwide update of software as widely used, as Flash Player will take some time. Unfortunately this vulnerability will be dangerous for a while,” said Vyacheslav Zakorzhevsky.

It is the second time this year that Kaspersky Lab specialists have discovered a zero-day vulnerability. In February, the company’s specialists discovered CVE-2014-0497 – another zero-day vulnerability in Adobe Flash Player, which allows attackers to stealthily infect victim PCs.

Heuristic Detection Subsystem

The heuristic detection subsystem is a part of the antivirus engine used in multiple Kaspersky Lab products for home and corporate users, such as Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Kaspersky Internet Security, Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business and others. Just like a traditional antivirus this system uses a database of signatures to detect malicious software. But while antivirus technology usually requires a signature for each individual piece of malware, no matter how closely related, heuristic detection can cover whole ranges of malicious programs. It does this using heuristics – special signatures that detect not only individual pieces of malware but also the whole collections of malicious programs grouped according to a list of special features. The heuristic signature, which covered the behavior of the new zero-day exploit in Adobe Flash, was added to Kaspersky Lab databases as early as January.

Moreover, during a special test conducted by Kaspersky Lab’ specialists it was discovered that exploits using CVE-2014-0515 are detected accurately by Kaspersky Lab’s Automatic Exploit Prevention technology – another powerful tool to detect unknown threats.

In November 2013 the same technology successfully blocked attacks using a zero-day vulnerability in Microsoft Office software. Also at the end of 2012 it proactively blocked several malicious components, which – as it was discovered later – belonged to Red October, a large-scale cyber-espionage campaign detected by Kaspersky Lab researchers in January 2013.

Adobe Study Reveals Strong Correlation between Employability and Creativity

Strong correlation emerges between employability and creativity as 47 percent strongly agree that students with digital media skills have an edge in the job market

Over 58 percent strongly agree that basic digital media skills are essential for the 21st century workforce

Gaps identified in the current education system as 87 percent of respondents feel it does not place enough emphasis on creative expression

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — 1st April, 2014 — Adobe today unveiled the findings of its ‘Education, Creativity and Employability’ study at the 9th annual Adobe Education Leadership Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 31st March -2nd April, 2014.  1531 educators representing 13 countries across Asia Pacific were surveyed with an aim to gauge the importance of creativity in education and its role in building a digitally able workforce.

The study revealed interesting points on the ubiquity of creativity in the classroom. Educators across Asia Pacific were unanimous in their agreement that creative expression is a must for all students regardless of their stream of study. An overwhelming 97 percent of respondents feel that creative tools help students to better grasp theoretical concepts and enhance their overall understanding in the classroom.

This year’s study also revealed the growing awareness among educators that basic digital media skills are an essential requirement for the 21st century workforce with 58 percent strongly agreeing to this statement. Further, 47 percent of respondents agreed that students proficient in digital media skills have a better chance of being recruited, giving them a competitive edge over their less skilled counterparts.

However, the study also highlighted the gaps in the current education system as 87 percent noted that it does not place enough emphasis on creative expression. This clearly implies that students are not gaining the necessary skills required for the modern workplace.

Commenting on the study Peter McAlpine, Senior Director, Education, Adobe Asia Pacific said, “Today we understand that the convergence of academic and creative competencies is helping create new opportunities for a whole new digital workforce. However, as the study highlights, our challenge now is to bridge the gap that currently exists in our education system and to bring the two closer. It’s time for us as educators to come together and  define how to enable this shift, ensuring that students are not only equipped to be consumers of digital content but also to be creators of that content.”

COUNTRY COMPARISONS ACROSS ASIA PACIFIC
When compared for their responses across a variety of parameters, more educators in Australia and South Korea indicated that there is a gap in the current education system when it comes to integrating creativity into academics. However, while respondents in Australia seem convinced about the role of creative tools and the importance of digital media skills, South Korean respondents were not as strongly convinced about these aspects. Educators in countries of Southeast Asia are not as negative about the ability of current education systems to integrate creativity into classroom instruction.

