Data centre certification is supported by MDeC to enhance Malaysia’s positioning as a world class data centre hub which is a key initiative under the Government’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP)

Kuala Lumpur, 17 October 2012. Malaysia's leading integrated communications service provider, Maxis Berhad (Maxis) is pleased to announce that the facility which houses its comprehensive data centre and cloud computing services has been awarded Uptime Institute’s Tier III Certification (Certification of Design). The facility, built by HDC, Malaysia’s leading data centre infrastructure service provider, in collaboration with Maxis, is the first and only in Malaysia to be accredited with such a certification. The prestigious certification has been awarded for the data centre’s consistency in its procedures for operations, maintenance and support of the critical infrastructure systems which are key to ensuring continuous availability.

The Uptime Institute, USA is a global organisation head quartered in New York providing unbiased, third-party data centre research, education and consultation focused on improving data centre performance and efficiency.

The certification is supported by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) under the Entry Point Project 3 (EPP3): Malaysia as a World Class Data Centre Hub, and part of the Business Services National Key Economic Area, which is under the Government’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).

Fitri Abdullah, Head of Maxis Business Services said, “Maxis is proud that the facility which houses our data centre and cloud computing services is the first Tier III certified data centre facility in Malaysia. It reinforces Maxis’ commitment in providing world class services to our business customers in terms of end-to-end solutions for connectivity, managed services, cloud computing and data centre services which is in line with the Governments plan as part of the Entry Point Project 3 (EPP3) to establish Malaysia as a World Class Data Centre Hub.”

The EPP3 aims to establish Malaysia as the preferred destination for data centre investors and increase the supply of data centre space1. The development of these centres is seen as a vital economic growth driver and with this EPP, MDeC hopes to add RM2 billion to the Gross National Income (GNI) through the data centre segment alone by 20202. As Malaysia’s leading integrated communication service provider, Maxis not only contributes to this national imperative but also aids in transforming Malaysian businesses by giving them the competitive edge in local as well as global markets.

“We are very pleased with this development. The Uptime Institute’s Tier III Certification (Certification of Design) will certainly drive the confidence of market leaders such as Maxis to provide world-class data centre and hosting services. As the lead agency tasked to drive the programmes identified under the Entry Point Project 3 (EPP3), MDeC will continue its focus on building the 3 ‘Cs’ of local data centre facilities; Capability, Capacity and Credibility which encompasses international certification not only for the DC building but also for the workforce within the DC industry. With such measures in place, we are confident that our data centres will be able to better market their services to more regional and international enterprises,” said Ng Wan Peng, COO, Multimedia Development Corporation.

Meanwhile, Chuah Tai Eu, Executive Director of HDC, said, “HDC’s design and built data centre roadmap of adopting Uptime Institute’s Tier III Design Certification is the first step in fulfilling our company’s vision of delivering non-compromise and high performance data centre infrastructure to meet data centre hosting demands across industries. We are proud to be working with Maxis in supporting their data centre services, and believe that this partnership will help spur the growth of the local data centre industry.”

In conjunction with this milestone achievement, a special briefing was conducted for members of the media to the Data Centre in i-City, Shah Alam, during which they were given a special tour of Maxis’ data centre, which hosts services such as enhanced co-location services, disaster recovery and Cloud Computing solutions, Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). Maxis also provides the connectivity businesses need to access their data, via Maxis’ metro-E, Business Fibre Internet or Dedicated Internet Access.
