Continuous growth of subscriber base reflects the increased adoption of broadband in the country
Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s (TM) broadband family just got bigger, with its subscriber base hitting the 2,000,000 mark! This is yet another significant milestone for the country’s Broadband Champion and leading New Generation Communications Provider after only two (2) months earlier achieving 300,000 subscribers for its UniFi service.
To date, TM has more than 1.64 million customers for its Broadband for General Population (BBGP), under the brand name Streamyx while its High Speed Broadband (HSBB) service, UniFi has recorded more than 359,000 subscribers.Commenting on the achievement, Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM said, “As Malaysia’s No. 1 Broadband provider, reaching this milestone, is indeed a rewarding experience for TM. The response to TM’s broadband services has been very positive for all these years and it has been boosted with the roll out of our high speed broadband, UniFi service which offers download speeds of up to 20Mbps.”
“Adding another leaf to its book this year is even more meaningful for TM; 2012 does not only mark the second year celebration of UniFi, but achieving this milestone on the silver jubilee or 25th anniversary of TM’s corporatization makes it even more memorable for us. The Group has charted through many business cycles in these 25 years, including two industry inflection points from analogue to digital, and again from legacy digital to IP, as well as a demerger, showing resilience and emerging stronger from each cycle. To add to that, coincidentally, the 2 million mark was passed in conjunction with the World Telecommunications Day which is celebrated on 17 May 2012. This year is indeed a celebration of sorts for TM, and we are extremely grateful. We are very happy with this achievement and it would not be possible for TM to be where we are today without the support of our various stakeholders. It is therefore befitting that I thank all our shareholders, valued customers, business partners, the Government for their unwavering support and trust in us, as well as the Board of Directors and staff for their contribution and commitment. Thank you for the silver journey and for entrusting us to deliver an enhanced and integrated digital lifestyle to their homes," Dato Sri Zamzamzairani added.
“This achievement will also pave the way to meeting the target of 75% broadband penetration rate under the National Broadband agenda. TM has been in the pivotal role of fulfilling this agenda as the Company is currently contributing more than 40% of the national broadband penetration. TM will continue to play our role in driving the broadband adoption in Malaysia towards producing an IT savvy generation which will then elevate us into becoming a high-income nation,” Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani enthused.
Currently, there are 28.7 million broadband customers in Malaysia including the mobile broadband subscribers while the broadband penetration rate stands at 62.3% (source: Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission).
“We are committed towards the next phase of our transformation and are currently focused on our journey to be a New Generation Telco and an Information Exchange. We will continue to work hard towards extending our market leadership, innovate for the future, improve our operational efficiency and returning appreciable value to all our shareholders. Customers will also be our priority and in fact, we have declared 2012 as the Year of Customer Experience for TM. We have been focusing on the entire customer experience and pursuing quality improvement programmes in our effort to deliver an enhanced customer experience,” concluded Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani.
UniFi is currently available at 81 exchange areas covering more than 1.222 million premises. The areas include 64 areas in Klang Valley, 3 in Penang, 2 in Kedah, 9 in Johor, 1 in Melaka, 1 in Negeri Sembilan, and 1 in Perak.
TM’s UniFi is currently being offered via three (3) residential packages. The residential triple-play packages are VIP5 at RM149 a month, VIP10 at RM199 a month, and VIP20 at RM249 a month, while the UniFi business packages on offer are BIZ5 at RM199 a month, BIZ10 at RM599 a month and BIZ20 at RM899 a month.
