Highlighted customer testimonials below - learn about their experiences and savings at www.sun.com/customers
· "Motionbox offers something unique - a safe, friendly, private online resource for individuals and families to store and share video in vivid HD quality. This naturally demands that we engineer a well tuned, highly responsive storage environment, and we have built just that around the Sun Storage 7410. My team was immediately abuzz when the 7000 series hit the market last fall. This solution was the best deal on high-capacity storage that we’d ever seen. Most important, however, the 7000 series is equally adept at serving both high-traffic videos and the 'long tail' of user-generated content - all on a single unit. Because our 7410 cluster comes configured with sizeable amounts of read & write cache, it can effortlessly serve content and support lots of transcoding operations across a wide spectrum of video usage patterns and the full path of a video’s lifecycle. Sun unified storage gives us the flexibility to tune and configure multiple instances of the same device for throughput or capacity or whatever our needs may be. Thanks, too, to the Sun Startup Essentials program, where I got the opportunity to discuss in-depth with Sun engineers to validate the best storage architecture to meet our intense demands." - Chris Brown, VP Engineering, Motionbox. Inc.
· "During our evaluation of the OpenStorage 7410, we found that the combination of read and write biased flash storage and disk outperformed systems with four to five times the number of spinning disks (and without any read write flash). We are still evaluating these units for use in a customer facing capacity, but we are definitely going to use these units in a data retention and data processing capacity. The expandability and the analytics capabilities offered by the Sun Storage 7410 units are very enticing to us, and may allow us to make some major changes to the architecture of our storage systems," said Joshua Barratt, CTO, Media Temple.
· "After testing and optimizing the Sun unified storage solution, we were surprised and impressed to discover that Sun's open solution was interoperable with our existing broadcast infrastructure. By prioritizing video applications, we were also able to use the solution with virtualization in our IT operation. We had considered a competitive NAS solution, but the cost was 25% greater and didn't give us the necessary throughput. Ultimately, the combination of exceptional value, capacity, tuning of applications and Sun's analytics led us to consolidate all data for both our IT and broadcast infrastructures on a Sun unified storage system," said Regis Harrison, director of production and technologies, TV5 Canada.
In addition, over 30 new independent software vendors and partners have certified applications for the Sun Unified Storage Systems, including VMware and Symantec. With new tools like the Hands on Lab, the channel has had a major impact in the dramatic sales growth for the Sun Unified Storage Systems.
New Mid-Market Solution for Sun Storage 7000
Sun also recently expanded its portfolio of mid-market solutions with the introduction of an Open Archive solution that pairs the Sun Storage 7110 and 7210 Unified Storage Systems and ultra-scalable Sun Fire X4140 and Sun Fire X4240 servers with industry-leading Symantec Enterprise Vault 8 software. The resulting Open Archive solution for mid-sized companies delivers tested and optimized storage and server configurations that make it easy for customers to very simply archive many different types of data, such as files/records, email, instant messaging and sharepoint content while ensuring data integrity. By using four times less power and half the footprint, the Sun and Symantec Open Archive Solution can significantly reduce storage costs, minimizing management complexity and increasing storage ROI. SUN MICROSYSTEMS COMMENTARY: **IT TRENDS FOR 2009**
CP Loo, Managing Director, Sun Microsystems Malaysia
Overview
In 2008, Sun continued to achieve growth in emerging markets, steadily seeding countries such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China with tools, training and open source technology to support their success and innovation.
In 2009, Sun sees businesses and governments in emerging markets increasingly using the latest open source technologies to develop innovations with minimal costs and investments. Sun’s open source strategy and industry standard offerings complement the needs of customers in the emerging markets, who look to Sun’s solutions to heighten their business performance amid rising pressures to control IT costs in the current global financial environment. By enabling developers in these markets to create new solutions, Sun is cultivating its long term growth in these markets while making a strong contribution to the local IT industry’s development and competitiveness.
IT Trends for 2009
**GREEN IT**
Eco
Energy efficiency to reduce watts/compute workload will continue to be a priority in 2009, given high ROI and overall energy limitations. Datacenter blueprints will continue to evolve with aggressive virtualization saving potentially 2X-10X the savings of facility efficiency measures. Power management will be used to throttle down servers (and other IT equipment) when not in use, something not done effectively today.
High temperature data centers, some without any mechanical cooling systems, will be discussed more in 2009 (but very few will be implemented). And collaboration will continue to drive progress forward through new standards (The Green Grid), best practices and open tools (OpenEco.org), as we scramble to meet energy and climate goals. Sun will continue to innovate on eco in hardware (servers and network), software (inc. efficient coding), services (datacenter design) and partnerships.
