NetApp’s Vision for Software-Defined Storage

Software-defined storage (SDS) is one component of the emerging software-defined data center (SDDC) model, which focuses on agility in delivering IT services to application owners while improving operational and IT resource efficiency. Akin to virtual machines and server virtualization, clustered Data ONTAP abstracts physical storage into a set of Storage Virtual Machines (SVM; formerly known as vServer). This allows NetApp to deliver native multi-tenant, policy-based storage services via programmable APIs and application integrations. Clustered Data ONTAP is the first storage and data management solution that makes the promise of SDS attainable today.

“CIOs are moving from builders of applications and operators of data centers to brokers of information services to the business,” said Jay Kidd, senior vice president and chief technology officer, NetApp. “This new role requires technologies that can speed IT response time and drive operational and resource efficiency. Clustered Data ONTAP fills this need today, providing the key building block that delivers the benefits of software-defined storage models and will replace existing slow and inefficient siloed approaches. Our new software gives IT unsurpassed agility, including the flexibility to deploy across multiple platforms.”

Quality of service and data protection enhancements help IT to automate application provisioning based on service level and to realize operational benefits from pre-set policy-based security and delegation. These features and capabilities enable IT teams to scale infrastructure to fit business needs, decrease the cost to run applications, and achieve higher levels of operational efficiency.

Customer Momentum with Clustered Data ONTAP

Clustered Data ONTAP offers compelling value to both the enterprise private cloud and public cloud service providers. The software’s unified architecture services a range of workloads–from the most demanding to the most unique across virtualized environments, scale-out NAS, and enterprise applications. During the past year companies across all industries have adopted clustered Data ONTAP with a 4x increase in clustered nodes resulting in 100% quarter over quarter growth of deployments. Cloud providers, whose business reputation depends on continuously running operations, are bringing centralized management to the data center with FlexPod® from NetApp and Cisco with clustered Data ONTAP.

Areas of high adoption of clustered Data ONTAP include:

• Virtualized environments. Organizations use private clouds to consolidate multiple applications into a shared environment, so IT is delivered like a service provider. Clustered Data ONTAP's unified architecture services a broad range of workloads on a standard platform.
• Scale-out NAS. Traditionally, NAS has been used to meet the requirements for storing files on a network for access by a few or for backup purposes. With clustered Data ONTAP, customers can grow from a few terabytes to tens of petabytes without reconfiguring running applications.
• Enterprise applications. As IT becomes integral to business operations, the impact of downtime on tier 1 applications negatively affects budgets and productivity. Clustered Data ONTAP improves service levels over the lifecycle of an application with the ability to dynamically assign, promote and retire storage resources.

Clustered Data ONTAP continues to deliver up to 50% greater storage efficiency than non NetApp environments. The software also delivers greater than 99.999% availability as reported by AutoSupport™, NetApp’s global remote automation and predictive guidance solution which leverages an intelligent data analytics engine to identify at risk systems. Clustered Data ONTAP innovations are protected by more than 1,500 U.S. and international patents and patent applications.

Customer Successes Fueled by Clustered Data ONTAP

• Dominion Enterprises. Dominion Enterprises, a media and information services company, maintains websites for 40 market-leading websites with a total of more than 20 million unique monthly visitors. Each of Dominion’s customers requires a complex data storage infrastructure that support both SAN and NAS workloads. With clustered Data ONTAP, Dominion can easily move huge volumes of data—photos, videos, and other content—independent of the underlying hardware, allowing the IT team to segregate businesses, create different storage tiers, and promote or demote volumes, all transparent within a single namespace.
• Cirrity: Clustered Data ONTAP is ideal for service providers consolidating multiple applications onto a shared environment. NetApp Customer Cirrity, a leading cloud service provider for regulated industries such as healthcare, provides a backbone for its managed service provider customers, making time to service critical workloads unpredictable, and workload isolation paramount. They start up hundreds of virtual machines a week, and balance the workload across the cluster. Clustered Data ONTAP allows Cirrity to get customers up and running in a few hours and guarantee 100% uptime.
New End-to-End Services Offerings for Clustered Data ONTAP

