BCS adds Macau to Asian airport wins

30 Nov 2012. BCS Group continues to consolidate its Asian presence, winning a long lead time contract to upgrade the outbound baggage handling at Macau International Airport.

The win is handled from BCS’s recently-opened Kuala Lumpur office, itself a key factor in the decision to award the contract.

It also follows on from the association with US aviation consultancy BNP Associates which named New Zealand’s BCS Group an approved supplier of high tech baggage handling system controls to airports around the world.

The airport is the only one in Macau and, since its opening in 1995, it has been a common transfer point for travellers between mainland China and Taiwan, as well as a passenger hub for destinations in mainland China and South East Asia.

According to Brad Jackson, BCS General Manager- Airport Systems, the existing outbound baggage handling upgrade will support around five million passengers per annum.

BCS-developed technology includes four complete inline Hold Bag Screening systems systems, friction drive incline carousels, over-size x-ray units and BCS ‘smart’ automation and software controls platform, using NZ-developed Airflow and Sym3 sortation and controls to ensure bags are screened and delivered to the correct flight.

Use of the BCS-developed technology enables the simulation and verification of Baggage Handling System design, operational analysis and complete pre-installation testing of low and high level control systems.
Such high performing business intelligence is part of all BCS philosophy, explained Marc Michel General Manager- Services & Solutions.

“In this situation, the client is using HLC Airflow’s comprehensive range of baggage handling functionality within a modular framework.

“It interfaces with the conveyor control system PLCs and x-ray screening equipment, supporting multi-level screening processes including automatic and manual review, controlling and recording the security screening status of bags passing through the BHS.”

Michel said the unique modular approach created a baggage handling platform capable of rapid response to changing needs.

“It integrates seamlessly with Sym3 to provide critical operational and business intelligence tools for better decision-making.

“One of the key business priorities is making the whole process, from start to finish, more efficient, more productive and more cost effective.

“Because we work so closely with airport managers around the world, we develop our technology to answer these questions and anticipate the answers to many more.”

BCS’s Sym3 is the world’s most advanced visualisation package, taking simulation and commissioning of complex plants and processes to a new level of 3D presentation and understanding and creating the world’s first 3D SCADA control system.