Indian educators strongly support the need for both creative expression in the classroom as well as the use of creative tools to clarify concepts.

Educators from Greater China and South Korea are not as strongly supportive as the rest of APAC on the need for basic digital media skills in the workforce, pointing to some cultural differences when it comes to job market expectations. The grid below provides the details:

Commenting on the increasing interplay between creativity and employability, Richard Olsen, Education Consultant from Australia said, “Being a creative person changes everything: it enables us to tackle more complex problems, and it allows us to boldly approach problems outside of the scope of our experience. This is just as well because our global workforce is increasingly moving from muscle jobs to smart jobs. Smart jobs, that require creativity at their core. My hope is that schools will continue to place a higher priority on nurturing creativity so that their students may realise their full potential.”

The study on ‘Education, Creativity and Employability’ is based on an extensive survey of educators across Asia Pacific covering 13 countries (Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam). The Internet-based survey was carried out from 7th March to 18th March, 2014. The profile of respondents included educators in the K-12 and higher education segment.

Malaysia Airlines Fuels Digital Business Transformation with Adobe Marketing Cloud

KUALA LUMPUR – February 10, 2014 – Adobe announced today that Malaysia Airlines, the Malaysian national carrier and Asia’s Leading Airline at the 2013 World Travel Awards, has signed a major deal to implement a mission-critical technology refresh, introducing Adobe Marketing Cloud and Adobe Creative Cloud in an enterprise licensing agreement that is one of the company’s largest in Asia Pacific to date.

In a highly competitive tender that commenced in April 2013, MAS evaluated bids from incumbents and some of the industry’s leading solution and point product vendors, completing extensive assessment to determine the best technology to underpin their business-wide transformation.

Mr Dean Dacko, Chief Marketing Officer, Malaysia Airlines, said 15 stakeholders across the business were involved in the selection process. “With a project of this size and complexity, it’s critical to engage stakeholders from across the business. The marketing department worked closely with IT, Sales, Customer Experience and Product among others to define needs, and evaluate tenders.”

“We selected five solutions from Adobe Marketing Cloud, including Adobe Target, Adobe Social, Adobe Media Optimizer, Adobe Analytics and Adobe Experience Manager. We’ll also be deploying managed services for Experience Manager. The solution provided us with the most intuitive, easy-to-use user interface along with deep analytic power and robust delivery.”

According to Mr Dacko, the implementation will roll out in three phases, delivering the foundation to align digital marketing and customer engagement across all the company’s platforms and brands, including Firefly, MAS Wings, MAS Cargo and loyalty program Enrich. “We’re undertaking a huge digital marketing platform consolidation across the group over the next three years,” said Mr Dacko.

“The integration of off-line customer data from sources such as our loyalty program and customer call center, together with digital records and footprint, will give us access to a single customer view. This is going to allow us to deliver a whole new level of customer experience, through more personalised and customised content, offers and services.”

At the heart of the digital strategy is MAS’ website, which is a mission-critical business channel delivering a significant share of the company’s revenue every day. “A key element of our business turn-around was a boost to our brand campaign, backed up with strong customer experience management – delivering on a consistent brand promise across both real-world and digital touchpoints.”

Engagement via social media is also critical to the transformation, and Malaysia Airlines celebrated the milestone of 1 million Facebook fans in October 2013. “Social media is at the forefront of our marketing mix. Growing engagement with customers globally via social platforms has been a major contributor to our business turnaround,” said Mr Dacko.

Stephen Hamill, Director of Digital Marketing Cloud, Adobe Southeast Asia & Hong Kong, said the deal was notable for a number of firsts for the region. “We see this deal as a highly strategic partnership with an organisation that is not only a flagship regional brand, but also a digital visionary and leader. It’s the first managed services deal in Southeast Asia, reflecting that customers are looking to implement more complex solutions across whole-of-business rather than deploy point products.”

Mr Hamill also said a critical part of the decision-making process was to obtain consensus from all the business stakeholders. “The IT team was very closely involved, ensuring the solution was a suitable technology fit. We undertook an extensive Value Engineering Services process as part of the tender, which helped deliver the data and proof points needed to validate the business decision for everyone from marketing to IT to finance.”

