MICROSOFT APPLAUDS MDTCA’S SIKAP TULEN CAMPAIGN IN STEP TOWARDS A PIRACY-FREE MALAYSIA

Kuala Lumpur, 27 July 2007 – The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs’ (MDTCA) recent launch of its latest anti-piracy effort, Sikap Tulen – a campaign aimed at educating Malaysians on the benefits of using original or licensed software, and the importance of intellectual property – has earned the praise and support of Microsoft Malaysia.

Speaking on behalf of Microsoft Malaysia, Business Development Manager, Celina Conti said, “Microsoft is in full support of the government’s commitment towards combating software piracy and believes the launch of Sikap Tulen will further enhance anti-piracy efforts to result in the reduction of piracy rates within the country”.

“There is an urgent need to effect a change in mindset when it comes to license compliance, and Sikap Tulen is an excellent vehicle to urge organisations to be compliant in their software purchases, educate consumers on the need to buy original software, and to also ensure retailers keep their premises piracy-free. As a responsible corporate citizen, we look forward to contributing our part in supporting the government achieve the objectives set out in the Sikap Tulen campaign to combat piracy,” she added.

Sikap Tulen comprises six core areas targeted at different levels of the ICT ecosystem, and has specific initiatives for professionals (Sikap Tulen: Professional), directors (Sikap Tulen: Director), companies (Sikap Tulen: Company), the general public (Sikap Tulen: Society) and retail owners (Sikap Tulen: IT Mall). The campaign will be supported by enforcement activities (Ops Tulen: Enforcement) to address the existing use of pirated or unlicensed software in Malaysia.

“Genuine products ensure users enjoy a rich and complete computing experience with total confidence and peace of mind, as well as protection against the risks of counterfeit software. We hope that businesses, consumers, IT vendors and all factions of the ICT ecosystem will take heed and continue to support the government’s aspiration to reduce software piracy in Malaysia,” said Microsoft’s Celina.

According to Business Software Alliance (BSA), Director of Marketing, Asia, Roland Chan, BSA has also expressed their commendation on the government’s latest effort to reducing software piracy via the Sikap Tulen campaign. “We see Sikap Tulen as a positive development for the technology industry, businesses and consumers alike. We hope that it will cause an increased awareness on the benefits of buying genuine and ultimately compelling Malaysians to choose genuine products over pirated software.

He continued, “To achieve this considerable charge, it is imperative for key industry players, as corporate citizens, to align their efforts to the campaign’s initiatives and objectives. Indeed we hope more companies, like Microsoft Malaysia, will emerge to play their part in this concerted effort by the government to create a piracy-free Malaysia”.
