Malaysian Shutterbugs Snap and Shine at Canon PhotoMarathon 2013

Grand Prize Winner of the Seventh Canon PhotoMarathon, Azril Azam Will be Flying to Kansai, Japan

Kuala Lumpur, 16 November 2013 – The Boulevard at Berjaya Times Square came alive early this morning as photographers from all over Malaysia came together for the seventh edition of the Canon PhotoMarathon challenge. Young photography enthusiasts competed in the first ever Junior category and blew the judges away with the photos they took.

“As the leading imaging brand, we want to create opportunities and support efforts in growing the photography industry, to spark new interest and groom the younger generation. Every year the Canon PhotoMarathon competition unearths new talents and this year is no exception. We hope that these young photographers will continue to hone their talents and contribute to the growth of the photography industry,” said Donny Ling, Director of the Imaging Communication Products division of Canon Marketing (Malaysia).

“More than just an exciting platform for photographers to showcase their talents, the Canon PhotoMarathon also finds ways to give back to our community. All registration fees collected this year with a total amounting to RM22,000 from both the Professional and Junior categories will go towards supporting two charity homes, Shelter Home and the Monfort Boys Town in providing shelter and industrial skills training to give these children hope for a brighter future,” continued Donny.

The seventh edition of the photo competition was held in a different format this year. Participants were tested on their interpretation of the three themes which was randomly selected live onstage. At the pre-set schedule, participants had to return to the staging area to upload their images before the next theme is announced, to facilitate a smoother uploading process of all images. The judging process was then held concurrently, marking another first for Canon PhotoMarathon Malaysia.

The judging panel this year included renowned photographers and leaders of the industry; Harry Woo, President of the Photographic Society of Malaysia, Zahari Zakaria, Photo Editor, Media Prima, Arthur Chen, Publisher of Digital Camera Magazine Malaysia, and Tuan Syed Agil Syed Jaafar, Head of Editorial, Utusan Malaysia.

Azril Azam Bin Abdul Rahim, the Open category’s Grand Prize winner’s photos stood out to the judges with its brilliance in capturing the themes, “Earth”, “Black and White”, “Little Things That Matter” given today. Ignatius Kong Hai Yuen, Ho Kek Kai and Mario Jr. Luna Legaspi won the First, Second and Third prizes respectively.

The first ever Junior category’s First Prize went to Ong Kai Wei and Suraya Batrisyia bt Roslan and Choong Wai Er took home the Second and Third prizes respectively.

The winners of the first theme of “Earth” went to Tee Meng Chuan, second theme “Black and White” winner was Fong Yau Hon and the third theme “Little Things That Matter” was taken by Mohd Samsi Bin Sumairi.

The Grand and First Prize winners of the Open category will be going on a once in a lifetime trip to Kansai, Japan to attend a photo clinic conducted by the award winning photographer, Triston Yeo. Besides this incredible opportunity, the Grand Prize winner was also the proud owner of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III with the 24-70mmF4L IS lens while the First Prize winner took home the Canon EOS 70D with 18-135mm STM lens and other prizes.

The Second Prize winner won Canon EOS 700D with 18-135mm STM lens while the Third Prize winner took home the Canon EOS M with EFM18-55mm lens, EF22mm lens and Speedlite 90EX flash. The Theme winners walked away with PowerShot G1X models for their creativity.

The Junior category’s First prize winner took home the EOS 100D with the 18-55mm STM lens. The Second Prize winner will be the proud owner of a Canon EOS M with the EF-M18-55mm lens and the Third Prize winner, a Canon PowerShot N among other prizes.