NetApp unveiled new and refreshed services, available from NetApp and its partners that help customers realize the benefits of clustered Data ONTAP faster and increase the return on their storage investments. With NetApp clustered Data ONTAP services, businesses can align IT to their strategic goals, deploy validated architectures, accelerate their path to non-disruptive operations, and achieve high levels of operational excellence. Customers Respond Faster to Business, Enable Nondisruptive Operations, and Grow Without Limits with an Agile Data Infrastructure

NetApp and an Ecosystem of Partners Make IT Intelligent, Immortal, and Infinite So Customers Can Drive Greater Business Velocity

Kuala Lumpur – 21 June, 2012 – Global business faces a new era in which agility in IT is central to success, today and in the future. Competition, an always-on global economy, and the urgency to make data a propellant for advantage all require the CIO to provide the business with an infrastructure agile enough to cope with a very dynamic business environment. Customers want to accelerate their business with greater efficiency and productivity, but they must think differently to remove the complexity, cost, and inefficiencies of decade-old IT approaches.

Today, businesses can make agility in IT a reality. NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP), in collaboration with its partners, is introducing a new way for customers to fundamentally architect and manage their data storage infrastructure differently to be more agile. Building on years of storage efficiency and clustering innovation, new platform features, products, and technologies with the latest release of Data ONTAP® software, enable IT to better respond to changing business requirements, maintain nondisruptive operations, and grow the business without limits.

Andy Khoo, NetApp’s Country Manager for Malaysia and Brunei said, “In today’s environment, the scale, complexity and pace in which businesses are operating require a new way of thinking to enable them to compete. Businesses’ need to deliver impact faster, operate without disruption and grow without limits - all of which are critical in today’s climate. Together with our partners, NetApp delivers a single integrated platform for an agile data infrastructure that meets all three key focus points.”

He added, “NetApp has been in Malaysia for nearly 14 years and has continued to deliver business value to its 200+ Malaysian corporate & Government customers today. This latest evolution of our technology again breaks new frontiers in business value to enable our users to stay ahead of the efficiency and flexibility curve by deploying NetApp’s latest Agile Data Infrastructure components.”

Agile Data Infrastructure Makes IT Intelligent, Immortal, and Infinite

The latest release of NetApp® Data ONTAP, the industry’s largest installed storage operating system, is another milestone in an aggressive innovation agenda that is the basis for delivering new approaches to managing data for business impact. Today, NetApp is transforming data storage again with agile data infrastructure. Organizations can change the economics of IT and adapt to unpredictable data growth and dynamic business requirements with a single infrastructure that evolves as their business grows and service levels change over time. By combining rich data management with the architectural advantages of clustering, customers can make IT intelligent, immortal, and infinite.

Intelligent Data Management: Data storage can be intelligent and self-aware to deliver an immediate response to numerous rapidly changing business requirements.
Service Automation and Analytics: Self-managed storage seamlessly scales capacity, not people, with end-to-end visibility into storage infrastructure with functions to control, automate, and analyze data.

Storage Efficiency: Cost containment in an era of monumental growth means that storage efficiency is not a feature but is instead mandatory to exploit every possible opportunity to drive down costs while maintaining or boosting IT performance.

· Virtual Storage Tiering: Always-on application availability requires data-driven real-time responsiveness. Data storage needs to be optimized for agility, low cost, and maximum efficiency. A self-managing data-driven service layer allows a mixed-media storage pool to keep “hot” data on flash drives and less-active data on SATA drives. Fully automated with Flash Pools the intelligence is built into Data ONTAP, making it efficient for multiple and diverse workloads without requiring complex data classification.

Immortal Operations: Data needs a lifespan that stretches beyond the individual components of the infrastructure to deliver nondisruptive operations and maintain data accessibility 24/7.
Nondisruptive Operations: NetApp delivers a storage environment with always-on availability. Zero downtime means that business-critical applications such as Microsoft® Exchange, SharePoint®, and SQL Server®, as well as solutions from Oracle®, SAP AG, and Red Hat®, running on VMware® vSphere™ or Citrix XenServer® don’t go offline for routine upgrades and maintenance, add-ons, and even complete hardware refreshes.

