Malaysians Prioritise Practicality When Buying Accessories for Their Smartphones

Belkin survey reveals insights into accessories purchasing behaviour of Malaysian smartphone users

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – 8 January 2013 – Underlining its position as one of the leading manufacturers of smartphone accessories, Belkin today unveiled survey findings on the ownership, usage and purchasing behaviour of smartphone accessories amongst Malaysians. According to the survey, Malaysians lean towards practicality when buying smartphone accessories with price and device compatibility as chief considerations.

Approximately 65% of respondents rated pricing and compatibility as the most important considerations when choosing smartphone accessories, ranking above other factors including design (15%), durability (18%) and brand (3%). Although pricing is a key concern, the survey also found that half (50%) of the respondents are willing to spend extra on accessories with premium build quality or materials. Whilst this was overwhelmingly recognised as the dominant reason for Android users to spend more on accessories, iOS users differed distinctly by being almost equally compelled by official or limited edition accessories as well as better warranty packages.

Almost 90% of the respondents recorded having purchased accessories for their smartphones with a majority of three-quarter of this group tend to purchase only as and when necessary. Breaking down the data further, iOS device users in the survey displayed a greater propensity in accessories purchase than Android device users. Almost 35% of respondents using iOS devices tend to purchase accessories at least once every few months compared to only 19% of Android users.

Of the respondents who purchased accessories in the last six months, cases and covers (82%), screen protectors (74%) and power-related accessories (44%) were the types of accessories that users gravitated towards. Not surprisingly, the accessories most heavily purchased by iOS users were cases and covers, with 88% of them purchasing at least one case or cover in the past six months. Interestingly, Android users however seemed to purchase more screen protectors than cases in general, with 81% of them reported doing so in the same duration, slightly more than the 79% who purchased cases/covers.

“As the maker of preferred People Inspired Products for both Apple and Samsung smartphones, Belkin places great importance on developing quality and innovative accessories inspired by the needs and desires of today’s discerning consumers,” said Phillip Trapaga, Country Manager of Belkin ASEAN. “Insights gleaned from the survey are useful in helping us listen to our customers, an effort that is consistent with our belief in delivering products and solutions that perfectly meet our user’s practical needs and individual preferences.”

About 43% of respondents regularly purchase and use branded accessories for their smartphones, with a majority citing that branded accessories are of better quality than non-branded alternatives. 60% of respondents typically buy their smartphone accessories from authorised resellers and IT centres, which was rated above other locations such as shopping mall kiosks or pasar malam (22%) and online retailers (18%).

The survey also found that three-quarter of respondents stated that they would purchase smartphone accessories as gifts for their families and friends.

“Although smartphone accessories primarily provide rational and straightforward benefits such as protection and additional functionality for users, we have also noticed that the desire to express individual style and character plays an important role in influencing the purchasing behaviour,” added Trapaga.

The survey also recorded some interesting differences between iOS and Android users in their smartphone accessories buying patterns. iOS users are more inclined to purchase accessories driven by style and design compared to their Android counterparts. A sizeable 62% of respondents with iOS devices rated style and expression of personality as a major motivation compared to just 38% of Android users. Conversely, Android users are more practical and cost conscious, with 44% of them indicating they would spend as little as possible on covers and cases compared to only 19% of iOS users.

Belkin Introduces All-New Range of High Performance Routers

Faster, Further, Smarter Online Experience

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – 21 Oct 2011 – Belkin today unveiled their latest range of high-performance wireless routers built to enhance user’s surfing, streaming and online gaming experience. Designed specifically for today’s always-connected home users, this versatile range of wireless networking solutions comprise of the Belkin N300, N600 DB and N750 DB routers, as well as wireless USB adapters.