“We’re looking forward to embarking on this project in partnership with Malaysia Airlines,” said Mr Hamill. “It’s full speed ahead for Malaysia Airlines and Adobe.”

KUALA LUMPUR – Jan. 24, 2014 – Adobe (Nasdaq:ADBE) has unveiled new 3D printing capabilities in Adobe® Photoshop® CC. By radically simplifying the 3D print process, Photoshop CC will become the go-to tool for anyone who wants to print a 3D model. Available immediately, as part of a major update to Adobe Creative Cloud™, the new 3D printing capabilities integrated in Photoshop CC enable Creative Cloud members to easily and reliably build, refine, preview, prepare and print 3D designs, setting the stage for explosive growth in the 3D printing market.

The new 3D printing capabilities also help creatives to design in 3D from scratch or refine an existing 3D model and produce beautiful, print-ready 3D models using familiar Photoshop tools. Automated mesh repair and support structure generation ensure models will be produced reliably, while accurate previews allow creatives to submit print jobs with confidence.

“The new 3D print capabilities in Photoshop CC take the guess work out of printing 3D models for everyone,” said Winston Hendrickson, vice president products, Creative Media Solutions, Adobe. “Before today there was a gap between the content produced by 3D modeling tools and what 3D printers need in order to deliver high quality results. Now, by simply clicking ‘Print’ in Photoshop CC, creatives can bring 3D designs to the physical world.”

Photoshop CC Turbocharges Emerging 3D Print Ecosystem
With today’s release of Photoshop CC, designs can be printed to a locally connected 3D printer or via built-in access to popular online 3D print services. Photoshop CC supports the most popular desktop 3D printers, such as the MakerBot Replicator, and also supports the full range of high quality materials available on Shapeways -- the 3D printing community and marketplace -- including ceramics, metals, and full color sandstone. Additionally, Photoshop users can now directly upload their 3D models to the Sketchfab 3D publishing service, and embed them in their Behance profile using Sketchfab’s interactive 3D viewer.

• “We’re thrilled to partner with Adobe to help kick-start the delivery of 3D content to their highly creative users," said Peter Weijmarshausen, CEO and Co-Founder, Shapeways, the world’s leading online 3D printing marketplace and community. "We’re focused on making 3D printing accessible and affordable for people all over the world. Stunning 3D Creations Now In Reach For Designers
Printing in 3D enables the production of accurate and compelling prototypes and finished designs and is used in many creative fields, including architecture, jewelry, film and animation.

• Paul Liaw, jewelry designer and sculptor: “My design process is so much easier with the new 3D printing support options in Adobe Photoshop CC. I can make my jewelry designs look beautiful and automate the process of using the least amount of material without going under the printable threshold—this back and forth used to take about 80 percent of my time!”

• Veronica De La Rosa, industrial designer, FATHOM, a product development company and 3D printing specialist: “At FATHOM, we work with some of the most innovative companies to help produce their next generation of products. Using Photoshop CC, the new 3D printing features reduce file troubleshooting and ensure that our client's 3D models are accurately represented before final printing. This is extremely helpful to us as it will speed up customer communication, saving time and money for both us and more importantly our clients."

Adobe Kicks Off 2014 With Innovations Across Essential Design Tools
Adobe today also shipped new features across its flagship design applications and services, as part of a major Creative Cloud release. Additional new features in Photoshop CC include the groundbreaking Perspective Warp, which changes the viewpoint from which an object is seen, and linked Smart Objects that radically improves collaboration – updating the final design automatically if the reference file is changed. Also, new features in Adobe Illustrator® CC and InDesign® CC revolutionize how designers work with type by seamlessly connecting to the Adobe Typekit® font service. It’s now possible to integrate Typekit fonts into print projects, PDF files, DPS apps, and more, while new functionality in InDesign CC reduces the frustration of missing font errors by automatically searching the Typekit desktop font library for options. Dozens of new and enhanced features and services in today’s update will help designers and other creative professionals work more intuitively and efficiently.