Embedded Data Security: Businesses must enable appropriate access to critical data; securing both data and equipment involves multiple protection points. Multilevel security prevents unauthorized access to data and helps meet stringent regulatory requirements for data at rest.
Integrated Data Protection: “Set it and forget it” data protection improves operational efficiency by removing human error and the need for ongoing adjustments to architecture, storage systems, and protection policies in order to meet service-level agreements.

Infinite Scalability: Customers can grow their business knowing that their storage performance, capacity, and operational scalability will keep pace indefinitely, keeping investments and capabilities on track with their business.

Seamless Scaling: Scaling efficiently means scaling without the need to add more people to manage the environment, sacrifice performance, or sacrifice capacity. Infinite Volume creates a single volume that can scale up to 20PB as a single scalable entity.

Unified Architecture: One architecture for many diverse workloads gives customers the flexibility to deal with changes in storage requirements. NetApp introduced the industry’s first unified storage architecture and Data ONTAP is currently the industry’s only unified scale-out platform that delivers rich data management and data protection capabilities with clustering technology. This enables customers to scale out as well as scale up seamlessly across low-end through high-end systems in a single cluster. In addition, for remote offices, Data ONTAP Edge is a low-cost data storage system that runs in a virtual machine on the VMware vSphere® platform and is designed to complement NetApp® FAS and V-Series storage systems, managing the needs of direct-attached storage.

Secure Multi-tenancy: Secure separation of data in cloud environments takes virtualization to the next level, providing a bridge to cloud computing. Close collaboration between NetApp, Cisco, and VMware has resulted in a secure multi-tenancy solution to partition shared IT infrastructures from servers to storage.

Can you Count on Corporate Culture to Influence your Company’s Performance in these times?

Written by Simon Green, Vice President and General Manager of NetApp in Asia Pacific

For many CEOs, understanding and articulating what a company is – and how its people come together with products or services to set it apart from competitors, is what corporate culture is all about. In some circles, the mere discussion of corporate culture is guaranteed to provoke an explosive reaction from those who doubt its very existence.

The debate really starts with perceptions. Culture is often seen as 'soft' or 'touchy feely'. Whereas, in reality, it is one of the most challenging elements of managing any enterprise.

Why is this the case? It is because talking about territories, product life cycles, sales targets, margins and marketing budgets is easy. They are 'real' and 'tangible'. Culture deals with the less tangible aspects – things like attitudes and behaviours – all of which combine to create the corporate culture.

Defining corporate culture
While most managers are familiar with the concept of corporate culture, many lack a complete understanding of what it is, if there is one and how it operates. Moreover, companies do not see how influential it can be in creating a successful business and what role it can play in differentiating them from the mass of competition.

Business leaders often assume that their company's vision, values, and strategic priorities are synonymous with their company's culture. Too often, these may only be words hanging on a plaque on the wall.

Culture shows up in both visible and invisible ways. Some manifestations of this "culture" are easy to observe. You can see the dress code, work environment, perks, and titles in a company. This is the surface layer of culture. The far most powerful aspects of culture are invisible. The cultural core is composed of the values in action, standards, paradigms, worldviews, moods, internal conversations, and private conversations of the people that are part of the group. This is the foundation for all actions and decisions within a team, department, or organisation.
There is no standard corporate culture that fits every high-performing organisation. It is what 'fits' your business strategies and goals that matters.

NetApp on corporate culture

Culture is extremely powerful. The rules of the game, what behaviour is ethical and accepted, the mood of the organisation, and the enthusiasm of employees are all contained in the culture.

When culture drives positive and value-creating behaviour, it can give a company a distinct competitive advantage. Not protected or nourished, it can be a liability – a timebomb waiting to go off. If your leadership team has not pro-actively created a corporate culture to support the company's purpose, then chances are that the culture is a hidden liability.

