Malaysian finalist in Google Science Fair 2012

Kuala Lumpur, May 23, 2012 -- Ivan Ang Jie Xiong from Georgetown, Penang is one of the 90regional finalists of Google Science Fair 2012.

His 15-16 year old category submission, the MechSorter and the Automated Paper RecyclingSystem is an automated recycling system that sorts out objects according to conductivity, colorand weight into selected storage bins with a view toward conservation of global resources. Thisprototype was designed entirely using LEGO blocks.

The Google Science Fair is an annual online science competition seeking curious minds fromaround the globe open to everybody between the ages of 13 to 18. All that’s needed is an idea.Because geniuses are not always A-grade students, Google welcomes all mavericks, square-pegs and everybody who likes to ask questions.

This year, Google received fantastic projects from thousands of entries from over 100countries, and have narrowed it down to 90 regional finalists.

In the next stage, 15 global finalists will be flown to the Google HQ in California, USA for acelebratory Science Fair event and the final judging round which will take place on 23 July 2012.

The grand prize winner will win a 10-day scientific trip to the Galapagos Islands with NationalGeographic Expeditions, a US$50,000 scholarship from Google and real-life work opportunitiesin either Lego, CERN or Google. The winner’s school will enjoy digital access to ScientificAmerican for one year, commencing July 2012.