Fortinet’s Latest FortiGuard Labs Reports a 30 Percent Increase in Mobile Malware in the Last Six Months; Seeing 1300 New Samples Per Day

Team Reveals that Attackers are Taking Advantage of Old Vulnerabilities, Despite Being Patched, in Ruby on Rails, Java, Acrobat and Apache

MALAYSIA, September 4,  2013 ― Fortinet − a world leader in high-performance network security– recently announced the findings of its FortiGuard threat landscape research for the period of January 1 − July 31, 2013.

1)  Mobile Malware on the Rise

FortiGuard Labs observed a 30 percent increase in mobile malware in the labs over the last six months. The team is now seeing more than 1,300 new samples per day, is currently tracking over 300 unique Android malware families and over 250,000 unique malicious Android samples.

2)  Bring Your Own Trouble

The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) phenomenon has many benefits for a business, chief among them are increased employee efficiency and productivity gains. However, the disadvantage of a lenient BYOD policy is the threat of mobile malware infecting the user’s device and, subsequently, the business network.

“Three years ago, mobile malware wasn’t much of a concern for users or businesses. Most malware at the time targeting smartphones and tablets were nothing more than annoyware such as the Cabir virus or scam software used to commit SMS fraud or replace icons,” said Axelle Apvrille, senior mobile anti-virus researcher for Fortinet’s FortiGuard Labs. “However, as devices have proliferated, so, too, have cybercriminals eager to capitalize on the growing user base, and our research shows the proliferation of mobile malware will not abate anytime soon.”

3)  2013 Changed the Mobile Threat Landscape

In 2013, the mobile threat landscape changed dramatically. Wide scale manufacturer adoption of Google’s Android OS globally has led to an explosion of smartphones in the marketplace. Android devices are available in every market, at price levels from the incredibly inexpensive to feature-rich, cutting edge computing monsters. Coupled with the explosion of available applications to extend device functionality, cybercriminals and other nefarious types have used this platform as a new business opportunity.

4)  Mobile Ransomware Has its Coming Out

In 2012, FortiGuard predicted that the financially lucrative ransomware would make its way onto mobile phones.

“Ransomware has been incredibly successful financially for cybercriminals, it’s no surprise they’ve turned their attention to mobile devices,” said Richard Henderson, security strategist for Fortinet’s FortiGuard Labs. “The Fake Defender malware for Android follows the same M.O. as PC fake antivirus software – it pretends to be altruistic, but in reality, it lies in wait to launch its true form. This malware then locks the victim’s phone and demands payment before unlocking the device.

Once the phone is locked, the victim can either pay the ransom or completely erase their device, losing all their photos and data unless they have a full backup elsewhere.”

5)  New Attacks on Old Vulnerabilities

Even though we’ve seen recent patches for Ruby on Rails, Java, Adobe Acrobat and Apache, FortiGuard Labs is finding attackers are still exploiting those old vulnerabilities.

6)  Ruby on Rails

In January 2013, it was announced that a critical vulnerability in the Ruby on Rails Framework could allow a remote attacker to execute code on the underlying Web server.

Ruby on Rails (RoR) is a Web application framework for the Ruby programming language. Put simply, it allows for rapid, easy and elegant deployment of “Web 2.0” Websites. RoR is a popular framework: hundreds of thousands of Websites online use RoR in some fashion. Further adding to the problem, a Metasploit module was made available to scan for the vulnerability, making the ability to find a Web server to exploit a trivial matter.

7)  Java Remote Code Execution

In January 2013, a zero-day exploit that was able to bypass Java’s sandbox and run arbitrary Java code was discovered.

Java is a ubiquitous technology online – most computers have some form of Java installed and enabled. The vulnerability allowed a malicious applet to run any Java program, bypassing Java’s sandbox and granting full access to the vulnerable computer.

Attacks were discovered in the wild and the exploit was quickly integrated into many popular crimeware attack kits, such as BlackHole, Redkit and Nuclear Pack, giving purchasers of these kits the ability to take advantage of the exploit and install malware on computers. A Metasploit module was also created for the vulnerability, making the ability to find victims a simple point and click affair.