**THE CLOUD**
Cloud Computing
For 25 years, Sun has been guided by the vision that "the network is the computer." With the explosion of cloud computing in 2008, that vision is truer than ever. We are just at the beginning of this next evolution of the Internet. Sun expects to see cloud computing continue to impact the way IT infrastructure is designed and delivered to meet the varied needs of Web, business and HPC users. As enterprises and developers weed through the hype and figure out how to take advantage of the efficiencies of the cloud model, security, open standards and data portability will become increasingly important.
**HARDWARE**
Mid-range Computing
IDC estimates midrange server spend at US$15B in 2009, accounting for nearly 1/4 of the overall server spend. Customers have traditionally relied on midrange servers to deliver the scalability and reliability to handle business critical applications like OLTP and CRM, without much regard for energy efficiency.
The industry is beginning to see a shift in midrange capabilities -- instead of just being miniaturized versions of big iron -- the new midrange like Sun's SPARC Enterprise T5440 server will pack a lot more performance in a midrange package.
There are also the added benefits of reduced operating costs and space and energy savings -- a huge value in today's economy. These new platforms are redefining the midrange. In 2009 businesses will continue to demand a right-sized solution for consolidation and virtualization with the ability to scale. Expect to see Sun challenge the competition as the redefinition of the midrange extends into the storage market, offering customers peak performance and energy efficiency.
High Performance Computing (HPC)
In recent years, HPC has become a hot topic within IT, and businesses worldwide have begun to look towards tangible HPC solutions for their customers’ needs. Data-intensive industries like oil & gas and manufacturing are seeing the solid benefits to not only HPC processing, but also storage.
Open Storage
Open Storage will continue to grow as one of the most innovative and relevant topics affecting the storage community in 2009. Storage, currently a US$40BN dollar industry, is today going through a shift similar to that of the server market that occurred in the mid-90's. Customer demand for state-of-the-art storage systems with open architectures and easy deployment will dramatically increase.
Given the nature of the financial markets, cost economics have never been so important and will continue to be an important part of the buying decision in the coming year. Sun is spearheading the open storage revolution by combining open-source software with industry-standard system components to reduce storage costs by up to 75% over traditional market solutions.
**SOFTWARE**
Open Source
Open Source is definitely the top technology trend that has and will continue to have an impact on Sun and our customers. In companies across India, China, Eastern Europe, South and Central America, companies are dominantly using open source to create enormous wealth.
In China and India alone, there are more than a million software developers, many of whom cannot afford punitive technology license fees, so they default to open source software, like MySQL, Ubuntu Linux, OpenSolaris, Java or OpenOffice.org. Armed with these and the zeal to succeed and overcome adversity, the global market is open to them. Likewise, it is also open to businesses that want to leverage these same technologies that power some of the world’s most innovative companies such as Amazon, Google, Nokia and Sun Microsystems.
Many governments worldwide, including Malaysia, Indonesia, India, and South Africa now embrace the open document formats to help bring costs down and ensure all citizens have equal access to important material years from now. Research firm Gartner projects that by 2012, 90% of the world's companies will be using open source software – globally. Companies are realizing now that progress rests with their willingness to take a position on open source technology.
Virtualization Management
In 2008, virtualization became widely accepted as the premier consolidation tool to increase hardware utilization and decrease power and cooling costs. Gartner recently identified virtualization as the top strategic technology for organizations in 2009, and – in the current tough economic climate - businesses will continue to rely on virtualization coupled with effective management as the simplest and most cost-effective strategy for dealing with consolidation. Sun’s xVM virtualization management portfolio, introduced in September, provides open source virtualization software to help customers virtualize from the desktop to the datacenter at half the cost of the competition.

Sun Microsystems: Post-Budget Commentary – Malaysian National Budget 2009
CP Loo, Managing Director, Sun Microsystems Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur 29 August 2008
The National Budget 2009 truly reinforces the Malaysian Government’s commitment to alleviate the increasing hardship faced by the rakyat and, at the same time reflects its continual investment for growth to ensure the long-term productivity and resilience of the nation.
Sun especially lauds the Government’s efforts to mitigate the effects of inflation on the cost of living. Specifically, Sun is appreciative of the Government’s decision to grant corporate and personal tax relief of 1% down to 27% and 12% respectively, effective the year of assessment 2009. Tax reliefs provide an incentive for Malaysian professionals to stay in, or return to the country and contribute towards revitalizing the economy.
In addition, Sun is confident that the ICT-related incentives in this year’s Budget will promote an even more vibrant ICT environment and boost the country’s next phase of growth. In particular, we welcome the Government’s decision to shorten the claimable period from two years to one year under the Accelerated Capital Allowance on expenses incurred on upgrading or replacing ICT equipment. This move enables businesses to remain competitive and helps increase productivity.
Sun is also heartened by the Government’s support in the growth of SMEs thus far. Apart from the RM1.2 bil financing facilities allotted for SMEs to upgrade their processes or IT equipment, SMBs would find the one year Accelerated Capital Allowance reduction and the ability to claim full Capital Allowance on all small value assets within a year, extremely positive news. These benefits will not only facilitate cash flow issues faced by SMBs but stimulate the domestic economy and encourage cross-border economic activities.
