Kuala Lumpur, October 8, 2007 – Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad has sent two lucky customers on a trip of a lifetime to witness a groundbreaking moment in Malaysian history - the launch of Malaysia’s first ‘Angkasawan’ Negara to the International Space Station (ISS) in Kazakhstan.

As the main presenter of ‘Program Angkasawan Negara’, Celcom brought two lucky customers, who travelled together with the delegates from MOSTI, to witness the historical launch at Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan on Wednesday, October 10 at 9.21 pm (Malaysian time).

The two lucky customers are Dato’ Dr Ashar bin Abdullah, a Gynecologist at Ampang Hospital and Encik Zamri bin Mohamed, the General Manager of Sri Malaysia Hotel and Committee member of the SuperBike Association of Malaysia.

“I was surprised when I heard the news that I was chosen, but I feel privileged and proud to be one of the Celcom customers to witness the launch of Malaysia’s first ‘angkasawan’ to space,” said En Zamri, on being chosen as one of the lucky customers.

The other chosen customer, Dato’ Dr Ashar said, “I feel like I have won the lottery. I’ve always been interested in space and have even visited the Smithsonian Institute in the U.S. I thank Celcom for making my dream come true.”

Speaking on this special initiative for its customers, En Zalman Aefendy Zainal Abidin, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad, said, “As a gesture of appreciation to our loyal customers, Celcom has taken this opportunity to reward them with this once-in-a-lifetime experience. We are bringing them closer to this historical moment in which only a select few Malaysians are able to witness.”

‘Angkasawan Negara’ is a symbolic programme reflecting the country’s science and technology aspiration in the 21st century and we are proud to come in as the main sponsor of this groundbreaking programme. In addition to inculcating the nation’s interest in science and technology, we are also raising the country’s image internationally,” En Zalman added.

In addition to the sponsorship of the ‘Angkasawan Negara’ programme, Celcom is also planning to introduce Angkasawan-related mobile contents such as live streaming of the mission launch via 3G. This content and many more will be available soon at http://www.channelx.com.my/ or the Channel X WAP portal.

Celcom will also be launching various awareness and educational activities, especially for the youth.

“We hope to play a significant role in developing the country’s Science and Technology industry, and in the long run, inspire our young to become the next generation of ‘angkasawan’,” concluded En Zalman.

Celcom has 6.2 million customers and over 270,000 3G subscribers. It has the widest network of any mobile network operator in the country, covering 97 per cent of the country.
