Imagination flows free with Canon Photo Marathon 2008

More than 1000 capture KL in a unique light for amazing gifts

KUALA LUMPUR, 3rd November 2008 – Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a global leader in photographic and digital imaging solutions, completed its second Photo Marathon by unearthing more fresh talents in the Malaysian photography scene.

The event received participation of more than 1000 eager photographers under the professional and compact camera categories. The race which began at Berjaya Times Square with a short briefing of rules and roadmaps reached its height with the sight of the many participants uploading and picking their best shots amidst a lot of excitement. Scores of images submitted reflected the out-of-the-box imaginations and sometimes skewed views of the participants on KL’s Golden Triangle area. The themes provided were Indulge Metropolitan, Mess in Rules and Goes Green which helped encourage the imagination of the contestants to produce some challenging shots.

Best Theme Shot- Indulge Metropolitan - Digital Compact, Kate Ng; DSLR, King Lee Wong

Best Theme Shot- Mess in Rules - Digital Compact, Donnie Sinongco & Aidilezan Abu Samah; DSLR, Chang Siew Keong

Best Theme Shot- Goes Green - Digital Compact, Low Chee Long; DSLR, Nazir Azhari Mohd Anis

The winner from both categories for best shots captured in each theme received a Canon PowerShot A1000IS as a reward for their creativity.

Overall Marathon Winners

Grand Prize - Digital Compact, Koh Lay Hsiang, DSLR, King Lee Wong.

Second Prize - Digital Compact, Mohd Zaidi Bin Mohd Mashoti; DSLR, Muhammad Zulfadzli Che Mustafa

Third Prize - Digital Compact, Low Chee Long; DSLR, Ang Teck Long.

The overall Photo Marathon 2008 Grand Prize winner for the Compact category won a trip for a Photography Clinic in South New Zealand for one accompanied with a Canon EOS1000D with Efs 18-55mm lens.

As for the professional category, the winner will be getting a trip to South New Zealand for one as well as Canon’s EOS40D with Efs17-85mm lens. Second prize winners for both the compact and professional category received a Canon PowerShot SX100IS and a Canon EOS450D with Efs 18-55mm lens respectively.

Third Prize winners from the compact and professional segment went home with Canon’s IXUS 85IS and Canon’s EOS1000D with Efs 18-55mm lens respectively.

“This year’s marathon garnered far more support than last year and we hope for it to increase steadily throughout the time we organize it. Besides the turnout, it is great to see the different ways people interpret a theme and view the city’s architecture which is evident through the final images,” said Mr. Liew Sip Chon, President & CEO of Canon Marketing (Malaysia) who was also there to present the gifts to the winners.

Renowned names from the photography industry were there to judge the hundred of participation and find the shining stars. The panel of judges included Mr. Kim Teoh, Chief Editor of Photo Creator Magazines, Benny Khoo of Keep Gallery Wedding Studio, freelance professional photographers CH Loh and Kaz Chua, international renowned photographer, Zung of the Photoz and John Ishii of PC.Com. Judging was based on creativity in theme interpretation, use of colors, light/ shadows, composition of photograph, and relevance to the theme given in the marathon.

Mr. Donny Ling, Head of Operations (CII), Assistant Director of Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd summarized the marathon as a venue to encourage young talents.

“We saw a lot of young participants this year and we are glad that we have an avenue to encourage and develop such young talents. The judges had a hard time to make a decision as all the entries were unique in their own way. We are looking forward to create more clinics to assist budding talents like those witnessed today to learn the basic rules of photography.”