8)  Acrobat/Acrobat Reader Zero-Day in the Wild

In February 2013, a PDF pretending to be a travel visa form from Turkey was detected circulating in the wild and took advantage of a previously unseen vulnerability in Adobe’s Reader software. The exploit worked with all recent versions of Adobe Reader (9.5.X, 10.1.X, and 11.0.X), and on most versions of Microsoft Windows, including 64-bit Windows 7 and most Mac OS X systems.

The exploit PDF was used by cybercriminals in order to install malware on their target’s computers.

9) CDorked Attacks Apache

In late April 2013, a new attack on the popular Apache Web server was discovered. Dubbed CDorked, the malware was able to compromise the Web server and redirect visitors of the compromised Web server to other servers that deliver malware using the BlackHole exploit kit. The attack may also have targeted the Lighttpd and Nginx Web server platforms.

Apache

FortiGuard Labs

6) Ruby on Rails

8) Acrobat/Acrobat reader

hybris Delivers Integration with Adobe Marketing Cloud available through hybris Extend

Combined solution leverages Adobe Analytics for powerful, real-time digital analytics across online and offline channels to enable enhanced data-driven decision-making

Singapore – 24 April, 2013 - hybris, the world’s fastest-growing commerce platform provider ranked “leader” by both principal analyst firms, today announced that Adobe® Analytics, a key component of Adobe Marketing Cloud, has been integrated with hybris Commerce Suite to enhance digital marketing including measurement, segmentation, targeting and optimization.

The integration module, developed jointly by Adobe and hybris, gives organizations a unique combination of real-time analytics across online (including Web, mobile, social and video) and offline marketing channels. The solution enables a multi-dimensional view of customers that makes it possible for organizations to fine tune and better personalize every interaction. The integration module will be available in the hybris Extend marketplace.

Predictive analytics and data modelling enables businesses to deliver the right message to the right customer, through the right channel, at the right time. This integration leverages high-performance, real-time analytics to attribute sales, leads or other business growth indicators to specific marketing efforts. Businesses can determine the most appropriate marketing programs to drive business growth objectives and optimize decision-making for marketing resource allocation across channels.

“Through our integration with Adobe Marketing Cloud, businesses are able to map the entire customer journey for the first time, identifying the most influential moments across all touch points,” explained Patrick Finn, Vice President of Channels, Americas, hybris. “Leveraging the strengths of our respective technologies, we are able to connect online and offline marketing analysis to give businesses truly data-driven decision making capabilities.”

“Today’s consumers leverage a variety of sources to access information about products and services and often switch channels within a single transaction, leaving fragmented waves of digital data in their wake,” said Bill Ingram, Vice President of Adobe Social and Adobe

Analytics, Adobe Systems. “Integrating our analytics solution with hybris’ omni-channel commerce platform enhances our ability to bring all that data together to gain a complete picture of how consumers are interacting with our customers’ brands.”

hybris technology already integrates with Adobe Experience Manager, part of Adobe Marketing Cloud, to provide marketers and retailers capabilities for managing and optimizing the entire buying process across online channels. This new integration with Adobe Analytics helps businesses:

Rapidly analyze large volumes of evolving ‘big data’ from multiple channels and data sources in real-time.

Oracle Java surpasses Adobe Reader as the most frequently exploited software

PETALING JAYA, 26 DECEMBER 2012. According to the recently published Kaspersky Security Bulletin 2012, Oracle Java was the most frequently exploited software by cybercriminals during the year, with Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Player ranking in the second and third places, respectively.

Exploiting vulnerabilities is one of the primary methods used by cybercriminals to install malware on victims’ computers. Cybercriminals exploit applications or software that have un-patched security vulnerabilities, which exist because either the individual or business have failed to patch their vulnerable applications with the latest security updates from vendors.

Exploit packs – or malicious programs that try to infect a computer utilizing various vulnerabilities in popular software – are the main tool behind web-based attacks.

