BEIJING, 24 August 2008 – Lenovo today described a successful deployment of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games marketing programs, including product placement, advertising, news media coverage, and innovations in computer hardware and technical support. These programs build on Lenovo’s excellent technical support of the Olympic Games.
At least two studies by third-party organizations show Lenovo’s leadership in marketing activation among Worldwide Partners of the Olympic Games, including Dow Jones Insight and Global Language Monitor. This leadership has helped Lenovo leverage the impact of the Olympic Games on its global brand.
“Looking back at the history of the Olympic Games, there are numerous examples of how the Olympic Movement can create a powerful impact on the launch of a new global brand,” said Timo Lumme, director of television and marketing services for the International Olympic Committee. “In the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the company that continues that tradition is Lenovo.
“Lenovo has directed its hardware, service, and marketing programs so skillfully at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games that the IOC believes this sponsorship will have a long-term, lasting impact on the Lenovo brand,” Lumme said.
Lenovo’s successful support of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games started with excellent operation of computing hardware as part of one of the most complex information technology systems in the history of the Olympic Games. The more than 30,000 pieces of computing equipment, supported by nearly 600 Lenovo engineers and technicians, have been critical to the success of the Games.
Lenovo built on this foundation with a comprehensive marketing approach that touched all aspects of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. These included:
· Creating seven Internet Lounges used throughout Olympic Villages in Beijing, Qingdao and Hong Kong, averaging more than 3,000 athlete visits per day.
· Creating the first-ever PC service centers for journalists, where they could get their PCs fixed for free, regardless of brand.
· Becoming the first Worldwide Partner in history to design the Olympic Torch.
· Advancing the Olympic Movement through blogging and personal computing. During these first games in which athletes can blog throughout the games, Lenovo created the “Voices of the Olympic Games” website, averaging more than 50,000 visitors a day and transforming the way people connect with the Olympic Games.
· Creating a “store inside a store” at the Olympic Superstore, where the first licensed technology products at the Olympic Games were sold.
· Creating a city-wide presence in Beijing, starting with 175 billboards at the new international airport terminal, and continuing with more than 500 buses wrapped in Lenovo advertising and another 500 billboards throughout the city.
· Operating Lenovo’s Showcase on the Olympic Green at capacity since opening day, averaging more than 4,000 visitors per day. Lenovo generated crowds with a combination of the Lenovo-designed Olympic Torch; exciting, interactive technology exhibits; and engaging performances by dancers, musicians, acrobats and other artists on the company's outdoor stage.
· Partnering with the Right to Play philanthropy for Olympic Games athletes, creating a global auction of Olympic Games sports memorabilia signed by athletes. All proceeds from the auction support Right to Play, in an example of the creative use of personal computing technology to support a good cause.
“We have worked to be comprehensive, creative and cutting-edge in our marketing activation,” said Deepak Advani, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Lenovo. “From our billboard advertisements to our teams of brand ambassadors to our multiple sites on the Olympic Green, Lenovo’s goal is to support and engage people everywhere who use personal computers to create the world’s greatest ideas.”
One of the most notable examples of Lenovo’s Olympic marketing activation is the Olympic Torch. The IOC and the Beijing Olympic Olympic Organizing Committee announced Lenovo’s “Cloud of Promise” design for the torch in April 2007.
“The Olympic Torch demonstrates Lenovo’s design leadership, just as our flawless operation of the Olympic Games technology systems demonstrates world-class products and brand,” said Alice Li, vice president of Olympic marketing, Lenovo.

3Com’s H3C Provides IP Networking Infrastructure for Beijing Olympic Games
MALAYSIA, 08 August 2008 – As a leading Internet architecture solution innovator based in China, H3C Technologies is actively getting itself involved in a number of the major networking infrastructure projects in Beijing, the venue city for the coming 2008 Olympic Games.
H3C has been the principal technology partner on several Olympic-related projects including a “Good Luck Beijing” pre-event in Hong Kong, the Beijing public transportation surveillance system upgrading, the new terminal building’s network for Beijing International Airport, and Sohu.com’s video-on-demand service portal.
