Maxis’ networks, the fastest in Malaysia, become even faster!
Maxis to invest RM half billion for 4G LTE

Kuala Lumpur, 11 December 2012. Maxis Berhad (“Maxis”), Malaysia’s leading integrated communications service provider, is all set to launch 4G LTE service following the allocation of the 2600 MHz spectrum band for 4G LTE by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on 5 December 2012.

Welcoming the formalised allocation of 2600 MHz 4G LTE spectrum, Sandip Das, Chief Executive Officer, Maxis said, “We are grateful for the final approval by MCMC of 4G LTE spectrum. The grant of 4G LTE spectrum by MCMC is an important milestone in our country’s telecom journey, heralding the introduction of super high speed data networks using LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology. The real 4G services! Maxis was the first telco in Malaysia to complete extensive LTE field trials. We have been trialling 4G LTE for 2 years and conducting extensive LTE interworking tests in a live network environment using commercial devices to ensure that customers can enjoy seamless broadband experience wherever they are located. Now we are all set to launch 4G LTE services in Malaysia and look forward to rolling out these networks across various parts of the country in the next few years. Already, we are the first to connect customers with 4G LTE service in friendly user trials now running with selected customers. You will see Maxis' networks, the fastest in Malaysia, become even faster!”

Sandip added, “We also believe that network sharing is key to the deployment of networks faster across the country while optimising industry investments and avoiding duplication. Therefore in July 2012, we signed an important agreement with Redtone to build common infrastructure following our sign up with U-Mobile. Between us we have a strong suite of LTE spectrum which will give us the spread and opportunity to give our customers the best 4G LTE experience in Malaysia.”

Maxis’ 4G LTE service will offer download speeds 10 times faster than 3G and work seamlessly with its existing 3G networks. The Company’s 3G / HSPA+ network is already providing speeds of up to 21 Mbps and 81% population coverage from 5,200 sites. Whereas its HSPA+ dual carrier network has over 3,500 sites covering most major towns nationwide and supports speeds of up to 42 Mbps. This means customers can continue to enjoy their 4G LTE devices even when they are outside the 4G LTE area.

As part of its ongoing network investments, Maxis has allocated RM half a billion over the next three years to activate 4G LTE services.