For seven consecutive years, NetApp has been named by FORTUNE magazine as one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For”. In the latest round of results released by FORTUNE in January 2009, the company ranked number 1 on the list. This is the second year NetApp has achieved a Top 10 ranking and the third consecutive year we have been named in the Top 15. In Asia Pacific, we have emerged as one of the “Top 8 Companies to Work For” in Australia in 2008, and one of the “Best Tech Companies to Work For” in India in 2007. We feel this is a result of the company’s commitment to creating and maintaining the values of what NetApp calls a "model company”.

We have long been committed to building our corporate culture and sustaining it over the years. Our culture is the foundation of the company on which success has been built. Our success is not just attributable to the amount of solutions sold but to the people behind them, those who come up with the innovative ideas, produce and deliver the products and those who help our customers expose the value promise.

NetApp corporate culture manifests in the ways our organisation conducts its business, treats its employees, and customers; the extent to which freedom is allowed in decision making, the development of new ideas, and personal expression. The culture exposes the strength of employee commitment to our customers and shareholders.

Creating and sustaining a healthy, vibrant culture requires reinforcement of the culture through daily and proactive conversations and communications. A challenge for today's global companies is to create a strong, cohesive corporate culture that pulls all different geographical cultures together that ensures they can work as a unified team. Teams in each country have different worldviews, jargon, work hours, and ways to do things. Language is an obvious hurdle!

As there is such diverse country cultures across Asia Pacific, trying to bring a corporate culture out from headquarters to various countries and find someone who is willing to embrace that and get it started is a real challenge. The Goal is NetApp in China, NetApp in Australia, “not” NetApp Australia

Our approach has always been to educate employees on the NetApp culture, yet be sensitive to the local cultures around the globe. The education of the culture starts at the very beginning in the interview process. Prospective employees will have a minimum of six interviews. This process may seem onerous; however the goal is to provide a bi-directional process that exposes both the NetApp Culture and the prospective employees’ fit within it.

New employees in each country undertake ‘new hire’ training where they attend TOAST - ‘Training On All Special Things’. During this training, they attend a six-hour session where they come face to face with the NetApp Executive Team. The session focuses on the NetApp Culture, our values and how we function as a team. Our CEO and Executive Leadership team take a large role in making this happen and commit to this every month. Then it is about injecting simple things into the work environment. It could be something as simple as providing fruit in each office around the globe on Monday mornings or providing breakfast in the office every Friday - that helps bring the team together at the end of a work week. But you have to remember to give it a local flavour; it may be bagels in the U.S. but Dim Sum (dianxin) in China.

Local cultures are an important aspect to building and developing the corporate culture across the Asia Pacific region. It is important you find the delicate balance between corporate culture and the local country cultures, particularly when you move into North Asia. Countries such as China and South Korea are steeped in history and their cultures are very ingrained. There are differences in values and priorities and these have to be taken into consideration.

For example, at NetApp we have a very open work environment. Everyone works in an open plan office; even our CEO sits in an open air cubicle. However in some cultures, it is important to have a separate office and leaders are seen to be hierarchical in nature. So we adjust some of our values to suit the local environment.

Corporate culture is often seen by your customers as a value proposition to doing business with your company. Your corporate culture will be exposed to your customers if it is strong enough and customers will get a feel for the kind of company you are, your willingness to go beyond and will continue to choose to do business with you because of it.

Business leaders can pro-actively create a thriving culture by understanding what culture is and is not. Unfortunately, most business leaders receive little to no education on how to generate a culture. Culture building can be learned, but it takes an honest commitment from the leadership team of an organisation.

Creating and maintaining a unique work environment should be taken very seriously. It is a long term investment that will result in you attracting and retaining the best talents in your industry. It will draw customers because you’re the kind of company they want to do business with.

Corporate Culture is listed as a key ingredient of success when times are good. It is rarely discussed during tough times as Executives move to their managerial disciplines of strategy, planning and fiscal prudency. The reality is that your culture can be that secret ingredient that moves a company aggressively into an area of opportunity. How the people respond in tough times could be the difference between single- and double-digit growths – this is the hidden asset of corporate culture returning on its investment.