To better host the Olympic Games, Beijing City has invested a lot into the construction of infrastructures such as the spectacular stadiums of ‘Bird’s Nest’ and the ‘Water Cube’. Meanwhile, efforts to upgrade Internet and video surveillance structures are being made to facilitate the convenience and security for all participants.
H3C offers a comprehensive line of networking solutions that deliver Olympic-quality reliability, stability and performance to several key safety and information projects. Ranging from switches to IP surveillance systems, H3C’s high-end products were able to meet the stringent requirements set by the project owners.
Beijing Capital International Airport
The Beijing Capital International Airport is the first contact point welcoming visitors from around the world to China’s first Olympic Games. Increasing the capacity of the city’s international airport was a priority, so a third terminal is being added. H3C solutions are powering a new 10G Ethernet backbone to support its routine operations, as well as real-time production and management services, including ground emergency command, airport terminal broadcasting and flight information displays.
During the planning and design of the network, H3C borrowed substantive experiences from the airport construction projects of China and other countries. The company worked closely with the airport to meet their special service requirements for different systems from departure to broadcasting, jointly improving the airport service system solution.
Beijing Public Transportation
Once in Beijing, visitors will require a safe, reliable transportation system to help get to and from the different Olympic venues. Beijing Public Transportation Group (BPT Group) worked with H3C to build an IP monitoring system to monitor bus stations and parking lots, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines, and special Olympic bus lines. With 10,000 monitoring points, the system provides real-time security monitoring for the entire transportation system, as well as several value-added services including vehicle dispatching, arrival and departure monitoring, VoIP access, office automation, IC card auto ticket examination, electronic route information and station billboards. In addition, wireless cameras will be installed on buses running some of the Olympics bus lines to ensure they meet special requirements.
With over 500 parking lots and thousands of buses, the BPT Group needed to expand their surveillance capabilities quickly and at a low cost. The H3C system integrates the monitoring of media terminals, network access, and IP storage with system management software. By basing its system on the Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON) optical transmission technology, the H3C solution allows multiple terminals to share the same line of optical fiber, greatly reducing operational and engineering costs. H3C is the first vendor to use EPON exclusively to create fully integrated, end-to-end video monitoring solutions.
“Good Luck Beijing”- Hong Kong
In preparation for the 2008 Games, 42 special “Good Luck Beijing” sporting events were held at venues across China. Hong Kong, which will be the site of the Olympic equestrian competition, held the “Good Luck Beijing” – HKSAR 10th Anniversary Cup on 11-13 August 2007. The Cup marked the first time riders from leading equestrian nations competed at an event in Hong Kong. It also provided an opportunity to test the security and emergency response during live events at 2008 Olympic venues.
H3C’s IP Video Surveillance solution (iVS) was installed at the Hong Kong Olympic Equestrian Venues in Shatin and Beas River to help ensure the security and safety of over 5,000 participants. The deployment of H3C’s iVS system for the HKSAR 10th Anniversary Cup was the first all-in-one IP surveillance solution installed in Hong Kong. “This total solution is widely used by customers in China, but H3C is the only vendor currently offering it in Hong Kong,” said Jessie Wu, President, Global Marketing & Sales, H3C.
“H3C saw a need for a total solution based on an open architecture that integrates network computers, communication systems and storage systems. All in all, IP Video Surveillance Solution offered the HKSAR 10th Anniversary Cup the ability to complete more surveillance-related tasks with higher efficiency,” said KC Leung, Head of Technology, Equestrian Events (Hong Kong) of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad Company Limited.
SOHU
China’s many avid Olympics fans will have unparalleled access to real-time news and video clips via SOHU’s H3C-powered video-on-demand (VOD) “Watch-and-Listen” blogsite. As the official Chinese website of the Beijing Olympics, SOHU is responsible for delivering up-to-the-minute news, results and footage to the Internet. H3C’s IToIP solutions enable SOHU’s users to receive follow the exciting sports action anywhere, anytime from their PC’s or mobile devices.
Built on the Storage Area Network (SAN) storage architecture, the H3C network storage solution enables fast access to mass data (video in three seconds) and centralized management of storage devices for the SOHU “Watch-and-Listen” blogs. The unified Web interface will automatically raise an alarm once the system goes faulty, allowing network administrator to manage devices using CallHome feature, which significantly shortens the downtime and secure high-speed video download, making the VOD service more reliable and the storage system expansion more cost-efficient.