Furthermore, Sun applauds the Government’s continued focus on enhancing human capital development to make Malaysia more competitive and attractive to foreign investors. Sun believes the RM2.4 billion allocation to enhance facilities as well as undertake training and skills programmes will not only spur entrepreneurial activities amongst unemployed graduates, but also increase the demand for skilled and knowledge workers in the country as we transform towards a knowledge-based economy.
Moving forward, Sun would like to see subsidies allocated for software developers as an encouragement to commercialise their ideas in the global market. We also hope to see additional rebates for companies which seek ways to reduce power and consumption costs and adopt green technology within their organizations. This is particularly relevant to counter escalating energy costs.

“The market for commodity silicon and the devices they power is well into the tens of billions of dollars,” said David Yen, executive vice president of Microelectronics for Sun. “The UltraSPARC T2 processor also makes possible a new breed of compact, power-efficient, highly integrated devices—going beyond servers to routers, switches, network devices, medical imaging, industrial printing and more. With UltraSPARC T2 technology, we can bring the speed and scalability of chip multithreading into much wider use—and provide welcome alternatives to companies that want commodity economics without commodity performance.”
"We're at a historic point in computing, moving away from sequential processing to multicore designs," said Professor Dave Patterson, Pardee Chair of Computer Science for the University of California at Berkeley. "Hence, we need to invent new ways to evaluate these new parallel systems. Our initial experiments suggest that Niagara 2 has the highest performance, is the most power efficient and is the most 'software friendly' of the processors we've tested."
The UltraSPARC T2 is the industry's first processor to bring together the key functions of multiple systems—virtualisation, processing, networking, security, floating point units and accelerated memory access. Integrating these elements on a single piece of silicon reduces cost and increases performance, reliability and energy efficiency—making it the superior choice for a diversity of workloads, from networking equipment to high-performance computing or storage devices. As a general-purpose processor, the UltraSPARC T2 also provides support for the massively threaded, open source Solaris™ operating system, and other real-time operating systems, as well as future versions of Ubuntu Linux, bringing a massive community of developers and productivity to the growing market.
“We are excited about exploring the capabilities of the UltraSPARC T2 processor,” said Mark Murphy, global alliances manager at Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu. “We certify Ubuntu on the SPARC architecture as we believe it is at the forefront of what's possible in processing and for many Ubuntu users this is of critical importance. UltraSPARC T2 shows Sun continues to push the boundaries and we are proud to be alongside pushing with them.”
This next generation of the UltraSPARC family of processors also extends its lead in eco performance, bringing Sun's revolutionary CoolThreads™ chip multithreading (CMT) technology to the UltraSPARC T2 processor, powered by fewer than two watts per thread. At one-tenth to one-thirtieth the power consumption of competitive offerings, the UltraSPARC T2 processor sets the gold standard for green computing and efficiency, combining the industry’s lowest power consumption with double the cores, 16 times the threads, 4 times the throughput, with on-chip network and security functionality. Bottom line: The UltraSPARC T2 processor has the potential to save systems builders and their end users millions of dollars on skyrocketing power, cooling and space expense.
A breakthrough in architectural design, the UltraSPARC T2 processor delivers an unprecedented level of integrated system functions on a single chip:
High-throughput processing – Eight cores and eight threads per core accelerate throughput as shown by two world-record, single-chip SPEC CPU scores, based on tests that delivered 78.3 est. SPECint_rate2006 and a 62.3 est. SPECfp_rate2006. The UltraSPARC T2 processor has twice the thread count of Sun's UltraSPARC T1 processor, which recently set a world record on ten Sun Blade(TM) T6300 Server Modules delivering 8253.21 SPECjAppServer2004 JOPS@Standard*
Networking – Dual, virtualisable, multithreaded 10 Gigabit-per-second Ethernet ports with built-in packet classification ensure fast access to networks and server-to-server communications
Security - Eight cryptographic acceleration units and a total of 10 independent functions address ever-heightening security needs, including NSA-approved algorithms, without a performance penalty
Computation - Eight floating point units extend the benefits of CMT to high-performance computing workloads for scientific applications; world record single-chip SPECfp_rate2006 and world-record single-chip SPECompM2001 scores
Input/Output – Eight lanes of industry-standard PCI Express I/O speed applications like streaming media, database read/write and data back-up
Memory access – Quad memory controllers deliver more than 50 Gigabytes-per-second of memory access
Software support – The massively threaded Solaris OS takes excellent advantage of the highly threaded processors and enables open and cost-effective virtualisation
In production now, Sun's new UltraSPARC T2 processor offers more consolidation and virtualisation flexibility than any processor in its class. With up to 64 logical domains per processor, customers can achieve unprecedented levels of efficiency by consolidating many physically separate systems onto a single UltraSPARC T2 processor-based platform.