The Boston Globe names netapp to Globe 100’s Top Places to Work 2008

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - November 11, 2008 — NetApp, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP) today announced that it has been named one of the Top Places to Work in Massachusetts in the debut of an employee-based survey project from The Boston Globe. NetApp was ranked 46 on the overall list and was listed as number 20 on the Top 40 Small Workplaces list1. The Globe 100’s Top Places to Work magazine was published in the Sunday Globe on November 9, 2008, and can be viewed online at www.boston.com/topworkplaces.

“We are proud to be ranked as one of the top places to work in Massachusetts,” said Joel Reich, vice president and general manager, SANiSAN Business Unit at NetApp. “This award recognizes NetApp’s commitment to offering the culture, workplace environment, and benefits that our employees value.”

NetApp has been in the Boston area since 2000. In 2005, the company expanded operations with the opening of a 35,000 square foot office in Waltham. Early in 2008, NetApp added another 25,000 square feet to its Waltham facility and currently employs 205 people in the region. NetApp’s Waltham office encompasses a broad spectrum of business disciplines, including sales, engineering, product management, marketing, facilities, and human resources. This site is proud to provide support to the local community with annual contributions to the Greater Boston Food Bank, American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program, and other charitable causes.

The Globe 100’s Top Places to Work magazine highlights NetApp’s Volunteer Time Off program (VTO) for bringing community service to a new level. The VTO program offers full-time employees five days of paid time off a year to volunteer at a community organization of their choice. As recognized in the magazine, “between August 2007 and April 2008, 755 NetApp employees across the United States donated 9,936 hours to volunteer with their favorite charities, resulting in in-kind donations valued at $556,671.”

In addition to being ranked in the Globe 100’s Top Places to Work, NetApp has made FORTUNE magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list every year since 2002.

Produced by the same team that compiles the 21-year-old Globe 100 report of the best-performing public companies in Massachusetts, Top Places to Work recognizes the most progressive companies in the state based on employee opinions about company leadership, compensation and training, diversity and inclusion, career development, family-friendly flexibility, and values and ethics. Private companies and nonprofits as well as publicly held businesses are included in the analysis.

The rankings in the Globe 100’s Top Places to Work are based on survey information collected by WorkplaceDynamics, an independent company specializing in employee engagement and retention, from 120,000 employees at about 300 Massachusetts organizations. This is the first time that a Globe 100 report honors private as well as publicly held organizations.

Steve Ainsley, publisher of The Boston Globe, stated, “All the companies included in the Globe 100’s Top Places to Work deserve a great deal of recognition. It’s clear that they value their employees and make it a priority to create a positive workplace.”

To qualify for the Globe 100’s Top Places to Work, a company must have more than 100 employees in Massachusetts. Nearly 300 qualified companies accepted an invitation to participate. Rankings were composite scores calculated purely on the basis of employee responses.

netapp bolsters midrange storage offering with new fas3160 and v3160

Now Customers Can Improve Data Center Performance and Efficiency with 8Gb Fibre Channel, Flash-Ready Systems, and Integrated Support Automation Tools

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - November 5, 2008—NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) today announced the addition of the FAS3160 and V3160, strengthening its current series of midrange storage offerings for customers. As part of today’s news, NetApp unveiled its plans to enable 8Gb Fibre Channel (FC) support and provide enterprise flash Solid-State Drive (SSD) storage and flash-based caching modules for its FAS and V-Series products, helping customers to further enhance their data center infrastructures through improved performance, lower cost, and increased efficiencies.

The FAS3160 joins the FAS3140 and FAS3170 models, offering customers improved price/performance, flexibility, and scalability over other midrange storage systems. The NetApp® FAS3100 series of storage systems offers customers a single unified storage architecture to meet their needs and a common suite of application-aware software and management tools that are part of the Data ONTAP® operating system. In addition, with features such as thin provisioning, deduplication, RAID-DP®, and FlexClone®, customers can boost storage efficiency and performance without breaking the bank. The NetApp V3160 provides customers additional flexibility to meet their diverse and changing business needs by extending the features and capabilities of Data ONTAP, including deduplication, to disk arrays from other storage vendors, such as EMC and HP.