H3C’s work on these Olympic projects further confirms its international leadership in IP technology solutions. By developing cutting-edge technologies and taking advantage of open architectures, H3C’s IP-based storage and networking solutions deliver greater flexibility, performance and reliability to meet stringent international standards for quality.

Concluding a Year-Long Test Schedule, Lenovo Gears Up for Final Technology Rehearsal Before Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
Lenovo Trains 580 Engineers to Support Computing Equipment at the Games
MALAYSIA, May 29, 2008 – After a full year of Beijing-based international athletic competitions used to test the technology infrastructure supporting the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Lenovo is preparing for the final and most grueling test of all, a three-day comprehensive technology rehearsal on June 10-12 that will involve more than 300 Lenovo engineers and thousands of Lenovo PCs.
More than 20,000 pieces of Lenovo equipment have been put to the test in more than one year of “Good Luck Beijing” athletic competitions, including Olympic sports ranging from archery and diving to synchronized swimming and taekwondo.
As a worldwide Olympic partner and the exclusive computing equipment provider, Lenovo is providing the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) with more than 30,000 pieces of equipment including desktop and notebook PCs, monitors and servers. During the Good Luck Beijing events, much of this equipment underwent extensive testing and fine-tuning, providing invaluable hands-on experience for many of the 580 Lenovo engineers who will be working on-site in August.
With the test events complete on June 1, the final preparatory event will be the comprehensive technical rehearsal conducted by BOCOG on June 10-12. The physical equipment supporting the Olympic Games and the thousands of personnel who oversee it will participate in “Technical Rehearsal 2” (TR2), simulating three of the busiest days at the Games. The rehearsal will force participants to practice managing an array of potential problems and scenarios – missing equipment, slashed cables, security breaches, power outages, etc. Nearly 95 percent of Lenovo’s computing equipment at every venue will be deployed over the three days of intensive practice and problem solving.
“Lenovo is delighted to report that the successful Good Luck Beijing test events proved the strength of our hardware backbone and our team of technicians that will support every aspect of the Beijing Games,” said Alice Li, Lenovo vice president of Olympic Marketing. “The next challenge will be the comprehensive rehearsal, where BOCOG will flip the ‘on’ switch, implementing all the technology systems and looking for anything that can possibly go wrong. We know that our PCs, which are the best-engineered in the world, as well as our team of engineers, will meet this challenge with ingenuity and determination.”
Lenovo products were carefully chosen for the Olympic Games technology solution and the Good Luck Beijing events have proven their features are well-suited to the challenge. For example, the primary desktop PC – the ThinkCentre M55e – was tested in every venue, including the Beijing National Aquatics Center, often called the “Water Cube.” These PCs are particularly adaptable to damp environments and operated optimally during extreme situations - up to 90 percent humidity used in testing. Similarly, the equipment to be used at outdoor competition venues has been specially selected to withstand the unique challenges of Beijing’s summer, including high temperatures, dust and humidity.
The test events also allowed the team to successfully put the equipment through endurance tests. During the course of the 2008 Olympic Games, 302 competitive events will be held in 17 days, with one competition following closely on the heels of another. Equipment in the competition venues will be running constantly from 6 AM to midnight, and equipment in non-competition venues will run continuously for 24 hours a day. Much of Lenovo’s equipment will run critical applications such as the Games Management System which handles many important functions including accreditation, transportation, sports entries, qualifications and staff and volunteer deployment. The remainder of the Lenovo equipment will support the company’s personnel on site and Lenovo Internet lounges in the Athlete’s Village and more.
To operate and maintain this complex computing infrastructure, Lenovo is undergoing a massive training program to equip 580 of its finest engineers with the skills required to ensure smooth operation. After several days of classes, they are tested in the field where they perform rigorous hands-on exercises and mock scenarios. All of the engineers are trained to operate and troubleshoot the notebooks and desktops used for the Olympic Games. Those working on the Lenovo servers receive an extra two days of training. In addition to this preparation, BOCOG will conduct separate training sessions with the engineering teams from Lenovo and other Olympic partners to ensure successful execution during the Olympic Games.