2012: The year of Java vulnerabilities
2012 introduced a number of significant changes in terms of vulnerabilities in popular software. In 2011 the most frequently exploited application was Adobe Reader, which was responsible for 35% of all exploit-related incidents. Java occupied the second place with 25%, and versions of Microsoft Windows accounted for 11% of exploit-related incidents.

In 2012 cybercriminals switched their primary focus to Java. While Adobe Reader was attacked in 28% of security incidents involving vulnerability exploits, Java security holes were responsible for 50% of attacks. Windows components and Internet Explorer were only exploited in only 3% of incidents.

Although Adobe Reader ranked second among applications containing the largest number of vulnerabilities containing web-based exploits in 2012, it should be noted that Adobe has focused more on addressing the problem of vulnerabilities in the latest versions of Adobe Reader. In particular, new measures such as Adobe Sandbox were implemented to make the application more resilient to exploits. These measures make it much harder to create effective exploits for the software.

Android Exploits: an emerging threat
Starting from 2011 Android vulnerabilities regular show up in the list of the most frequently exploited software flaws. Their share is relatively low – 2% of all exploits in 2012 – but this trend is very significant, given the explosive growth of malware for Android-based smartphones and tablets. Certain malicious programs designed for the Android platform utilized vulnerabilities in the mobile operating system which enabled attackers to gain full access and control over exploited mobile devices.

Adobe Unveils Next Generation Acrobat XI

Powerful New PDF Solution Addresses Productivity Gap Across Devices and Platforms

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — October 15, 2012 — Adobe® Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today unveiled Adobe Acrobat® XI software, a powerful new solution that rises to today’s complex document challenges. The industry standard for PDF software will now feature complete PDF editing and export to Microsoft PowerPoint; along with new capabilities and functionality designed for tablets and mobile devices, such as touch-friendly capabilities on tablets and smartphones allowing users to add comments, fill in, save and sign forms. Acrobat XI also supports IT departments with more seamless Microsoft Office and SharePoint integration, easy deployment, applications virtualization and robust application security to help provide a low cost of ownership and sound return on investment.

Products included in this release are: Acrobat XI Pro, Acrobat XI Standard and Adobe Reader® XI.

The mounting productivity inefficiencies and cost of document-based challenges are highlighted in a recent global IDC white paper. A typical company with 1,000 employees has a productivity cost of US$15.9 million annually according to the white paper. Addressing these inefficiencies would be tantamount to hiring an additional 213 people.

“The compounding complexity of work has never been more pressing. As the number of mobile devices and the use of cloud services surge, information workers must be empowered to work more effectively with documents anywhere on any device," said Melissa Webster, program vice president at IDC. "They need a solution that enables them to collaborate with others inside and outside the firewall while at the same time meeting IT and organizational requirements for streamlined management, application security, and secure delivery of information – all with a high ROI.”

The importance of working collaboratively with documents is evident in the amount of time workers spend on it. According to the white paper, information workers spend approximately 15 hours of their workweek reviewing and approving documents. In a telephone poll of about 900 information workers in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, conducted by Adobe’s external agency to understand the type of document related activities most dominant in the workplace, about 60% of them responded that they work with documents to facilitate reviews by multiple parties.

“More and more information is being generated, shared and consumed in documents than ever before,” said Kevin M. Lynch, SVP and GM of Acrobat and Document Services at Adobe. “Working with online forms, collaborative PDF reviews and signatures are the everyday norm for business professionals who were once simply content creators. IT departments need to support these changes while maintaining and maximizing the use of existing infrastructures and systems, as well as provide support and services that enable their organizations to take advantage of new business opportunities, improve results, justify return on investment, and lower the total cost of ownership.”

Vicky Skipp, Regional Director, Adobe South East Asia said  “Adobe Acrobat XI is a powerful new solution that rises to meet the demands of a Malaysian market that is challenged by complex documentation and an increasingly integrated environment by offering an easier way to efficiently manage, collaborate, and boost productivity. Acrobat has been a trusted desktop solution for leading organizations across Malaysia for many years and this latest version upgrade will continue to improve the business functionalities within various industries.”

