More than 1,500 photographers participated at the event Cheque presentation of RM25,960 to the National Breast Cancer Research Foundation
The early morning of 15thOctober saw a large crowd of photographers congregating excitedly at the Bukit Bintang entrance of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur for the Canon Photomarathon Malaysia 2011.
After a briefing by Chong Lip Wei, Senior Marketing Manager of Imaging Communications Products Division (ICP), Canon Marketing Malaysia, the crowd also witnessed the handover cheque ceremony of RM25,960 by Melvyn Ho, President & CEO and Simon Wong, Director of ICP Division of Canon Marketing Malaysia to Puan Sri Datin Seri Dato’ Akmal Abdul Salam Patron of the National Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

“In conjunction with the breast cancer awareness month of October, this year Canon Marketing Malaysia made the decision to charge a small participation fee as a way to support the efforts of the National Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This is one of the ways of living out our corporate philosophy of kyosei, living and working together for the common good. As an organization, we are not only about driving profits but we want to make an impact in our community,” said Ho.
As the first theme, out of three was announced, the Photomarathon flagged off to a great start!
There were three themes for the day which was kept tight under lock and key till the specific moment of the announcement on the very day of the event, adding to the challenge of capturing the ‘masterpiece’ for each theme. The three themes were The Earth Guardian, City of Colours, Extraordinary of the ordinary.
Each participant came vying for the grand prize which is an all expense-paid photo trip to Tasmania, an unforgettable 8-day photo clinic hosted by acclaimed photographer Triston Yeo as well as other prizes including Canon printers and also professional camera bags from renowned brand ThinkTank Photo. Besides being in the run for the prizes, each photograph submitted will stand a chance of being showcased at the “Canon Signature Gallery” photo exhibition at the concourse area of Pavilion KL from the 19th to the 23rd October! Throughout the day, the teams of photographers came back for the unveiling of the other two themes and went out again in search of that perfect shot. The day ended at about 8.00pm with the submission of the photographs to the Canon team and the panel of judges.
The panel of judges included Zainal Abdul Halim who is one of Reuter's photojournalists, Peter Tan who was awarded and certified as a Master Photographer by the prestigious Master Photographers Association (UK), Din Arshad with 30 years of experience in the photography industry, Harry Woo, recognized locally and internationally with a list of awards under his belt, Ng Kok Leong who is currently the Photo Editor of The Star Publications, Raj Kumar, Photo Editor of the Sun Media Publication Group and Syed Agil Syed Jaafar, ex-Chief Photographer of the Utusan Group. All the esteemed judges are photographers themselves with years of professional experience in the photography industry.
In addition, this year’s participants were given a choice to print out their photos with the Canon PIXMA printers at the printing station, set up with the purpose of raising funds for charity. Each photo was charged RM10 per A4 printout and came with a photo frame. All proceeds will go towards the National Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
October 22nd will be the date to look out for because the results of the winners will be announced at Pavilion KL, Center Court at 11.00am.
Meanwhile, do drop by the “Canon Snap a PIXMA Star” booth on the 14th – 16th of October at the Estee Lauder road show in Pavilion KL and get your photo printouts for free as the Consumer System Products Division of Canon Marketing Malaysia will be sponsoring a total of 2,000 4R printouts as well. What’s more, one of the judges, Zainal Abdul Halim will be personally joining the fun and spearheading a team of 20 photographers to take part in the photomarathon. All photographs taken will be exhibited and sold at the Canon Signature Gallery. Proceeds from these photographs will be channeled to National Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
So, don’t forget to visit our first ever “Canon Signature Gallery” photo exhibition from 19th to the 23rd of October where you will get to see top photography works by four of our judges including Zainal Abdul Halim, Peter Tan, Harry Woo & Ng Kok Leong. In addition, along with the winning shots of past years’ Canon Photomarathon Malaysia, you will see a compilation of the top 10 or top 5 photographs from this year’s Best of Show & Best Of Theme photographs respectively.
