MOLPay as payment gateway for .my domain mapping platform

KUALA LUMPUR: MOLPay, the leading online payment solution provider in Southeast Asia is now the payment gateway for www.ichoose.my, the domain mapping platform launched recently by MyNIC.

Rebranding effort aims to bring domain name technologies closer to the public

KUALA LUMPUR, 23rd February 2009 – MYNIC Berhad (MYNIC), the sole administrator for web addresses that end with .my in Malaysia launched its new brand name, logo and tagline - results of a rebranding effort to bring domain name technologies closer to the people with a formal gala dinner event.

The event was officiated by Datuk Dr. Maximus Ongkili, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and witnessed by Encik Mohamed Sharil Mohamed Tarmizi, Chief Operating Officer of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The new brand name would be .my DOMAIN REGISTRY whilst its legal name will remain MYNIC Berhad. With a new and more contemporary logo, .my DOMAIN REGISTRY wishes to bring the domain name technologies closer to their target market- the people of Malaysia.

Datuk Dr Maximus in his speech stressed, “It is important for us to increase our knowledge, open up our minds and be aware of the rapid changes happening around us and adapt to it accordingly,”

MOSTI had its own image revamp last month in conjunction with its Innovation Day 2009.

”The desire to reach out to everyone regardless of background, education or technical competency compelled us to take the leap. The result, a re-branding exercise which brought to the table a lot of ideas and key elements to define MYNIC as Malaysia’s domain name registry with research capacity for domain name technology,” said Puan Shariya Haniz Zulkifli, Director of MYNIC Berhad.

Logo Definition
The logo reads and is pronounced as ”dot my domain registry”. The my abbreviation is to offer immediate recognition to the Malaysian identity and its representation amongst world domain name registries.

The ’.’ is used to represent .my DOMAIN REGISTRY’s core business - registering and maintaining domain names in Malaysia. The ellipse represents global reach and .my DOMAIN REGISTRY’s dedication in helping Malaysians reach out to the world with national identity. Colour Representation
The distinct blue of the logo represents neutrality in all activities without fear and favor. This is in special relation to the three thrusts of .my DOMAIN REGISTRY’s working philosophy trust, confidence and security.

The ’.’ is half orange representing the business community while the white half represents the individual community. Launches new IPv6 enabled domain names to serve growing online community

KUALA LUMPUR, 20th November 2008 – MYNIC Berhad (MYNIC), one of the most innovative providers of Internet Registry and Addressing Services in Asia Pacific today propelled Malaysia into achieving yet another milestone in the technology realm by launching the myDNSIPv6. The new framework was launched by Yang Berhormat Tuan Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Minister Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation accompanied by Yang Berbahagia Datuk Dr. Halim Shafie, Chairman of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

Malaysia's IP addresses are currently operating on the IPv4 framework which is more than 25 years old. The rapid growth of the Internet community calls for bigger address capacity and MYNIC as the sole administrator of domain identities in Malaysia has dedicated research teams, time and resources towards upgrading the DNS system to support the "next generation" IPv6 protocol and ensure the shift is done smoothly to serve the local community.

"I think it is obvious that in the last few years, Internet usage has become a large part of the nation's functionability. Whether government, individuals, companies or institutions, all sectors are in touch with the online world for multiple purposes. Hence, the growing number of machines logging on to the Internet can only mean a growing number of IP addresses registered in the system," said MYNIC's Director, Shariya Haniz Zulkifli

"The increasing number of new IP's is wearing out the number of addresses the IPv4 framework can support hence the need to shift to IPv6 with its larger address space and enhanced capabilities. This way, Malaysia can welcome and manage more IP addresses which simply means more users can jump onto the online bandwagon," she added.

The address space is increased from the 32-bit of IPv4 to 128-bit with the IPv6 framework. Compared to the IPv4 which could accommodate 4 billion IP addresses, the IPv6 provides a theoretical maximum of 340 undecillion (billion billion billion billion) IP addresses. With such a huge address space, ISPs will have sufficient IP addresses to allocate enough addresses to every customer so that every IP device has a truly unique address.

The availability of WiMAX and the already available WiFi and broadband services have attracted more users to be connected. Also the Internet is being used for businesses, communication, expression of views and entertainment. The rising popularity of the online media and its growing audience requires Malaysia to expand and upgrade its Internet Protocol framework firstly to serve the growing framework and secondly to support its vision to be a technology leader in the region.

The new IPv6 framework also adds many improvements to the existing IPv4 system. Faster routing is now possible, though invisible to the user eye, the search for a domain address will now be a faster process. Also the framework simplifies aspects of address assignment and renumbering, when changing Internet connectivity providers with better network auto-configuration capabilities.