“We needed a storage solution for our virtual server hosting service to help address the challenging nature of providing data management solutions to our enterprise client base at an overall cost point that could make the model sustainable,” said Matt Stein, VP of Network Services, Primus Telecommunications Canada Inc., a NetApp FAS3100 customer. “NetApp provided us with the performance and capacity desired while also delivering increased efficiencies and flexibility through features like deduplication and thin provisioning. Combined with our VMware® solution, Primus is able to provide a high level of service to a broader base of our clientele with pricing that is competitive in the Canadian marketplace.”

8Gb FC Support Enables Customers to Better Meet Virtualization Demands
NetApp will expand its industry-leading support of 8Gb FC SAN solutions for all NetApp FAS and V-Series storage systems to deliver additional value and performance. Customers can now augment their virtualized data centers by addressing their server virtualization demands on storage networks while improving investment protection. Customers who upgrade to an 8Gb SAN can achieve higher performance and cost efficiencies because of shortened recovery times, increased productivity, faster data access, and increased throughput for virtualized servers. Also, the addition of an 8Gb target host bus adapter will enable FAS and V-Series customers to easily upgrade systems with no additional training.

“As more customers move to virtualized data centers, their networking and storage requirements become more pronounced,” said Rajiv Ramaswami, VP and general manager of the Data Center Switching Technology Group at Cisco. “With the new Cisco 8Gbps line cards for the Cisco MDS 9500 Series within NetApp’s SAN switching portfolio, customers gain better end-to-end performance, scalability, and manageability in their virtualized data centers, while at the same time fully preserving their existing investment in their SAN infrastructure."

NetApp Storage Systems Will Be Flash Ready

NetApp also unveiled today that the new FAS3160, V3160, and other FAS and V-Series storage systems will be enterprise flash ready. As part of its innovative strategy, NetApp will combine flash memory with its unified storage architecture to meet the performance needs of both leading-edge and mainstream IT professionals. Unlike other storage vendors, NetApp will give customers practical options by using flash memory both as persistent storage and also for caching purposes. Leveraging flash memory as a modular read cache in the storage controller enables customers to have a cost-effective way to optimize performance for common enterprise applications. Furthermore, NetApp’s unified storage architecture expands on the benefits of flash memory by multiplying customer savings of power, cooling, and space through the use of deduplication and other storage efficiency features.

New Integrated Suite of eSupport Tools Provides End-to-End Support

New next-generation support automation tools provide customers with additional ease of use and complete end-to-end support for all FAS and V-Series systems. This integrated support toolset combines NetApp AutoSupport, NetApp Premium AutoSupport, and the NetApp Remote Support Diagnostics Tool to provide customers with high levels of storage availability and performance.

NetApp AutoSupport is recognized as the industry’s leading “call home” tool and a built-in system monitoring capability available to all NetApp customers at no additional charge. By monitoring hundreds of system parameters with the ability to, in most cases, resolve issues without customer intervention, NetApp AutoSupport catches small issues before they become bigger problems that can negatively impact customer applications. Premium AutoSupport complements the baseline AutoSupport capability by providing the customer with the capability to do storage configuration management, autogenerated software upgrade plans, trend analysis, and performance trending. The NetApp Remote Support Diagnostics Tool provides faster remote 24x7 diagnostics and case resolution by NetApp Technical Support, resulting in reduced customer involvement in diagnostics and troubleshooting.

“NetApp has created support automation tools that help ensure its support infrastructure meets the needs of mission-critical enterprise environments,” said Matt Healey, research manager, IDC Software and Hardware Support Services. “With new product and technologies, customers now more than ever require support that is 24x7, includes minimal customer intervention, provides rapid response and resolution, and is highly secure. NetApp is addressing these needs with the new eSupport suite.”

“Data center customers are looking for ways to reduce their costs, increase efficiencies, and boost performance,” said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Solutions Marketing, NetApp. “Our flash roadmap and expanded 8Gb FC support are two key components that deliver these benefits to customers. With our unique approach to flash storage, customers will not only experience streamlined management and increased performance, but will do so while reducing their power, cooling, and space needs. At the same time, 8Gb FC support enables customers to fully utilize their virtualized environments in order to take advantage of the cost efficiencies and increased production associated with this architecture.”

