Alcatel-Lucent shares knowledge in conjunction with the company’s Global Days of Caring

Alcatel-Lucent recently held a Knowledge Sharing Session with more than 30 students from Multimedia University (MMU). Themed “At the Speed of Ideas” topics that were shared on that day included the development of communication networks for the future, entrepreneurship and opportunities in the creative multimedia industry. The session was organized in conjunction with Alcatel-Lucent’s Global Days of Caring held worldwide.

Mohd Fazlin Shah Mohd Salleh, President and Managing Director for Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia, kicked off the session with a short address to the attendees, highlighting the importance of continuous innovation and the intrinsic value of ideation in the technology industry. This was followed by a presentation by Mathew Simon, Customer Solutions Director, Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia, who provided an insight on the challenges faced by today’s communication networks and possible solutions to design an intelligent, next-generation network capable of satisfying future bandwidth requirements.

Reza Razali, founder and Managing Director of Terato Tech shared his experience as a successful technopreneur as well as some insightful advice for those who are keen on becoming technopreneurs or carving out a career in the creative multimedia industry.

Meanwhile, Hasnul Nadzrin Shah, who is the Head of Strategy and Policy for the Creative Multimedia Division at MDeC, gave an overview of the potential market size of the industry. He also highlighted the various opportunities and support available for budding entrepreneurs, as well as his thoughts on where the future of the creative multimedia industry is headed.

马来西亚吉隆坡 2009年4月13日讯 – 马来西亚最杰出的年轻网络群英再次聚集在吉隆坡大学，于一年一度的Cisco NetRiders Challenge Malaysia 2009一较高下。该全国大赛由Cisco Malaysia Academy Council举办，目的是要从本地大学、工艺学校及学院里发掘出才华与天分兼备的年轻网络策划人。

今年，赛城多媒体大学的学生再次展现出他们的超凡实力，夺得最高殊荣的全场总冠军及学位组季军两个奖项。而文凭组则由首次参赛的Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin工艺学校（PTSS）队伍获胜。
该比赛让Cisco网络学院（Cisco Networking Academy）的大专生有机会把他们在教室所学的知识转换成实际技能。 同时也创造一个平台让他们的知识与技能在信息和通讯技术(ICT)职场上受承认。 这比赛可说是学生们的宝贵机会，特别是在目前经济不景，求职竞争强大的情况下。

“Cisco很高兴PTSS能首次参与 Cisco NetRiders Challenge。网络学院课程就是为栽培新一代ICT领导者而设的。我们Cisco意识到熟练人才对这领域发展的重要性，也认同政府所推行的再培训计划。同样地，我们也认为更多企业应该投资在人力资源发展上，以应付未来的发展。” Cisco 马来西亚行政总监，Anne Abraham表示。

今年有83支队伍共249名学生参赛，分别来自17所大学、学院及工艺学校。今年的比赛也较往年更具挑战性，学位组和文凭组都得接受理论知识和使用技能方面的考验。大赛评审由一组网络专家担任。优胜队伍的每个队员皆获得奖状、奖杯、现金礼券及由赞助商所赞助的礼品。

“我们从这场比赛中获益良多。虽然我们获得了受Cisco承认的网络伙伴，我们从未真实地应用我们所学习的。通过这比赛，我们面对实际的挑战，而终于能把我们的技能投入实战。我们必须当场应用课室里所学的知识来解决问题。”来自赛城多媒体大学的优胜队队员Ravan a/l Nagalingam（24岁）表示。

“这是一场对体能上和精神上的挑战，我们必须在极大的压力下和有限的时间内有效地沟通与合作。每一个步骤都必须是完美无暇的。我们也很幸运地拥有优势。除了教员们的大力支持，我们的前辈，也就是2008年NetRiders 区域冠军，也给不断引导我们。”赛城多媒体大学主修电信的电子工程学生Chamal Sapumohotti （23岁）表示。

“我非常地紧张，因为这是我们第一次参赛。我很惊讶我们能够胜出，因为这比赛实在是太具挑战性，太激烈了，我们从未预料到会胜出。这是个很好的经验，这场胜利也启发了我，我会更努力去达到成为一个受承认网络专家的目标，最终和Cisco一样的领导者合作。” Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin工艺学校网络支援文凭课程2年级学生Mohd Nasrul Ariffin表示。

该比赛获得了各领域领导者以及各大集团的鼎力支持，包括了多媒体发展企业（Multimedia Development Corporation，MDeC）, MIMOS, Panduit, Pearson Vue, Global Knowledge and IMS Asia, HP 和 Mesiniaga。赞助商及合作伙伴也开办了一个工作展和讲座会以提供网络科技的最新消息，来启发为了未来网络毕业生加入该职场。