"IPv6 also has the capability of reducing the total time which people have to spend configuring and managing systems. An IPv6 system can participate in "stateless" auto-configuration, where it creates a guaranteed-unique IP address and offers a middle ground, which makes the lives of network managers easier," enthused Shariya.

Domain name system servers, which are the core function of MYNIC, must be the first physical device to make the transition to IPv6. In order to shift efficiently, the address database must first be upgraded to accommodate both IPv4 and IPv6 in order to have IPv6 address lookup.

Hence, MYNIC's research team has held test-beds and invited companies to be pioneers to test out the .my DNS integrated with the new IPv6 framework to ensure it operates smoothly. The myDNSIPv6 was activated nationwide on 3rd November 2008.

Local domain name owners are urged to register their IPv6 address as soon as possible through MYNIC Berhad. Maintenance sessions which took place before and on the activation date has left MYNIC servers well prepared to support IPv6 addresses.

The IPv6 will only gradually replace the IPv4 framework. For the time being, both the systems will co-exist for many years before the IPv6 becomes an independent provider.

Besides the IPv6 research, MYNIC's R&D is also exploring the Next Generation Network (NGN), Electronic Number Mapping (ENUM), DNS Security (DNSSEC) and Anycast technology which recently launched its mirror root server in Malaysia for faster routing services.

The DNS is a big roadmap in the World Wide Web. It helps users to search the location of their website in digital format through millions of servers connected to the Internet.

It also works as an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they are easier to remember. MYNIC signs MOU with AG Projects, Netherlands for knowledge sharing, technology transfer on the research of ENUM in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, 28th November, 2007 – MYNIC Berhad (MYNIC), one of the most innovative providers of Internet Registry and Addressing Services in Asia Pacific has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with AG Projects from the Netherlands for knowledge sharing and technology transfer on the research of Telephone Number Mapping (ENUM) in Malaysia.

The MOU was witnessed by Yang Berbahagia Datuk Alihan Haji A. Hamid, Deputy Secretary General of Policy, Ministry of Science Technology & Innovation (MOSTI) who also officiated MYNIC’s Internet Technology Innovation Seminar 2007 which was held in conjunction with the National Innovation Convention & Exhibition 2007 (NICE 2007), organized by MOSTI at the Putra World Trade Centre from 27th – 30th November, 2007.

According to MYNIC’s Director, Pn. Shariya Haniz Zulkifli, the MOU is part of MYNIC’s plan to strengthen the agency’s research arm to bring forth technological innovation in the field of ENUM.

ENUM is a protocol that provides a translation mechanism for E.164 telephone numbers into IP addressing schemes. Based on standards endorsed by IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) and ITU (International Telecommunication Union), ENUM is the key ingredient of the convergence between PSTN (Public Switch Telephone Network) and the Internet.

“The worlds of IT and telecommunications are getting more and more integrated. These two worlds will one day become one. As such, MYNIC has taken the initiative to be on the look out for technological solutions that can meet the challenges of such imminent integration and ultimately enabling MYNIC to offer better services to our customers,” added Shariya.

Hence, the selection of AG Projects as MYNIC’s technology partner to collaborate on finding simple solutions for complex problems is timely.

AG Projects is a software vendor specialized in serving companies like cable operators and Internet service providers. The PEP is to ensure that our existing registrants do not lose out their unique identities to new registrants,” Shariya said.

These shorter “.my” addresses not only helps identify and brand the company’s operations but also proves the efforts taken by locally established entities to go global via the web while retaining their national identity.

Existing “.gov.my” names will be reserved for the Priority Entry Period by MYNIC. Government entities are urged to apply for their 2LD in order to get their identities during this time. If the reserved names are not registered within this period, the names will be released for public registration when the registration is open to the public.

Public registration will begin from March 2008 onwards. These applications will be processed on a first come first served basis. Each individual will be allowed to register as many 2LD’s as he/she desires as long as it does not infringe upon the rights of trademarked names and registered company names in Malaysia.

The third level domain names will continue to be available for registration.

All registration received by MYNIC will be processed in line with our terms and conditions and applicants must enter into an agreement with MYNIC based on those conditions.

Registration fees for a 2LD domain name is at a suggested retail price of RM 120.00 a year.

MYNIC’s Director, Shariya Haniz Zulkifli said, “Domain names are making a shift from category centric to general addressing. Many nations worldwide have begun the introduction of second level domain names as a step towards opening up a simplified and easy to recall addressing system with shorter domain names. Our initiative to offer this new service is to ensure Malaysia is at par with the rest of the world.”