NetApp Drives Down Costs and Improves Efficiency For Data Center Backup and Recovery with Deduplication on NetApp VTL Systems

New Offering Extends Deduplication Across Entire Portfolio as NetApp Crosses 16,000 Deployed Systems with Deduplication

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - October 29, 2008 - NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) today announced the availability of deduplication on NetApp® Virtual Tape Library (VTL) systems, enabling customers to lower the disk capacity required to backup any storage system, including EMC and HP, up to 95%1. NetApp delivers unparalleled cost savings for traditional backup environments by reducing tape media usage and tape drive infrastructure and, now, through highly efficient usage of VTL disk storage through deduplication. With the addition of deduplication on VTL, NetApp offers the most complete deduplication portfolio, spanning backup, archive, and primary storage applications. More than 16,000 NetApp systems have been deployed with deduplication by 3,500 customers.

VTL systems are designed to augment traditional backup environments by providing a disk-based backup tier between backup applications and physical tape libraries that generate tapes for off-site retention. With NetApp VTL deduplication, now customers can identify and eliminate redundant backup data and reduce capacity requirements by 95%. NetApp VTL deduplication is specifically designed for backup environments and, similar to existing NetApp storage efficiency capabilities, VTL deduplication is a native component of the system’s software, as opposed to competing bolt-on approaches. Having deduplication embedded natively within the storage system makes it easier for customers to set up, manage, and upgrade systems and realize the benefits of reducing capacity needs. NetApp deduplication is available to new and existing customers at no additional charge.

“Deduplication has proven to be an invaluable addition to our VTL deployment with NetApp,” said Svein Thon, service line manager with EDB Business Partner ASA. With headquarters in Oslo, Norway, EDB Business Partner is one of the largest IT groups in the Nordic countries, with more than 40 years experience in serving leading Nordic businesses. “We were able to turn it on quickly and realize 95% reduction in capacity needed to backup Oracle® Databases and file system data. Combining deduplication with the speed and scale of NetApp VTL has allowed us to improve the efficiency of our backup operations and drive down power costs in our data center.”

Deduplication complements a suite of capabilities embedded in NetApp VTL that are designed to increase the efficiency of enterprise backup and recovery, including:

##Ten times faster backups fueled by enterprise-class performance and scale2

##Fifty percent reduction in tape media costs provided by direct integration with tape libraries that substantially improves tape utilization3

##Fifty percent or more reduction in tape library infrastructure by maximizing physical tape resources through efficient direct tape creation from NetApp VTL3

##Ten times faster restores enabled by seamless integration with leading backup applications, including Symantec™ NetBackup™, CommVault Simpana, BakBone NetVault, Syncsort Backup Express, and Atempo Time Navigator4

##Simplified management through a highly scalable, modular architecture built on NetApp’s single platform solution

This set of capabilities yields dramatic storage and operational efficiencies to reduce the cost of backup with highly scalable VTL systems capable of storing up to 10 petabytes of backup data.

“Today, enterprises are adopting technologies that increase efficiency and cut costs from their operations,” said Lauren Whitehouse, analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “NetApp VTL not only delivers on that promise with its deduplication feature, but helps organizations realize savings and improve the backup process by focusing more broadly on the entire backup environment, including disk, tape, and operating costs.”

According to ESG research, data deduplication tops VTL users’ new features wish list, and features such as deduplication, encryption, and replication are becoming increasingly important in users’ decisions to purchase VTL over other types of disk-based solutions. NetApp’s VTL offering complements its replication-based backup solution designed to serve NetApp storage environments and integrate directly with leading business applications and virtual server environments. With these offerings, NetApp enables disk-based backup for more than 5,000 customers worldwide.

“Customers are reassessing their data center backup operations now more than ever,” said Jay Kidd, chief marketing officer at NetApp. “Tape will continue to have its place, but deduplication and tape optimization capabilities make disk-based storage a highly effective way to reduce the ongoing IT expense of backup and recovery. NetApp VTL reduces both the disk and tape infrastructure requirements for large backup operations, offering customers the ability to get more speed and scale out of their existing infrastructure at a fraction of the cost."