“MDeC通过它的MSC马来西亚能力发展计划，或更明确地是能力发展计划的专业发展，旨在鼓励人们持续为个人发展而奋斗，自我提升并发掘自己的潜能。我们希望能在这个领域上提供一个支持技能与能力发展的机会与环境，以应付现在的职场需求。”多媒体发展企业（MDeC）能力发展部副主席Ng Wan Peng小姐表示。

“IT专才的需求量将会持续增加，但要吸引专才并不能只靠工作展及讲座会。我们经常与教育机构合作，提供机会让大学生们学习专业工作技能并鉴定那些技能。通过Cisco的网络学院课程以迎合市场上对IT专才的需求。”Cisco的 Abraham 补充。

网络学院是一项综合电子学习（e-learning）课程，让学生学习在环球经济上所需的IT网络技能。该课程于2001年在马来西亚推行，联通教育机构提供网络专业鉴定，以协助扩大IT和专才发展。自推行以来，我国在47所学府共产生了18000受承认的网络毕业生。

New MMU-Motorola Wireless Broadband Technology Lab Opens at Multimedia University in Malaysia

Innovation leader shares technology and experience to assist students and faculties in their study of advanced wireless broadband technologies

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – 29 October, 2008 – Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that Motorola Technology Sdn Bhd (“Motorola Penang”) has set up a new MMU-Motorola Wireless Broadband Technology Lab at Multimedia University (“MMU”), Cyberjaya, providing a conducive wireless network environment for students and faculty members to conduct applied research on the latest wireless broadband technologies. The Wireless Broadband Technology Lab is the first of its kind in Malaysia and supports MMU’s goal to “Enable the Knowledge Society through WiMAX”.

The lab at MMU is Motorola’s latest contribution to the education community, strengthening the company’s support to human capital development at universities around the world. The Wireless Broadband Technology Lab provides academics and researchers with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with various fixed, nomadic and mobile MOTOwi4TM wireless broadband technologies and applications, keeping them up-to-date with the latest developments.

Mr. Yew Tian Tek, managing director of Motorola Penang said, “Motorola always looks for opportunities to collaborate with universities in innovative technology areas in which MMU has distinct competencies. Motorola decided to join force with MMU as the two parties have enjoyed a long-term and constructive working relationship over the past 10 years. Motorola is sponsoring MOTOwi4 wireless broadband equipment including Canopy®, MOTOMESHTM Duo, wi4 WiMAX access points and customer premises equipments (CPEs) for the Lab. The infrastructure provides an opportunity for faculty members and students to explore new frontiers in state-of-the-art wireless technologies, such as discovering new applications and developing new software.

Motorola’s systems serve multiple purposes for MMU. The MOTOMESH Duo system enables a WiFi service which covers indoor and outdoor areas of MMU’s Cyberjaya campus. It is a full community based service as the installation and maintenance of the system is carried out by a team formed by MMU students and staff. Motorola’s WiMAX system will allow MMU to conduct various wireless broadband related training and research activities.

In addition, Motorola is establishing a seamless campus-wide wireless broadband network by using its MOTOMESH Duo and Canopy network solutions, allowing more than 10,000 MMU students and faculty members to access the Internet anywhere in the MMU campus.

MMU began the set up of the Wireless Broadband Technology Lab and deployment of the MOTOMESH Duo network in June 2008. Motorola is also training MMU staff and students to maintain and manage the Canopy, MOTOMESH Duo and WiMAX equipment. By working closely with Motorola’s engineering team, MMU’s team has an opportunity to learn first-hand from technical experts in setting up state-of-the-art wireless broadband networks.

Kuala Lumpur, 14 September 2007 - IBM Malaysia recently announced strategic partnerships with Multimedia University (MMU) and Share/Guide Association Malaysia (Share/Guide) targeted at increasing the knowledge and skills on mainframe.

Recent survey conducted by the MSC Malaysia K-Workers Development Institute (KDI) has shown that the demand for skills on Mainframe Engineering supersedes the supply talent pool. The 3 parties are embarking on this joint initiative to address the anticipated skills shortage in mainframe professionals locally and globally.

The official signing ceremony was held at the Share/Guide Conference 2007, themed “ICT in 50 Years of Nation Building & Beyond…”. The signing marks the beginning of three-way relationship between MMU, Share/Guide and IBM Malaysia in addressing the anticipated skills shortage in mainframe professionals locally and globally.

“IBM seeks to incorporate innovation into practical learning. We want to make learning and talent building easy and accessible to everyone, at any where and time. We strive to plug the gaps in the supply of knowledge workers by collaborating with the industry players and academia. More importantly, we take on the responsibility of being the central driving force at implementing and administrating programmes towards developing human capital and building a skilled workforce” said Ou Shian Waei, Managing Director of IBM Malaysia.