MYNIC’s move to offer 2LD’s to the public is in line with the expanding web world and the influx of businesses on the Internet that demands a unique identity to be noticed. Even more so, with companies diversifying and opening up to multiple operations, a generic identity would be more appropriate.

“The 2LD will offer a simple and memorable addressing service that voids the boundaries of industries when looking at a business or activity. The .my addressing service provided by MYNIC will offer Malaysians a chance to create and operate a local unique identity globally,” added Shariya.

The registration for the 2LD will be implemented in two phases by MYNIC - Phase I and Phase II. Phase I will function to assist existing registrants to apply for an equivalent 2LD while Phase II will be open for new registrants to apply for their identity.

(those registered by 5.00 p.m. on 26th October 2007)

This period will serve as a window of opportunity for MYNIC’s existing third level domain name clients e.g. “abc123.com.my”/ “abc123.net.my” to apply for a second level domain name (2LD) e.g. “abc123.my”. No other variations will be allowed e.g. “abcxyz123.my”. Existing third level domain names can be retained by clients.

Phase II

· Registration period : March 2008 onwards
· Requirements : Open to public
· Processes : i) On first come first served basis.
ii) Registration will not be restricted to one
identity per person.

Each individual will be allowed to register as many 2LD’s as he/she desires as long as it does not infringe upon the rights of trademarked names and registered company names in Malaysia.

A unique identity once created acts as a long term investment in opening up new markets as well as keeping in contact with existing ones in a faster and more efficient manner.

All registration received by MYNIC will be processed in line with our terms and conditions and applicants must enter into an agreement with MYNIC based on those conditions.

Registration fees for a 2LD domain name is at a suggested retail price of RM 120.00 a year.

MYNIC invites public to participate in .my domain name system test-bed on IPv6 technology

SERI KEMBANGAN, 17th July, 2007 -- MYNIC, the .my domain administrator has today announced that it will be conducting trials of .my domain name system (DNS) on the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) technology and is inviting the public to participate in its test-bed starting from 17th July to 30th August, 2007.

The .myDNSIPv6 test-bed is to enable Malaysians to begin familiarising themselves with the DNS on IPv6 technology.

“Our plan to offer the DNS IPv6 services to the public is part of the government’s ambitions to become an IPv6-enabled country by the year 2010. Thus, it is our pleasure to announce that MYNIC is on track and is currently in the process of becoming one of the pioneer government agencies to be IPv6 compliant,” said Pn. Shariya Haniz Zulkifli, Director of MYNIC Berhad.

As the Internet becomes more pervasive, the DNS, being the core feature of the Internet, is facing increasing pressure to support additional domain name resources for IPv6 (AAAA), the next generation Internet protocol, and to have sufficient performance for robust operation even under denial of service attacks.

The current IPv4 technology is expected to expire and exhausted of IP addresses within the next five to 10 years as noted by the Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) and thus, will be unable to support future growth of Internet-related appliances, applications and services.

“The adoption of IPv6 technology will bring benefits to the registry such as MYNIC as it has the ability to expand the address space from 32-bit to 128-bit. IPv6 technology will also be able to generate 340 octillion (340 billion, billion, billion) of available address space. This would mean, even devices such as mobile phones and electrical appliances can have their own IP addresses,” explained Shariya.


Moreover, IPv6 allows stateless auto configuration of hosts, faster routing and better network security layer. With .myDNSIPv6 test-bed, the public and organizations can now conduct testing their name server addresses on IPv6 and record them with MYNIC in IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack environment.

This test-bed is available to the IPv4/IPv6 community with pertinent to MYNIC Berhad terms and conditions. From 17th July to 30th August, this test-bed should be considered experimental and will only be officially launched by the end of this year.

Testers are required to register their particulars for the .myDNSIPv6 test-bed via URL: http://www4.mynic.net.my/intro/ with the following information:
(a) Domain name
(b) Organization and contact person information
(c) Primary and secondary name server information (2 name servers)
* Hostname
* IP addresses (IPv4 or IPv6) - at least one of the test name servers must be IPv6 compliant where primary and secondary name servers must be active and responsive.

MYNIC aims to increase knowledge pool on domain name system (DNS)

SERI KEMBANGAN, 12th July, 2007 -- MYNIC, the .my domain administrator has today announced that it will be conducting a series of training workshops called .myTraining Workshop Series 2007, on domain name system’s (DNS) latest technologies in August this year.