NetApp guarantees customers will use 50% less storage for virtual environments

Unique NetApp Storage-Efficiency Features Help Customers Reduce Overall Storage Capacity

Singapore— October 16, 2008— In an unprecedented announcement, NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) offers a guarantee* to customers that they will use 50% less storage in their virtual environments with NetApp® compared to traditional storage. NetApp wants to assure customers who choose NetApp and leverage its unique storage-efficiency technologies that they will reduce their overall storage usage while improving performance.

According to Suresh Nair, Managing Director, NetApp ASEAN, “Data proliferation isn’t going to take a break despite the current economic downturn and neither is NetApp when it comes to helping our customers in the long run. Indeed, our customers have identified management of information as a means to draw the greatest cost savings in the immediate future.”

“The pressure for cost reduction has led to the rapid adoption of storage-efficiency technologies such as thin provisioning, deduplication, RAID-DP®, and Snapshot™, which come standard on NetApp systems,” said Jay Kidd, chief marketing officer of NetApp. “Our customers are consistently realizing unprecedented space savings greater than 70% with these technologies in their virtual infrastructures. We’re so confident about our space-saving features that we are assuring customers they will use at least 50% less storage in their virtual desktop and server environments.”

According to industry estimates, storage utilization rates average 25–40%. This means that the average IT organization does not use more than half the storage they buy. In addition, much of the data stored on disk is redundant. This is especially true in virtual server environments in which the same server operating system and application software are stored repeatedly in each virtual machine. Not only is this a waste of storage, it is a waste of power and floor space—all of which increase IT costs.

NetApp has long specialized in driving inefficiencies out of customers’ data centers. As NetApp’s expertise and feature-set have grown, it has proven to reduce 50% of customers’ storage, even for those on the leading edge of efficiency techniques using traditional storage. As a result, today NetApp is confident that customers will use 50% less storage, although the average customer savings are often greater. By following established best practices implemented by NetApp Professional Services and utilizing storage-efficiency technologies designed into the NetApp Data ONTAP® operating system, customers can save capacity and tap into the unrealized potential of their virtual infrastructure with these standard features:

· Thin Provisioning—Improve storage utilization with NetApp FlexVol® by aggregating unused capacity across storage volumes and share it dynamically across all applications as needs change.

· Deduplication—Quickly and easily eliminate redundant copies of data on primary, archive, and backup data to gain maximum value from current storage investments and better utilize existing storage capacity.

· RAID-DP—Safeguard data from double disk failure with RAID-DP, NetApp’s unique implementation of RAID 6 that provides protection without compromising performance, even for the most demanding applications. RAID-DP provides higher protection and performance levels than RAID 10 without the high-capacity overhead.

· Snapshot—Rapidly recover data from a point-in-time copy and better protect data with no performance impact and minimal consumption of storage space.

LandAmerica Financial Group, Inc. credits its move to NetApp centralized storage for a 70% reduction in overall capacity requirements. The company estimates that 30% savings come from eliminating local disk and taking advantage of thin provisioning, and that another 40% come from NetApp deduplication technology used to eliminate redundant data objects in both primary and backup data sets. To date, LandAmerica has achieved anywhere from 40% to 70% capacity savings by turning on deduplication across a range of data sets. NetApp Snapshot technology, which LandAmerica uses for rapid data backup and recovery, also minimizes storage consumption.

“If we showed you a graph of our disk usage over time, you’d see the incredible shrinking disk that’s a result of deploying NetApp storage," said Jack Kinsey, assistant vice president, Network Systems manager. "In the past, we’ve been in the very uncomfortable position of being maxed out in every vector in our data center—floor space, rack space, power, cooling. But today, utilizing blade servers, VMware®, and NetApp storage with space-reduction technologies, we’re positioned to avoid that predicament again.”

Customers anywhere in the world who purchase a new system for their virtual desktop and server environment can take advantage of this Program. If customers don't use 50% less storage after following best practices, NetApp will provide the additional capacity as needed to meet the shortfall at no additional charge, up to 50% of the original capacity purchased. Qualifying service delivery is available from NetApp Global Services or participating Authorized Professional Service Partners in Networked Storage for Virtualized Platforms.