Vivien Borillo, Manager of Creative Services, Baker & Mckenzie said “The new Acrobat XI will make our jobs easier. With this software, we can easily edit/revise documents even without the original file, and without disrupting the original formatting.”

With Adobe Acrobat XI, new and improved features and functionality for business professionals now include:
• Edit PDF files, modify paragraphs, images, and objects by simply clicking and dragging using the new, intuitive Edit Text and Images tool. Arrange and visually merge select contents and multiple documents into one organized PDF file, while retaining source file integrity.
• Enhanced mobile capabilities. Work with PDF files across tablets and smartphones in touch-friendly Adobe Reader to annotate and add comments, as well as fill in, sign and save forms.
• Save PDF documents as PowerPoint, Word or Excel files or reuse parts of or entire PDF files as Microsoft Office documents and Web pages without retyping. Reflow paragraph text without disturbing format.
• Improved protection of all PDF files created from Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel to help prevent copying, editing, or printing without permission.
The new and improved IT features and functionality now enable IT professionals to:
• Standardize on an easy to use, full-featured, consistent, trusted PDF Reader for iPads and Android tablets. Additionally, deliver Acrobat XI and Reader XI as a centrally managed, touch-friendly, virtual application with new support for Microsoft App-V via Citrix XenApp.
• Integrate Adobe Acrobat XI more seamlessly with Microsoft Office and Microsoft SharePoint, enabling users to do more with PDF in an Office or SharePoint environment.
• Streamline deployment and maintenance with free Adobe tools to aid configuration and installation, as well as enhanced support for Microsoft SCCM/SCUP and Apple Remote Desktop.
• Help mitigate risk and protect systems and data with industry-leading security technology, in addition to the Adobe PDF Whitelist Framework, allowing selective enablement of JavaScript for both Windows and Mac OS. Easily deliver multi-step PDF file preparation and security measures using the Action Wizard to help ensure organizational consistency.

Pricing and Availability
Acrobat XI and its associated products are scheduled to ship within 30 days. They will be available through Adobe Authorized Resellers and the Adobe.com South East Asia store at shop.adobe.com/sea. Adobe Store price for Acrobat XI Standard is expected to be RM 1,022. Adobe Store price for Acrobat XI Pro is expected to be RM 1,533. Upgrade pricing and volume licensing are available. New Mac Malware Discovered, Hours Before Release of Mountain Lion

- Trojan hidden inside multi-platform Java attack designed to hit both Windows
and OS X users -

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, July 25, 2012 – Just hours before the release of Mountain Lion, the latest version of the OS X operating system*, new malware has been discovered highlighting the need for Apple Mac users to protect their computers with anti-virus software.

Sophos researchers have discovered that the new Morcut Mac OS X malware, also known as "Crisis", has been distributed as part of a multi-platform attack, designed to hit both Windows and Mac users - embedded in an archive file which pretends to be Adobe Flash Player.

The threat, which has not yet been seen in the wild, is complex - and when run on an OS X system drops multiple components, reconfigures system settings and installs a backdoor and rootkit combination that connects to a remote server and waits for instructions from malicious hackers.

When run on Windows systems, a version of the Swizzor malware is installed instead.

"Analysis of this malware is ongoing, but Mac users are protected right now if they are running a good, up-to-date anti-virus," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. "The good news is that this threat has not been seen in the wild so far, but we are seeing increasing evidence of cybercriminals exploiting the fact that many Mac users have still not got the message that they need to protect their computers. There is much less malware for Macs than there is for Windows, but that doesn't mean it's non-existent. If Mac users are too laid-back about security and leave their bellies exposed, they're asking for trouble."

SophosLabs experts are continuing to analyse the Morcut malware, and warn that even if the threat does not break into the wild, the techniques it uses could be deployed by other malicious hackers in the future.

Sophos makes available a free anti-virus for Mac home users which protects against the threat. It can be downloaded from http://www.sophos.com/freemacav.

Sophos products detect the various components used in the attack as Troj/JVDrop-A, Mal/Swizzor-D and OSX/Morcut-A.