Mainframes tend to be hidden from the public eye. They do their jobs dependably--indeed, with high reliability, high availability and scalability. It is also highly secure and very resistant to most forms of insidious abuse that afflict PCs, such as e-mail-borne viruses and Trojan Horses.
“IBM mainframes can run different applications such as payroll, human resources, among others, on multiple operating systems, through the use of virtualization technology and the IBM mainframe has also long embraced Linux and open standard technologies. Just about everyone could have interacted with a mainframe at one point or another. In fact, Malaysia 1st computer is an IBM mainframe installed in 1965 at he National Electricity Board Headquarters,” Ou added.

This initiative will see students from Multimedia University and members of Share/Guide having access to world class educational material, effective technical training and innovative learning material on mainframe.

Under this partnership, IBM Malaysia will provide a total of 20 Share/Guide members per year with a 100% subsidy on selected courses and examination fees. IBM will also continue to provide refresher courses for current members, who need re-introduction into the mainframe roadmap and to rebuild their skills in selected areas.

Qualified staffs from IBM and experienced Share/Guide members will be on hand to facilitate this learning process experience. At the same time, student and lecturers from MMU will benefit from having access to the world class IBM mainframe projects, courses and training session on mainframe architecture and technology through the setting up of the z System (Mainframe) Academy at MMU by IBM.

There shall also be the incorporation of related mainframe technologies into the undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. Students will also have access to research and development projects on mainframe technology and first hand information of the latest cutting edge systems. Student from MMU and members of Share/Guide will be able to tap into the entire world-class online curriculum IBM Mainframe e-Learning website which holds all comprehensive educational, training and development materials.

Through the remote learning, the initiative allows for more participation, learning opportunities and collaboration online. IBM, Share/Guide and MMU will also look into creating a mainframe community where activities on skill development will be pushed through MMU’s IBM User Group and student ambassadors.Graduates from the mainframe programmes will also enjoy a priority when looking for opportunities with Share/Guide.

“With this strategic partnership, we are becoming more tactical in shaping the leadership and technical skills of our students, ensuring that they emerge to become world class employees and contributors to the development of the industry and the nation,” said Professor Datuk Dr. Ghauth Jasmon, President of Multimedia University.

He added that such initiatives are in recognition of the importance of utilizing technological advances to fuel future growth for the next generation workforce and in line with the university’s objective that pursues teaching and research in cutting edge and relevant fields of learning that harnesses state-of-the art information and communication technologies.

Cyberjaya, June 20, 2007 – Multimedia University students will be the first in Malaysia’s institutions of higher learning to have hands-on experience of Enterprise IT Management (EITM) technologies equipped at the CA EITM Laboratories in Multimedia University’s Cyberjaya and Malacca campuses.

The CA EITM laboratory is a part of CA’s technology alliance agreement with Multimedia University which was inked mid last year with a RM12 million commitment from CA Malaysia. This investment is a part of CA’s worldwide education initiative to promote education whilst bridging the gap between academia and commercial practice.

The opening ceremony of the CA EITM Laboratories today was officiated by YB Dato’ Kong Cho Ha, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. It will cater to about 2,500 students from Multimedia University’s Faculty of Information Technology and Faculty of Information Science and Technology.

“The laboratories aim to bridge the gap between the academic and the commercial world and contribute to the human capital development in Malaysia. EITM is the architectural foundation of every business today. The laboratories will provide opportunities for students to understand and work on the latest and most comprehensive IT management solutions in the market. This will allow them to acquire the right skills and therefore increase chances of employability,” said Queenie Wong, CA Malaysia’s Managing Director.

The CA EITM Laboratories will also provide invaluable exposure for students to understand how CA’s technologies enable organizations to optimize resource allocation in anticipation of business needs. EITM ties together management of the entire enterprise IT environment — including end-users, infrastructure, data, applications, IT services and business processes.
“We are pleased that the state-of-the-art laboratories are now ready for use. Our aim is to produce graduates who are kept abreast on the latest developments in the IT industry, and adept with the ability to innovate, contribute and lead in the new millennium. The CA EITM laboratories provide the opportunity for our students to strive in that direction through exposure to CA’s latest technologies and innovation,” says Prof. Datuk Dr. Ghauth Jasmon, Multimedia University’s President.

He added that such partnerships with the private sector companies have resulted in the University having the best graduate employment records in Malaysia. 96 per cent of all MMU graduates are in employment within six months of completing their course.

At the opening ceremony, the awards for CA Best Student and CA Scholarship were also presented by Dato’ Kong Cho Ha. The CA Scholarship Award is valued at RM15,000.

The RM15, 000 CA Scholarship Award was handed over to Multimedia University student, Choo Chia Poh, by Queenie Wong, Managing Director of CA Malaysia.