.myTraining Workshop Series 2007 is aimed at increasing the knowledge pool on DNS by providing the academia, researchers, practitioners in IT community as well as the general public real life, practical approaches on the latest technologies used to enable easy, fast accessibility and management of domain names.

The .myTraining Workshop Series 2007 will also be the platform to share ideas and knowledge on key technologies that will have an impact on how domain name systems will be managed, accessed and deployed in the near future, namely:

a) IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) technology
IPv6 is a technology that will resolve and overcome many of the serious limitations of the current Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4), as it is designed to allow steady growth of the Internet and allow for greater efficiency and security. It also has the ability to expand the address space from 32-bit to 128-bit. IPv6 technology will also be able to generate 340 octillion (340 billion, billion, billion) of available address space. This would mean, even devices such as mobile phones and electrical appliances can have their own IP addresses

b) ENUM (Telephone Number Mapping) technology
ENUM is a DNS-based protocol to unify the telephone system with the Internet by using a Dynamic Discovery Delegation System (DDDS) application to resolve telephone numbers into data stored in DNS

c) VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology
VoIP is a technology that allows telephone calls to be made over computer networks like the Internet. VoIP converts analog voice signals into digital data packets and supports real-time, two-way transmission of conversations using Internet Protocol (IP). VoIP offers a substantial cost savings over traditional long distance telephone calls.

d) DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) technology
DNSSEC technology is the latest technological innovation that protects the DNS from security breaches. When deployed, it helps authenticate data on DNS, provides data integrity and authenticates denial of existence.





“Convergence of emerging technologies is already happening. We must keep pace with these emerging technologies if we do not want to be left behind. The number of knowledge workers in the country need to be elevated at a faster rate if we are to become a knowledge economy and a developed country by the year 2020,” said Puan Shariya Haniz Zulkifli, Director of MYNIC Berhad adding that MYNIC successfully nurtured the country’s first DNS community last year through its .myTraining Workshop Series 2006.

Following last year’s success, MYNIC is enhancing its training initiatives this year. Participants can expect more comprehensive training workshop syllabus, detailed hands-on exercise, exposure to dual stack network environment that support IPv4 & IPv6 as well as getting real life, practical experiences and approaches from trainers who are experts in their respective fields.

“The worlds of IT and telecommunications are getting more and more integrated. These two worlds will one day become one. As such, it is best we start looking at the trends and challenges of integrating and deploying these technologies and address the issues at hand,” added Shariya.

.myTraining Workshop Series 2007 will be held at the Palace of Golden Horses Hotel from 20th to 30th August, 2007 and has been designed to encompass the skill sets of ISPs (Internet Service Providers), educationists, researchers, country code top level domain name (ccTLD) operators, DNS administrators and providers, systems administrators as well as DNS enthusiasts who are interested in utilizing DNS and its related applications.

The .myTraining Workshop Series 2007 will comprise of:

i) Knowing Your DNS and Impact of IPv6 on DNS (20th – 21st August, 2007)
This workshop aims to enable participants gain sufficient background, skills and expertise to deploy DNSIPv6 in their own organizations. Participants will be given valuable tips and hands-on exercises on techniques and tools to help troubleshoot server configurations, from building primary and secondary name server to populating DNS server with AAAA records to configuring it to perform lookups to debugging a zone file. They will also get to partake in the .myDNSIPv6 test-bed and review the results instantly.

ii) Revelation of ENUM and VoIP in Next Generation Network (NGN) (23rd – 25th August, 2007)
Apart from providing participants updates and latest trends on ENUM and VoIP technologies, trainers will also guide them on how to install and configure Asterisk, one of the most popular and fully featured open source PBXs available. Hands-on development of applications running on the infrastructure of an integrated telephony and Internet system will also be given. These applications include database integration, interactive voice response (IVR) applications, billing systems, queuing / helpdesk systems, as well as integration with external applications.

iii) DNS Security (DNSSEC) At Its Best! (28th – 30th August, 2007)
At this workshop participants will get to build their DNS in such a way that it is trusted by end users, one that gives them the assurance of getting the correct authenticity and integrity of the data it provides. As such, this workshop intends to enlighten the participants on the various features of the DNSSEC as well as its related configuration and troubleshooting tools. Trainers will be providing hands-on real life, practical approaches at this workshop.

“There have been many key developments in DNS technology and it is important for
Malaysians to keep themselves updated. This is what these workshops are all about, to help keep our technical community well informed with the current trends and technologies, so that, they, in turn, can assess the impact it might have on their businesses and operations. I believe those who participate will benefit greatly from these workshops," Shariya affirmed.
