MIMOS TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS CONTINUES TO GAIN MOMENTUM

MIMOS technology platforms transferred to 10 technology recipients from various indigenous industries

KUALA LUMPUR, 5 DECEMBER 2008 – The Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), through its strategic agency MIMOS, yesterday exchanged Memorandum of Agreements with 10 technology recipients from various local industries to develop products based on MIMOS technology platforms for commercialization.

“MIMOS technology platforms developed at our labs continues to gain momentum from the indigenous industries. The transfer of MIMOS technology platforms is a testament to the value-add that they can bring to the technology recipients by enhancing their existing products and services, giving them the competitive edge in the challenging market space,” said Dato’ Abdul Wahab Abdullah, President & Chief Executive Officer, MIMOS.
The 10 recipients of MIMOS Technology Platforms are:
1. Alam Teknokrat Sdn Bhd (Skali) was awarded Semantic Technology Platform v1
2. Biforst Technology Sdn Bhd was awarded Semantic Technology Platform v1
3. Bill Adam Associates Sdn Bhd was awarded Semantic Personaliser Gear v1.0
4. MutiaraCom Sdn Bhd was awarded Knowledge Exchange for precision agriculture;
5. InfoValley Life Sciences Sdn Bhd was awarded Semantic Ontology Visualisation Browser
6. In-Fusion Solutions Sdn Bhd was awarded Semantic Advisory and Diagnosis System
7. Jaring Communications Sdn Bhd was awarded version 2 of Grid Computing
8. CEEDTec Sdn Bhd was awarded WiWi Generation 1.5
9. MIMOS Smart Computing Sdn Bhd was awarded Jen-ii, iDola and WiWi Generation 1.5
10. PERNEC Integrated Network Systems Sdn Bhd was awarded WiWi Generation 1.5

At the handover ceremony, held in conjunction with MIMOS Technology Preview 2008, the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation was represented by its Deputy Secretary General - Science Services, Datin Paduka Dr. Khatijah Mohd Yusoff. Also present was MIMOS’ newly appointed Chairperson, Dato’ Suriah Abdul Rahman and Dato’ Wahab.
Through MOSTI’s technology licensing programme, MIMOS is helping to bolster the growth of globally competitive local companies and indigenous industries through its research and development in frontier technologies. MIMOS’ focus is on strategic market-driven product development and advanced technology which essentially involves the development of technology platforms for commercialization by indigenous industries.
MIMOS also signed and exchanged Memorandum of Understandings with 13 local industries to gain domain for training and exposure to MIMOS’ technology platforms aimed at exploring possibilities of developing products for commercialisation.

The 13 potential technology recipients and technology platforms being explored are:

3. CD Solutions Sdn Bhd – MEMS Sensor and Grid Computing
4. Ofisgate Sdn Bhd – MIMOS Centres of Excellence
5. Innovision Business Solutions (M) Sdn Bhd – MSCAN Platform for Greenhouse Farming & Aquaculture Applications
6. Disability Solutions (M) Sdn Bhd – FASIH-Malay Text-to-Speech Engine
7. Phytofolia Sdn Bhd – MEMS Sensor for Precision Agriculture
8. Astronautic Technology (M) Sdn Bhd – Precision Agriculture
9. Select-TV Solutions Sdn Bhd – Advanced Informatics
10. Secure Technology Innovations Sdn Bhd – Information Security
11. Ceope Consulting Sdn Bhd – Semantic Technology Platform
12. Controller Area Network Solutions (M) Sdn Bhd – Controller Area Network System
13. Cubic Electronics Sdn Bhd – Advanced Informatics
“The primary goal of the technology transfer process is to encourage broad use of MIMOS-developed technology platforms among indigenous industries and enable the integration of MIMOS technology platforms into existing product lines and/or further developing the technology verticals to create new products,” said Dato’ Wahab.

MIMOS Partners Recognition AwardsMIMOS has been growing its network of dedicated partners comprising universities, research institutions and multinational companies (MNCs), both local and foreign, in its efforts to become the global trusted and preferred partner of choice in frontier technologies.

MIMOS' university partners are essentially its virtual researchers focusing on basic research in their respective technological areas of excellence to complement MIMOS' applied research in frontier technologies. Collaboration with universities provides MIMOS the opportunity to pool strengths and tap into a wealth of expertise to transform the basic technology seeds into technology shelves and platforms that are industry and market-driven for commercialisation.
To date MIMOS has collaborations with18 local and 22 foreign universities and research institutions; nine local and eight foreign MNCs; and five Centres of Excellence (CoEs) with universities and four CoEs with industry.

Today, MIMOS honoured all partners for their invaluable contribution at the “Fusion of Innovators” Dinner, where partners received Recognition Awards for their contribution.
“The Fusion of Innovators Dinner celebrates the contributions and achievements of our partners. We are indeed honoured to have these world-class organizations collaborating and partnering with MIMOS,” said Dato’ Wahab.

The Recognition Awards for the establishment of Centres of Excellence with Universities were given to:
• MIMOS-International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Centre of Excellence in Cyberspace Security Lab;
• MIMOS-Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Centre of Excellence in Semantic Agents;
• MIMOS-Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Centre of Excellence in Semantic Technology & Augmented Reality;
• MIMOS-Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Centre of Excellence in Micro-Nano Sensor Technology; and
• MIMOS-University Tuanku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Centre of Excellence in Pattern Recognition and Machine Vision.
The Recognition Awards for the establishment of Centres of Excellence with Industry were given to:
• MIMOS-CISCO Asian Centre of Excellence in Networking Technologies (ACENT);
• MIMOS-AGILENT Centre of Excellence in Test and Measurement Technologies (CEMTA);
• MIMOS- Silicon Graphic International (SGI) Centre of Excellence in High Performance Computing; and
• MIMOS-Microsoft Innovation Centre.

MIMOS also recognized its Innovation Eco-System for Industry Development partners, by honouring them with the Innovation Eco-System Partners Recognition Awards. The awards were given to:

Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry, Malaysia (PIKOM);
Malaysia Venture Capital Management Bhd (MAVCAP);
Multimedia Development Corporation (MCeC) and
CRADLE Investment Programme (CIP).

The Innovation Eco-System for Industry Development partnership is aimed at mitigating the technology risks, funding risks and market risks by providing the necessary connectivity from technology perspectives, funding assistances and market access. Under the partnership, MIMOS facilitates technology acquisition and adaptation; CIP provides funding for promising ideas as well as provide mentoring and commercialization support; MDeC assists with technopreneur development and market access while MAVCAP injects commercial venture funding.
