INTEL & FRIENDS MAKE GOOD USE OF RECYCLABLE WASTES

KULIM, February 21, 2008 – Intel Malaysia recently announced the winners of the Intel & Friends Recycling Campaign 2007 and reinforced its commitment to the environment with the launch of its 2008 initiative. This annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) project first introduced in 2003, pools together the support of various sections of the community to increase awareness, responsibility and action towards maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

The Intel & Friends Recycling Campaign 2007 is one of the many community programs under Intel Malaysia’s CSR initiatives that were recently awarded the Prime Minister’s Corporate Social Responsibility Award 2007 for the best Community and Social Welfare initiative in the country. Other CSR initiatives include Volunteer Matching Grant Program (VMGP), Back2School, Foster Parents Program and mangrove treeplanting, among others.

Under the Intel & Friends Recycling Campaign 2007, Intel together with participating schools within Penang and the Kulim district and partnering companies from Kulim Hi-Tech Park, successfully collected over 150 tonnes of recyclables waste throughout the campaign period. In addition, Intel deployed more than 100 Intel volunteers to over 40 schools in Penang and Kedah to raise the environmental awareness and inculcate recycling habits among the youth of today. Talks on recycling by Intel volunteers were conducted to educate the students on the importance of recycling.

In recognition of these recycling efforts, Intel donated 36 recycled laptops to the winning schools and polytechnic with the highest amount of recyclable wastes collected, as well as recognizing the partnering companies within Kulim Hi-Tech Park area.

“We are particularly proud of this Campaign because it involves the entire community; including schools, Non-Governmental Organisations and companies,” said Andres E. Salazar, General Manager, Kulim Chipset Operation (KMCO), Intel Malaysia.

“Thousands of people from our surrounding community work together to each play our individual roles in reducing our carbon footprint and its impact on the environment at large. The synergy formed between the many partners cement our collective commitment to the environment and reflects our enthusiasm in ensuring that the community we work and live in also respects and treasures the eco-system that surrounds us,” added Salazar.

The 2007 Campaign raised more than RM35, 000 in total. From this amount, RM30, 000 will be channeled towards WWF – Malaysia to promote its Turtle Conservation Project, whilst the balance will be used by the Penang Inshore Fisherman’s Association (PIFWA) to fund the purchase of mangrove tree saplings that will promote the regeneration of our natural mangrove swamps.

The Intel & Friends Recycling Campaign 2008 hopes to collect over 200 tonnes of recyclable wastes this year. From March 1 till 31stAugust 2008, students at these schools will have to fill up the recycling bins located within their school compound. At the end of each week during the competition, representatives from Malaysia Newsprint Industries (MNI) will collect and weigh the material in each school’s bin to determine the winner. For the 2008 Campaign, winning schools with the highest amount of recyclable wastes collected will stand to win 40 recycled laptops from Intel.