"With the recent household broadband penetration rate surpassing 61% in Malaysia, we are seeing an accelerated demand for faster, more powerful and consistently reliable wireless networking solutions. The new Belkin routers are designed specifically to meet the demands of today’s discerning consumers; whether for work or play," said Mike Chen, Belkin's Networking General Manager.Back in 2004, Belkin introduced the first MIMO (Multiple Input & Multiple Output) product, the Belkin Wireless Pre-N Router, which set the framework for the 802.11n standard. Now in 2011, Belkin brings an evolution to that concept, with a new antenna technology called MultiBeam, which improves upon the performance of MIMO systems by increasing the router’s wireless coverage to achieve higher and more consistent network speed whilst eliminating the occurrences of wireless dead spots.

The router chassis for the entire range of Belkin routers is designed specifically to support the new MultiBeam antennas and maximise the MIMO sphere and absolute coverage distance. Whereas traditional routers tend to provide a donut-shaped coverage pattern – flat and wide – the new Belkin routers orient and polarise the internal MultiBeam antennas to provide improved coverage in all directions.

Something for Everyone
Each of the routers offers something different to fit a variety of users and their individual lifestyles. The routers include the proprietary MultiBeam antennas, from two in the N300 to five in the N750. Most of the routers also include high powered amplifiers to boost the wireless signal even further.

The Belkin N300 wireless router represents a solid introduction to the Belkin new range of routers featuring MultiBeam technology and a connection speed of up to 300Mbps. This makes this model ideal for general wireless Internet sharing and home office productivity, enabling seamless browsing and media streaming for multiple devices from anywhere in your home.

Home users who require higher capacity bandwidth can opt for the higher spec Belkin N600 DB wireless dual-band router, which boasts Belkin’s proprietary MultiBeam technology, dual-band speed of up to 300 Mbps (2.4 GHz) and 300 Mbps (5 GHz), a USB port and 4 Ethernet LAN ports for wired network connections; all the features necessary as a home entertainment gateway for uninterrupted video streaming or online gaming.

The flagship model N750 DB comes replete with MultiBeam technology, dual-band speed of up to 300 Mbps (2.4 GHz) and 450Mbps (5 GHz), 2 USB ports for wireless printing and storage, and 4 Gigabit ports for ultra-fast file sharing. The N750 also has a technology called implicit beam forming, whereby the energy of the radio signal is focused toward the devices on the network instead of radiating in all directions.

Additionally the Belkin N750 DB also features a Hardware-based Network Address Translation that is implemented in the core chipsets to enable lightning-fast NAT speeds (up to 900+ Mbps) and the ability to route at these speeds – without compromising the performance of the rest of your home network. With the Belkin N750, home users will have access to the professional-quality bandwidth management necessary for high quality media streaming and sharing, turning their home into a veritable entertainment hub.

Chen added, "Router speed and processor performance rank high on consumers' list of most valuable features for routers, especially as they begin to add multiple devices and stream high bandwidth content over their home networks. We went to great lengths to ensure our MultiBeam technology provides performance improvements over our competition, and we're thrilled that The Tolly Group results validate our efforts."

In independent testing, The Tolly Group, a leading independent IT testing organisation, found that Belkin's N300, and N600 DB together averaged a 68 percent performance improvement across all tested products, while the flagship N750 DB tested concurrent Wi-Fi and WAN speeds of up to 900Mbps.

The N300, and N600 DB routers were also tested for speed at distance and test results show that Belkin routers have a significant advantage at maintaining higher network speeds over greater distances in the home. Competitors' routers begin to lose signal strength more rapidly after 30 feet, but Belkin routers across the board managed to maintain higher speeds even at distances greater than 60 feet, which in a home environment means you get better Wi-Fi coverage even multiple rooms away from the router's location.

For the top-of-the-range N750 DB router, The Tolly Group focused on processing power and the ability to maintain network performance while running multiple high-bandwidth applications. A test using simultaneous bidirectional throughput of the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands with WAN port download traffic in a single location at 15 feet showed concurrent Wi-Fi and WAN speeds topping twice that of other major brands at more than 900Mbps and network download speeds at almost double the competition. For consumers, this translates to more consistent network speeds and the ability to download and stream content without sacrificing the speed or quality of either activity.

In short, the new Belkin routers improve Internet coverage for the needs and environments of all home users, even across multi-storey structures. This undoubtedly allows users to stream faster, roam further, and work smarter.
